Gotta love how Tywin isn't even phased by Tyrion's threat to Joffrey. And right after, you can see a gilmmer of that very threat again within Tywin's eyes.
I'd consider it more of a reminder with Tyrion towards Joffery, similar to what he said in the throne room. He's trying to make sure that Joffery understands that just because he's king, doesn't make him a god. He can't do whatever he wants without consequence. Tywin on the otherhand was fully prepared to get physical with him.
One thing you can give Tywin is that Yes he is a very cruel old man but he’s calculating and does everything for the sake of Legacy and the reputation of their family name. He’s sees that Joffrey is Cruel in a mindless way that doesn’t really matter and a grander scale.
Quite interesting moment, because it’s probably the only time in tv show when we can see that Joffrey really was proud of his “father’s” legacy. And he’s got a point. Tywin was basically waiting for the right moment to act, while Robert and Ned were making history on the battlefield.
Joffrey occassionally has moments of deep clarity in GoT. He's literally the only guy in the show who pushes for the concept of a centralized army loyal to the crown rather than the deeply unreliable vassal system of Westeros. The Targaryens got away without it because they had dragons and then when they didn't it was only a matter of time before they were challenged.
@@unc54 He was the only one actually worried about Daenerys building up an army possibly armed with dragons (it's another brilliant scene between him and Tywin ... the one in the throne room). Other than that I'd go with Olenna's assessment of Joffrey as a character tho: "He really was a c██t, wasn't he?"
He doesn't have a point at all. From the POV of House Lannister (and other folk who would suffer if it fell in the course of conflict), Tywin's decision was perfect. Robert and Ned had their personal motivations and they felt they had no choice but to act that way. Meanwhile: * Tywin had absolutely no reason to show loyalty to Aerys and spend men/materiel for his cause. But if he ended up backing the wrong side in the war, his House as well as the Westerlands would likely suffer what he himself did to King's Landing. * Yes he would prefer to see Aerys removed but Robert and Ned were already sticking their necks for that so why should he? * Tywin is already among the top powerful men in the Kingdom, possibly 2nd most. Compared to what he stands to lose if he gets involved in the war, the incentive of gain here isn't all that much. * Tywin managed to become a part of the "winning side", without having to pay the costs and risks through the long haul of war, while House Baratheon, Stark and their allies hollowed themselves out for it. This is like having your cake and eating, and a total win for House Lannister and it's vassals.
The facial expressions in this scene are golden. Cersei looks at Joffrey in a way that she knows that he’s messed up and she can’t do anything to protect him from her father’s wrath. Varys and Pycelle both look as if they are scared for Joffrey while Tyrion is sitting with a half smile enjoying seeing his family at each others throats

I like that Otto is kinda like a "Tywin light", Alicent is like a "Cersei light" and Aegon II is like a "Joffrey light". However this doesn't make them boring or uninteresting characters. Quite the opposite: by being less radical than their GoT counterparts, they feel more human and more realistic. While Tywin thinks he rules the whole world, Otto is more aware of the limits of his power. While Cersei (as a woman) tries to play a strong man in the world ruled by men, Alicent still has the feminine sensitivity and sentiment. While Joffrey has always been an arrogant bully, Aegon II at least intially tries to be a humble and patient king before loses his temper due to his losses.
Teh way Joffrey looks at Tywin after Tyrios comment expecting him to intervene is pure brilliance, it shows that Tywin has no respect for Joffrey either. Outstanding screen play
Joffrey wasn’t wrong about Tywin. Waiting to see which side is winning the war before committing your armies to them and stealing some of the glory is a cowardly move. Again Tywin tries to take all the credit for winning the battle of the blackwater when he only arrived after Stannis forces were already largely depleted from the defence that Tyrion put up against them. He also got outsmarted by Robb when he had to go up against him fairly and resorted to having him killed during dinner instead because he couldn’t beat Robb on the battlefield.
Tywin was too insecure about his family’s legacy to ever risk losing a battle. In his mind, he probably thought that if he was ever seen defeated by anybody, it would put him on the level of his father, who he hated for being weak.
It’s called being strategic. Patience is key. Read the books and pay attention to Tywins chapters, you’ll see why he is so effective. He destroyed two great houses for defying house Lannister ripping them out from root to stem.
I envy Tywin's cool and wit. Any other person would have acted offended and began an argument. Tywin simply answered calmly and dominated the whole room.
Tywin took notes from Otto. Otto had to deal with spoiled shitheads who have flying nuclear weapons. Tywin never had to deal with dragons, but I think he’d be more effective if it came to be.
