A suspicion is possible but I don’t think so. He knew she was highborn and a northerner. He knew she was posing as a boy to be safer than a girl and he suspected the reason she was hiding that she was highborn was because she was a northerner and the war going on and respected her for both, not because she was actually a Stark. He would’ve locked her up to trade for Jaime since they already had Sansa.
Love that he chuckled when Arya got the right book immediately reading title...he was starting to describe it as he would have done with a peasent. The laugh was a gotcha 😅😂
The relationship between Arya and Tywin is low key the most amazing mentorship that could never happen. The amount of respect she earned as a servant from this magnificent Bsturd is jaw dropping and I wish we could have seen Arya raised by him.
Crazy how a Stark girl was right in his midst and Lord Tywin was lecturing another on knowing his houses apart from one another. And the very house they are at war with the daughter or Ned is stood right there 😂
@davidmauriciogutierrezespi5244 no he did not. He knew she was highborn and northern but did not even suspect she was arya. He didn't even know arya was missing. Cersi didn't tell anyone. Tyrion didn't find out til he got to kings landing and he didn't tell tywin either. He has no reason to think this is arya because he thinks arya is in kings landing
I have to agree with Dragonprincess here. If Tywin suspected he had an actual daughter of House Stark in hand, he’d have kept a much tighter grip on her. He likely thought she was the daughter of a lesser northern house.
I kind of wish Tywin and Arya had more time together. Arya was my favorite character and the fact that she impressed a terrible old man and made him actually happy/proud was an interesting dynamic.
Now that would be an AU fanfic. Arya becoming Tywin's unofficial protégé. That would be one hell of twist. Would she work as a double agent for the starks, or could she something else entirely under Tywin? If Tyrion wasn't a dwarf and his mum not died at childbirth, he might have the ideal son. But Tywin is at heart still ruthless and will use his children and underlings for the benefit of the Lannister future. That would also include Arya in this AU.
Seeing the interactions with Tywin and Arya was so interesting. He was fond of her and found her interesting and even amusing all the while not knowing how valuable she was
Damon Marbrand:" Where are those infantry movement reports, seven hells!!" Marlyn Dormand:" These reports must have been false trying to lure our forces elsewhere!"
Arya's time at Herrenhall was some of my favorite material from GoT. It humaized both her and Tywin in ways that most shows can only dream of. You learn so much about each character from their time togethere here.
Tywin see Arya how she wanted to be seen … from a father … which is why this scene are so well written … and the show director knows how to display it , lot more than what I say for the dance of the dragon …
I like to think Tywin was hoping to find out that Arya was an unclaimed bastard so he could convince everyone she was Tyrion's daughter and have one grandchild that wasn't a complete disappointment.
The dynamics between them was great. He sees something of himself in her that is not in any of his children (maybe Tyrion) and definitely not in his grandchildren who act more like Trustfund kids.
absolutely love the dynamic and chemistry and the way they play off one another. Charles Dance and more importantly Maisie helping to humanize and even enjoy the "deplorable" Tywin Lannister. Even going so far as to get a chuckle and a rare smile from him, which is no easy task. ask his entire family, Joanna included. nevermind, they're all dead (and Tyrion is, as of his "father's" final words "no son of mine") this duo is right up there w/ Tyrion and Bronn (and later Pod and his magic caulk) and Arya and the Hound.
Always interesting when matters of class come up. Does anyone remember in "Eragon" when this came up? Eragon's brother turned out to be, like, a Hound-level fighter and he became a commander or a captain, but he couldn't read. Nothing ever really came of it cuz the series was written by a teenager but it was still pretty interesting to see people who were MORE than capable of taking care of themselves, defending others, even forming grand strategy, being unable to read their officer's reports. Real class stuff. There just isn't any TIME to read when your busy farming, or training so hard you can kill 198 soldiers in a row without stopping
I remember listening to the audiobook. I remember two things: - 1) The narrator definitely gave the dragon (I forget the name) the same type of voice they gave the nine-tails for the dub of Naruto. - 2) I fell asleep at one point while listening and was suddenly WAYYY farther in when I woke up. I can only compare it to how I imagine waking up from a coma feels, but while finding yourself in a different time zone or something; You're dazed, lost, confused, and nothing seems to make sense. (Not that I've been in a coma before)
Are you talking about Roran? I thought he was a cousin of Eragon's. Roran was a beast if I remember correctly. He scared off a platoon of enemy soldiers that were charging at him by sitting on a chair and drinking in front of them/their captain (in a war zone). It's been a bit, though.
