- Here's an in depth look at the mechanicals of the all new Nissan Altima.
The Nissan Altima has a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4 cylinder with a continuously variable transmission and AWD. The front suspension is a McPherson strut setup, while the rear uses a multi link setup.
In this review, we discuss major subsystems under the hood and underneath the vehicle including the engine, transmission, exhaust, suspension, air intake, drivetrain, brakes, steering and cooling system. A discussion on build quality and maintainability follows.

You're my favorite UA-cam car reviewers. Unlike pretty much all the other UA-cam reviewers, you don't spend half the video discussing the locations of the cup holders, or Apple Car Play or Android Auto. Heck, you don't discuss the infotainment system at all. You focus instead on strengths and weaknesses of the mechanics. And at the end, that's all that really matters.
Thanks and that's my point...let's get to the meat of what makes a car a car
Automakers fear the sharpened toothbrush
They sure do
Thanks for the rust comments, it's really really big problems with Altima. Body structure flex is a good one because accord and Camry are really stiff although with aluminum trunk and hood.
I laughed out loud when you said "When the CVT fails and you have to swap it out!" :)
It's true
me too! hahaha
It's also good that you don't have the change the timing chain for the 'life of the engine'.... though, that probably isn't very long.
I laughed pretty good at that one
Glad to hear that the Altima remains to be a good rental, period!
I don't know if it's even good at that...
I know someone with an Altima, it has 80,000 miles and the CVT was going out for the third time. Sad.
Andrew M is that good at least he’s lucky it’s not more than that
@@LunarStrike hes gone through three CVTs at 80,000 miles on the car.
@@andybub45 he's lying!
5:50 that little joke and that laugh got me so bad :D:D
Gotta couple a little jokes in there haha
I’ve had 5 Altimas with no problems.
thats why youve had 5 of them?
@@ufartface I’ve had 5 because I keep upgrading trim levels. I started with a base model S and now have a Platinum.
This is the kind of car review that I enjoy watching. Thank you for doing this.
All other UA-cam channels can be tossed out the window.
THISSSSS... is how you review a car.
In an age where they are all more or less the same inside the cabin, you show us what really matters.
Very detailed & in depth review to the professional level. Your channel is undoubtly for the pros.
Thanks I'm glad you appreciate my work!
Key Points
1:29 direct injection only, no port injectors to keep the valves clean which can lead to carbon build up
2:25 "when your CVT fails" and it will
4:23 the starter has ease of access
6:10 electric pwr steering wires dangling
7:50 steel sub-frame known to rust out over a few years
10:11 the excess body-flex
12:44 radiator up front and easily removed
These cvts are way tougher than the previous gens. I have yet to replace one due to pulley failure.
wow your reviews are so detailed unlike other youtubers that focus on how many cup holders it has, apple car play, parking sensors and all the other bs
Yeah I'm trying something real different here
Fantastic review. I've really been searching for these videos. Closest i found so far was TestDrivenTV does a few rare under the hood episodes. I have subscribed, please keep it up sir!
I really love that you let us know if the car has direct or port injection or both, im really starting to dislike cars that are DI only. This is a huge deal for me. Thank you!
Excellent information.
Thanks
I really like your car reviews ! Very informative!
Glad you enjoy them
I absolutely love this model clearly Mitsubishi helped design the engine and bay feels very Mitsubishi exact same engine I'll have to be working on in the new outlander. Great video
you are a legend. I live and breathe to see the speekar99 videos. Love you dawg.
You hit the nail on the head! Very informative and easy to understand! I thought you were going to recommend it but right up to the end you did an about face. I’m glad you were impartial and pointed out the good and the bad! Would sure like you to do a review of a Lexus ES350!
Thanks. The Altima is a car. That's all I can say....
Thank you my friend, great review, all the best.
