Needle scalers are good at making a fresh fabricated part look like an older cast piece, too. Love 'em !!
Used these welding at the rail yard 15 years ago. Completely forgot about em. Gonna use it to knock rust off a 68 mustang frame
I never knew this tool existed, it's like God made this to ease my pain removing rust on my Yeep. This is the restoration version of a belt fed weapon. Beautiful.
Would never have thought the needle scaler would work for built up grease, was just struggling with this on an old transmission. Going to give this a try
I have spent many many hours running a needle scaler and yes they are handy and do a great job. This is a great demonstration. My only advice from personal experience is wear the best gloves you have that absorb the impact and vibration from a needle scaler going into your hands, wrists, and arms. I did not protect my hands when I was younger. Now I have carpal tunnel and reynauds disease in both hands so please be safe with all tools that put impact and vibration into the hands. Thank you
Useul comment. Fixed my years long issues reynauds with cold water exposure and cold showers - got my central hetaing system working again maybe that will work for you

Invaluable tool. I've had the exact same needle adapter I've used for years with my old Rodac air chisel and it's a beast. Got it from Harbor Freight back in the days long before the internet. Haven't even had to replace a needle ever even! Still, for the trans case I would've just used my pressure washer. Much faster and more thorough without leaving all those tiny needle marks. BTW, those needles, if you do manage to break one, they are super hard carbon steel and you can make 1,001 different types of tools with them, awls, pokers, tiny screwdrivers, etc.
Just flashed back to waking up in my rack in the navy to someone using this on the deck directly above me. So loud your soul will leave your body.
I am using one currently on my concrete truck to remove concrete buildup. Truck gets repainted next week.😊
Like you said Matt, I had forgotten about this tool until I needed to remove the rust from the frame and everything else on the rear of my pickup. I got one from Ebay, about $40, it worked great and doesn't require an industrial air compressor like some would lead you to believe.

What compressor did you use with it? I only have a 25L at home don’t think it’ll be enough
@@seankelly716 You need a compressor that produces at least 5 SCFM at 90 PSI for most air tools. For small jobs you could get by with less for sure.
Reminds me of my navy days... busted up non-skid and rusty steel on cvn-74 and cg-54 for many many hours.
Kool Matt. I've seen them in the Eastwood catalog. But I only ever associated them with arc/stick welding. Perfect for my upcoming job on the 69 C10 front frame with all the rust, dried mud and grease.

@ibid_2win Sandblasting is not really a DIY thing.
With a sand blaster you have to fight the sand that gets in all the cracks and crevices
man I'd put on a respirator for that stuff! that stuff will kill you. but never thought bout using a needle scaler, great vid.
Great video. Man, you have got to wear a proper respirator for these types of jobs. Breathing that stuff will kill you in the end. Cheers and stay safe!
Nice video. I would add a face mask or respirator. I use a respirator because after a while using it I can feel it in my lungs. I also wear some sort of eye protection especially if you have contacts.
If only we could get Eastwood to open up stores in Australia Matt. Eastwood sells a lot of killer gear that we just can’t get here unless you pay crazy prices from some exclusive trade only retailer.
Matt, great video. I need to take care of a converted pickup truck to trailer I've had sitting in the yard for years. I might go this route... What size compressor tank do you need? I've got I think one of those 3 - 5 gallon compressor/tank. Thoughts?

I used mine, from Ebay at $40, between 60 and 90 PSI with a compressor like most use in their home garage, and it worked great.
Only a 4 CFM required tool. One of the lowest air volume requirements I’ve seen for a scaler

How long do those needles last? And can you replace them or do you have to buy a new tool?
I'm getting flashbacks from when I was Seaman in the USCG. Now I use my needle gun for hobby purposes only.
I have to say first what are you doing in my garage that you knew that my air tools are in the bottom drawer. -) the other thing is that at least 30 years ago I picked up one of these from Sears. It just did not seem to work as well as the one you are using. I think if the rain stops today I'm going to run up to Eastwood and pick another one up and give it a try. I'm very lucky less than 2 miles from my front door we have Eastwood store so in most cases I don't need to order from them I can go straight to the store and if they don't have it they will get it for me within a couple days.
Once I have it I'm going to do a challenge to see if they both work the same or is one better than the other. Either way once I buy a tool it doesn't go back to the store unless it's broke.

Once the majority of the heavy scale rust is removed, electrolysis will completely remove any remaining rust.
Molasses & water in a kiddy pool works wonders too.
Yes sir it does work great. You can soak cast engine blocks in a molasses and water solution with a bubbler or agitator in a drum. When its all dirty and nasty just use it to kill weeds in the driveway or keep the mosquitoes down.
Mollases cleans off rust but NOT grease. I used to use it but it works too well and pits the metal big time. So pressure wash and sand blast it the best though this descaler should do a great job as well.
The descalers are great for cleaning up stick welds and splatter. And to a degree also stress relieves them as well. Better than a wire brush wheel
@@ldnwholesale8552 yep I hear you about acidity and pitting or really weakening metal. Kinda like the kool-aid soak for brass or copper it works yet too long of a soak it causes harm.
Getting ready to get up under my car with this tool and try to stop the rust. I’m about to lose two body mounts in the rear. Damn Ford. lol

Electrolysis is easy and simple to set up in a tub with a battery charger or computer power supply. Will even convert some of the rust back into metal.
Clean the heavy scale off with a needle scaler or whatever you choose. Dip in 40% to 60% phosphoric acid based etch solution or brush solution onto the metal. I have used the green color store brand phosphoric acid concrete etch for the rust issues for 30 years my father has been doing the same for over 50 years and have no problems with rust. Just make sure that if you decide to use this method for prep make sure that you follow the steps and be safe. I do not have problems with flash rust using phosphoric acid solution. An electrolysis tank talk to a person who plates metal or find a old book on how metal was plated. You can generate gasses with an electrolysis tank, dispose of the liquid, and and from my own experimentation they can eat up your metal or even weaken metal. I would rather have a Oakite tank aka Hot tank vs the electrolysis myself. I have used battery chargers and even 30 to 60 amp DC power using a 55 gallon drum was a fun outdoor electrolysis tank experiment. Have fun and stay safe.

If you have a home air compressor, that won't work with the compressor I have. It puts out 90% @4cfm. That is what it calls for and it will not run the tool. Ronnie.

Do not ever point the needles toward you. Those needled do occasionally fly out like a projectile.

Nope..I prefer grinder with wire brush on ..
A wire brush on a drill isn't going to get in the crevices like this tool will. A wire wheel on a drill or freehand doesn't work well on old grease, it gets all caked up on the bristles. Wire wheels are better for flat, mildy rusted surfaces. This needle scaler tool is definitely more effective in this application.
Shocked that he didn’t wear a mask, better yet, a respirator.
