I can't imagine why you're telling riders, especially new riders, that riding jeans are not necessary, and that they can get them later BECAUSE THEY'RE EXPENSIVE. That's so irresponsible. How about suggesting that they wait one more paycheck before hitting the road, and they can afford those jeans? I know my ass is worth $200, and it's an old ass, so the young people who are watching your channel sure should be encouraged to protect as much of their bodies as possible for just a couple hundred bucks. • @Vessekx

It’s amazing just how arrogant people are about not understanding what a lot of people’s budgets are like. The fact is that riding pants are actually the *lowest* priority basic safety item if you base it off of a rational risk/cost analysis.
      Helmet first.
      Gloves second.
      Jacket third.
      Boots fourth.
      Pants fifth.
Hell, depending on insurance costs in your area, a helmet cam so you can document what happened might even fit in there between boots and pants in the priority list.
That said, you can get a good pair of riding jeans for $140 or so (Street & Steel), or riding-specific textile pants to start with much less expensively than that (Viking Cycle).
That’s the route I went personally, and I had full gear for my BRS course. But I could easily budget that. Not everyone can, which means they end up prioritizing and buying what they can when they can.

    • @kvernesdotten
      @kvernesdotten 3 роки тому +2

    • @kvernesdotten
      @kvernesdotten 3 роки тому +8

@@Vessekx From not wearing pants? Im not following what exactly you are responding to now...
From everything ive seen so far you are most likely to shred your legs and back on the road like a cheese grater during highway speeds, and most likely to get some form of crush damage on extremities while riding in cities. Regardless of what type the accident is, it will be pure chance how much damage occurs. I know someone who died under 30 mph.
In any case, seeing as you can get a road worthy car for the price of a motorcycle + gear where the cost of ownership is lower (or a bus pass for that matter), I think its fair to consider motorcycles a hobby or toy for 99% of people out there. I dont believe anyone MUST ride a motorcycle without affording gear.
My point was that I really dont understand how pointing out that riding without proper gear is an unecessary risk, is in any way more "arrogant" than going out there without gear, telling yourself it wont happen to you or it wont be that bad. You have no control over that. By definition an accident is unforseen. But what you do have control over is what protection you choose.
My list would be something like:
      1 - Helmet.
2 - Jacket and pants that can be zipped together so they cant move if you slide.
      3 - Gloves and boots.
4 - a back protector with a hard outer shell
      5 - a big mac
6 - a motorcycle with whatever money is left in the budget
But hey, everyones priorities are different. Mine are based off of having survived an accident with permanent damage. Right leg in case you wondered, only reason it was not amputated is because I was wearing riding pants.
And no, im not saying im right and youre wrong period. Im just trying to add another perspective.

Srsly even at 100 km/h (60mp/h) it can lead to some really nasty flesh jeans combination that you don’t want. I agree. Abrasion protection is important. But I stand by what I said, if you are on a budget and you are just starting out - a helmet, gloves and over the ankle motorcycle specific boot is more important than riding pants. The most common injury on the lower body in a crash is broken ankles/feet. Also, a beginner likely won't slide out at 60mph. They are more likely to have a low speed drop where impact protection from hard parts is more important.

And you need a certain degree of protection for this dangerous hobby. You might not need a 400€ helmet or an airbag but cevlar jeans that protect your legs is not too far fetched. Doing 60 on the back roads or highway is pretty normal and every beginner should do that. If smth goes wrong on these roads you need that protection or get a nice jeans tattoo.

Incidentally, the tibia is the most commonly broken bone in motorcycle related injuries, although to my knowledge there aren't any riding jeans which afford protection for this, that's more of a motorcycle boot area.

I think when it comes to safety, there is no such thing as "unnecessary gear" if money is not a problem.
I had an issue with the airbag one. I have an airbag that cost me like 300 bucks. It is reliable and it could save you if you got rear ended or if someone tried to do a left turn (or right turn depending on where you live) in front of you. It protects your neck, your chest... It is not a matter of "I'm not driving recklessly enough to wear an airbag." It is a matter of "people are driving recklessly enough for me to wear an airbag."

The only one I agree with is the Kevlar shirt and for strictly a commuter the full back protector and 1-piece suit. But other then that, you are more likely to fall or wreck when you are first starting out. Buying the best gear possible might not just save your life, but commonly adds comfort as well. For example, cheap helmets are commonly heavy, loud, and the vents are commonly for decoration cause you'll never be able to tell if they are open or closed. In helmets like Shoei, Arai, and a few others they fix many of those issues along with being leaders in helmet safety. If you do more than your casual ride to the store (which most of us do) I think Dainese airbag vest and the upcoming Alpinestar Tech air 5, which is designed for the street only (not to be used on the track) are amazing since it's additional protection in most jackets weak spots. The only piece of gear I never use is handle bar covers, bought them and they were a pain to use. Also textile mesh jackets, though cheap, it might be better off buying a perforated leather jacket in the name of safety.

