    RECOMMENDED VIOLINS:
Fiddlerman violins are the only violins I currently recommend. You can choose the violin to suite you depending on your budget. Remember the cheaper you go (buying rubbish from Amazon for example), the worse the violin will be (garbage most likely) and the HARDER it will be to learn - which is why Fiddlerman violins are an excellent beginners choice:

HOW TO PLACE DOT/STICKERS ON YOUR VIOLIN:
    - • DIY Dot Violin Finger ...
    HAVING TROUBLE TUNING YOUR VIOLIN?
This might help: • 5 ways to stop violin ... bubt if they are slipping a lot and you are having trouble tuning the violin, then you should get something better set up (see above).

I’ve always wanted to play the violin as a child but we couldn’t afford it, now I’m 29 and I’m finally learning. My coworkers the other days asked what’s the point? I told them the point of life is learning so why not? And why do they need to be assholes, when they could obviously tell I’m excited about it. Moral of the story don’t be joy stealers like my coworker, and it’s never too late to learn.

So wonderful to see so many 'mature' people taking on the challenge - very inspiring. I am 60 and have no musical experience whatsoever. Started violin 4 weeks ago - love it. Sound dreadful at the moment but I don't care. Patience and persistence will get me there. Thanks Alison.

I'm close to 70 and have been playing the ukulele for 5 years. My first instrument. A friend recently gave me a hand me down violin and I'm really enjoying learning. I have never even touched one before, but have always loved the sound. Just being able to make a decent sound is exciting.

So far watched 4 videos, this one included! And Allison is by far one of the best tutor's I´ve found. She's clear, she's very pedagogic -doesn't hurry or sound "excited" but full of positive energy- and she takes the necessary time to explain the minor details and the key ones too!! ITHANKS A BUNCH!!

The violin is NOT difficult to learn. It is demanding and challenging and because of this being able to make music with a violin is EXTREMELY rewarding.

I started learning the violin at the age of 27 and had an amazing tutor I took my grade 1 exam and passed. Work then took over so stopped learning and playing (I was probably about grade 3). I watched Alison's original videos a few years ago and enjoyed them. I'm now 48 and these new youtube videos have inspired me to pick up the fiddle again and even though I'm back at square one I'm enjoying every minute. Thank you.

I've wanted a violin for the longest time, and I finally got one!
Now I can learn, and this is part rather easy for me to do. I guess it's because as a kid I'd act like I'm playing a violin, and I'd observe others who play them.
Now the more difficult part is going to be actually playing the violin, can't wait to learn!!

I've played the violin intermittently since I was 12 but I had to stop practicing too often because of hectic schedule at med school. I'm 22 now and still got 2 years to graduate. I've tried joining a local orchestra so I'll be forced to practice but that proved to be a lot of commitment. Only yesterday I discovered your channel and books and I'm practicing again thanks to you. I was shocked to see that my tutors missed to teach me some interesting trivia about the violin which you mentioned in the couple first lessons. I have to admit that I hated the violin at first because of my tutors and didn't learn that I actually love playing it until I quit lessons and started learning on my own.

Wow. Just found these video tutorials! Thank you for these! I'm recently suffering from depression (and surprise, none of my friends definitely know about it), and so I was looking for something that may help me overcome this trial and I've decided to finally learn playing a violin. I've always been a fan of violin music and now it's finally the time to actually learn doing it and in the sideline improve what I feel about myself so thank you very much. Your tutorials will be of great help 😁

I played the violin for 9 years then I stopped when I was 13. I'm 16 now and I bought a violin because I wanted to get back into it, I was really rusty at playing but I've gotten better, and now I realize in the 9 years of playing I was never taught too many techniques, like vibrato and 2, 3d and 4th position and so on. So I'm watching this series to hopefully learn those things. So far I'm just watching these early videos cause I know all of this, but I'm still watching them just to make sure I don't miss anything. Thanks

Hello Alison, i love your explanation ... they are really granular.... i am loving it... i play guitar, piano, drums and a composer... so i really know how well you are nailing it for beginners...
I have covered only till 4th part of this series... do you have a video on Tuning the violin ... the pegs are not staying on a note properly.. i tune it to E and it drops its tuning no matter how tight i set it to.. even i ended up breaking the string...

Are you playing the strings on the side of your bow, or with the bow flat? It looks like you're playing from the side of the bow hairs. I'm 67 and just started playing. I love the violin, and I'm glad I found you to teach me. You are such a great instructor. Thank you!

I don't understand why you say you are a cheater (that's what I hear, I turned subtitles on and that's what youtube hears too!) 🤣. Aaaanyway, I've watched some of your videos with my daughter that is learning to play violin and she really liked them. Now I got interested in learning and I'm going to use your lessons, thanks!

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor I hope you understood the joke was about how you pronounce the word "Teacher". I swear I hear "cheater", and If I turn on youtube's automated subtitles it does say cheater! so youtube's voice recognition also hears that.

    I've just ordered a Cecelio to get started...late start... I'm 72 :-)
Alison, I've looked at many of your videos and have a bowing question... maybe I missed it elsewhere, but this is a bowing lesson so I thought that I'd ask it here.
Does the hair run flat on the strings, or is it at an angle?
    Don

Play flat for now as you will get thr best tone. I play tilted, but i have been playing for over 30 years and i can manipulate the bow. If you try to tilt as a beginner, you will find the bow going all over the place.

Thank you so much for the lessons! I really appreciate the opportunity to learn from them!
I've been learning to play the violin for a few weeks now, and by now I can bow with very little scratch, and mostly I understand what I'm doing wrong when I hear a scratch.
However, sometimes I feel like my right arm begins to bow with a bit more weight (probably if I relax it too much, or simply getting tired), and when that happens, a nasty scratch appears and also the pitch of the played string goes down quite a bit... And so I figured you haven't really mentioned how much weight should we bow with, in other words, how strongly should we bow?
Could you please comment whether you think it is normal (that bowing with too much weight sounds so badly) or is it rather a sign of a poor quality violin?
Thank you so much once again!!!

Very difficult to answer as I would need to see whats happening. By the sounds of it, you are just getting fatigued and then pressing too hard. Practise in short bursts as that might help. You will always know if you are pressing too hard as it will feel wrong and you will get no sound/tone/pitch, but only proper scratch.

    • @egopak
      @egopak 6 років тому +1

I think so too. In any case, if I stop pressing too hard and just bow as I normally would, then the sound gets back to normal :)
      Thank you for your response!
And thank you for everything you do! :)

I'm very happy with the violin and I decided to continue learning. The instrument is very rewarding to learn with respect to how difficult it is. This is my first week and I planned to purchase a better violin at a music store. 😊 😊
I try so hard to keep the bow straight right now. Sometimes it goes all over the place but I know with practice I will get there. I also need to master the violin hold. Hehe. And I still need to find those elevator floors. But I'll get there.
I have a problem though Alison, whenever I bow, the bow is actually shaking especially when I'm bowing near the tip. Shaking in a sense that the bow is vibrating and the stick hits the hair occasionally. I was wondering, how do i keep the bow steady and straight? As well as is the vibrating normal or something else I need to do? Thanks so much!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  5 років тому +1

Bow shaking usually goes away after a few weeks as your consistency when bowing improves.

    - play the bow in between of the bridge and finger board (more to the fingerboard but not on it)
    - bow straight
    - keep violin straight
-isolate strings when playing PRACTICE IT
