Grow Me Something Mister! shares tips on what to look for when harvesting cabbage. Look for tight outer leaves and even split ones. The head is ready to harvest.
Thanks. I've got cabbage in my garden for the first time and I had NO idea when to harvest or what to watch for. I appreciate you getting straight to the point.
Savoy is a little different from stonehead cabbage and the like. You'll look for similar conditions to harvest but savoy may have a little more spring to it. good luck!
I've not done it, but I've read online research that says if you take a spade shovel and stab down into the soil a few inches, next to the cabbage, taking out about 25% of the roots or so, it will keep the cabbage alive and help prevent it from splitting for a bit. Again, no experience, but some swear by it. Here's an article after a quick search (in the Q&A): extension.illinois.edu/veggies/cabbage.cfm Me? I just take the cabbage when firm, pull the leaves off and store in crisper until I'm ready to eat it. It'll last up to 2 months in the crisper! Cabbage is awesome! Brent
That is a beautiful head of cabbage! I hope you enjoy that baby! C3 Voyage mentioned below that you can cut into the soil to keep the head from spitting. I've also heard of turning the head 1/4 so that it breaks some of the roots and keeps the head from continuing to grow too fast. I suppose you would do that if you have a lot of cabbages getting ready at the same time. I wish I had that problem...sigh. Happy New Year, buddy! May all your garden dreams come true in 2017!
The timing worked out perfectly with this head because we will eat it on New Year's day. It is good to know about the root situation, because I dont want a lot coming up at one time. Happy New Year to you and your family as well.
Interesting question. It's been said by others that cabbage can grow larger if the roots were chopped a little. Hard to say if they will survive the transplant or not, not knowing your growing conditions. Depending on how crowded your garden is, it may be worth transplanting a few so that you get good sized cabbages. I like using fish emulsion to help greening and growth- it may also heal the plant.
I plant some cabbage seeds from the 5 of October only two of them started to fold and the rest of them is bush can you say why am from Jamaica it is just a small back yard garden
I can't be certain due to several variables. The cabbages and other brassicas don't exactly form heads or sprout at the same time. I've had cabbage form a month after other cabbages.
I grow in zone 9a louisiana in the fall, so the caterpillars aren't too much of an issue because of the cooling weather. with proper techniques to prepare the soil and additional compost and organic fertilizer, the plants will be able to withstand the insects and other things in the early stages. i made a 10 point growing guide, which is worth watching. thanks for watching and the question.
No ma'am. Our traditional new year's day meal: black eye peas, corned beef, white rice and smothered down cabbage. So awesome to have homegrown cabbage to start the new year. Thanks for the commentary.
That's a good point, and I thought about it afterward. Depending on the size you can use a pair of shears to trim them a couple inches below the head of cabbage. I started to use a machete the last few years because the stalks were thicker than the shears can open. A kitchen knife will also do the job.
Generally nothing, since it grows in fall/winter. I have some sort of neem oil insecticide in case I need it. A new head doesn't grow that you can harvest, but I have seen a couple brussel sprout sized cabbages form if I leave the stalk.
Did you pick it when you noticed that it split or is it still there? Personally I would not trust it for fear of bugs and/or other contaminants making its way inside. I would harvest and give to chickens or compost pile. I do not have reason to believe that it isn't edible tho. Better safe than sorry.
@@growmesomethingmister4930 No, I didn't pick it. It happened 2 days ago. Before that there was no split. It's my first time growing a cabbage. It's planted in a pot up on my balcony.
Ya me too. Maybe not enough beneficial insects. All of my brassicas were destroyed by moths and worms including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and sprouts even some of the kale. Never had an issue like that until last season.

Thanks for the visit. I hope your harvest will be a good one.
@@growmesomethingmister4930 I just finished eating some with dinner. The cabbage grew great and was very good, we even made some kimchi from it.
Straight to the point love it!
Thanks for the video. I’m growing Savoy cabbage for the first time this year. So a very helpful video, thank you 👍

@@growmesomethingmister4930 thanks very much for the info and help 👍
Great info, I did not know that! This time it looks like I might get one cabbage so great info to know . Thank you 😊
Glad I could help.

Happy New Year Bob. Best wishes in this new year.
Supper Cabbage. Happy New Year. Best regards Patrick
Happy New Year Patrick, thanks for visiting.
That thing is huge and beautiful!! Gorgeous cabbage!! Happy 2017!
Happy new year to you and the homestead. Thanks for the visit.
Great tips
Thanks. This is my first time growing cabbage. I can't wait.
Good luck, how far along is the plant? What grow zone? Generally they like cooler weather so keep an eye out for a quick bolt if/when it forms a head.
@@growmesomethingmister4930 not sure I live in Indiana and planted in May 16th
Helpful. Thank you
Nice! That's what I do as well. Pick when head is formed and very firm. I'm jealous 'cause I don't have one!

Howdy, and thanks for the visit. I learned last season that waiting too long is a bad thing for cabbages.

Harvested two cabbages for my new year's dinner :) I have started freezing cabbage as well now
Do you cook it first or freeze it raw?
I cut it into thick strips, blanch for 1 minute then fast freeze on a tray before bagging it up

Thank you.
Thanks for the info never know that. Have a great day rocster says where is his dog tree????? He need to visit it LOL
:D No dog trees in my yard. Rocster can visit the neighbor or something. hehhe
Nice head! That's gonna be some goods eating
Yes ma'am! I got it at its peak I think. Too bad there's only one. Thanks for visiting.
😊My cabbage is ready to be harvested
Your gabbage looks like mine lol
Richard Williams Which ones? The one I harvested was a really nice head, 8 pounds if I recall. Thanks for watching.

Also when you cut the head off will the plant grow another head of cabbage.
Can you transplant crowded cabbage that's 70% done growing? Or is it too vulnerable? I overcrowded my garden bed.

But how do you keep the green caterpillars away? BT only works for a couple of days for me

It would have been nice if you had showed HOW to harvest these buggers. Is there a special tool you use?

@@growmesomethingmister4930 I used an old, large kitchen knife. Worked just fine. Thanks for your answer.
What do you put on your cabbage for insects.
Generally nothing, since it grows in fall/winter. I have some sort of neem oil insecticide in case I need it. A new head doesn't grow that you can harvest, but I have seen a couple brussel sprout sized cabbages form if I leave the stalk.
Mine just split like 2 days ago. Is it still ok to eat?

When can you cook cabbage after harvesting?
As soon as you want to. You have maybe up to a week after harvest.
How long cabbage takes to grow?
The harvest is this video was after three months. Generally 3-4 months if using starter plants.
I always get so many worms when I grow brassicas organically 😑
That's curious, I wonder why?
Ya me too. Maybe not enough beneficial insects. All of my brassicas were destroyed by moths and worms including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and sprouts even some of the kale. Never had an issue like that until last season.
@@portugeeprepper6821 they only go after my green cabage not the purple as much the broccoli is fine
I use BT on mine. It's organic and works wonders!
am I first?
