You're the opposite of hand tool rescue. Love the short format. I was expecting a regular length video and the shortness hit me. In and out like a ninja. Keep doing what your doing.
That was entertaining! I want to do that for my kids. The chemistry is pretty simple though. Salt being the electrolyte facilitates the faster exchange of ions. In the presence of two acids, H2O2 and CH3COOH, Iron oxidizes. Plus you have to consider that vinegar is 95% water, so more oxygen ions there for the iron to oxidize. That was awesome!
I really liked your video..no 5 min introduction and no 5 min watching paint dry... you just went straight to the point and no freaking measurements down to a grain of salt!... my kind of videos.
I use a similar mixture, but I've found that first heating up the steel a little bit with a propane torch makes it kick even faster. I like these quick, informative videos!
Nice! If you apply this process, and then heat the metal without exposure to oxygen (like in a hot water bath), you get a black oxide (magnetite) coating, AKA "bluing". You should do a video on that finish as well!
Being a former fellow Rust Belt victim? I feel your pain. All I can say is, car washes... Lots of car washes to get the salt back off. I learned the importance of undercarriage washes especially after blowing two brake lines when I needed them to stay un-blown up. And keep some rags in your car to dry your door seals afterwards if you do. Nothing as anticlimactic as getting the salt off, only to deal with doors that froze shut later.
Huh I had no idea, my favorite part about this is a year or 2 from now I’m going to be making a project that I want to look rusty and then remember “ Hey Picciuto did a video on that” and then I’ll watch again for the reference. Thanks for the tip man 👍🏻
Man, I wish this video came out about a month ago. I needed to do this for a project and just used vinegar and did not get the effect that I was looking for. this is exactly what I needed. Now I know for future projects. And it's weird seeing you in a black shirt. Kinda like it.
Do you also know how to make rust disappear instantly? That's what I need, lol. Clear coat won't stick well to rust and will eventually, depending on humidity, peel off because the rusting process continues underneath. Use something that seals up the rust, like Owatrol oil, it has the same effect as rust converter but keeps the red-brownish color as it doesn't react with the rust, it just clogs up all it's pores.
So, if I'm not mistaken, you can then convert the outer oxidized layer into black rust to keep non-stainless steel from rusting with exposure. By... boiling it, I believe? I'm trying to rust-proof some machine parts.
I watch all your vids in my UA-cam subscription feed. If it weren’t for instagram, I would have missed this vid. The make something logo is usually how identify your vids, and the red of the logo got lost with the red of the rust. That being said, thanks for the vid. Very informative.
you could rinse off excess salt so it doesn't eat it away in 20 years, but peroxide is pretty delute and vinegar is mostly water. You could gargle with this, but it would be nasty. might be a good way to kill a canker sore.
Hi , I'm doing quite similar, but I took hydrochloric acid (about 25%) and put a bunch of copper into it. After about 2 weeks I took the copper out and mix ca. 100ml with 3-4 l water. It starts to rust not so fast as yours but the copper will stop the rusting after some time and you don't have to finish with clear paint.
Neat! Looks great, and I’m really glad to know this. I wonder if using a spray bottle would eliminate the drips/runs if you wanted it more even? Obviously that’s dependent on the project, but just a thought. Also, I heard you like being asked “but why?” 😝
Liked this video! I wonder, anyway of getting that into a marker so you can make nice rusty details in metal pieces? If i try to put this in a marker it just overflows, any idea what could make it a bit more dense for an empty pump marker? Appreciate it!
I’m trying to rust an ax head, but it just turns black!! What’s up with that I’ve used your recipe at least a dozen times and it’s always worked great. I just don’t understand what it is that makes it turn black instead of rusting. Same manufacturer on the hammer, screw driver and sockets I’ve rapidly rusted.
hi what do you use to seal the steel after rusting ? I have a steel bench I want to rust but then seal as I don't want my clothes to get covered in rust
I watched the video of using the rusting technique for the guitar sign. Have you come up with a way to rust the metal and protect it without causing it to darken or make it look wet? I need to make a smallish dining table in a beach / ocean themed setting. I've thought about cypress stumps, etc, but also using heavy anchor chain welded together organically so it looks like it draping down and piping up on the floor. I think I'd like to make it look rusted without the rust coming off on clothing, but don't want to make it look wet.
just using white vinegar will remove rust but you have to let it soak for a bit. i have used it to clean old bike parts and work decently well. its also a good all around cleaner. i have never tried mixing it with hydrogen peroxide though.
do not do this to something that needs its integrity to be safe. This is a cosmetic thing. Photo frames and Iron work decorations. If you have something that needs to be strong and last, do not make it rust intentionally.
Well that was to the point. I will definitely use this as a reference video when I want to rust something. I sealed some metal last year with Penetrol by Flood. I can't remember for sure, but it is supposed protect but allow oxidation to continue slowly, or something like that. It was easy to use and I was happy with it. Thanks for the video :)
Hi...i wonder if you add washing up liquid to that solution and heat up the liquid a little bit and bubble it up.in.a wide container and lsy the steel on your might get a bubble effect rust pattern like we used to do with paint and bubbles in school? Would be awesome that mind
Probably a stupid question but would this ruin the strength in the steel? I’m interested in trying to do this on my bmx bike frame because I like the look and have seen nobody do it maybe there’s a reason for that😅
You're the opposite of hand tool rescue. Love the short format. I was expecting a regular length video and the shortness hit me. In and out like a ninja. Keep doing what your doing.
Jesus bless you .
Repent
yep, this video was exactly what I was hoping to see as well. Nice one!
BRILLIANT!! I am recreating a "junk yard" for a Cats Musical set. I obviously needed "old" stuff. Thanks!!!
Thank you for making this video quick! no nonsense, straight to the point what the title of the video implies, proper two minutes. good job!

