Plastic engineer here. Your comment about bottles v caps has to do with the viscosity. Anything that has been injection molded into thin parts, like the caps, will likely have a similar low viscosity material. Blow molding produced bottles (like the soap bottle) will be in the middle and thick wall sheets or pipes will have very high viscosities. It has to do with the intended processes for the material in the first place. This is why mechanical recycling is so difficult!

Yes you need the plastifier to be known, it's why recycled plastic is never as good. It's why the real way to recycle plastic is to get it fully dissolved to its original components.

3:40 the heatgun tip is great. Another seemingly obvious tip but it took me a while to appreciate: The best adhesive or solvent to remove the adhesive is itself. So, when you have a mostly intact label coming off with adhesive backing but a bit of paper and adhesive left behind - often the best thing is to take that just removed label and tack it to the dregs remaining and then pull. Often I find the angle (shear vs tug) and some repetition helps. I don't think this works for everything but it's so simple and so much better than having to soak or try and find the right solvent to match - you already have the exact match on that waste label.
    Thanks for the video!

I have an obsession with storing used palstics and bottles. I wash them as i wash my plates and store them in an empty room even when i dont know what to do with it yet. But what surprises me is the amount i accumulate its so much it fills the whole room and i cant even see space to move about. I usually do an overhaul since where i stay recycling bins are not readily available. Wat a shame😢 its a merry go round for me but i cant just stop cos just like the brothers make i have a little bit lot of love for this inanimate things 😅 except i cant just go fully into plastic recycling apart from the ones i can do within closed doors because of the nature of my environment . Hi, some questions if I may: do you use detergents when washing plastics in the washing machine? Do you chop up bottles to make it easier to clean? What are you doing to minimise your energy usage? Home power generation? Solar heating? Have you thought of a candy folding type machine or something of that nature to fold out the air bubbles? Similar question about a machine that applies and increases pressure over time? Does static build up in the plastics making it difficult to manage shavings?

Greetings from Precious Plastic Turkey. Thank you for a great educational video. There are valuable tips for recyling plastic.
We need to find a cheap solution for stubborn label residues. WD40 + Aceton is not a cheapset solution to get rid off these residues.
I have been collecting empty plastic engine oil cans from several car services in the area where I live for a few months. I use big mesh bags and pre cut plastics into small pieces before washing. I use a a washing program with 80 Celcius at least 1.5 hr .However i am happy with the results.
I know that industry uses caustic soda (drain cleaner chemical ) for plastic cleaning. But this might not be the ideal solution to breathe toxic dangerous fumes while caustic soda react with residues.
We all know that HDPE bottles are made with blowmolding method.and also HDPE bottle caps are made with injection method. That is where the mfi or grades changes as you mentioned. I use 30cmx40cm Heat press and i can mix any grade of hdpe without issue. However precious plastic injection machine might not handle only blowmolding grade HDPE.
Also i would like to mention that there is similar issue in PP (5) Plastic chairs may contain calcite for extra durability to the material. However that effects the purity and the grade of the PP (5).
I love your works from the begining. Keep inspiring the commuity. ✌

I don't know if I was the one mentioning the heatgun trick (I've used it for over 12 years), but there's a few more methods:
1: Since you're removing stickers from a bottle (or jar), you can fill the bottle with hot water; this can be poured into the next bottle, etc. after you've removed the sticker.
2: If the sticker still sticks (some glue types do not 'melt' completely when heated), then use sticky tape to remove the remaining glue.
3: If that doesn't work; try using water and salt.
4: If you're still out of luck, try dish-washing soap.
5: If still out of luck, you've spent too much time on this already, but you could - as a last resort, try the washing machine. 😉

    • @em5114

I’ve never heard the sticky tape trick before, I’ll definitely be giving that a go!

    • @68HC060
      @68HC060 Місяць тому +2

@@em5114 - There are several types of sticky tape; some have good glue, others have terrible glue.
Most of the time, put tape over the glue you wish to remove, then push firmly, to make it stick well; then pull it off slowly (don't use a lot of force pulling off).
Sometimes the glue won't easily remove; and sometimes you'll need to change tactics, putting the tape back over the glue several times and sometimes quickly and forcefully pulling the tape off instead of slowly.
Tape can also be useful for removing dust, where (or when) you can't vacuum-clean.
Scotch tape is not very good for removing glue; painter's tape would be better, but transparent packing tape might be a real good choice; it's usually strong and usually has a good glue.

Great upload. I am making my products of recycled material (literally i empty landfil skips) for 17+ years. I am winding down, my customers are unhappy. 10 years ago I made my own recycled plastic, nr1, PET. I can/will write a book, the journey I had to make, as the whole recycle industry was against my effort, event governmental inspectors were provided and were boycotted and had to retract providing assistance. Your plastic is much, much easier but didn't do the job for me. I still have about 5 mile in my garden to process it, but time is my enemy. Because success could eat into my current provitable business, i postponed it. I just ironed several protos from milkbottles and grocery bags, showing the old logos and make the recycling visual asi a selling point. The plastic world is pure politics, but excellent for a cottage industry. Biggest question, how much of the coming generation would like to do what you and I are doing. I made, but could 25 fold, my business very successful, but very doubtful, as you rightfully said in the end, the material is only a small part of making money. It is the uniqueness and the smile of a satisfied customer, made us doing it, even family members didn't grasp, but we never showed off, as society today, doesn't understand as how to make money in a honest way. Your upload is good, i hope more people will pick this up! Thanks.

