I think Lendl loved it when McEnroe went off on one. It was a fantastic rivalry, both were gladiators, gosh I miss those days.

John had the best eye in Tennis. When he saw a Ball out, it was out. Thats why he had so many troubles with officials. He wouldnt back down when he knew he was right. Lendl serve was clearly out you see it even without stopping the Tape...

The thing about McEnroe's tantrums was that 75% of the time he went off, he was right.

That's very true. I saw a match the other day when he was in a match with Connors, in China i think it was. And the lines-lady called a shot he hit out, that was clearly in.
He went over and pointed it then started to argue, but he received a chorus of boos and hisses, then he just moved on. But i replayed the shot over and over, and it was so clearly in that it was a shame to see him get robbed like that.
But yes usually after he argues that way, he psyches himself up, and places his opponent in a mental fog, then goes on to win. And i for one used to love it when he blew up on them. I would sit there and laugh the whole time.

Terrible example to a generation of youngsters. It should have been stamped out at the start (by applying harsh penalties) for the good of the sport.

The difference then and now is that winning points had to be set up, now with the rackets being more powerful its who can hit the ball the hardest.

These entertaining little "tournaments" outside of the regular Pro circuit were a beauty to watch in the 1980s. Things like these, where players aren't just competing for a trophy or fame, would sure help the sport of tennis these days.

Martina Navratilova said that unlike today, low level tournaments weren't considered tune up for the slams. They played every level tournament to win it. Jimmy Connors holds the record for most tournament won, and many of them included ATP 250 tournaments and some exhibitions too. Lendl is 2nd behind him. This is why they both held on to the #1 ranking for such a long time.