In the presence of two acids, H2O2 and CH3COOH, Iron oxidizes. Plus you have to consider that vinegar is 95% water, so more oxygen ions there for the iron to oxidize. That was awesome!
Would it have worked without the vinegar? What is the need for two acids?
I really liked your video..no 5 min introduction and no 5 min watching paint dry... you just went straight to the point and no freaking measurements down to a grain of salt!... my kind of videos.
I use a similar mixture, but I've found that first heating up the steel a little bit with a propane torch makes it kick even faster. I like these quick, informative videos!
This is perfect for someone who needs a quick restoration video idea. Just slap a little orange rust on it and, BAMB. You got a video!
You are the first guy to make that beard/soulpatch combo work. Lookin' good.
Dude a 2 min video about making something rust fast is so meta! Nice.
My God I wish more people got straight to the point. Thank you
Nice! If you apply this process, and then heat the metal without exposure to oxygen (like in a hot water bath), you get a black oxide (magnetite) coating, AKA "bluing". You should do a video on that finish as well!
Now if you can remove rust instantly my truck can be the test subject. Ohio winters... you feel me.
👊

“It’s going to rust like a 79 F150 in January in Ohio”
@@russellborrego Proper undercarriage maintenance is a must. Wait, what are we talking about here?
@@robb1267, interchangeable ideals really. Similar means of getting there as well. 👍👍
Good job! Thanks for keeping it quick and simple.
I like the shorter format. I hope that you make more of these, especially if it helps you carve out more time to make a few epic builds.
Beautiful’ fast and easy and straight to the subject!
As it should be !!
A lot of bogus, things that are fake on UA-cam, BUT this works! Just like he said. I rusted my rat rod bumpers. Thank You!
Thank you David! Quick and informative! I want to rust my welding bed and either preserve it with boiled linseed oil or a wipe on clear coat.
Great - just about to try this and all the other sites were going on about proportions etc - this is just straight in there!
Brilliant ! Love the quick format too
The black shirt is breaking my brain!!!! Cool video. Thanks!
Huh I had no idea, my favorite part about this is a year or 2 from now I’m going to be making a project that I want to look rusty and then remember “ Hey Picciuto did a video on that” and then I’ll watch again for the reference. Thanks for the tip man 👍🏻
Love the short but informative videos!! Thanks for the tips!
Best video ever. Love straight to the point. Liked and subbed.
Fantastic tips here. I actually want to use this soon. Got a project in the works for some table legs with this aesthetic.
This was very informative and the only video i could really find to get the ingredients, thank you!
Have you ever used Penetrol as a protectant and sealer?
David great little tips and tricks video really good Idea keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend keep making
Pretty interesting, Dave!!! Thanks for the tip! 😃
Stay safe there! 🖖😊
Thanks for the quick explanation
WOW!!! It works! Scarry!!! I am using it to rust an old file. It won't cut like new, but it will cut much better than now.
David’s version of a “Bits” video. 😉 We better be seeing that frame in another video. 😁
Love the short and fast instructions
Keep it up man 👍🏻
I poured this on my bullies bike , and now he does not wanna mess with me , thanks bro 👍🏻
Reminds me of Corten steel and Richard Serra sculptures!

Nice! I'd like your take on acid etching too!
Thank you! What should I use to seal it for my succulent planters that are unplanted ? Thanks!