a) Eragon is not good written and a fanfic level of worldbuilding. b) A general can read, explicit simple military orders, most of them were not able to read Latin in history and this made them non-readers, as books and documents were in Latin, while normal writing for normal use was partly in Latin and partly in German without grammatical rules and dependent on the use and the users. c) Most communications happen on the field by word and messenger, because paper is expensive and writing is difficult on a horse on the road with rain and stuff. d) even in the 16th century the whole library on the move on the catholic side in the 30th year war in Germany had less than 50 books in their library. Most of them were the bible. Half of them about geography, rivers and old tactical historic classics. They were themself so embarrassed about the lack of books in their own army, that they stole the books of the local priest and doubled their books collections (mainly about singing protestant songs, as the city was former protestant). e) Books are crazy expensive even in 16th century with book printing, emerging newspapers and increase of literacy in Latin by Latin Jesuit and puritan schools in every small city. We speak about 2-3 years of salary of a rich craftsman. Salary, not his profit. Often rich people bought a single bible with the money they saved over their whole live.....rich people....in cities.... f) i read once a historic novel about the 100years war about a commoner and actual bastard of a lord. The british side used him with the connections of their related French local lords in the Normandy. After they killed whole French nobility on the male side, they married him to a small low and poor nobleman-daughter without other relatives or ground possessions- AND even this marriage of a former commoner, who became a knight for saving the prince of wales in battle, with a meaningless, irrelevant noble-orphan, was controversial. He got his actual property by invading an defeating a local bandit group, that took over a small city in the chaos of the 100years war and the defeat of the French. He had to learn to ride, religion, writing, lyric, dancing and eating without his hands, but with spoon and knife etc. It took 5 years for other nobles to not piss on his mere existence. At the end of the book he was more a French nobleman than a British commoner, spoke only French and will probably betray the British side.... this is abaptation of a commoner into nobility. It forms you to a different human. Your past is never respected, even if you do a miracle and save a king in a massive victory for this king. Even rich merchants were disrespected by nobles. merchants, who directly influenced voted for the pope and the emperor...A thing most people in modern time forgets is the god-given honesty of class differences, believed by EVERYONE. At the end of GoT Tarly requested a vote for a king....these lords laughed in the show, but in reality they would have been confused. they represent the commoners, who can not argue about politics as they never had any form of education, they don't know the structure of a kingdom or the names of the lords in the next territory and thereby need lords as their representation on a political level. farmers knew this! lords were trained to think about this Duty, not as a privilege, as a holy burden.
Arya is so cool and got so much symphathy, that her enemies would like her,!!!❤ She is one of the most coolest persons in the history of Westeros! I am sure, that the warrior queen NYMIRIA would loved her!!!
If Tywin had treated all his children as thoughtfully, respectfully, and achievement-worthy as he did Arya, then House Lannister would have been one harmoniously happy house. The actor here, Charles Dance, is an absolute CREDIT to the profession of acting. Arya knows he likely saved her life by taking her in for awhile.
It still amazes me how a man so cold and unfeeling to his own family is able to feel pride and satisfaction in a passing relationship with an equally cold and closed off girl entirely unrelated to him.
@@scottmatheson3346 Actually there is this one fanfic on ao3 called A Wolf Amongst Lions by Kallypso. It's where Tywin finds out his cupbearer is Arya Stark and now has another bargaining chip. It's really good and well-written as well.

MAN I miss these older seasons. In the books 📚 they specifically mention how incredibly hard it is, to get Lord Tywin to laugh, & Arya manages to impress him, more than once. Wish we had WAYYY more scenes like this, the later seasons wasted ALL this potential, on big, dumb action. There's @ least 2 different scenes where Arya impresses Tywin, & gets him 2 laugh out loud. I'd watch a show that made an entire SEASON of just the interactions between Tywin & Arya
Arya Stark was, is and will always be my favourite Stark. It's astonishing that among so many great characters like Robb, Ned, Sansa, Catelyn, Bran and even Jon Snow I ended up loving her the most. She keeps honor in her heart and cunning in her pocket
I honestly feel that if the events didn't go the way they did, and the Starks and the Lannisters weren't at each other's throats that they would have been completely unstoppable, sadly they had more in common with each other than they knew
They were at each other's throats because Cersei Lannister thought she could put her inbred bastard on the Iron Throne. Relations between their Houses weren't helped when said inbred bastard cut off Lord Eddard's head. Their relationship was already tense after Tywin ordered the deaths of Elia Martell and her children and Lord Eddard found Jaime Lannister sitting on the Iron Throne with the bloodied Mad King beneath him.
