@@andreinekrasov2036 Shut up. If you don't assert yourself, people will walk all over you. Things need to be disputed sometimes. Not everybody is a submissive pushover like you.
Yup, McEnroe is totally right on this and the supervisor should have overturned the chair umpire's decision. There was no need for McEnroe to be in the ready position if the other player has a very slow, predictable rhythm.
Remember Johnny Mac always played the long game with chair umps. Challenge them in the smaller venues so he had leverage in the big ones. The announcers mentioning Ings and the US Open is a classic example. 80's tennis put a large amount of pressure on chair umpires to get their work up to snuff and rightfully so. Up until the 80's most chair umpires never really took the time to improve themselves. With Connors, McEnroe, Wilander, and a few others putting on the pressure, they did. Now the pressure has flipped back to the players by giving them a chance to overrule via the computer.
The major change regarding tennis officiating came in 1978 when Dick Roberson was hired to train professional chair umpires. The "pressure" from the players was in the form of on-court tantrums (often justified) which resulted in lower attendance and the loss of tournament sponsors.

He is a mixture of intelligence, a lack of self control, fire, talent, immaturity, insight, and a million other conflicting things.
McEnroe was absolutely right on this one - Becker always took a long time to go into his service motion, and just because he wasn't into a ready/crouch position doesn't mean he wasn't ready to receive, and I think Becker incited this by looking behind him as if McEnroe was delaying due to something going on behind him. Even Becker tries to tell the supervisor that he takes a long time to go into his service motion.
but, if mcenroe had crouched for EVERY other serve in the match, don't you think it natural that Becker would think John's not ready if he's now not crouching for the first time in X amount of serves?

A legend of a player and a suberb tennis commentator - with a violent temper that did real damage to those around him - he admits it himself. ✌️
Mcenroe was absolutely on the line ready to return, just relaxed until the server goes into his motion. Umpire didn't have the balls to call a code of conduct violation seconds before, then his ego kicked in so he made up a violation.
Exactly. Ings clearly regretted not giving McEnroe a warning for verbal abuse, so he used the delay as an excuse to give him one. Becker really controlled the pace there and played the umpire AND McEnroe. I don't see people criticizing Becker for that, but they should.
Mac would make a good lawyer. Mac is only exposing the weaknesses (gray areas) in the rules of the game of tennis. Instead of learning to improve the rules with the help of Mac, they go against Mac and any change to the rules like a bible. This happens everywhere, not just on the tennis court.
McEnroe was always 1000% right when he made outbursts. That's why he considered these incidents such injustices: because not only did he know he was right, he was so obviously and clearly right everyone in the entire venue knew it too. There were plenty of calls against him, even bad calls, that he didn't make any outburst about. He only called out injustices when they were truly egregious and deserving of it. Good for him standing up for what's right. He was literally standing there at the line ready to play. Ings clearly made a bad call motivated more by "standing up to McEnroe" than calling the game properly.
Disagree, and its Becker's right to start serving, to start the point. Everyone who knows about Boris Becker, knows about his ritual before he serves, which John is right, is about ten seconds. Had Boris done that, and McEnroe was looking another direction, THEN there could be a legit argument made that John was delaying. Instead, Boris was doing this dramatic schtick, of looking behind him, then forward, then behind, looking for John to acknowledge him that hes ready. You can say John was a lil rude for not sticking his racquet up, to signal hes ready, but he doesnt HAVE to do that to prove hes ready for the serve. Instead of Hollywooding it, Becker should have went into his routine, and McEnroe would have played the point. Simple as that. Regardless of all of this, I think the way it looked, and how John stated his side, I think Ings should have been able to admit he was wrong, and waived the penalty.
I like John McEnroe now, and I can appreciate his determination and dedication to winning. McEnroe is completely in the right and justified for contesting the umpire’s ridiculous rulings. Even Becker knew the ump was making unjust power move type calls to try and put McEnroe in his place. Absolute hack of an umpire. Glad Mac challenged the calls regardless of the outcome.

McEnroe makes a fair point here and yet the idiots just want to boo hiss and whistle at him??
McEnroe was 100% correct here ....... Becker stopped his motion to serve.
He didn’t stop his motion. He hadn’t started the motion yet. That’s why McEnroe was just standing there waiting
When you get the long angle, you can obviously see he's ready to go and Becker is stalling. He's shrugging his fucking shoulders saying LET'S FUCKING GO!
He's entertaining and funny as heck. But with him asking for a supervisor, it makes me wonder if he inadvertently gave birth to the "Karen" movement.
He's being a Darren.
Karen's husband.
Disgusting when refs/umpires choose to get personally invested. It doesnt matter if john was talking smack about his family, part of the job is to be entirely impartial/ objective. Always pathetic when the ref needs his presence felt (joey crawford)
McEnroe is completely in the right and justified for contesting the umpire’s ridiculous rulings. Even Becker knew the ump was making unjust power move type calls to try and put McEnroe in his place. Absolute hack of an umpire. Glad Mac challenged the calls regardless of the outcome.
Mac was correct on this one
lmao....."Karen McEnroe"
Darren McEnroe......🤣
What a big breaker of baloons that was John...LOL
Which of these two players is now in prison?
Imagine being the guy playing McEnroe lol
Those were the days. It added spice to the game. Now if you look wrong its a ten thousand dollar fine. The only thing I can say is at times he took it to long. But he rules. Fantastic. Him and Connors. True rivalry. Now its political correctness. Just money and prestige. It was more real back then. Everything meant more. Now its fake. Money, power along with talent, but its not the individual anymore. Not a personality. Just a wheel in a cogweb of greed.
McEnroe was completely correct in this case. The umpire clearly is holding a bias against McEnroe. Disgusting how the match commentators don't have the courage to call out Richard Ings for his unprofessionalism.
hell that was like watching noddy and big ears falling out. Then mr roly poly man joins in ....
Richard went on to become a very good tv commentator for EuroSport, I believe 🤔
Did Mac end up losing this match?!
lot of photographers there - I wonder where all those pictures are today?
Thanks for the upload. I watched a lot more tennis years ago with different styles of play and personalities. Too many rallies and hugging now.
exact my opinion ! It' so boring today!
I don’t understand why people find rallying boring. I don’t think you guys have a smart enough understanding of tennis
Why didn’t Becker serve it? McEnroe was standing there ready
McEnroe was right…He was waiting to play and the snowflake in the chair took several minutes and waited for visual cues to make the call…Don’t blame him one bit for being pissed!
His opponent even says "He guys, I took too much time"
"I want the supervisor"
Ok Karen.... Haha
The umpire has to remember and watch eternally that he was petty and wrong and used poor judgment. Mc gets to chuckle and sit back with pride that once again he was right and stood up for himself and the game.