That's pretty much the opposite of what you want. Taffy pulling works by aerating the soft candy until it increases in size and takes on the translucent color. Not only does this introduce a ton of air into the candy, but it also begins to cool much faster.

    Very valuable video!
I studied the matter about different additives added to the various kinds of HDPE and I also discovered that some bottle caps aren't injected but rather compression molded on a very fast machine (you can distinguish them because they lack the tiny injection point on the top), and so the melting index is lower, similar to the blow molded one.
I also started collecting everything I could find, and I regretted it.
Even if I can inject the thicker kind of HDPE and PP with my hydraulic injection machine, the cleaning process involved in bottles is wasting a lot of time.
I keep just the brighter/"rare" colors and throw the rest.
Also some people carried very dirty plastic and since I'm working on the project in my spare time it happened that I had bags of stinky plastic...

Just a tip: In stead of the wood boards you are using in your press, find some thick aluminum sheets. They will disperse the heat from the plastic molds much quicker ;-)

Hey, I was wondering, do you convert your recycled plastic into pellets? If you did, you could expand into many more ways of using your plastics. Last night, I watched a guy make a life-sized "benchy" the boat which used recycled plastic pellets. He had a huge 3d printer which used the pellets to do it.

I haven't tried it, but many kinds of plastic can be dissolved into acetone, removing the need for heating and all that kneading and stuff. You can also store it in its dissolved form with a closed container.

Thanks for the tips, I do 3d printing and I was wanting to do something with misprints and supports that would have otherwise gone to waste. I do have a question though, I was gonna try to make silicone molds of thing's I print regularly for my etsy store to use my waste to make some of my products and I noticed you guys use metal molds, so my question is; are metal molds necessary for this sort of thing or are they just easier to work with?

Just the tips on removing labels is itself a huge timesaver for me… though I’m not really saving much plastic at the moment now. I was mostly just trying to reuse the bottles, but they don’t fit a grid.
If it were possible to take a circular plastic bottle and reshape it into a smaller hexagonal or rectangular bottle, that would be fairly useful. I would imagine that heating and remolding would be possible, but tricky. If the reshaped container could be stacked, that would definitely beat the 3D printed “gridfinity”

By the time you add fuel to get plastic and the electricity to melt the plastic, the carbon footprint of small scale recycling is probably higher than disposal or commercial recycling.

If many recycling companies didn't toss the majority of their received recyclables into the landfill, it might indeed be easier on the environment to trust the big guys to do it large scale.
Unfortunately that's not the case, and until that changes, everyone who helps keep things out of the landfills should be lauded and appreciated. 😊
There's still so much to be recycled; care to join a movement?

    • @syntecsmurf
      @syntecsmurf Місяць тому +2

@@Whimspiration Does not negate the fact that the carbon footprint for what these guys are doing is higher than throwing it away, You might as well burn the plastic because fossil fuel is being wasted to power the melting of the plastics.

Hi guys, I found your video by chance. I’m well impressed. ❤ I’m a crafter and try and use as much recycled stuff as possible. Although I’ve never tried to melt plastic. I’ll have to give it a go. Is there any other ways to melt it other than a panini maker? I have an air fryer and oven. As for moulds could you use silicon or do they have to be metal? Thank you. Regard Tracey.

Although your intensions seem worthy. The entire process is not very environment friendly, right? You use your petrol car to collect from too many locations, with extremely limited colors, you suggest using very volatile chemicals just to remove a thin label, when often a soak in boiling water is enough. All those chemicals are both expensive and evaporate too quickly.
You use an uneven waffle press to flatten a result that only has the quality of used gum!
Even using a wash cycle to clean tops is more expensive than leaving them to boil or soak in Clorine overnight.
Here in Sweden, there is no sorting done at all, yet who wants Pink/grey glass frames anyway.
No, they offer a container on the street with a compartment for plastic but not thin plastic bags, they go into "Burnt".
Yet they do not tell you that the two types are dealt with in the same way, i.e. burnt.
You are using a lot of energy through the whole process and that did not look to motivating.
Then there is all the extra equipment made and at a cost too. It would take far too many glas frames to win back that kind of money.
In the end, the results looked terrible right. uneven, scraped, crudely trimmed etc.
I think you should stick to using a 3D print that offers a cheap, no waste result. Household plastics should be ground to a fine
texture and be mixed into road Tarmac or Asphalt as it helps against frost and is a good insolent. I believe they use polystyrene
in America for this and it works well. It is also a product without it´s own container at tips, so again is burnt.
I also think that there could be a system for charging cars while they are on the roads. You would skip having to worry about
that issue too. Your car would be scanned and even the streetlights might light up for you too?
It would know were your going too. They have those tiny wind turbines that sit on top of street lights to charge the lights
do they not, any excess charge you make can be stored as a back to nature cost and pay for more trees or be stored?
What do you think? Naturally would only work for major roads to start with.
