I have had a pair of Goretex SMX-Plus since 2014. Like most footwear, personally I'd recommend people try them on - I tried the SMX5, SMX6, and I think maybe the Supertechs, and these fit just right. They were the most comfortable thing I'd ever worn as soon as I put em on and they have been one of the best things I've ever bought. When (If?) mine ever give up the ghost, I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.

    Sharing my comparison experience.
    Comparo review:
AStar SMX V2 Plus vs Forma Ice Pro Flow
Comfort: The Plus, by an apparent margin. Prior to comparing these I tried on the TCX Race Pro Air and Astar’s Supertech R. In order of comfort for my taste: Plus, TCX, Supertech, Forma. I tested all four walking around and this order stayed true. After just a few minutes the Forma let me know with pressure points at the heel and instep that it would rather be on the pegs. The TCX and Supertech are okay for limited off the bike time, but in the Plus I could have walked for hours!
Protection: Forma. The Plus feels like it had about a 40% greater rigidity in lateral flexibility when compared to the lower tier SMX6 V2. The Forma has more substance and surface area in its exoskeleton. For that reason I would rather have the Forma for track use.
Size: My normal size is 10.5 in non riding shoes. I wear thicker socks and for the SMX6 v2 I fit a 45, as well as other boots. The Forma in 45 seems like I could get away with a 44 if I get thinner socks; that’s how spacious it is. I wonder if an inner booty would have helped mitigate that for a tighter fit. The Plus fit just fine with my thick socks.
Fit: With thick socks, the Forma still had some wiggle room in the toe box. Even in the calf, with my slimmer calf size I cinched down the bracket to maximum and there was still a gap for extra calf or pant material to fit in there. For those with big calves or wider feet, Forma may be the answer.
Don/doff Ease: Forma, no contest. The Forma has no inner booty, shaving off time to don and doff. A quirk however is in the adjustment of the bracket. The Plus was easier to manipulate because of the design of the latch which required more of a macro movement with my finger instead of a finer “digging” into the recess of the Forma’s setup. A niggle but still noteworthy.
Quality: While walking around in the Forma there was an audible clicking sound coming from the top of the right boot. I couldn’t find where it was coming from and it was annoying with each step. Otherwise finish quality was similar. The Forma is $50 cheaper than the Plus. For the overall materials, I don’t know how else to describe it, but if I didn’t know the sticker prices I would have guessed the price gap was at least $100. The Forma “felt” like it was lesser quality. The fact that it had the clicking noise and some of the vents were just for show added to the cumulative feel.
However, the Forma’s sci fi looks and bulkier mass makes it look “bad ass macho”, where as the SMX plus gives off a more toned down, almost conservative assertiveness. I would have liked more pop in the Plus’ styling with the colors and/or design. The Forma’s shin TPU was huge and reminiscent of medieval armor. Cool details like the Italian flag and the alien-like exo skeleton would really add to ownership satisfaction. The zippers on both models work great. The inner booty of the Plus was simple to use and non-intrusive by just tucking the slack away. The Forma is bulkier and the Plus slimmer.
Conclusion: The Forma would be my choice for a track-dedicated boot if starting that route. For more money I’d get the underrated and unbelievably cool-looking TCX Race Pro Air. I would have chosen the Forma if it didn’t have that clicking sound and my feet were wider. The Forma has more unique and better looks, is more protective, and is cheaper. But seeing as I don’t track and I spend quite a bit of time off the bike, the Plus is the wiser investment.

@@richardcole1280 glad I could help at least one person! Since I wrote that review the Plus has held up without any issues. Getting into the inner Booty has become second nature, eliminating my previous concern of too much finagling just to get geared up. Walking around feels sublime. Daily riding I get to rock the astronaut Moto GP look. Peace of mind from the protection makes riding even more pleasurable.

Got these boots (v2)for 2 weeks now and I swapped the insoles for some Icon D30 ones and they are now ready for touring! However, I am thinking of buying a version 1 and having them resoled with touring soles so I can still benefit from the protection. There are places that resole MX boots that can do this and they are able to mold the sole into the boots. Lastly, the sizing issue is true. I wear a 44, and I sized down to a 43. A 43.5 would have been really good but with the proper socks, I am able to get a very good fit. I tried the 44 and it is way too long, and it would be very dangerous to wear them.

I'm heavily debating these and Supertech R's for mostly street use, with a handful of track days per year. Boots are the last piece of gear I need to be track ready. With a dual use case which do you think will suit better? Also if anyone knows, is the non perforated versions really that stuffy? Summertime here ranges from 95-100, but i'd hate to have to buy another pair for fall/ spring. Sorry for such a loaded question, and happy new year!