@ he’s playing a character with a very stable emotional baseline. It takes a lot to rile Tywin up and hence even minor changes in his tone (as we see when Joff pisses him off in this scene) equal a major change in his mood. This is true in the book as well when it’s mentioned that Tywin almost smiling is a very scary thing to see. Would be a poor performance if Dance played Tywin as emotional as Joff
@@S0LIDSNEK then the character itself has no range at all. And talking about those "minute" Face changes literally half of the actors on this show do it leagues better than him. Charles is cool for what character demands but very mediocre performance regardless
@ Tywin is a tactical statesman; he is shown to rarely let his temper rise or his pleasure be known, and he is often the last one to speak or react at all during political discussions, like in this scene. Other characters genuinely fear to be around him because of this temperament. It’s a contrast to his grandson, who wears all his emotions on his sleeve. But even Joff can sense what the subtle shift in tone means and gets very tense and defensive. I think Tywin is portrayed very well.
@@S0LIDSNEK as I said that charles gave us what character was about. No doubt but if you switch the actor for the role it would not make any difference at all. In GoT you just cannot imagine someone else playing cersei catlyn varys olenna baelish robert because they add something signature to the character and putting charles' mediocre performance above them is an insult
As much as it physically pains me to say it, Joffrey was correct. Tywin's only contribution to the Rebellion was to sack a city that was pretty much already defeated and butcher a frail woman, a baby and a toddler after having sat out the whole thing in the safety of Casterly Rock.
Why does it pain you to say that? It's true. Tywin and the Lannisters are just like Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds: Opportunists who have no true loyalties and only ride on the coattails on whatever moves towards success.
@@samalvey8168 To be honest though he doesn't seem entirely that different from the Mad King, apart from the fact he is young and impressionable enough to be controlled by more influential people at court.
@@samalvey8168 Just because a person might be all of the above, doesn't mean he cannot have a solid perspective on certain things or a valid arguement.
Yeah, but they were technically the last ones standing and became the rulers, albeit temporarily. Makes sense to sit back and watch your enemies destroy each other. To watch your allies weaken and become more dependent on you. There's that saying the most dangerous man in the room is often the quietest. I think that speaks levels to Tywin, he's quiet and cunning. Saying what needs to be said, only when it needs to be said. This gains attention from others, as he doesn't fill the room with nonsense. When he speaks, others listen. When he's insulted he just stares ominously at the insulting with a quiet but dominant demeanor.
Joffrey's actor killed it, the way he starts panting like a vicious chihuahua after he gets owned by Tyrion, the way he's weak but vicious at the same time
Remains one of the most satisfying scenes in the show. Joffrey may be king, but he's no longer the power in King's Landing. Also one of the rare cases where Tywin intervenes on Tyrion's behalf. While he seemed somewhat amused by this whole scene, he jumps in as soon as Joffrey threatens his son. No one threatens a Lannister.
2:21 That look... "If we would be alone, you'd be dead right now, which is why I'm giving you this one opportunity to keep breathing" Joffrey saw in that look that he was a single syllable away from falling from the keeps windows. There is some excellent acting in this scene!
seen this part so many times but only noticed this now: when the music is kicking in, everyone starts looking towards Tywin in silence... so silent you can hear some pidgeons 😂😂
1:19 Tywin is there thinking "Maybe I should have made Tyrion King, at least he wouldn't start idiotic fights and waste valuable resources over less than nothing."
It’s not a fair comparison Aegon is a lot of things but he is still a dragon and is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Joffrey on the other hand is scared just to leave the Red Keep. Aegon has a spine, Joffrey is spineless and yet both appear to be pliable. The only difference is Joffrey is the publicly pliable and malleable in front of others. Aegon is pliable and manipulated discreetly Larys and Cole for example.
Tywin was such a great character. Cold, calculated, and well-spoken, but not unnecessarily cruel. Dude had no fear, but knew how to rule with an iron fist.
Loved his character. My only regret with the show is that his character never had an interaction with the Ned Stark or Stannis characters. A scene with the three of them talking would have been prceless!
The other day, I realised that the previous time we saw Tywin and Joffrey interact Tywin told Joffrey to come to the Tower of the Hand to attend small council meetings. He goes, only for Tywin to dismiss him. He had complete control.
