I really enjoyed learning how you harvest your cabbage and great meal at the end

  • @lmjpilgrim2

A cabbage will split when it takes up too much water, too fast. The water floods the tissues and has nowhere to go, so the cabbage splits down the middle.
I learned this the day before a rainstorm. The morning of the rainstorm, I passed the very first cabbage I ever grew, a Bonnie 50 lb. cabbage. By the time I got home, that cabbage had split from taking in so much water from the rainstorm.
As long as you harvest it fairly soon after it splits, it's perfectly edible.
    Hope this helps!
LOVING, LOVING, LOVING the recipes and garden videos!
God Bless you and Nancy for sharing your gifts and bounty with us.
    Hugs!

Cabbages are so appealing because they are round, chubby and cute, especially in the ground. I love the sound the leaves make when you harvest the chosen cabbage - and it's fun! I believe broccoli leaves are more delicious than the florets. What a simple yet delicious comfort meal you made for a cozy, rainy day (I'm a pluviophile)! My name is also Nancy and I wish I could be a guest at your homestead. Hi from Toronto, Canada (and Taiwan)! 😋

P.S. Make cabbage rolls with the leaves you left behind, LOL!! I have a neighbor who would kill for all those outter leaves. Steam 'em down, then, stuff them with a rice and seasoned ground beef mixture. Roll 'em like a cigar, lay them in a saucepan, cover them with a tomato sauce and simmer until the stuffing is fully cooked.
    Call me when they're ready!!!

thanks for sharing... need to go check my cabbage... being diebetic we have to watch salt intake and red meat also. Our version of sausage and cabbage is.. turkey sausage or kibasha with cabbage .. no salt but 1 heaping tablespoon of lite or stevia brown sugar and ground black pepper. Pretty good. I do all our cooking since retiring and wife still working. In 7 years I have become a pretty good cook. that sure looked good brewing in that big pot.

If you'd like to try a real easy Cabbage recipe here is one...Slice your Cabbage into 3/4" to 1" thick round steaks place on a cookie sheet drizzle with bacon grease salt and black pepper cover with foil and bake at 350 for 20 minutes and it is ready. For the more adventurous add some red pepper and herbs and once its done remove the foil and add grated cheese cook 5 more minutes and eat!

Thank you. I had to move my new winter garden to new area because it wasn't getting enough sun. My brussel sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli plants are mixed up. I assume / see my cabbage plants, but they did not form a head. Also my broccoli and brussel sprouts didn't form. They are so pretty and solid looking otherwise. Has this happened to yall before. Happy Thanksgiving!! Also, did you know that the word Good-bye is old english, 14th century contraction that means God be with ye. The Bible says no one is good but God so Good represents God. And Bye means be with ye! So - God be with you!!

      +Lee Hillard
Oh sorry, forgot the blight. It is a fungus. Use fungicide to combat it. Try to water your tomatoes with a hose rather than drenching the leaves. Trim up the leaves near the ground. You can spread a little mulch around the plant to prevent water splashing spores up onto the plant.

I am doing my first winter garden, I have cabbage, and Brussel sprouts in ground and potted broccoli , I've had to cover them at night cause of the freeze at night, in the mornings I uncover so they get their sun, it's still chilly out during the day, my question is I'm sure they need water and am afraid to water them because it's still cold out , don't know if it will ruin them or ruin them by not, I also want to say I have watched many video's, you and Nancy's video's are my go to from now on you two are the best , Please help

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  6 років тому

They need very little water. Hold off on watering them unless you see wilting. Then water the ground and not the plant. They can take a little light frost but hard freeze will kill them.