Can you imagine Arya getting an education from Tywin? Coupled with her fighting and assassination skills she’d be the most dangerous person in Westeros.
I honestly thought Arya slipped up here revealing that she could read. In those times, it is EXTREMELY RARE to have educated commoners. That could've given her background away to someone as sharp as Tywin. Shat my pants! 🥶
They had an awesome parent/child dynamic. Yet another example of what amazing relationships might have existed were they not on opposite sides of a war
I imagine he hands it to a certain servant (maester maybe) and tells them where its supposed to go, no way all those lords worry themselves with anything beyond just writing it.
had one of those lawyer's disclaimers at the end saying this message is privileged communication and anyone who is not the intended recipient must return it immediately. the starks are honorable so they'd comply.
Well when you are Tywin you expect correspondence in time of war. Communication between commanding officers and field Marshalls is off the utmost importance. Spies are important to report what they know. Strategies tactics and information would give one an edge no matter how slight it may be could be the reason for victory. So I'm positive that him not hearing back from his allies is a giveaway. Then afterwards he would inquire as to whom it was sent to and who made the mistake. He's intelligent enough to play detective and figure out who's to blame. Amory Lorch is his cousin I believe and the one whom he gave the order to. I'm sure he knows that he's kind of an oaf good enough only to brutalize peasants.

Tywin to Tyrion: My cupbearer can devise better strategies than you. 😂 😂 😂
Tyrion: of course, she is Arya, from House Stark, Ned's daughter! 😊
The relationship between Arya and Tywin is low key the most amazing mentorship that could never happen. The amount of respect she earned as a servant from this magnificent Bsturd is jaw dropping and I wish we could have seen Arya raised by him.
I desperately wanted more scenes with Tywin and Arya.
Crazy how a Stark girl was right in his midst and Lord Tywin was lecturing another on knowing his houses apart from one another. And the very house they are at war with the daughter or Ned is stood right there 😂
Tywin knew, or at least heavily suspected her identity, but kept her as an ace in his sleeve
I can’t come up with any scenario where it would make sense, but a timeline where Tywin accepts Arya as an understudy & ally would be entertaining.
Can you imagine if Arya came up with a battle plan and it worked?
No way she's going to help Tywin beat Robb though
Well she infiltrated murdered and escaped House Frey. That plan worked out well
Yeah her plan would have been "run directly into my brother's swords"
She will. Letting her brother capture Tywin faster.
@@brettbrooks5511Though not exactly in those words but something that would make Tywin feel like the lesser lord he scolded.
I kind of wish Tywin and Arya had more time together. Arya was my favorite character and the fact that she impressed a terrible old man and made him actually happy/proud was an interesting dynamic.
I'm imagining Arya growing up to be Tywin's Master of Assassins.
I could watch Tywin and little Arya all day. All the scenes with them were great.
Arya looking at the other guy like "yeah you're fucked" 😂
Now that would be an AU fanfic. Arya becoming Tywin's unofficial protégé. That would be one hell of twist. Would she work as a double agent for the starks, or could she something else entirely under Tywin? If Tyrion wasn't a dwarf and his mum not died at childbirth, he might have the ideal son. But Tywin is at heart still ruthless and will use his children and underlings for the benefit of the Lannister future. That would also include Arya in this AU.
Seeing the interactions with Tywin and Arya was so interesting. He was fond of her and found her interesting and even amusing all the while not knowing how valuable she was
Damon Marbrand:" Where are those infantry movement reports, seven hells!!"
Marlyn Dormand:" These reports must have been false trying to lure our forces elsewhere!"
Tywin had such high respect for Rob Stark and the north, even though it was the enemy
Arya's time at Herrenhall was some of my favorite material from GoT. It humaized both her and Tywin in ways that most shows can only dream of. You learn so much about each character from their time togethere here.
For Tywin to be able to speak to such a monster in that way and espouse fear (and never mind consequences) shows us all the power that he commands
This
Charles Dance would play a terrific Dracula, Sith Lord, or Jedi Master.