Luckily (contrary to the name I'm female) I had thigh length leather boots that did in fact save my knee and leg. Eventually they started producing decent leathers for females and my second accident saved many parts of my body. Only needing hospital treatment for a couple of days. I see a lot of flak here... And I think papa yam is right on the money.
I think a lot of biking is like this:
Ride around parking lots? you don't want race slicks, you want tires that work in the cold, you want pads that work in the cold and you may as well dress appropriately.
Ride fast on the road? You start to need better gear, need better tires, need a better serviced machine, better brake pads, better brake fluids.
Ride on the track / racing? You need a bike prepped for it, race tires, race pads, racing suit.
As you get faster and more aggressive you need to scale your WHOLE budget up: bike, tires, gear etc... like when starting out you don't need a HP4 race, a Z125 does just fine.
This is a video aimed at beginners and I think its solid advice. Dress yourself and your bike up to the type of riding and your budget (appropriate to riding style)
Whats the damn point (and I see this a lot) of a guy riding a scooter in a helmet that's worth 3 times more than his ride? and then not having gloves or any of the other recommended equipment? just cause someone told him to buy the best helmet that he can buy...
    PRIORITIZATION

Nope sorry. You work with enough spinal cord injuries as I do and you will be the first to purchase an airbag best\jacket because the right one will come from under the helmet making a potential life saving barrier to protect the cervical spine and back protection that goes all the way down to the sacrum is a must as well to help with walking in the future. Ask Wayne rainy. (sp) I agree with others. You can not have too much protection. How about suggesting make the equipment purchase before the bike because your life is worth more than a few hundred dollars. I mean how can you have the budget for a 10k motorcycle but not a $500 jacket? Normally I like your vids minus all the freaking commercials but this one was irresponsible.

I highly disagree with everything you have said in this video. If you weigh all your safety concerns on dollars than you shouldn't even ride. Why should dollars be compared to your life which cannot be replaced? If you can't afford brand new gear i.e. jacket, gloves, full leather pants, buy used. I do not reccomend buying a used helmet as one does not know what happened during its use unless you are experienced and can spot issues. Simple fact, spend the money(if you dont have it at that time, be PAITIENT, save your money and then purchase the gear you want and need). For me, I would rather spend the money on really good riding gear to protect myself in the event of a fall or as we all know the non-drivers out there that just dont pay enough attention, than to wish I had it laying in the hospital bed permanently paralyzed or needing massive skin grafts. Be safe, wear your riding gear everytime, all the time. Shalom✡🙏👌

As someone who lives in rural montana with deer, elk, and that stupid random dog that likes to appear out of nowhere with no chance of avoiding, i WILL be getting full gear including tech air street. For my location its a necessity. For most other places, not so much.

I'm not a risk taker, I'm a good boy who follows the law and all that. I still picked up and airbag and you want to know why ? For two reasons: 1. I live in a mountainous area and if I slip and happen to fall down a slope or a ledge or wathever it could save my life. 2. I'm not worried about my riding as much as I'm worried about others. If a car slams into me at least I'm at less of a risk of breaking my back or snapping my neck.

Imagine if we applied the same thought about cars. We wouldn't have fenders, abs, belts or airbags...afterall we only need these things if we run over the speed limit, drive dangerously and don't follow signaling. We only need SKILLS! Not even once a safe and careful driver got involved into a massive car accident despite all of he's care and attention right? Just GET GOOD SCRUB!

You don't really need a helmet... The same way the tires protect the rims use a tire to protect your head.

I disagree on not needing riding jeans. A motorcyclist needs the added protection. The rider doesn't have to buy the most expensive gear, but has to buy the gear for his/her protection. My gear: Scorpion r420 helmet, Scorpion Optima jacket, Scorpion Havoc gloves, Scorpion Covert pro jeans, Bull It jeans (under $100 sale at Revzilla), Harley-Davidson riding sneakers. Also, I did buy the armor for the jeans, and upgraded the back pad for the jacket. Bought all separately over 5 months time before I bought my 1st bike.

I have a thick Mocka jacket (Mocka being leather without the smooth surface), thick as in like 2mm thick (normal ones are around 1mm, with some cloth liner on the inside.
NOT a riding jacket but what i had available atm.
Sturdy leather boots, a good Fully Closed helmet as well as strap on back-protection, thick-sturdy leather gloves.
    Ive ordered strap-on knee-protection.
Planning on getting some Riding Jeans (with kevlar or something that wont tear like normal ones).
As well as probably some better gloves, maybe even proper riding jacket from the mainland at a later point.

For cold weather riders - say above freezing but below 45 degrees - riding long distances ... I would suggest heated gloves or if the aesthetic doesnt bother you - grip deflectors. I did a Dallas to ElPaso trek with temps varying between 40 and 50 degreesF. At speed, the wind chill is pretty low and while the grip warmers kept my grip toasty, the backs of my hands felt frostbitten after 13 hours. So, heated gloves. Cheap alternative if you have some room in the gloves, put a Hot Hands heater pack on the top of your hands inside the glove. Agree, this is limited circumstances, but cold hands on long trips create fatigue, annoyance, and distraction the longer you are on the bike. Great vid.

So I’m just gonna leave this here I’m going to list a bunch of injuries you can get when you don’t use spine protectors that are of a level two quality so ruptured disc cracked vertebrae severed nerve endings that can end in paralysis or you can be a full body quadriplegic for all you people out there that don’t know what that means you’re paralyzed from the neck down you can’t use your hands also would you rather sweat or Bleed safety gear does have a place and it’s on your body not in the store so spend those dollars because at least you can come back and say I didn’t like this instead of not being able to come back at all by the way I also work at Cycle Gear so my opinion might be a little biased but if anybody feels the need to you can always pop up at the Cycle Gear store in White Plains and say it to my face my name is Eli

Leather jacket, gloves , boots, job done.
Ok skid lids came in but a whole ultra selling industry has grown over you MUST wear this that or the other.
Heated gear ? Really ? How did I manage commuting 20 miles each way for 15 years all year around in the UK so lots of rain and cold winters.