You are welcome
Thank you for the in depth coverage. I just got a 2020 AWD so it’s nice to know more about the mechanicals. People love to dog on Nissan but I traded in my 2018 Camry for the Altima and I like this car WAY better.
Thanks for your input. What's wrong with the Camry, transmission?
speedkar99 the Camry has a lack of features for the price and this was a big reason why I decided to get rid of it. I need to enjoy the ride. The Camry needed $1k in dent repairs because the sheet metal is so thin and flimsy. I had to have several repairs on wheel bearings, tires, and the wheels themselves because it had noisy, crummy, low profile Hankook tires. The transmission took a lot of getting used to. After test driving the Altima it was a no brainier.
@@speedkar99 Why would you suspect that, it's not CVT, is it? This is a sarcastic comment pointing to a lot of BS floating around how one car is money pit and others are reliable. They are more or less same reliable, nowadays. Kilmer thinks all cars are junk. Well, he does not come into contact with not breaking cars, does he?
I am binge watching your engine bay reviews for some reason
Watching your newly released video every time is as exciting as boxing day sale.
Haha boxing day isn't as exciting as it used to be
I drove one for a few days and I like but, I hope Nissan replace the CVT with 8-speed direct shift AT with torque converter.
Thank you for the very informative review.
You are welcome. All FWD setups Nissan uses CVT
I hate how the automatic in the 2020 camry doesn't shift smooth.
your mechanical reviews are the best in youtube keep it going
do the honda accord plz
Glad you enjoy them. I don't have access to Honda cars right now
@@speedkar99 no lie, I'd like to see the 3 cylinder Mitsubishi Mirage.
Great video. You are doing reviews that reveal how car manufacturers have changed, mostly for increasing efficiency and cost reduction, over the years. Unfortunately now they are not made to last...Plastic everywhere.
Thanks I'm glad I'm covering this sector that not much else is shed light on
I just found your channel this morning. I really appreciate your mechanical reviews of vehicles and components, very informative! It's a shame that Nissan has allowed itself to become the worst Japanese automaker since they were one of the more innovative and forward-thinking brands in the early 2000s.
Thanks. Nissan has definitely taken a different direction to cars now than 20 years ago.
New subscriber is here from Jamaica!! 🇯🇲👍🏾
I really like your technical reviews. Great knowledge you have. If you could review some Honda cars it will be great. Keep going. 👍
Thanks. I'm trying to source some Honda's and Mazdas....not easy to get
My rich friend gave me his 2006 2.5 S at 96K miles. He spent more on dealership maintenance than he spent buying the car. He had no real big issues other than replacing the catalytic converter (probably because they are known for breaking down and sucking garbage back into the engine...but they didn't tell him that.) I replaced the crank and cam sensors that fail on all of them. Also the floor under the passenger seat rots out due to water getting trapped somehow. I replaced most of the front end suspension and steering parts due to a pothead ramming into the front passenger wheel. Everything was easy to get to except what you mentioned about the control arm bolt which had a little pocket where water could settle and rot out the bolt. It took a long breaker bar to get that off. 135K miles now and runs good. Not burning any oil.
Those 2.5s weren't good. The 3.5s were better but I'm that application had some other issues
Amazing details
thank you for the information.
I love these videos! Could you please please please think about doing mechanical reviews for off road SUVs? Are Toyota Land Cruisers the most durable? Are Isuzu MUXs the most crash resistant? Do Nissan Patrols' large engine bays make them the most serviceable? Are Lexus LXs as reliable as Land Crusiers? Do any of these needlessly use proprietary parts?
I'm guessing you probably don't have every car at your disposal but people like me watch these vids because they're interested in reliable, serviceable, and durable cars, and these vids might get more interest if you reviewed cars bought for those qualities, real or perceived.
Please keep up the great work!
Okay thanks for the suggestion, I know there's a market for trucks maybe I'll consider reviewing one this year!
Very informative, kool ride! 😁
Thanks!
