I just wanted to say, I have watched many and many "how to prune fruit trees" videos, and this was by far the easiest to follow and I definitely feel confident pruning my fruit trees now. Thank you very much!
Well said man! I have also searched and searched and most of the videos were confusing. Luckily I found this guy and now I have enough confidence in pruning
What time of the year should we be pruning fruit trees? I have just bought a home with four apple trees one pear tree one cherry tree and I don't know anything about it. I'm learning
This is the best one I’ve seen so far! I don’t want to cut anything off the tree so even though you said the trees aren’t screaming and crying, I will be screaming and crying when I do this. 😭😫😩🥺😢😪
Thank you for putting this video out there. I have a peach tree that I am learning to prune on. I first learned how to prune last year by watching a Paul Gautchi video. I was so pleased to actually have larger peaches growing this year! I would like it if you would post an updated pruning video as your trees grow every year. Thanks so much!
Finally! A video that is quick, easy to follow, and most of all thank you for facts and the professional way of demonstrating. I hope you have a video for easy to prune raspberry patch and how to keep the weeds out over the summer!? That would TOTALLY make my day :)
I wish I had a friend like you around here that I could learn from. To spend a day in the garden learning all the tricks would be invaluable, until then, I have your videos. Thanks for those.
Thank you Luke and MI Gardener for posting this video. I came across this video because I was seeking further clarification of Jesus pruning fruit trees in John chapter 15 in the Bible. The part about cutting out the diseased, dead, or dying branches (the three D's!) in order to not spread that unhealthiness to other branches made sense to me. Likewise, there are members in Christian churches worldwide that do the world a disservice instead of producing fruit. Producing fruit in this context is essentially demonstrating love and righteousness and producing more disciples for Jesus. And there are those that produce fruit that Jesus will prune and help produce even more fruit. An example of a Christian individual that is producing a lot of fruit is Pastor John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California (associated with Grace to You Ministries).
Thank you for easy to follow instructions! I have never had fruit trees to maintain til I retired, but am determined to take proper care of trees so grandchildren can enjoy the benefits with me. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video. Have watched so many but yours was very informative for a new gardener with 12 potted fruit trees 2yrs old now. Thanks again ❤️🙏 xx
Very useful tips! Aaaand to anyone who was cringing over the amount he pruned, dont. It really helps make the tres stronger and produce more for longer. Also! The cuttings you removed dont have to be wasted, dip them in some honey or rooting hormone and place em in a pot in a shady corner. They are clones of the original tree and will grow into full sized versions of the parent tree in time. Thanks again Luke!
Great video- straight to the meat and potatoes of teaching you what you need to know: how to decide which branches to prune on your tree. Other videos waste so much time!
Thank you! I really feel confident now. I have been so scared to prune. Every video I watched made me even more nervous. I will remember the 3 D's and the CAC rules. Wish me luck!
Just wanted to suggest that you carry a dollar store spray bottle filled with alcohol to spray your tools with as you go plant to plant or tree to tree. It makes it a breeze to sanitize.
I order 99% and keep it in a spray bottle that I grab every time I grab my tools. Last year diseases spread so easily over m garden and it was much more control d this year.
Best information ever! I have books on this topic but none explain it as clearly and as easily understood as you just did in a 7 minute video. Thank you!
Great simple instructions, easy to follow and helps with being a fearless prunner. Like the simple rules given! The 3 Ds (dead, dying diseased) & the 3 CACs ( Crossing, Acute, Clustered)! I love pruning yet sometimes explaining to others is tricky. This helped me remember and helped to know how to explain better. THANK YOU!
Ten thousand THANKS for your video! A+ for AUDIO! A+ for CLARITY and A+ for general ELOQUENCE! At this very moment, I am going outside to scrutinize my guava YOUNG guava tree, in order to decipher whether or not it requires the immediacy of pruning.
Excellent tips! Recently found a “wild” peach tree in my yard, I thought it was a kind of willow until it produced fruit! It’s really going wild, I needed just those tips to start caring for it. Thanks!
I can see. why Ray promotes your channel. I had to come check you out. I must say, I really enjoyed this video. I am impressed. You make things clear and easy to understand.
ROTFL the enthusiasm peeking between the branches!!! LOL You're awesome. LOVE your channel and I so NEEDED this video right now! I JUST replanted my 2 year old calamondin citrus tonight (it had poor drainage), fixed the drainage holes, added coco cuir, more perlite, plus the ecoscraps citrus fertilizer. I'll let my tree adjust to the new soil and will keep this video for future (very soon to use) reference. Thank you Luke!!!
+MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living I need this citrus guide you speak of! I have a citrus that is in a container and really needs to be transplanted.
You should teach people how to clone those clippings or graft them or make tea. I make tea with all of my Citrus leaves and it's great. I also make tea with my peels. Look it up super nutritious.
Thanks Luke! Very timely for me! I just purchased seven apple trees and have them outside waiting for me to plant! I'm delighted I watched this video along with your other video on transplanting! Thanks again! VERY HELPFUL!!
A BIG THANKS 😁 J just moved to northern California in the forest and just planted my orchard fruit nut trees super excited and now learning how to trim before winter
Complete and concise. Having watched a lot of other pruning videos, this one gets it right! Not too much useless information . I actually could understand the main ideas. DDD. CAC. The idea of Acute Angles made my thinker POP! Got it! I went out immediately and pruned my apple tree. ...and it looks good!
I'm NOT an expert, but have a lot of small and some large fruit/nut trees--I would cut the horizontal branch, I like them to angle UP from the trunk. Thanks for the very useful advice!
This is exactly the video I was looking for! My lime tree isn’t doing well and needed advice on how to prune it all off to encourage better growth instead of fruiting
Great video, Luke. Learned something new-- prune clusters and acute angles. Pruning is fun and something that many of your viewers may agree is cathartic for both the plant and the self.
I admit that at this video is one of the most useful information of of to prune a fruit tree I've ever come across. Thanks for sharing Al the pro-tips and how's. For that reason, I subbed 👍🍃🌿☘🌴🌲🌱
I truly needed this info badly. I have a new Apple tree that looks like yours, but didn't pruned it after planting it, and my peach tree that we can never seem to get rt just because we don't know how, we were afraid of killing it. Thanks again Luke
Prityboylu Villa Oh no, you won't kill it. Just keep searching for good pruning videos on UA-cam. There's a lot of good ones out there. Not much difference with peach. Happy growing!
Prityboylu Villa: I wouldn't say this guy is wrong. But there is another side to this. Food for the tree is made in the leaves. (1)So I leave a few more leafy branches on after planting the trees, for at least a year. It is to encourage growth, and therefore establishment of the tree. (2) Did you notice the extra branch he left on, in the lower right? That is called a temporary branch. Its job is the work of more leaves, it helps to increase trunk diameter, and it can be removed when the crown of the tree gets fuller. (3) When pruning away on those branches, note the direction of buds. Prune just outside a bud that faces the direction a future new branch should grow. As he said, branches are to face or grow outward. (4) Did you notice his pruners? They are the kind you need. They cut with a scissors action, and therefore don't crush anything. And they are good for making proper cuts, which will grow in importanxe as the tree grows older.
You take the clusters off not for lack of air flow but to promote fruit spurs lower down about the three lower nodes. Then go down five nodes and girddle the limb to promote growth below that to prevent what they call blind wood ( no fruiting)
I am new to fruit trees and I loved this video! You explained everything expertly! Thank you so much for this... My Peach Tree thanks you too! 🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑
Just on the transplant shock and pruning straight away... I did study Horticulture and Arboriculture in 2005 and then they were saying that it is in fact better to wait a few days before pruning back a tree or shrub after a transplant as it enables the plant to draw growth hormones down from their shoots to the damaged roots. Obviously if it is hot and windy then reducing the crown would be wise to prevent drying out via transpiration, and in the case of your apple tree it looks like you would have left some growing tips in place in order for this process to take place anyway.
Thanks, I love the 3Ds and CAC to apply a theory like this at the tree is helpful, and not the copious notes I have written in my garden notes from other apricot tree pruners.
A university fruit tree expert told me you can prune different canopy amounts by type: 50% peach, 40% nectarines, 30% apricot and plum, but only 10-15% for apples (a multi year plan required).
Luke, really enjoy your channel and all the tips and the individual video you have done no a number of different vegs. Thank you for all you do to help people to grow there own food. Think about creating your own book. I would buy it.
