Pruning Fruit Trees The Basics Step Three The Branches
Back to basics with fruit tree pruning - Step 3: how to prune the branches. Go methodically along each one removing clutter to bring light, shortening overly long laterals for lots of fruit, thinning out wood that's gotten too big for renewal shoots and heading the end back to where you want it. Remember to admire all the fruit buds as you go. They've grown just for you.

Pruning Fruit Trees The Basics Step Two The Framework

Back to basic Fruit Tree pruning! Step 2.Start your prune with the framework - loppers and saw in hand. Its amazing the difference removing one whole branch makes - often times this is all that's needed. If your fruit trees are big wild crazy things, don't prune them back to a classic shape all in one go. The harder you prune this year, the harder they'll shoot next year. Keep growth steady by ...

Thanks for the video. Something worth remembering when pruning with pruning shears is to always keep the blade towards the portion you’re going to retain. If the anvil is towards the portion, you’re going to retain, you will crush the branch collar or stem. It’s a finer point, but I think you will find it. It’s beneficial as the wound heals more quickly when it is undamaged. Here in the US the average life of a Peachtree is just nine years. That is because stone fruit have a limited capability to form water, sprouts to replace the vegetation, that has been pruned away. Most trees are over pruned and in the case of stone fruit They are unable to replace the vegetation quickly enough. Happy spring!

Thank you so much Kath! Your videos have helped so much...I have a wee backyard orchard at my place (rental) on the Kapiti Coast. 10 very overgrown fruit trees! (2 apples, plum, peach, nectarine, fig, 2 pears, an olive, oh, and a tiny hidden plum...who knows when they were last pruned!) I'm heading back out after watching a bunch of your vids...feeling inspired, and heaps more confident! Kia ora e hoa!

So my young tree is filled with branches and leaves all over the main stem. Does this mean strip it all off and cut all the branches except for the ones you want to keep. Sounds obvious but I also watch videos that say don’t prune the wrong way

Do you happen to know what the tree’s response would be if I summer prune the grafted laterals? These are 4-5 year established espaliers (apple and a pear) that have been completely unproductive.

Thank you for the video. I have a question and I'm hoping you can help. I'm here in Southeast Iowa (5B). I have two peach trees. I have scaffold branches, several laterals on each scaffold branch. Pruned them this summer but neglected to wait for late summer. The top half of my scaffolds are new growth from spring. The laterals on these scaffold branches are also new growth from spring. Since I pruned two weeks ago, I'm getting laterals all up and down where I thought there would be flower buds. Will these new summer laterals have time to form fruiting buds before next spring, or did I mess up by triggering new growth and have lost what would be fruit bud growth on spring growth that would be second year fruiting wood? Thanks for any advice.