Tywin see Arya how she wanted to be seen … from a father … which is why this scene are so well written … and the show director knows how to display it , lot more than what I say for the dance of the dragon …
"I judged you might be good for something more than brutalizing peasants" why is that line so funny lmao
"My cubbearer can read better than you"
Man that's painful 😂
I like to think Tywin was hoping to find out that Arya was an unclaimed bastard so he could convince everyone she was Tyrion's daughter and have one grandchild that wasn't a complete disappointment.
That's a tywin thing to do
"My cupbearer can read better than you" he said that like a proud father lol.
The dynamics between them was great. He sees something of himself in her that is not in any of his children (maybe Tyrion) and definitely not in his grandchildren who act more like Trustfund kids.
Arya is a survivor and he sees that and respects it from someone who he knows was probably born into a noble family
Arya is the daughter Tywin always wanted. Kind wished they'd have spent more time together.
Tywin secretly wishes he had a child like her.
absolutely love the dynamic and chemistry and the way they play off one another.
Charles Dance and more importantly Maisie helping to humanize and even enjoy the "deplorable" Tywin Lannister.
Even going so far as to get a chuckle and a rare smile from him, which is no easy task.
ask his entire family, Joanna included. nevermind, they're all dead
(and Tyrion is, as of his "father's" final words "no son of mine")
this duo is right up there w/ Tyrion and Bronn (and later Pod and his magic caulk) and Arya and the Hound.
Note Arya,s smile when he says " maybe you should devise our next battle plan while you're about it "
her smirk at the last one got me....
“My cupbearer can read better than you”
Arya and this total buffoon who have never seen each other before: 👀
Always interesting when matters of class come up.
If i remember specifically his brother kills some major dark wizards with a hammer
You're making me want to re-read that series now
I remember listening to the audiobook.
I remember two things:
- 1) The narrator definitely gave the dragon (I forget the name) the same type of voice they gave the nine-tails for the dub of Naruto.
- 2) I fell asleep at one point while listening and was suddenly WAYYY farther in when I woke up. I can only compare it to how I imagine waking up from a coma feels, but while finding yourself in a different time zone or something;
You're dazed, lost, confused, and nothing seems to make sense.
It's been a bit, though.
a)
Eragon is not good written and a fanfic level of worldbuilding.
b)
A general can read, explicit simple military orders, most of them were not able to read Latin in history and this made them non-readers, as books and documents were in Latin, while normal writing for normal use was partly in Latin and partly in German without grammatical rules and dependent on the use and the users.
c)
Most communications happen on the field by word and messenger, because paper is expensive and writing is difficult on a horse on the road with rain and stuff.
d)
even in the 16th century the whole library on the move on the catholic side in the 30th year war in Germany had less than 50 books in their library. Most of them were the bible. Half of them about geography, rivers and old tactical historic classics. They were themself so embarrassed about the lack of books in their own army, that they stole the books of the local priest and doubled their books collections (mainly about singing protestant songs, as the city was former protestant).
e)
Books are crazy expensive even in 16th century with book printing, emerging newspapers and increase of literacy in Latin by Latin Jesuit and puritan schools in every small city. We speak about 2-3 years of salary of a rich craftsman. Salary, not his profit. Often rich people bought a single bible with the money they saved over their whole live.....rich people....in cities....
f)
i read once a historic novel about the 100years war about a commoner and actual bastard of a lord. The british side used him with the connections of their related French local lords in the Normandy. After they killed whole French nobility on the male side, they married him to a small low and poor nobleman-daughter without other relatives or ground possessions-
AND even this marriage of a former commoner, who became a knight for saving the prince of wales in battle, with a meaningless, irrelevant noble-orphan, was controversial.
That dude was perfect as Tywin. While I was reading the novels I pictured him playing the role.
Ah yes... the interim Mountain.
Amory Lorch, actually
Different guy. Similar to the second Mountain, but he's much shorter and his name is Amory Lorch, as @DGAdison has said above.
The manticore they call him
The stick that rides.
Yes the guy who cut jamie hand in the book@@DGAdison
If Tywin had treated all his children as thoughtfully, respectfully, and achievement-worthy as he did Arya, then House Lannister would have been one harmoniously happy house. The actor here, Charles Dance, is an absolute CREDIT to the profession of acting. Arya knows he likely saved her life by taking her in for awhile.
If Tywin had to pick between Cersei and Arya as his successor, I’m pretty sure he’d choose Arya. Lol…😂😂😂
It still amazes me how a man so cold and unfeeling to his own family is able to feel pride and satisfaction in a passing relationship with an equally cold and closed off girl entirely unrelated to him.