Hey Brian, I got these boots several weeks ago and wanted to give an update from my earlier post and also give a bit of a warning to anyone looking to get this boot. For me this boot was a pain in the ass right out of the box - it put a hurting on my feet really bad and were horrible to walk around in. The toes felt almost Sidi narrow and it was especially tight at the big toe which was too stiff to break in. I walked around the house in them for a week and nothing, I even tried different inserts and socks and they were still bad. My first thought was that you don't know what the hell you're talking about in this video, but others have said the boot was comfortable and I have normal feet, have had A*boots before and had no issue so I thought what gives? I thought about going up a size but knew that wouldn't work as the boot fit great from front to back, my toes were just getting squeezed from the side. I had boxed them up on two different occasions to send back as nothing I tried seemed to work and they were just hurting too much for me to try to break in with my feet. Well I really liked the boots and the protection they offer so I unboxed them and tried a different tactic - I heated them up a bit with a hairdryer, stuffed them to the gills with shoe paper and allowed them to cool off and that gave me just a little bit more room where I could tolerate breaking them in the rest of the way with a thicker sock on. So after another week of walking around the house in them they broke in quite nicely but I noticed that they DID NOT break in at the big toe (which is stiff due to the toe box and shifter pad) but they DID break in on the other side (pinky toe side) which relieved the tightness in the big toe. The break in was so nice that it fits like a custom boot that has been molded to my feet and I thought ok there's the comfort you're talking about. I was so much in awe (and still am) at how these boots went from feeling like complete crap outta the box to complete comfort after break in that I wrote A*s and let them know that their boot engineers are brilliant - yes the boot is that comfortable now to walk and ride in, with no need for thick socks or different inserts. So for anyone who gets this boot and runs into the same trouble I had (you may not), don't give up and don't go up from your normal A-star size, as you will be rewarded in the end with a comfortable custom boot that has a fantastic fit.

Happy to hear you were able to get these where you were happy with them. I have been doing this a long time and having worn more boots than I can remember now. IMO this is a super comfortable pair of boots. That said we are all shaped a little differently so anything is possible. - Van

Hey Bro, I agree with Van, these are super comfortable. I tried these on today at cycle gear so I can buy the right size from Van. I don’t know where u are experiencing the discomfort but I would say go up an extra size if you have pain in toe box. A 46 gives me a one to one fit but somewhat hurts my toes a bit and feel narrow. But a 47 is perfect for me right out box, no break in needed. If they were to break in more for me, it may be a problem so I’m a lil confused. But at some point I’ll probably just get a 47 so I don’t have to wait til breakin to enjoy comfort. Let me know if this helps.

      @garybraden4337 Рік тому +1

@@d.barnes5970 let me help you instead, it sounds like you didn't read all of my comment - I've had my boots for over a year now and they're fantastic and I didn't go up a size. I've always been a 46 euro across the board in all the main boots - Alpinestars, Dainese, TCX and SIDI and my SMX-Plus boots are a 46. It sounds like you're having the same problem I had when I first got my boots, the toe felt SIDI narrow (the length was fine), they felt like they didn't fit, but I kept working with them and when they finally broke in they felt perfect, like a custom boot made just for me. My suggestion to you is that if you've worn Alpinestars in the past (or if the boot is fine length-wise but feels a little narrow), then DO NOT go up a size, get your normal size - I've heard other people say that they went up a size for the same reason you are and in the end they regretted it because when the boot broke in they were too big.

    • @garybraden4337
      @garybraden4337 Рік тому

@@hh-xq6sg yes they did - I had the same issue (which was the only issue), my toes were a little pinched and in the same area you described. The big toe side did not widen because of the shifter pad but the pinky side did which relieved the tightness on my big toe. After that the boots felt really comfortable and had a custom fit and feel to them. What really convinced me that I had the right size (besides it being my normal A-Star size) is that they fit front to back and when I laid across the bed in them I had no discomfort whatsoever, not in the toes or anywhere else - I even fell asleep in them. It was just standing or walking around in them that was very uncomfortable but that disappeared after they broke in. If you feel your boots are the right size, if they feel fine otherwise except for the little bit of pinching in the toes, I say keep working with them to break them in just be sure you have the comfort you want before you ride in them.

