I remember watching the tennis with my pop from a very young age and I still love it to this day. I loved the players who weren't afraid to give a bit of stick to the umpires.
If you watch that second point Mac hits an ace Lendl walks towards the deuce court and then the call comes ,the ref was completely wrong making him replay the point….
@@tonynewton2845 Crybaby? Nope. He was just competitive, and rightfully demanded fairness and accuracy from the officials. Throughout his career, video evidence shows that he was correct in almost every single instance where there was an outburst or a contested call. If you fault him for not simply accepting bad calls that went against him....that's on you.
@@secondstring That sort of behavior is only acceptable in professional wrestling or reality TV. McEnroe was gaming the system. He thought he knew how many infringements he could make before he got disqualified. He came unstuck in the 1990 Australian open because he didn't know that the number had been reduced from four to three. The expression on his face was priceless when he realized his behavior had cost him the match. Did he throw these tantrums when a bad call went in his favor? In any sport the call is what the referee, umpire or judge says it is. In Australian cricket the umpire has recourse to a video replay which is displayed on a big screen. The best McEnroe ever did in the Australian Open was to reach the quarter finals. There have been some American greats, McEnroe isn't one of them. True champions don't behave like him. He should have left his ego in the change rooms when he walked out onto the court. The sport is better off without him.
@@tonynewton2845 By the way...to comment on one of your other bullshit claims: "There have been some American greats, McEnroe isn't one of them." The only American tennis player who has spent more weeks as the world #1 than McEnroe is Sampras. So you're dead wrong about that too....clown. I think a guy who has spent 167 weeks (over three years) as the #1 tennis player in the world, has 16 grand slam titles, over $12M in career prize winnings, is widely regarded as one of the best commentators in the sport to ever hold a microphone, and has a net worth of over $100M has proven himself to be "acceptable". No matter what YOU think.
The problem with this period was that it relied solely on the human eye. Why didn't they install high-precision video cameras on the ceiling to record and play back the recorded images in case of suspicious decisions? That's why we have this problem. If McEnroe had disagreed with the decision, he would have had to laugh and apologise when shown the video evidence. McEnroe would have been called a disgrace by the crowd.
John McEnroe's defense for getting tossed from the Aussie Open is that he was unaware that he was only allowed to threaten the line judge three times, not four times, as fine an example of bullying cowardice that the sport has ever seen. We all thought he was going to attack the line judge with his racket. If John McEnroe mouthed off to me, he would regret it, and quickly. Shut up and serve, John.
You know, Johnny Mac was roasted for his outbursts. But when you look at the temper tantrums that divas like Serena Williams thrown on the court, this is pretty damn mild. (Of course, McEnroe wasn't subject to 'Roid Rage, either.)
To me it's not one of the most famous outbursts. There was an episode in Wimbledon where he just dismissed a linesman with the words; "Baldie, baldie, balkdie". Thing is McEnroe should be stripped of all his titles because he was a drug cheat. Even his ex-wife said it in her biography; he was on steroids and suffered from 'roid rage.
Everyone had a bad call now and then sometimes several in a game. The good players played through and won without crying. McEnroe felt so privileged he need to have crybaby tantrums. Boo hoo.
So tell me...what do you think of Serena Williams' temper tantrums? How about when Wozniacki throws her racket a minimum of 3 times a match? How about when Hercog breaks rackets like Pete Townshend used to smash his guitar? What about when Djokovic throw his tantrums? What McEnroe did was pretty mild compared to the hissy fits of today's divas.
Thanks for upload. Fans must have liked McEnroe arguing with the ump. Ratings were up 74% when he was playing
