GR Yaris gives a Porsche 718 GT4 a run for its money on the Nürburgring!

- Very good day to be on track, dry weather with not too much cold. Taking a friend made in the parking lot for his first quick lap around the Nürburgring with the GR Yaris. The semi-slick tires were warmed up and the brakes were also performing at their peak! Unfortunately some drivers don't know when to get out of the way despite being clearly signaled to do so. It was still nice to see the GT4 move around but I wish the driver was more respectable and would have gotten out of the way at some point. Enjoy!

@@stefan0ro no fun poking. Everyone has the right to be as slow or as fast as they want. The main thing is to be respectful of others. If you are fast indicate you want to pass, keep some distance, and make a safe overtake. If you are slow look into your mirrors and let others by.

Having owned a GR Yaris with a track pack and now a Manual 718 GT4. I can tell you a GT4 is a much faster car. Though to your credit, you are obviously a much better driver and seemed to still have some capacity spare.
No doubt the GT4 is the faster car, you will need to push it to that level though.

The driver may be better (or more willing to take risks) on slower corners. But the Porsche tends to be getting held up by traffic and leaves him behind on the straights.
Flicking the hazard lights and indicators on when he has no room to let you pass is pathetic, arrogant and makes you look like a wanker…
@@luketregloan hazards come on automatically under heavy breaking. I had to go off the throttle a LOT to not come too close to the Porsche which ofc is running >100hp than the yaris, no wonder it would have the legs on the straight. When I used my left indicator it was always in situations where it would have been easy to let me by. I guess the ego wouldn't let that happen.
more of a driver's skill vs driver's skill. If you were in the GT4, you probably would have stormed off into the distance.

Agree. Everyone wants to measure their self worth by the car they drive. In reality, actual driver skill is a better measure and a more direct relationship regarding track times.

this reminds me of my days driving an Acura RSX Type-S at the track at Thunderhill. I was behind a stock FD RX-7 and would catch up in the turns easily. But then in the straights he would blast off, just for me to catch up again in the corners. And he refused to let me pass and ignored the point by's by the organizers. Point is, power isn't everything if all you can do is go fast in a straight line. So I love this video.
He didn’t let you pass because you would have slowed him down on the straights.
That reminds me of when I used to track an SA RX-7 and would get stuck behind 911s. They would rocket away in the only passing zone and then I would be on their rear bumper again in half a lap.

The Beemer eventually ALLOWS him past, then the Yaris gets very ragged and takes unnecessary risks.
Driver is exceptional but also that Toyota is something else. The power is just so smooth and constant.

The crazy part is that they managed more power in the GR Corolla version as well. I'm definitely looking into buying one of those.

Honestly..you started somewhere too.. probably not on an M2 but thats what his budget allowed I guess (I meant that as the car is quite expensive if youre just getting started, most people start off on some older BMWs like e36, e39 or e46).

Just a tip for the very first speed bump, try turning to left or right hard just before you hit them, should make the impact smoother. Not sure if watching your nice laps makes my waiting harder or easier lol :)

To be fair, the Porsche was being held up by traffic for most of the lap. At the end where it wasn't being held up by traffic there was a decent gap between the Porsche and the Yaris.

Nurburgring is a techy course that allows that Yaris to shine vs pure brute power of the Porsche
Gr4 is pretty far away from brute power. It’s a handling car, not a power car, and if driven as well as this Yaris was, would have vanished into the distance.

@@1061shrink1061 Spot on. I have a 718 GTS, had a couple of GR Yaris behind me on track, I leave them for dead. I've driven the GT4 on track and it excels through the corners, that's where it delivers most.

The BMW was doing the same stuff the Porche was for a ton of this. Seems that the Porche should have been signaling to the BMW like the yaris was. Either way, epic video, and I cant imagine how awesome it is to be able to say the Nürburgring is your local track! so cool!

Nice safe driving by the Yaris driverm with a shot in the bag for an opportunity. But even with tons of missed due to blocking, it can be joyful, is my own experience.

I own both of these and they are both so much FUN to drive!
I even like them better than my McLaren F1 and Ferrari 250GT.
The only downside I think is that if I drive either of them too too much my wife yells at me and tells me to turn off the console and put my controller down.
Great video! But let's be honest, this is a driver confidence/experience/skill thing, stick a good driver in the GT4, it would give any car a run for it's money.

That’s a 718 with aero, not a GT4, and you’re fully of crap because nobody on this planet, would pass up a GT4 for some stupid Toyota. You probably didn’t have the panache to even get a GT4 slot anyway. Not if you passed it up. You’d have to have tons of dough and a multi Porsche customer just to SMELL a GT4 much less pass one up. You’d would have already had several 911s to get a GT4 allocation, so no way in hell would you want some Toyota anything

For a guy driving that car so damn slowly, they sure didn't want to get outta the way! Every mechanical advantage on the track, and yet.
Properly driven, no traffic, good conditions... 718 GT4 7.32s, GR Yaris 8.15s. What you see here is one car driven well, the other not so well or they're on an out lap, plus traffic of course... all things being equal the Porsche would walk away from the Yaris. I have a 718 GTS and have tracked it a few times now, yet to have a GR Yaris keep up with me and there's always a couple on track where I go. Great little car if you want something on a budget that can deliver some fun, my sister has one - doubt that'll see a track though. LOL.