The not so subtle movements on tywins face. My god what an actor❤
She's a swordsman like Jamie, smart like Cersei, and clever like Tyrion
I wanna read a fanfic where Arya & Tywin get to kick it together more
are you sure? because fanfic tends to degenerate into slash fic.
@@scottmatheson3346 Actually there is this one fanfic on ao3 called A Wolf Amongst Lions by Kallypso. It's where Tywin finds out his cupbearer is Arya Stark and now has another bargaining chip. It's really good and well-written as well.
Is that chuckle he gives when Arya gets the book immediately the only time Tywin laughed in the show
Tywin's charisma almost makes you wish he was an honorable man.
Tywin *Too his bannermen* "if you mess up again, it will be you they parody the reins of Castamere about."
Tywin *To his cupbearer* *Grandfather mode activated*
I feel like in a different life, Arya and Tywin would have gotten along so well. He would have loved teaching her because she loved learning.
That "CAN YOU READ ?" feels like it's adressed directly to the writers of the last 4 seasons. 😂😂😂
There is absolutely no one who could have played Lord Tywin Lannister any better!
I love that Tywin teased Arya about devising a battle plan in front of the rest of his men. Nothing like telling them a little girl could do a better job. And she loved the compliment.
Tywin’s definitely a better stepdad than actual father 🤣
MAN I miss these older seasons. In the books 📚 they specifically mention how incredibly hard it is, to get Lord Tywin to laugh, & Arya manages to impress him, more than once. Wish we had WAYYY more scenes like this, the later seasons wasted ALL this potential, on big, dumb action. There's @ least 2 different scenes where Arya impresses Tywin, & gets him 2 laugh out loud. I'd watch a show that made an entire SEASON of just the interactions between Tywin & Arya
"I thought you would've been worth more that brutalizing peasants, looks like I was wrong" Offfff 😅😅😅😅
Arya Stark was, is and will always be my favourite Stark. It's astonishing that among so many great characters like Robb, Ned, Sansa, Catelyn, Bran and even Jon Snow I ended up loving her the most. She keeps honor in her heart and cunning in her pocket
Arya and Tywin had such great chemistry, wish they had more screen time togehter
Arya and Tywin in Harrenhall was must see TV however short lived it was.
I quite liked Tywin's scenes with Arya. I would have liked to see more of there short term relationship
Arya giving him attitude in a second long look 👌
Tywin always respected talent
now theres a good reason to educate yourself. Tywin is always so encouraging
Can you imagine Arya getting an education from Tywin? Coupled with her fighting and assassination skills she’d be the most dangerous person in Westeros.
The guy wasn't even big, I remember watching this being so confused who he was.
He is the guy who killed Yorren (the man who protected Arya since Ned’s execution and helped her flee King Landing)
This bastard was the one that killed elia's martell daughter stabbing her like 100 times, at least in the books
Amory Lorch, not the Mountain
This is not the Mountain
Charles Dance's performance is so immaculate. Tywin is is an evil motherfucker, but he's difficult to hate because he's just so damn charming.
Smartest guy in GoT. He managed to sit out the war and enjoyed living
“kan u reed” I love Tywin, man
For anyone wondering, House Dormund are bannermen for House Karstark.
If Arya had been born into Tywins lannisters the rest of the world combined wouldn’t be enough
Charles Dance stole every scene. Best actor on the show by a country mile
I honestly thought Arya slipped up here revealing that she could read. In those times, it is EXTREMELY RARE to have educated commoners. That could've given her background away to someone as sharp as Tywin. Shat my pants! 🥶
Tywin and Arya's relationship may well be one of the top 2-3 things in which the show changed the book material for the better.
It's amazing Tywin didn't catch anything fishy when a servant was able to read while some of his commanders couldn't
He suspected she was highborn from the way she talked pretty much immediately, but some details like the reading only cemented his opinion.
I really liked these scenes
Oh, Arya would surely devise a clever and successful war plan for Tywin.
..... " leave US"
what an insult!
"You are beneath my cup girl .."
I wish those two had more scenes together. Both of them worked so well with one another
They had an awesome parent/child dynamic. Yet another example of what amazing relationships might have existed were they not on opposite sides of a war
In a another universe Tywin mentored Arya and became a force to be reckoned with
I wonder how they knew who actually got the info? Did he just send it back like "you guys sure you sent this to the right place?"