Hello Brian, I never comment on your videos, but this time I would like to have the recommendation of a person experienced in the area, (I am using Google Translate, sorry if something sounds a bit confusing in my message) but the issue is that I am at a crossroads, I need to buy a pair of boots, I have never bought motorcycle boots, they would be my first pair, and I want them to be totally worth the investment, and I am not sure if I should buy the normal Alpinestars smx plus v2, (not perforated), or the Dainese torque 3 out, I know they are in similar categories, but they are very different boots, the Dainese choose to remove comfort but decide to put more protection in their favor, while the smx plus v2 are more comfortable but a little less "safe" To put it in one way, then I have the opportunity to buy the boots but I don't know which one, aesthetically I really like the SMX Plus, in red black white, simply beautiful, but I feel that the Dainese ones are much safer and more protective. You have to consider that the boots are designed to be worn daily, so I am looking for a comfortable, safe boot, and one that makes you say "I love these boots." They are the first boots I will buy, I am also partly looking for them to leave a good experience, That's why I want the decision to be worth it, so that's why I'm writing to you and looking for the recommendation of someone so experienced and professional in the area. If you have ever been a user of these boots, I would like you to tell me the feelings they left you, or If there were faults in the closure system, (which I have read about the smx plus v2, a problem that its micrometric closure broke down and did not close well over time and came loose), I would like you to give me details down to the millimeter if you had this boot . I watch your channel from Chile, I have been watching your reviews for a long time, sometimes I can use the UA-cam translator, other times it is not there but I still watch the video understanding a little of what you say lmao, but I always look for your reviews because I They seem quite descriptive and good, in short I am excited that you recommend which boot to buy, I would appreciate your comment, and if I buy the boot that you recommended, I will write to you again through this medium and tell you about my experience, I send you a huge greeting Thank you in advance for your response and your time, have a good day.

Hi, I am thinking about buying these boots but have a question such as will these boots fit under a pair of Hood riding jeans at the hem? The jeans are straight leg. I can wear them with my Alpinestars SP1 V2 short boots/shoes but can I wear them with full-size boots? Please advise.

I am not familiar with those jeans. These boots are not overly large at the top so if you are able to get any other full length boots into the jeans I would expect these would also fit. Only way to know for sure is to try. - Van

@@sportbiketrackgear Hey Van, are the SMX 6 V2 vented boots larger around the top than the SMX PLUS? What do you think about wearing the jeans inside the boot? Doesn't that look funny or does that look cool?

Definitely can confirm that Astars run a size larger. I tend to go by the Euro sizing as opposed to US. I have Dainese TRQ-TOUR Gore Tex boots in size Euro 40 / US 7.5 which fit me well. Went to my local Cyclegear and tried on the Astars Supertech-R in Euro 40 / US 6.5 and they fit just like a US 7.5 should. Not sure why their US conversion is so off.
Slightly unrelated, but have you guys seen the SMX Plus V2 Gore Tex boots? Astars has those listed at $226.77 on their website and I don’t see any retailers carrying those yet as I believe they are a new arrival. I’m confused as why the price is so low, would think Gore Tex would make it $400+ not reduce price by $100+ hehe

Thanks for sharing your experience with the sizing of the boots. We have not seen anything about the Gore Tex version of the SMX Plus V2. Odds are what you are seeing is an error on their site for pricing, I will shoot them a note. - Van

Yes the price is a mistake and v2 gtx are incoming soon. You can pre order them on european website like Motocard.

If I am a size 45 in the original SMX Plus will I still be 45 in the SMX plus V2? Thanks Van!

Yes you would be the same size in the latest model. They did not change the sizing with this boot. - Van

I have massive calve like 18inc circumference. Is this will fit?

I do not believe you will have an issue. Make sure to wear them and walk around on the carpet before you ride in them. If you are not happy with the fit you will be able to return them no problem. - Van

Smx plus V2 vs. Forma Ice Pro Flow? What do you think Mr Van?

Crash tested. Almost broke my feet. Not enough cushioning, not enough protection. Comfortable and flexible, yes. But could use more shock absorption cushioning

If you did not break your foot then the boots did their job. Sure there are others with a little more protection for more money, this is a good pair and it is quite possible you would have had the same result with a more expensive pair. - Van

If you want more protection just go with supertech or dainese axial d1. You have all range of price for every use protection/confort.

I crashed last week in the original SMX Plus boots, there's plenty of protection. The point of the boot is to keep your ankle from becoming some unrecognizable mess, not keep you cozy when you crash. As I found out last week, the boots work great, the RST-R18 worked great, Scorpion Exo R420 worked great, and the Alpinestars GP Plus gloves did as well. I walked away with 2 bruises where the bike fell on me, not a single scratch from the slide or impact onto the asphalt itself. I would recommend every single piece of gear, especially the boots.

Brandon Mohn ... you crashed in the ‘original’ 2003 SMX Plus, or the ‘original’ 2011 SMX Plus (there have been two versions PRIOR to these v2 ... I know 😏) ... ?
