    Mike Portnoy played it right. He had FUN and didn't play it just like Bonham because even BONHAM never played a song the same way every time. He played in a Bonham style which rocked!

      kostas pap Bonham showed what is possible on drums not impossible. Quit believing in drum gods and know that you too can achieve what your heart desires. Bonham was great because he raised the bar in certain aspects and now we know what is possible. If you think playing Bonhams stuff is impossible I advis you to check out my buddy Terry Keating on the Bonzoleum channel :)

      haha very perceptive! I must have watched TSRTS a half dozen times when it first came to a Sacramento, midnight matinee movie theater. The whole place smelled like pot. Where they also played The Who's 'The Kids Are Alright', and a Devo movie.

      He really doesn't know the live version that well. Portnoy really hasn't picked up John Bonham's live playing much. There's tons of bootlegs out there of this song and Bonzo played it much more relaxed and smoother than Portnoy could ever play it.

Mike is an exception. He's not only a world class technician ( Buddy , Peart etc) but is a true rocker. This was the best Bonham style playing I've ever heard because he was so in it.

      I mean, he flat out can't play the song lol. Particularly the segment at 4:29, he lacks the technique to actually play it right, and instead, over simplifies it. I wouldn't call it "easy" compared to Dream Theater when this very video demonstrates he simply wasn't skilled enough to play the song properly LOL

    • @misfit2022
      @misfit2022 7 років тому

      Ninja Flips No, no, no, no, no Peart is a good technical drummer but he does not have the feel to play Bonham's drum parts. Also Peart never played behind the beat. He also plays crisp tight eighth notes. Bonham's style is more languid and he drags out every note and it is this which gives that Bonham feel. Modern drummers like Taylor Hawkins tend to play on the beat. There was a brief band called Salty Dog and their drummer had a similar feel to Bonham.

    Ok as a drummer of almost 20 years the "no feel" comments are the most ignorant comments Ive ever heard and Ive heard this said about Portnoy and other drummers I love many times before. What Ive come to realize is its usually from ignorant one style only jazz drummers who can never for the life of them play the way one of these prog/metal drummers can... and its ok! Not everyone can play everything or may not want to but to come dogging a Hall of Fame drummer about his "feel" it's fkn stupid grow up and dont suck

      People are so biased about Bonham , about feel and all that other stuff. He was a very good drummer. But Mike Portnoy can blow Bonham away. Any drummer would agree. Non-drummers won't agree. But a drummer's opinion holds a little
      more weight than a Zep fan. Mike Portnoy does an excellent job on this song, if not better job than Bonzo himself.

  • @EZCreepin
    @EZCreepin 9 років тому +5

    The key to Bonham's playing is that he would tend to play off the beat instead of on it. He would kind of lag his drumming to suit the style of the song. If the riff was a straight on count, we would swing the beat. If it was a swinging riff, then he would play off the swing and play a backbeat of sorts. You can see this in the studio version of "Since I've Been Lovin You". Also, Bonham had a galloping drum rhythm, which he used that in "Song Remains the Same".

    • @misfit2022
      @misfit2022 7 років тому +2

      EZCreepin No the key to Bonham's drumming was great feel and no one has ever replicated this. It is innate and can not be taught and set Bonham ahead of his peers. He was not as technical as a drummer like a Mike Mangini or Jojo but he has bags of feel.

    This is overall an amazing cover. I'm usually not very happy with covers of songs from Zep and such, but this is great. I can see the feeling from Mike Portnoy and I love that they included the famous "San Francisco" part from their lives performances. Overall, it was a great tribute to Bonham and I'm glad I heard it.