I like that you get into the nitty-gritty details. For example you have shown us a complete tear down of a power steering pump, ac compressor, and even an odometer. If you could show us a complete tear down of a nissan cvt transmission, we could learn some of weak points and be able to repair them ourselves. If it weren't for the very unreliable cvts in nissan, I think that nissan would still be my favorite brand.
I really want to get my hands on a CVT!
Nissan Altima is one of the best cars ever made, it's sporty, stylish, elegant, and gives you enough power to cross the continents.. also, the price is very reasonable.. and the ride is smooth and direct.
Huh. Really 😔
GOOD REVIEW & GREAT CAR.
thank you, I will take your advice on this car.
I love these! Thank you!
You are welcome
U must be a mechanic.
These review videos are a great series you're doing, please don't ever stop. Hopefully it will help the people who read a glowing review for a new (domestic) car and don't understand long term reliability issues.
Thanks, glad you appreciate my efforts. Maybe I'll look into Reviewing americian brand cars next.
Simple trick for changing CVT fluid yourself without the scan tool. Measure what you drain while cold and then simply add the same volume back in new fluid that's been sitting at the same temp so it's density is equivalent.
You have to know your temperatures
simple solution: buy manual
@@Kakiharaichii they last forever
This Nissan actually looks pretty good compared to the competition. There is a multi link rear suspension and a lot of the control arm and suspension parts are made of aluminium. Theres a strut tower and designed in a way that servicing is still easy. The main problem with Jatco CVTs also seem to have some extra cooling allowance with the dedicated cooler and its own smaller CVT condensor.
Excellent review. I'm a retired diyer. Looking on getting a low mileage used 4runner limited no rush
Yeah go for it!
Look forward to seeing you review the new Accord (and hybrid)!
Someday I'll get Honda cars. All I'm doing now is collecting Honda engines (see my past videos and story posts) lol
Had 2 Nissan cars. Máxima 2001 and Juke 2015. Yes, they cheap out, like all, in certain things, but no issues with either.
Good to year. The old Maxima will probably last you along time
@@speedkar99 Yes 2003 and earlier.
Great video
Thanks
Love the content bro, maybe you could give the cars a Doug-score like speedcar-score. Thank you.
Or maybe we can universalize the Doug score so every reviewer can use it.
@@speedkar99 Thinking like an engineer! Respect. :)
Dougscore!? The completely arbitrary number taken out of the blue by some dude who is not even a mechanic?
@@gustavlicht9620 But we got ourselves an engineer here! I just would like to see how he is comparing different cars in numbers, or scores.
Hey, nice video. Very quick and informative. Nissan makes some cool lookin vehicles. Just like my 1992 Nissan terrano. 2.7L turbo diesel 4*4. How about a review on a Lincoln MKT. Not much out there on my 2011 Lincoln 3.7L but pretty happy with it.
MKT lol...Ford fusion?
Excellent! 👍 This is a review for people who may actually tackle some maintenance & repair items themselves. Typically, I'll watch a review but then research many of the "inner" workings (that I think are important) which you've outlined here.
PS - but the Accord or Camry, stay away from Nissan.
Thanks. I hope to have more reviews when emergency orders ease up
your local transmission shop will be happy to rebuild your Nissan's CVT XD
They don't rebuild. The repair manual doesn't give you specs for the CVT. Everything is replaced.
@@speedkar99 fuck a repair manual I no a Russian who can rebuild a cvt with his eye close
@@djoneshot8925 ivan even bought a new one
speedkar99 for the last year or so mr transmission up here in Canada is an authorized shop to rebuild cvts
When a cvt fails, manual swapping it takes so much unreasonable love and dedication
Can confirm
Great video, This Nissan checks all the boxes feature wise and with its great looks to deceive unknowing possible customers. A lack of good engineering and low build quality reminds me that a Nissan is not a Toyota or a Honda.
