4:23 of all the years I've spent playing Pokémon, I had no idea one of my favourite items, the Scope Lens, made its debut in Gen II. I used Mystery Gift on Pokémon Stadium 2 almost everyday as a kid and was lucky enough to receive some of the rare decorations (N64, surfing Pikachu doll, Lapras doll) but never a Scope Lens. 8:29 the Gen II DV/IV system also made it so that females of a 7-1 gender ratio species could *not* be shiny since shininess required an Attack IV of at least 2 and females of those species maxed out at 1. Even though the Special stat was split into Sp.Atk & Sp.Def in Gen II, the two stats shared the same DV in order to maintain backwards compatibility; Sp. Def didn't receive a separate IV or its own EV vitamin (Zinc) until Gen III. Another thing about the IV system is that Pokémon of female-only species were the *only* females that could potentially have max Attack IVs in Gen II, which meant mons like Kangaskhan and Nidoqueen could reach their full physical potential whereas female Machamp or Tyranitar *couldn't.* Whenever I play a Gen II game, I prefer male physical attackers (but anything goes for special attackers.)

It's weird why they haven't used the Lapras-doll sprite for the actual Lapras if they already had it. In-game you will never be able to see that sprite. Only the surfing-sprite in another colour.
I wanted to have a Steelix, so I tried to get it on the Route 38. I didn't try much and could get it. By the way, you don't need to catch wild Magnemites if you have a pokemon with steal, with is much more simple. I got my Scyther with it, and he is the next one to become Scizor :P
According to several trainers in the lighthouse, Jasmine used to be a Rock type Gym Leader, and her switch to Steel was a recent change. The reason for females having a lower attack DV than males was so they could still trade with the gen 1 games. It was a way for gen 1 mons to come over and work as intended.
You're missing a big part of that. Here was their problem: - They needed Gender to remain static no matter how many times a pokemon was traded back to gen 1 - Gen 1 doesn't track Gender - - Therefore they needed Gender to be deterministic based solely on characteristics gen 1 already tracks. - They chose DVs because those are static and hidden - Here was their system: If the attack DV was above a species-dependent value, the pokemon was male. If not, the pokemon was female. - - This was fully functional, but it meant that female pokemon had lower attack DVs than their male counterparts. It's not a bug.
@@ryanderenbecker8837 That's what they probably should have done... but they didn't, and now we're dealing with the consequences. Either way, someone would have to get that coveted DV=15.

On a related note, I thought the move Mach Punch was introduced in Gen 3. Then I found out it existed in Gen 2.
@@drygnfyre During Gen 3, I thought Vital Throw was a Gen 3 move but then I looked in my Pokémon Stadium 2 book and found out it was introduced in Gen 2 (but was exclusive to the Machamp line.)
@@Warhawk9012 There's a lot of weird stuff in the early gens. Aerodactyl couldn't learn Rock moves until the Stadium games. Charizard couldn't Fly in Red/Blue. It's weird watching videos about older gens and seeing how barren a lot of them were in regards to move pools.
@@drygnfyreIn Yellow Charizard can learn fly at least

Jasmine's gym originally was the lighthouse, hence why she's on a 2F.
The code was scrapped, but not completely, with the redesign of the city.
I discovered your channel yesterday and I couldn't be happier
Thanks for watching! :)
The Lapras is used NOWHERE else in the Overworld. The Union Cave Lapras just uses the Surf Sprite.
My cannon is that Blue caught all but 2 of the 151, Mew and Mewtwo. We can assume there are multiple legendary birds as seen in other regions, and Red caught Mew and Mewtwo. Blue even brags about how many Pokemon he caught in Gen 1.
The Snorlax fact blew my mind. I'm convinced most players caught the Snorlax near Celadon and simply battled or fled the Snorlax on the fishing rod route. Meaning it could absolutely be around the Diglett cave area if it moved around a bit.
Could be wrong, but its genius, if so!
Great video

I always imagined the blocks in blues gym to be rubble from where the gym was abandoned and poorly maintained
Tbf, the kimono girls also focus on Eeveelutions in the same city as Bell Tower, so I think Ecruteak just has a thing for Eevee overall.
The lighthouse is the in-game replacement for Jasmineʼs gym.
I think the Brick Piece item is used to evolve Eevee to a Ghost type

When I was a kid, I thought Porygon was another Eeveelution, since it has a similar cry to Vaporeon, its name ends with - on, like Jolteon, Flareon, and Vaporeon, and its entry came immediately after them.
Yeah, I think I thought that the Leaf Stone turned Eevee into Porygon when I was a kid. Always confused me that the Leaf Stone didn’t do anything to them!

Silver was my first Pokémon game. The kanto being incomplete bothered me so bad as a kid. So much so I got blue soon after silver.
Blue probably knew that in 14 years there was going to be a movie dedicated to Legos so he warned the Players about it.

Uh, another fun fact about Gen 2: The Mystery Gift method of connecting to another player's game in Gen 2? Yeah, that's present in the Virtual Console release on 3DS, where unlike trading and link battling, Mysterygift in that game does not use the normal wireless communication method on Virtual Console games of Gen 2. No, it makes use of the Infer red communication part of the 3DS, just like it did on the Gameboy. A part of the 3DS that like it was for the Gameboy, barely any games made use of that part of the handheld console.
I am surprised that you had an entire section about the odd to rare items that Kanto Pokémon hold and didn't bring up the Lightball that's carried specifically by the Partner Pikachu from Pokémon Yellow. Especially as that's the only way to aquire this item in the Game at all.
Nope, there's one more way to get one. Swipe it from Red's Pikachu. He's got one boosting it's stats. Use Thief on his Pikachu and you have an extra light ball.