Joffrey looked up to Robert Baratheon a lot, and shared his disdain for the Lannisters. When he becomes king, he tries to assert his control over House Lannister, first with Cersei when she slapped him and before his wedding, and he did bring her to heel. He then tries to go for Tywin, the real power in Westeros, first when he summons him to the throne room, and then here. And it is this moment where Joffrey actually realises he's the most powerful man in Westeros in name only
whats Crazy is that even though hes wrong... hes technically right His father is not Robert who took the crown.... his father is Jamie who killed the mad king though
Charles Dance in this scene is one of my favourites in the entire show, no idea how but he just looks over it and not willing to put up with any BS - really makes you know not to mess with Tywin
You can see Joffrey visibly recoiled after Tyrion's threat. He feels in his guts that the threat is very real and actually turned back to look to Tywin, as if to check if how he'd react with a threat on his life from Tyrion.
Joffrey: I'M NOT TIRED!

This was a prime example of that saying "Beware the old soldier, there's a reason he's old”
Charles Dance recreated the book version of Tywin so perfectly. That gaze. That voice.
I envy Tywin's cool and wit. Any other person would have acted offended and began an argument. Tywin simply answered calmly and dominated the whole room.
tywin as character looks like a person who doesnt bother enganging when a fly barks at him
2:30 I love how Varys is just like "Nah, you're on your own now, kiddo."
2:02 Me everytime Crispy Cole opens his mouth.
Me: 2:25
I do this face every time my boss says something cringe like " guys, we're a family here". Then proceeds to deny his "family's" PTO requests.
Watch out, Ser Crispy beat your Daddy Daemon twice.
@@Papaty25he died like a rat though lol
0:32 Lena's RBF is so powerful that even her smile remains upside down
There’s power, and then there’s power. This is the day Joffrey found out the difference.
"The king is tired...."😂😂😂
2:05 We went from this genius line to
“I don’t want it. I neva av. Sheez muh kween.”
What a downfall.

One of the best scenes in got show the power of tywin character
My very favorite scene in GOT
Tywin sent a powerful message to Joffrey. He showed him how easily he could be killed.
And Joffrey didn't even get the memo on the Nightshade threat, thinking Tywin is just mocking him by forcing him to go to bed.
Look how Tywin did not insult Joffrey and was able to make him do exactly as he said. Otto could take some notes haha.
Tywin took notes from Otto. Otto had to deal with spoiled shitheads who have flying nuclear weapons. Tywin never had to deal with dragons, but I think he’d be more effective if it came to be.
@@thedudeman445exactly, pretty Sure Tywin read Ottos bio at one point and admired him.
Thanks for releasing this video in 480p, HBO. Really giving me those early 2000s vibes.
1:57 I like the little detail of Joffrey swiping away his hand from his mom, even more evidence of her never being able to control him.
2:02 the reason why i love Varys
Love his reaction 😂
i want those guys in same team: varys, tywin, ramsey bolton. maybe arya as well
These scenes were such a fantastic display of acting and writing.
Impeccable acting all around in this scene, but Charles Dance is somehow even a class above. Back when GoT really was something special.
Except everyone else on the table is a phenomenally talented and he cannot do more than one expression or tone
Charles isn't special and when I see someone say "he's the best" It boggles my mind. In GoT you just cannot imagine someone else playing cersei catlyn varys olenna baelish robert because they add something signature to the character and putting charles' mediocre performance above them is an insult
I like how Joffrey first looked at his mother, then at his grandfather to check if they will interfere before he spoke. He really was a child
@@Wasserkaktus It pains me because agreeing with Joffrey is like gargling broken glass. He was a vicious, hateful, evil creature.
Joffrey's actor killed it, the way he starts panting like a vicious chihuahua after he gets owned by Tyrion, the way he's weak but vicious at the same time
1:39 that gasp from Joffrey kills me 😂😂
2:55 my 4 year old at naptime
😂😂
Remains one of the most satisfying scenes in the show. Joffrey may be king, but he's no longer the power in King's Landing.
Also one of the rare cases where Tywin intervenes on Tyrion's behalf. While he seemed somewhat amused by this whole scene, he jumps in as soon as Joffrey threatens his son. No one threatens a Lannister.
2:21
That look...
"If we would be alone, you'd be dead right now, which is why I'm giving you this one opportunity to keep breathing"
Joffrey saw in that look that he was a single syllable away from falling from the keeps windows.
There is some excellent acting in this scene!
Hearing what Tywin said @ 2:07 now makes me think of Aegon’s rant on HotD at the beginning of season 2, episode 2: “I am the King! I AM THE KING!”😆
That pause at 2:20, the poker faces and the music kicking in... makes you wanna rewatch the whole series...
What's that background noise ost?
seen this part so many times but only noticed this now: when the music is kicking in, everyone starts looking towards Tywin in silence... so silent you can hear some pidgeons 😂😂
1:19 Tywin is there thinking "Maybe I should have made Tyrion King, at least he wouldn't start idiotic fights and waste valuable resources over less than nothing."
