- Back to basics with fruit tree pruning - Step 3: how to prune the branches. Go methodically along each one removing clutter to bring light, shortening overly long laterals for lots of fruit, thinning out wood that's gotten too big for renewal shoots and heading the end back to where you want it. Remember to admire all the fruit buds as you go. They've grown just for you.
Wonderfully explained. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Something worth remembering when pruning with pruning shears is to always keep the blade towards the portion you’re going to retain. If the anvil is towards the portion, you’re going to retain, you will crush the branch collar or stem. It’s a finer point, but I think you will find it. It’s beneficial as the wound heals more quickly when it is undamaged. Here in the US the average life of a Peachtree is just nine years. That is because stone fruit have a limited capability to form water, sprouts to replace the vegetation, that has been pruned away. Most trees are over pruned and in the case of stone fruit They are unable to replace the vegetation quickly enough. Happy spring!
A superb instructional video, to the point and easy to follow for an amateur gardener like myself.
Thank you for putting this up 😊
Helpful and clear, thank you. Your book is also wonderfully clear. About to go outside and consider what I should cut off my young fruit trees. This was a great inspiration.
So much more helpful than a lot of the other videos i've watched! Thank you!!!!
Omgosh! Thank Kath.
Giving me the confidence to rescue my peach tree. It's a hot mess at the moment.
Just found you on your channel and love your work 💪🏼🇦🇺👍🏽👌🏼
Another great video Cath. Thank you. A tip for those who like me, have difficulty seeing the scaffolds and leaders etc. Put on a LED headlight and go out at night to have a good look at your trees! The bright light really shows up the structure with the dark behind.
At last Something to understand without taking too long.
Thankyou from Dunedin!
Best video I could get!!!
You are so awesome. I really appreciated your on point, totally informative and inspiring videos. Hope you're still growing n sowing and doing well xx
Loving these clips - in combination with your book, it's giving me confidence to give it a go. Thanks
Thanks Robina!
I really like this channel! More videos please 😉. I've started our own mini orchard, and your information is perfect for what I'm doing. Thx
Such simple and friendly explanations! Thank you.
You are so beautiful and your pruning techniques are also beautiful. I want to see this again and again.
Great video. I cant wait to get your book
these have been a joy to watch and are very informative! will you post any about how to prune in order to train a young tree (1st or 2nd year of growth) into both single leader and vase shapes? would love to see more for trees at different stages!
oh ya , this was better, wish it was longer
Thank you for the video. I have a question and I'm hoping you can help. I'm here in Southeast Iowa (5B). I have two peach trees. I have scaffold branches, several laterals on each scaffold branch. Pruned them this summer but neglected to wait for late summer. The top half of my scaffolds are new growth from spring. The laterals on these scaffold branches are also new growth from spring. Since I pruned two weeks ago, I'm getting laterals all up and down where I thought there would be flower buds. Will these new summer laterals have time to form fruiting buds before next spring, or did I mess up by triggering new growth and have lost what would be fruit bud growth on spring growth that would be second year fruiting wood? Thanks for any advice.
Do you happen to know what the tree’s response would be if I summer prune the grafted laterals? These are 4-5 year established espaliers (apple and a pear) that have been completely unproductive.
Great
Intelligent mam 👌🆒️👆
Thank You for such helpful tips..can you please suggest apple and cherry tree food or organic fertilizer I can give them. My trees are 2years old. Thank You!
Can we plant seedlings for high density orchards and train them as tall spindle tress or for high density we need to plant the dwarfing rootstocks?
What is the use of bambo sticks with Apple plants?