It sure does check alot of boxes when new. Time will tell if it'll hold up, the older ones didn't do as well.
Toyota??? Have you been in a sienna lately or even the Camry? Nothing really special about them lol. Doors also has the worst sound in the segment.
its about renault partnership
👍 nice work done
Thanks
Idea, an overview, a debriefing on what you have found globally with all the manufacturers. Your top recommended list and your top to avoid list.
All good points. Thanks
Lovely video. Your comments are spot on. Personally I am a fan of German cars but they lack the reliability of Toyota and Honda but driving dynamics are way better. It's a trade off between the two. Greetings from Auckland.
Definitely a trade off .... You lease German but buy Japanese
You're a master of the english language sir!
Thanks....I am no master...just Canadian
At 14:20 i died when he said "i like how nissan provide that plastic to hold ur tools cause they know u are gonna be working on that car" 🤣
thanks good video
That is a real car review
What exactly surprised you in this video, not to degrade it or anything, that a car has pipes, wires, hoses and components made of metal or plastic mounted in similar positions, just like any other car?
Sad! Nissan quality has gone down since Renault!
That's what mechanic Scotty Kilmer said. I wonder if Nissan still engineers their own vehicles.
🚗💨💨💨⚡
I'm real Hoping they can make a comeback like Hyundai
@@rkgsd He also said he's quitting because he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer, but he's ok.
@@speedkar99 They should go back to being Datsun.
A deep dive with a OBD scanner analysis. If you could partner with a thinkcar like OBD manufactue for a live demonstration.
Honestly they're so easy to work on biggest problem is the CVT transmission I wish Nissan wouldn't use it
not fair, all civic accord with 1.5t and corolla has cvt just like nissan, either it's not as bad as ppl think or really cost effective
@@zhanggodfather8053 The difference is who makes the CVTs. CVTs used in Toyotas and new Subarus are made by Aisin, Honda CVTs are made by Honda, and Nissan CVTs are made by JATCO. JATCO doesn't supply reliable CVTs, but Honda and Aisin make reliable CVTs.
@@Blank00 yeah but they are still cvts for example if you had a bad experience with Mac and cheese when your grandma made it but when your mom made it you loved it there are a ton of different factors that go into it , but it does not mean the food is bad you just dont like it
@@hannahstewart-green8062 Umm, what?
I love your reviews. A car can have all of the features in the world, but if its a hard-to-work-on unreliable piece of junk, I dont want it.
Thanks for the love. I'm working on some more reviews soon!
look at ford engines with the timing chains at the firewall- pull the engine? engineering disaster
Your a BEAST!!!!!
It was great illustrations in my humble opinion it is 50/50 car
Agreed. It's just a car.... nothing outstanding
Wow, the body flex was the final nail in the coffin right there. I thought this car would be somewhat better but one jack stand managed to screw up the alignment that badly is unacceptable.
Yeah the only other car I had body flex was my 99 Toyota Solara with frameless doors. This was embarrassing
You are my favorite in UA-cam can you make a video on Toyota sienna
I would love to see your review of cars coming out of China 😁👍
We have yet to see them here in Canada
There's Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus. They're owned by a Chinese company called Geely
It would be interesting to see an expensive brand given same look over. Merc, BMW, AUDI.
Excellent information from your channel.
Can you please explain what actually vaccum or vaccum pressure in automotive
Thanks. Vacuum is air with pressure lower than atmospheric. The low pressure is formed when the piston moves down sucking air into the engine, creating vacuum in the intake manifold.
@@speedkar99Thanks a lot for your information
vacuum is sucking or negative pressure- positive pressure is blowing
Can you please make video of 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 liter cvt
That suspension setup is the exact same as my 2008 Altima had. It lasted almost 300k km before I needed ball joints.
You're right , the only change electric everything direct injection , front suspension very bad
Ball joints on McPherson strut suspension don't wear very fast on any vehicle because they are not loaded ball joints.