Even my jaw dropped when Joffrey dissed Tywin 😂
When Tywin glares at Joffrey, you can almost hear a low lions growl. Lol
Otto wishes he could pull that move
It’s not a fair comparison Aegon is a lot of things but he is still a dragon and is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Joffrey on the other hand is scared just to leave the Red Keep.
Aegon has a spine, Joffrey is spineless and yet both appear to be pliable. The only difference is Joffrey is the publicly pliable and malleable in front of others. Aegon is pliable and manipulated discreetly Larys and Cole for example.
Well Aegon is not Joffrey and Otto is not Tywin
Aegon is not nearly as bad as Joffrey lol
@@imperialbengal4068 not even close
Aegon is not a coward and Otto doesn't wealth and army of House Hightower.
Varys's reaction for "I am the king" is priceless.
That look Tywin throws out after Joff squeals "I AM NOT! TIRED!!" is colder & harder than the Wall itself.
Just notice how Tywin with just a few sentences commanded the entire room.
"He took the crown while you hid under Casterly Rock!"
Room temperature drops 15 degrees in 5 seconds.
Such a satisfying scene
Gods, the dialogue was STRONG then...
Charles Dance was such a brilliant casting choice for Tywin, nails the "Try saying that again." look he gives Joffrey
And it is this moment where Joffrey actually realises he's the most powerful man in Westeros in name only
I love how he disses Tywin, and they take the time to show the stunned reaction of every single person present. That was a clear no-no.
whats Crazy is that even though hes wrong... hes technically right
His father is not Robert who took the crown.... his father is Jamie who killed the mad king though
2:16 Joffrey actually believes Robert was his father😂
he must be color blind to not see his hair color
Varys at 2:02 was giving “say it don’t spray it” vibes😭
Charles Dance in this scene is one of my favourites in the entire show, no idea how but he just looks over it and not willing to put up with any BS - really makes you know not to mess with Tywin
One of the best scenes in the whole show!! I bow to the acting and to the dialogue!
2:26 I love Tyrion's face here, he's so pleased with this kind of tension in the room haha
This moment, Joffrey's carelessness becomes completely undeniable.
The actor playing Joffrey was perhaps the greatest of an A class suite of actors
Man that scene was (like many others in the early seasons) golden. Tywin was truly the one holding the cards.
I love Tyrions smile "ohh you done cross the line and even I have a hard time doing that against him" lol
Honestly Joffrey's best moment was here when he told Tywin off. I love it so much.
Everything in this scene is perfect! Well written, acted, executed
Joffrey really admired and loved robert and it shows!!
I miss these type of acting , characters and conversation in hotd
Tywins actor got me to understand what true really good acting looks like same with cersies
Tywin and Tyrion could have been an unstoppable force.
Me binging GoT clips even though I can barely keep my eyes open:
I'm not ... TIRED!
every Tywin scene is a gem
🤣🤣🤣 Varys tried to evade those saliva coming out of that sentence, "I am the King" 😅😂😂😂
To go from this type of brilliant dialogue to Season's 8 is soul-crushing. Peak Game of Thrones was untouchable.
Love how everyone went quiet the second Tywin gave him that look. I bet Tyrion's mind was like "Oooh! You're gonna get it now!"
Cersei face: “have you lost your mind?”
Tyrion face: “oh this is gonna be good.”
Omg that "any man who must say I am the king is no true king." Soooooo goood
2:29 lol everyone knew who the real king was at that moment 😂
Tywins stare is the scariest thing in the whole show 💀
I like how everyone is like “Dude… Too far. Too far…”
Tywin Lannister who every one looks to for approval, that is true power.
Whenever tywin pauses before talking, i always remember his statement in the movie dracula
"Let the games begin." 😅
Tyrion tilting his head at 2:56 gets me everytime 🤣🤣
"killed a few puppies today" 😭🤣🤣🤣
Tyrion: “Killed a few puppies today?”
Jofferey: “In a sense..”
HOT TAKE: Tywin sent Joffrey to bed because he was right.
Not necessarily. While brave and it panned out, Robert’s armies could have very easily been crushed by Rheagar. Tywin would’ve won, easily.
The shock on Jeffrey’s face when Tyrion said that 😂
This is one of my favorite scenes ever
You can see Joffrey visibly recoiled after Tyrion's threat. He feels in his guts that the threat is very real and actually turned back to look to Tywin, as if to check if how he'd react with a threat on his life from Tyrion.
I love Tyrion trying not to laugh at the end
I never really noticed Pycelle quickly snapping up the note at the end. Hilarious.
