I've been watching a number of pruning instruction videos for my peach tree. Most talk only about the platform and taking the branches that rub, acute angles, and reducing the foliage and opening the middle. This the first one I've seen that answered my questions. I now have an understanding of cutting technique, precisely where to cut and why, just so much information that I am delighted to have found it. This video is terrific.
Glad the video was helpful. Peach trees are different from all other fruit trees and require their own pruning technique. Here's a video where Orin shows how a peach tree grows its fruit buds and how to prune accordingly. ua-cam.com/video/HIAGl10RvAQ/v-deo.html
Orin is the greatest of all time, a true horticultural master! I have received many lessons on pruning from him at the Chadwick garden and CASFS, but since I graduated i’ve been missing his witty wisdom. I was so happy to find him here! You guys should do a whole Orin series, this man needs his own documentary with the amount of gardening wisdom he holds ❤

Thank you. After a few years of floundering I can finally look at my trees and understand them better before taking pruners to them and hoping for a response. You really opened my eyes and understanding.
This is the best pruning video i have seen so far. The rational is explained. The errors too. The consequences. The love. And the simplicity of a good heart.❤

I’ve looked at a number of videos trying to learn the best method. This one is right to the point yet detailed and extremely informative. I don’t want entertainment with a bunch of cute music and graphics, I want information. This is absolutely excellent. Thx

My approach to pruning, while generally similar to your own, varies in a couple of ways. The techniques I employ have been applied to fruit trees that were at least 20 years old when I bought my place on Oregon's south coast 48 years ago. So the phrase, 'tried and true', most certainly applies. Because I have standard apple, plum, and Asian pear trees, their tendency to produce vigorous growth is borne out every year, with new growth anywhere from 18" to over 36". So it is imperative to cut way back, leaving anywhere from 3 to 5 leaf buds, otherwise the branches would become too whippy and incapable of supporting fruit, as you have pointed out. The direction which these buds face is typically outward so the center of the trees are open to sun and air movement. Where I deviate from your approach is where I make the cut. I gently slide my pruner down just above the bud I am about to cut until the bud itself stops further progress, at which point I snip. I know you spoke of dieback, but I have only seen that occur less than 1% of the time. When you leave a stub, it will die off and eventually rot-- a situation that doesn't benefit the tree. As a remedy, if you go back later to snip off those dead stubs, you are then pruning that one branch twice. On my large trees where I have made close to a thousand cuts on one, that is too labor intensive and, I have found, unnecessary, for nothing is gained. The other difference is in the angle at which you make your cut. The greater the angle, the more surface area needs to go through the healing process. On a tree with several hundred cuts, this amounts to a great deal of energy that the tree expends in recovery. While I am cognizant of not leaving a flat surface upon which moisture can cling, most of the branches grow at such an angle that a perpendicular cut is as capable of shedding water as your steeply angled ones. Also it will heal in a year's time. Angled cuts definitely need to be employed if the situation provides no alternative. Pruning techniques widely vary among orchardists. There are some constants, but the purpose of my contribution here is to show that other approaches have also been successfully taken. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Gary - thanks for a through description of your pruning methods. After nearly 50 years of pruning the same trees, it's clear you have developed a pruning system that works well for your trees and you. You also make the case that there are variations on basic pruning methods that will produce healthy trees and a lot of good fruit. Here's a video on summer pruning of apple trees. If yer interested, give a look and see how it compares with your summer pruning: ua-cam.com/video/9ioGcl7gHgc/v-deo.html Thanks for your comments and here's wishing you continued success with your orchard!
Best pruning vid yet. I'm an older guy and tired of vids telling me I need safety glasses and gloves to prune. Most time I'm half cut and never been hit in the eye and who cares about a small scratch or cut.
This is the first time I really understood what branches to prune. The explanations are concise, throughout, clear and helpful. I am so appreciated to the people involved with making this video.

Right before the 15:35 time mark I believe you said " shortening cuts in 2 year old wood ( or older ) stops the growth of that lateral " and redirects the growth to a one year old secondary lateral lower down from the shortening cut. I have noticed that phenomenon but didn't realize the reasoning that such a cut stopped the growth of the branch of 2 year old wood. Per your lesson at the 15:35 I understand what I observed

Glad it was helpful! BUT, there is a major difference between the fruit bud "life" on apple and peach trees. Apple fruit buds can produce fruit for 8-10 years, peaches for only 1 year, this requiring a very different pruning approach. Outstanding. Learned more from this lecture than all the reading I’ve done. Trying to recover four trees in Wisconsin. Beyond proper trimming, they seem susceptible to everything. Trying to learn!
Holy 🐄! This is THE BEST information I have found for pruning!!!!! All the others just say, “Cut here.” But they do not explain WHY! I have never heard anyone else talk about the different types of buds, the difference in growth age, NOTHING! I learn by understanding WHY something works, not memorizing what to do! THANK YOU FOR YOU VIDEO!!! You gained a new fan (and subscriber) in only 4 minutes of one video! ❤❤❤ Hopefully, in a year or two, I will be gushing about how you singlehandedly helped me produce stronger, better producing lemon trees!! Now, hurry up! Teach me more, 😂 I can hardly wait to learn!

