Oh so many tips in this video. Firstly it was great to see where you actually pick up pallets and how you select the good ones. I have been guilty of just taking the whole pile, but has definitely been getting more picky lately. Also your methods of breaking down and cleaning them up are world class. I have just recently gotten the Air locker, what a difference! I was great to see how much 19 pallets can actually produce, and I can't wait to see the last magical pallet. Cheers from Denmark 🇩🇰
Once again your optimism & humor restore my soul. I will point out : I leave a couple/three pieces long on each end when I’m gluing up for the snipe that sometimes shows up in my Thicknesser! When the batch are all uniform, then I trim the ends off even.
What I've learnt from this video, 1. My pallet breakdown technique needs some work 2. A "thicknesser" and mitre saw would be handy tools to have 3. I also need to work on my glue technique. Thanks for the vid Mark and thanks for your tip the other day.
A neighbor remodeled their kitchen. I got all the "one time use" pallets. I have made a couple of sofa tables and other items and still have plenty of timber left. Great find.
I have to say I completely agree on working with pallets/crates. It's more challenging. It's also incredibly rewarding to see a project take shape knowing all the while, I made it with what to be garbage. I have a hobby that's rewarding in more than one way.
I'm only 6 minutes in, but I'm glad you got the expert in to explain about the timber. I've wasted countless hours researching pallet trees, to no avail. Now I know why! Given that my nearest Green Shed is a cut lunch and water bag away, I'll have to make do with that old blackbutt and jarrah shit that's been lying round for half a decade. I reckon it'll scrub up OK! Time for another beer, and the rest of the video. Cheers, Mark! Good to see Sumo's keepin' an eye on yer!
The first thing is loving what you do, no matter what it is enjoy it. I watch your video`s and see the joy you get out of woodworking with pallet's and that is what it is all about. Cheers Mark.😀
Just for people in the UK (I am not sure anywhere else) but the blue pallets are Chep Pallets. They are a special company that insures the pallet so if items on that pallet breaks because of that pallet they will pay out for it. The wood on them are amazing BUT they are owned so you have to check before grabbing that you can take it.
In some places, it is illegal to sell, throw away, ship to other companies or even have in your possession without the bill showing you bought these pallets. If Chep are told, they can send someone over and then send you a bill for it if it is true.
I made a pallet buster like you have with flat bar and a pipe at the rear to rotate on, I found the easiest way is remove outer edge of boards first then move into the middle and remove the middle. The boards lift if the middle is off first but the middle you have both sides of your pallet buster to lift it off and it's even pressure.
Regardless of what you're making, I love that you're making good use of these pallets which would rot otherwise - we should all be trying to recycle like this.
Yeah nah yeah! I learned this myself when I priced my first commission that you need to put a figure on your own time, and you've just shown that. Pallet wood free, but at the cost of time, however it's time doing something you enjoy so sort of balances itself out! Love your work!
Idk if you’ll see this but i’m a 17 year old kid from this little island in the caribbean called Trinidad, my dad used to work as a delivery guy at DHL Express and he collected a heap of pallets throughout his 18 years of service and boy oh boy did you just gave me every ounce of hope to make some cash while simultaneously learning the art of woodworking, i’ve been watching you for 2 months now and i am insanely inspired by what you do mark, love from Emilio from Trinidad❤🫡
I got those clamps after seeing Ben's video and use them every day now. I've even drilled a glory hole in the middle of my bench so I can hold things down from both sides with them! Great video.
I look just casually at your pallet selection and I noticed what great condition they're in. It's important to start with the best product possible, even when the product is "free", when you're going to end up spending/investing soooooo much additional time into preparation. I live within a few hours of many small lumber yards that produce lots of different types of lumber for various purposes. Sometimes it's easier to get supplies from those guys, than it is to find 25 "perfect" (or at least mostly usable.) pallets.
I've started getting picky on pallets as well, although I work in a business district that many places leave their pallets by the road. It's easy to drive through the area every couple days and grab 2-4 pallets at a time.
I work at a paper company so I have access to lots of pallets, which I’ve used for years to make stuff. I get to high grade them and use the work truck to take them home. Recently I was picking up pallets from the pallet mill itself because we sell them retail to customers. Anyway I saw a large pile of wood and it looked like scrap. I asked the guy loading me and he said I could have all I want, they just grind them and sell the chips for fuel. So now I get my wood without having to break down pallets. That’s my tip. Find a pallet mill and see if they will allow you to take scraps. Good stuff man. You definitely make the most of those pallets. Cheers!
Fantastic, can't wait to see what they become (and what's under the blanket...). I'm glad to see you chopped off your spatula. I tried the spatula thing but quickly switched to dough scrapers because they're not rounded. Thanks for brightening my morning, Mark! Now I'm off to order those quick clamps...
I take them all. The good wood gets saved for projects the culls are used to keep my family warm. About 15 percent of the nails can be reused. The rest recycled.

Well just fyi, I use a reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade and get between the boards and cut the boards , makes taking apart pallets almost effortless, now the nails do stay in the wood but you can disassemble one in like 5 mins if not quicker.
These offcuts you send to the green waste bin, could be cut up and bag up to sell as kindling. Great way to make a bit of extra coin to buy tools , glue or whatever you need

I've never found the value i using old pallet for woodworking. I tired it at one point when the place I worked at had small pallets made of red oak but generally the wood used for pallets are in poor condition, they're in short lengths, they're not very wide, they're often thinner than the standard 3/4" thickness (which makes planing them down difficult) and worst of all they have a high percentage chance of having nails or other things in them that makes them difficult to plane down.
This was an awesome video, but I have some questions. I know that since I'm in America there won't be a 1 to 1 comparison, but how do you pick your pallets to make sure you're getting the best wood and hard wood?
@@dainermade What do you end up using the pine for usually?
Mate...bloody brilliant! Enough said....BOOM!! 👍👍🇦🇺😁
Good on ya Mark! Love the laughs! 😂😂 bloody good tips and insight to the real cost of doing recycling of your pallets. Looks like a good little app.

Hey where can I buy your mallets? My husband is a huge fan of your channel and I would love to buy him one for Christmas. Thanks Georga 😊
I got pretty excited when I saw the can of spray paint, I was hoping for gold! The only gold here is the content Mark uploads! 😆
@@dainermade I’ll be getting back into it properly soon, just need to buy an actual camera and not use my iPhone 😆

Great channel mate. Started watching your newer stuff then clicked on some of your older stuff and thought wtf whos this guy 😂🤣😂🤣
Important question Mark. Do you prefer the Masterfoods or the Fountain sauce bottles for your glue ups??
I've been saying for years. 'Australian' is a different language! And when you have a famous guest star, it proves my point. Your guest today did not speak the same 'dialect' of Australian that you do.
I love the jmpscare at 0:15 lol
Yeah, nah, great video! It's always a good feeling when you keep timber out of landfill. Do you know there are countries that are like "Landfill? WTF?". Yeah, nah, I reckon putting good timber into landfill is unStrayan.
Awesome Mark, May I ask have you ever stepped on a Nail and what preventative steps did you take to avoid the recurrence in the Future, Asking for a friend :)
Just 4 days ago I got 24 pallets too. ... I'm still in the denail process
