The problem in the 1989 WCT Dallas Finals semifinal match between Lendl and McEnroe was that chair umpire Gerry Armstrong misheard what Lendl said to him late in the 4th set when Lendl thought that McEnroe's serve was wide of the ad court singles' sideline and then falsely accused Lendl of using the "f" word when the audio of the match clearly proved that Lendl said, "Same stupid lady as last night". "Lendl decided to do two things. He began watching his diet. In the old days, many players were content with burgers and beers and didn’t really pay attention to what they ate. Second, Lendl began working off-court, doing weight-training. Until then, most players had thought working with weights would make you muscle-bound and slow, so few players bothered with weight-training."
Warriors. . .
Mac is a genius while Lendl is a plodder.
Hahaha, players like Mac, Lendl, and Connors back in the 80's were absolute ASSHOLES but I've got to admit, it was entertaining to watch! Everything today is so polite and PC. I remember watching Connors in '86 from 3 feet away curse out a woman sitting right behind me who was telling him to stop arguing and play tennis. A guy I know watched Mac curse out another fan with 4 letter words not caring in the least bit that a bunch of kids were right in front of him. Those were the good ole days, lol!
Jonathan 916 I’ve only seen clips of these legends. But in those clips McEnroe seems to be the worst.
The only player today that bitches and complains on a routine basis is that bully Serena.
I saw McEnroe act like a total ass to a woman who was taking his photo on a practice court. What a jerk.
Don't put Lendl in with those shitheads McEnroe and Connors. Wrong category altogether.
@@jeffstranks1055 lol yeah I'm a huge McEnroe fan but Lendl was not in the least bit as bad as him and Jimmy and only blew up now and then
The real problem is that the serve was obviously wide and the chair should have seen and overridden it. At least they finally have reliable electronic line calling.
At any rate, there's no point in comparing eras. Same with every sport. Way back when guys who won
Lendl didn't play at Roland Garros 1990(in which very probably would have won)to training two months only on grass to finally try to win Wimbledon, but he failed on SF against Edberg.I think Lendl despite never wins the Championships he played 2 finals and at least 4 times in SF
5 times in sf actually
Regardless of whether the umpire made an error sitting in your chair and refusing to play is never going to end well is it ?
Landl was stoic, which doesn't work well in today's world. He was one of my favorite players back then and he got shafted on points at times.
I was just thinking that lol. He looks and acts just like Berdy
Your chances of playing the point were better than arguing a call back in the day.
Hmmm. Lendl was right, the serve was well wide.
this is fascinating, usually Mac is the one pissed at the refs
These days were awesome lol!🤣😂
never liked lendl, yet we have to be fair: he was 100% right here
I've gotten to meet him 2 times. He's actually very friendly and obviously an incredible tennis player.
Why is Corbin Bensen umpiring?
First time McEnroe just sat back and kept his mouth shut