I was reading John 15 (which everyone should read) and wanted to see what pruning actually looked and this video blew my mind. If Any of you are going through a season where you feel like every branch every connection is being cut off like a twig just know God is too good of a God to let you grow anything that will not bear fruit in your life. Unlike trees it actually hurts for humans to be pruned but that pain is temporary and often necessary! It may hurt now but trust God in the process ❤️ Jesus loves you and so do I

Literally went searching for same reason and was in same chapter lol…Hey sisters in Christ!!😂❤ May we continue to grow closer to the Lord in Jesus name amen
Thank u for the wonderful sharing. I definitely gain so many new things from u guys. Now, I can adhere to a specific guide when pruning. Previously, I just cut randomly. I think I actually prune some of them too much.
Luke have 10 trees on order and would like to know two things. 1- I want to keep them from growing too tall, so I am thinking the goblet style of pruning for all that do well with it. I thought I heard some prefer to have a leader. In your opinion, would the goblet style work for peach, cherry, plum, apple and pear trees? 2- Which trees are More aesthetically pleasing, so I can put the prettiest towards the road. I am thinking cherry would be pretty on the road/house approach side. What would be your second pick as prettiest/cleanest? Plum? Pear? Just thought I would ask for your opinion.
Other sites say prune in winter when dormant? Also can you do a video about removing fruit from diff types of fruit trees and how much to remove? great info, thanks!
Great video, although I'm a bit confused because I was just reading about newly planted trees and how you shouldn't prune them because you may be pruning off stored auxin, which is needed for root development of the new tree, and that the foliage is needed to produce photosynthate, also important for root development. So much conflicting information makes for one confused student! If anyone can offer input to help de-confuse me, I welcome comment. Thanks!
Deanna Brand simply put Deanna...the young man is wrong and you are correct. Ty for giving his viewers a chance to learn from the books this kid needs to be reading before just doing what he is told.
I've always been against pruning trees in the spring and prefer to wait until fall. Pruning at the wrong time may cause the tree to bleed out while the xylem if flowing up from the roots. It could also attract insects to the open wound. If you are pruning a large branch off, there are products that can be dressed over the cut that help protect it. Good video as always, my opinions on pruning may differ slightly but it basically comes down to the situation and what state the tree is in. I think you should do another video on this in 5 years when the trees are more mature. I'm sure you will, but that's just my 2 cents. Thanks - keep up the great work you are doing!
Jacksoner -just remember if uou prune in fall you cut iff protection from eliminates that might cause damage. If your weather in Jan/ Feb will allow you to prune, that is best for plants . Cover if frost in area over night ,uncover daytime. Most growing will start around march.grapevine i do in Jan only a one or two cuts if flow in growing season so plants heal. Sprimg flowering trees and shrubs do as soon as blooms down to a few flowers . New growth is next season's flowers. Fruit trees do early spring before leaves and buds appear. Once you have flowers you will be reducing fruits from crops harvest. Your growing season will decide whether or not prune time for accuracy so you can provide the best possible outcomes for produce, flowers ,growth. For a long healthy life of your plants.
Very helpful video as I've been pruning my fruit trees the wrong way! Thank you so much!! Do you also do a video Mr Gardener, on how to support branches of fruit trees that have lots of crops that causing the branches to droop? Thank you again!
Hi Betsy, There are three considerations about branches that are heavy with fruit. •First, what kind of fruit is it? •Second, you are welcome to prop up branches with a board, etc. When you do that, would you cushion the place of contact please? We don't want rubbing, which would cause an open wound. That would lead to other problems. •And third, if your tree is an apple or a pear, it is a good idea to thin the fruit. This is both for weight reduction and fruit quality. The tree has X amount of energy for the season. If that energy is divided among fewer fruit, then each fruit gets more attention and will be bigger and better. The goal is not more fruit, it is higher quality fruit. A good way to determine the amount of fruit thinning is like this: hold out your hand. Curl your fingers but leave your thumb and pinky out. Spread these two fingers wide. Hold these fingers on the branch. This is the distance you want between fruit. Come back some time if you try these things. Let us know how you did.

This does not really apply to citrus since citrus LOVE growing on round bushy large trees.

Enjoyed this video, will definitely help with my fruit trees. Clear concise information, just what I needed

Very helpful video as I've been pruning my fruit trees the wrong way! Thank you so much!! Do you also do a video Mr Gardener, on how to support branches of fruit trees that have lots of crops that causing the branches to droop? Thank you again!
Hi Betsy,
There are three considerations about branches that are heavy with fruit.
Great video, and very encouraging and inspiring! Thanks! I will start pruning the fruit trees this week. 😊🍀🌟