Right on, thanks!!
Evporust makes it disappear... Releasing a video on it today... 🤣
POR-15.
For how long will a clear coat be good enough if the material is outside approximately 5 months a year? Months or years?
Won't rust form a protective layer to the metal underneath
How to apply a protective layer. What chemicals do i have to use. Can you recommend a video for protective layer tutorial.
Bonus video! Nice tip.
😜
So, if I'm not mistaken, you can then convert the outer oxidized layer into black rust to keep non-stainless steel from rusting with exposure. By... boiling it, I believe?
I'm trying to rust-proof some machine parts.
Is it a regular 3% hydrogen peroxide or stronger stuff?
Is this an attempt to show Katz-Moses how to do a 2min Tuesday? That is a cool trick. I never realized you could just make stuff rust like that.
To make something rusty I only have to say 'I want a clean piece of steel'. When I go get some it will of course be flaking with rust
Job done 😉

what about putting it into a spray bottle to get a more even layer?
Well that is incredibly cool! Gonna have to give this one a try for sure!
Hi there ..will this work on aluminium too. Also do you need to coat it in anything to protect it ? Thanks
Looks great! Just remember to ground the bridge next time.
thank you. I'm signed up to watch your videos !
Actually very useful information…..if you are going to weld in new metal and want it to blend with very old patina
Hello , thank you for the helpful video , can you specify what the solution percentage of the H²O² you were using in the video ?
Can I mix dislictic water and salt 🧂 only for this purpose Sir
Put this concoction into a bingo dabber and go around town catching tags on all the metal objects I can find! 🤠
Does this make surface rust only, or does it go deep?
Soap wash then throw in some steel wool into that mixture, and you can use it to give wood a very deep rusty stain. It's awesome, I've used it before.
Very cool video and technique, thank you
Do you need to neutralize the reaction or does that happen when it dries?
you could rinse off excess salt so it doesn't eat it away in 20 years, but peroxide is pretty delute and vinegar is mostly water. You could gargle with this, but it would be nasty. might be a good way to kill a canker sore.

bingo bango, just like that! gotta love it.
Next time someone incurs my wrath, guess what’s happening to their sawblades?
Luckily not their car's brake rotors
Careful, KARMA can be bitch and it never misses.
That’s funny manifesting a working…😅
I like that shirt!
Will car battery acid work as well?
This works great.
Thanks for the tip!
Great to hear!
Short n sweet! Cool gotta try it
Cooking with Picciuto!
Mmmmm.
I don't think "cooking" means what you think it means.
Huh..... Cool info, thx 👍👍

thx for knowledge bro 🎉
Does this will work on titanium metal?

@@niq872 Hmmm... interesting.
Can any method rust galvanised iron.
Will this weaken the metal overtime or will it not penetrate the metal that much?
do not do this to something that needs its integrity to be safe. This is a cosmetic thing. Photo frames and Iron work decorations. If you have something that needs to be strong and last, do not make it rust intentionally.
Would this work if the steel was painted black first? Basically adding the rust mix on top of a paint layer.
Hey man cool video wath hydrogene peroxide do you use it’s random were to find…..

Wow that was quick
Will white wine vinegar work in the mix also instead of the all purpose vinegar?
Hi...i wonder if you add washing up liquid to that solution and heat up the liquid a little bit and bubble it up.in.a wide container and lsy the steel on your might get a bubble effect rust pattern like we used to do with paint and bubbles in school? Would be awesome that mind
I think salt hinders bubbles, doesn't it?
Probably a stupid question but would this ruin the strength in the steel? I’m interested in trying to do this on my bmx bike frame because I like the look and have seen nobody do it maybe there’s a reason for that😅
Would this work on 440 Stainless Steel?
Can this be stored and sealed in a container with all 3 materials added?
Forget the salt and peroxide. Bleach and vinegar works better.
What would you use to finish the rust and keep it from going away
Nice work
What if its zinc coated? Do you need to hit it with a wire wheel first or just add solution?
How much does that cover? I need to cover 215 linear feet of a steel fence both sides.
Great vid. Short and to the point. thumbs up and sub. Thanks
Is it actually rust or does it just look like rust? Not that it really matters for what I need the rust look for. XD just curious.
I have a metal top that is uneven, could I use this and sanding to sand it down smooth?
I wouldn't use this solution, sanding might work but hard to get it flat with a small sander.
So can this punch tiny holes in regular old zinc metal roof sheets?
Does this work on a window unit air conditioner?
I want mine to look old on purpose.
I would like..because I'm crazy..to rust out my motorcycle a bit. But the parts are chromed. Any suggestions ?
Cool tip. But really, that black shirt w/ the white logo looks awesome. Makes me feel like a chump for having the red one.