I loved playing Silver Version so much
We knew about Whitney’s gym because most of us that bought Gold/Silver also got the guide book for it and it showed the entire gym layout.
One flaw in Blue owning 224 different Pokémon between the two generations. You said he likely hasn’t been to Johto, but the 224 would definitely include some Johto Pokémon species, as only 145 of the 224 would be Kanto species(legendaries excluded)
Johto pokemon show up in Kanto though. The only way to get Houndour is in Kanto, for example
@@skykrow true, but what about the ones that don’t? The numbers don’t seem to add up to him not knowing about Johto at all.
I was thinking 224 is the number of pokemon after you exclude previous evolutions, but I didn't count
also why people also assume that every pokemon got caught and not simply, you know, evolved? especially the starters
Have you heard of Trading? Canonically that is a thing in-universe that people do.
Nice video!
I actually didn't know that about Whitney's gym, that is cool as hell

A Game Genie code can restore the door to the Safari Zone. The trigger is still there, it just doesn't activate because it's not on a door tile.
NB blocks were amazing!
Imma be honest I had no idea I clicked on a Smith plays vid I just wanted to see gen 2 stuff but it's a nice surprise had no clue he had a pokemon channel
Just started it, welcome!!😎
Wait, if we say that Blue doesn't have Gen 2 starters because he hasn't been to Johto, than the 224 balls/Pokemon thing makes absolutely no sense. How did he get any Johto exclusive Pokemon if he hasn't been to Johto yet?
I've never heard anyone pronounce Scizor as Caesar before

I at one time owned the first three generation games. Red all the way to Emerald. I miss my yellow and crystal versions.
Super Mario World 2 also has a level featureing N&B blocks.
It's weird why they haven't used the Lapras-doll sprite for the actual Lapras if they already had it. In-game you will never be able to see that sprite. Only the surfing-sprite in another colour.
1:59 -- I actually have never taken any notice of that!!
I thought i was the only one who thought blue's gym was made of lego.🤣
I wanted to have a Steelix, so I tried to get it on the Route 38. I didn't try much and could get it. By the way, you don't need to catch wild Magnemites if you have a pokemon with steal, with is much more simple. I got my Scyther with it, and he is the next one to become Scizor :P
I remember Mystery Gift from these games. I once got a N64 in the game.
Always bugged me the obvious lack of steel in jasmines gym
According to several trainers in the lighthouse, Jasmine used to be a Rock type Gym Leader, and her switch to Steel was a recent change. Obviously, this plays off the fact that her Onix evolved into a Steelix, but since her gym is still full of rocks, I think it's funny to imagine we just happened to challenge her before the gym had a chance to be remodeled.
SO SO SO SO SO GREAT to see people still making curiosity-like videos of GSC < 3
I got the Onix doll from the N64 mystery gift over 14 years ago.
It's a misconception that Clefable will hold leftovers when traded to a gen 2 game, the only Pokémon that holds leftovers is Snorlax
Tajiri being a bug catcher is amazing. Considering the fact that pokemon is based off of bug catching!
Gen 2 is my favorite gen since Crystal was the first pokemon game to have pokemon movie before battle and in the pokedex
The existence of the Kimono girls also proves that the legendary beasts were once eeveelutions
That blue gym trivia is pretty cool, shows yes he's a very good trainer catching a large percentage of pokemon, but not good enough at least to capture the legendaries or maybe has no need for them

Ohh I wish I knew the metal coat thing sooner, it always bothered me to choose between Steelix and Scizor. Pretty interesting facts.
i thought the lego gym was a reference to blue being the new gym leader and it was "under construction" but since he is rarely around progress is slow.
My favorite mystery gift I received was a surfing pikachu doll.
Oh, snap! So that’s what Miss Kawakami was doing before she wound up teaching at Shujin Academy! 😂
The reason for females having a lower attack DV than males was so they could still trade with the gen 1 games. It was a way for gen 1 mons to come over and work as intended.
Makes zero sense 0/10 explanation
@@HistoryandReviews lol this it's funny cause the name it's self but bravo
You're missing a big part of that. Here was their problem:
- They needed Gender to remain static no matter how many times a pokemon was traded back to gen 1
- Gen 1 doesn't track Gender
- - Therefore they needed Gender to be deterministic based solely on characteristics gen 1 already tracks.
- They chose DVs because those are static and hidden
- Here was their system: If the attack DV was above a species-dependent value, the pokemon was male. If not, the pokemon was female.
- - This was fully functional, but it meant that female pokemon had lower attack DVs than their male counterparts. It's not a bug.
@@natnew32They could've easily made it a scattered selection more like Hidden Power tho
@@ryanderenbecker8837 That's what they probably should have done... but they didn't, and now we're dealing with the consequences. Either way, someone would have to get that coveted DV=15.
What you might've forgotten is that he probably only keeps fully evolved pokemon since he prefers strong ones and them being battle ready, dropping the number even more.