In the Porsche drivers defence, the only time he wasn't held up by traffic ahead or yellow flags himself, he pulled away from you, so he was actually faster.
He was just driving with consideration for others seeing as there seemed to be a LOT of other traffic on the road (yes road, it's a toll road during none race days).
It's pretty clear most of the commenters didn't actually watch the video through. Every time the Porsche got a clear air run it would pull away comfortably. The Yaris got close in a couple of the corners but it'd fall off on exit and wasn't faster overall. If the drivers had inverted with the Yaris moving in front, and the same commenters were to see the Porsche onboard, they'd be complaining about the Yaris driver instead.
When there's traffic up ahead there's not a lot you can do. The Porsche driver wasn't blocking the Yaris, the traffic was blocking them both.
The Yaris driver complaining about the Porsche in the subtitles shows his lack of appreciation for basic etiquette, not the Porsche's.

i´ve been on the track once with my 120ps car. It was so full at that day and people overtook me at such a close range in corners, that i got scared and never really left the right side of the track.
WOW. When Yaris hits and holds full boost, it was pulling on the Porsche. Highly impressive. It seemed to drive like stock. I'm very impressed.

The light flashes but I didn't notice anything. It's mainly over bumps where there is a wheel loosing traction on its own 👍
An experienced driver and good tires will out pace a fast car.
Not only experienced but most of all well known with this track, without experience on this track it is difficult to go fast and you will be passed by old cars with lees HP by people who know the track much better.
I totally believe this. Spent a track day with the local Porsche club- virtually none of those guys could drive. One guy was a real flier but the rest were pretty much posers. Money can buy speed but doesn't necessarily make you a fast driver.
The silver BMW was holding up both of you, the guy either wasn’t a very experienced driver, didn’t realize, or didn’t want to let you pass …
Once that was out of the way, that’s when it became really fascinating. The POV made it feel very real.
You were really in chasing mode, not a word, not a sound, just laser focus. Must’ve been a joy!

So much traffic! - the Porsche was held up for most of the video by the BMW driver and they were stuck in traffic most of the rest of the time...or giving space to other nervy drivers... it's clear that the Yaris driver is better than the Porsche driver (by about 15%-20% - wild guess) -- the Yaris driver in the Porsche would have waved goodbye. The GT4 gets round that track 45s quicker than the Yaris (in the hands of great drivers) - very impressive for the Yaris obviously to be only 45s slower
More than anything, watching the lines that the porsche took, and the lines that you took through some of the turns, shows you know the track better. The porsche took a lot of lines in turns that I would if I've never been on that track, or rarely been on that track before.

Porsche is 3208lbs vs GR Yaris 2822 lbs. 386bs difference. That Porsche can pull in straights but GR Yaris is catching up on the turns. Lightweight is a weapon.
Yeah right... Weight isn't everything. The yaris is a great car but you still have like 60% of the weight in the front. That's not ideal.
Which is why the Porsche stayed in front, it kept pulling away. Had the Yaris went ahead it would have been in the way at every straight
The GT4 is nearly a minute faster around the Ring - driven well, the Toyota would be history.
A very nice onboard, very good quality. Can you write down the exact parameters with which cameras were you shooting it?
Sure. GoPro 10, ProTune high bitrate, flat color, with medium sharpen. Color corrected in post, and I added a bit of sharpness because it felt soft. 5k 60FPS.

@@GONISMO ah no, that's a very old but reliable GoPro Hero 3+ Black. 1080p, 60fps, ProTune, Medium Sharp, Flat color.

@@VictorKhong88 GoPro stabilization. But actually I like it better without. I find that the stabilization dampers the sense of speed.

Off topic question, how has the engine been holding up? My experience with 3 cylinders in cars is that one cylinder always burns up and no one could figure out how to fix it, hope Toyota figured it out
what 3 cylinder? this is toyota they are only known for reliable cars
Stock they hold up well just for some reference look at the block of that engine the cylinder walls/ sleeves are thick as hell. Toyota has really put in a lot of r&d into that engine and even eith stock internals has been boosted to 500hp and the only issue that arose was a warped headgasket nothing else no warped heads no warped block nothing just the gasket at 500hp. That engine is honestly insane all around no matter what way you look at it.

Nice driving and I love the GR Yaris. But here the driver matters most. If you were driving the GT4, GR probably will not be even able to see where you went. GT4 driver was very cautious in curves; he doesn‘t know the track well enough.
Either that or he wasn't confident with his own car and doesn't want to push it.

Is this GR Yaris Modified ? Stock boost ? If so how much hp did you get off this little three banger ?
Stock engine. Suspension is modified and running semi slick tires. There is a full description of the car in the video description.

Toyota Yaris GR it is a phenomenal car! Look how fast it is and it handles so well! Keeping up with the Porsche. Obviously the Porsche its the faster car. However, the Yaris can be at the track all day and it will not breakdown or leave you stranded.
Question, Can a Porsche driver get warned for that type of behavior on the track?
Well maybe, but it's really hard for someone to spot it. You will be kicked out for the day rather quickly if you drive too fast under yellow or have a too noisy car.
I would have been ashamed to drive that yellow Porsche and struggle to run away from that Toyota yaris.
Actually the Porsche driver is very good in straight lane. He might be a straight lane specialist, not a curved road driver.
What's a straight line specialist? One who plants the throttle and that's it? I think we can all do that.
That GT4 is being wasted in his hands. If he can't get it round corners, sell it to someone who can.