I agree with your comment. But felt the need to share that citrus trees tend to have different pruning ideals to promote fruit production than the trees used in this video. Not to say there isn’t much info to be gained from this great demonstration, but it’s a good idea to look thru the info they have in the link provided in their reply. To get specific citrus pruning info. Happy growing!

Hey Orin this is Gardner I used to bring you bread every week. I have the best memories of fresh fruit from the farm on your porch when I dropped the bread each week. Your video is the best!
currently doing a dual trade apprenticeship to become a gardener in Germany, You're videos are a great source of additional information, keep up the good work!
UC SANTA CRUZ CENTER: This taught me more in literally 5 minutes than all the other videos in wild apple tree pruning. The speaker knows HOW to teach the way teachers in late 1960s knew how to teach; refreshing.
We at the farm all admire Orin's teaching ability and deep knowledge. He's been teaching and gardening for more than 45 years, now. He's used the videos as a way to observe his teaching and he's gotten even better at teaching over past couple of years. Below is a link to several more fruit tree care videos. This is a brilliant video. Every apple tree expert I talk to has a slightly different approach to pruning. It doesn't matter. What matters is that I understand what I'm doing, and Orin's video is so clear and explains the process perfectly. And the quality of the filming is way better than any other UA-cam pruning video that I've watched. Thank you, Orin.
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful. Sometimes people can get a bit dogmatic about pruning - "It MUST be done this way". You're wise to see that there's some variation in pruning techniques and when done well, can produce a healthy and productive tree. Best of luck with your trees and thanks for the kudos on the filming work. Regards - the camera man.
Finally find a demo that is informative and of practical tips. I will set aside a devoted time to take notes and study well. Then, apply what I learn to prune my fruit trees.

Today I was exactly looking for a perfect example how to prune a apple tree. Not just pruning and cut wherever I want but mostly to understand the behavior of a apple tree after pruning. Great discription. Great knowledge. Thank you for sharing. I will keep watching your great work. My Apple tree will be happy again next years. 😁😊. Greeting from Europe.
This is why I LOVE UA-cam :) Also, I love this guy. I want him to be my neighbor! Im just an old hobbyist landscape guy who understands the basics and now I know a little bit more. THANKS!
I had my goats break out of their pen and completely "cut back" all 5 of my 2 year old peach trees...they all had insane growth this past year, from about 3-3.5 ft tall, are now over 6 ft.
The philosopher king of tree pruners. See the tree, be the tree. Thanks for the education. It will improve my technique greatly. Demonstrated for apples, but the same for peaches and plums I trust.
Thanks for the kind words. Apples and pears are very similar, but peaches are quite different in the pruning methods. Apple blossoms last for 8-10 seasons, but peaches only last one season. Here are several videos on pruning peaches: ua-cam.com/video/HIAGl10RvAQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/zP1e0xybRdM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ML-mIfI7KbY/v-deo.html

Oh man, you are very comfortable with cutting and pruning, something I have to learn. Whenever I cut, I feel like that tree is going to die and that is why I only cut a tiny piece just for the sake of pruning:). Thanks for sharing this great video!
It can be scary making your first pruning cuts. Seems like you're gonna harm the tree. But trees left unpruned are often unhealthy and produce poor fruit. Proper pruning makes for a strong, healthy tree with lots of tasty fruit.
A very good video, I gained clarity on 1-yr v. 2-yr old wood and the difference between vegetative and fruit buds. Thank you! I wish at the end the video there had been more up close shots of the pruning clips accompanied by explanations, "I'm making this cut because..." [finish the sentence]. Also a good description of what a "modified" central leader is would have been great. But overall, a very good video.
This was really helpful and filled in a lot of the "stuff' other youtubers don't mention and assume you already know or they don't know themselves. This is going to help me make better decisions on when & where to prune and when not too. Thanks!
Huge respect and admiration for the man. Finally I've found someone explaining the basics and how and why things work or not. Thank you. Liked and subscribed :)

Best pruning vid yet. I'm an older guy and tired of vids telling me I need safety glasses and gloves to prune. Most time I'm half cut and never been hit in the eye and who cares about a small scratch or cut.
I have watched dozens of pruning videos.....this is the first one that actually taught me how to prune a tree! Great video. thanks
Awesome! Thank you!

Best video EVER about this. I’ve watched so many pruning videos trying to figure out how to prune my peach trees-this is the absolutely most helpful.
Hopefully, in a year or two, I will be gushing about how you singlehandedly helped me produce stronger, better producing lemon trees!!

This taught me more in literally 5 minutes than all the other videos in wild apple tree pruning. The speaker knows HOW to teach the way teachers in late 1960s knew how to teach; refreshing.
We at the farm all admire Orin's teaching ability and deep knowledge. He's been teaching and gardening for more than 45 years, now. Love the United Farm Workers cap!

I had my goats break out of their pen and completely "cut back" all 5 of my 2 year old peach trees...they all had insane growth this past year, from about 3-3.5 ft tall, are now over 6 ft.
Maybe you could develop and new breed of "pruning goats".
Here are several videos on pruning peaches:

This guy is great. Slow and methodical, explains the how and why of cuts and training. Thanks for your knowledge.