Do the Mercedes gl450 2013 and up I would love to see how those are holding up
Benz...wow
Do reviews on Honda vehicles (Accord, Civic, etc)
I gotta get my hands on Honda vehicles
Honestly, looks pretty good? Other than the transmission it you stick with the base engine it's probably going to be fine and I think transmission issues have been improving gradually since 2014 or so.
Unfortunately we only get the 2.5L 4 cylinder and AWD in Canada. No FWD and no turbo 4
Your work is superb, especially for those of us who plan to work on our own cars. Just some well intentioned feedback: maybe slow down a bit? Savagegeese has very a very good pace in his videos... Almost like you are having a conversation
If you can't tell a pipe from a wire, better do not work on cars.
@@walkbase uh?
@@supersabrosinho With all the respect, the video, you're so fascinated by, basically tells you this: this is a pipe and connects cat converter to a muffler; that is another, smaller pipe and it connects the master cylinder to the caliper, this is a hose and it goes from the radiator to the engine block, and this is a wire connecting a sensor to a controller, and that is a control arm, it holds wheel in place. If you cannot see it by yourself, or are not in a habit of reading service manuals, better do not work on cars. Cars look more or less the same, unless it is a Tesla.
@@walkbase pretty sure you are replying to the wrong person. I've replaced control arms, clutches, cats, and currently replacing the piston rings in my Acura 3.7. I'm no ASME master mech but I definitely know my way around the engine bay and electricals. Maybe read the post you are replying to next time? Dunno just FYI
I wish you would do some Nissan trucks I had a titan and now a frontier and love them both extremely reliable and easy to work on. I have 50,000 miles on a frontier right now 2017. Only fluid draining feels and not one single issue. I don’t like this Ultima it looks good and looks bad at the same time.
The trucks sure are ancient. Would be good to see the difference between those and Toyota trucks
lol I really like how the toothbrush got in the engine bay and fell all the way down, sounded like it didn't make it to the ground?
That last comment of yours though lmao
That plug on the side of the trans isn't the fill plug. It's for inspection. The trans is filled from the charge tube "dip stick" then set with the check plug by the converter inspection port.

What do you think about electric vehicles and Tesla? ... Your videos are so perfect in every way please keep doing what you are doing.
Thanks. I have never experienced a Tesla.
Please please please please do a mechanical review on the 2016-2018 Hyundai Tucson with the 1.6Turbo!
Ok
2m30s Hook for the engine needs to be pulled "When" the CVT fails, didn't say "if" . I have a 2015 Rogue and the CVT had to be replaced at 87k miles. Under warranty thankfully. Other than CVT its been a good vehicle, and man those seats are comfortable. I am considering an AWD Altima next (will buy extended warranty of course)
See my CVT fail video for more on that
More more more pls

They also offer a turbo AWD Altima but AWD lacks power. The FWD had more power when launching of a stand still.
Any reviews for new Mazda 6 or CX-5 on the horizon?
Maybe a CX5 or a 3. I need to do research
Very comfy car
Please do a Nissan Sentra.
If you have one keep changing the CVT fluid every 30-40k with proper fluid and easy on the acceleration if you want trans to last.
I floor my car everyday. I'm at 249k miles on my 16 altima. It's probably better if you drive it easy but that's not necessarily true. You can still have fun sometime if you want without the trans breaking. My point is me lol...
@@occckid123 Have you had any CVT issues like it's been replaced 4x's, but seriously have you changed fluid? Maybe the 16 has been beefed up but that's good to hear it's not failed with 249k on it, you drove about 85k per year, that's a lot! I see your channel and the milage throughout time, so no fooling.

DSG/DCT is fine, or even at least standard torque converter auto feels more engaging than a CVT.
But nothing beats the feel of a manual transmission.
Yeah I didn't like the feeling of this CVT
You should do the Nissan Versa to see the differences and how much more simple it is compared to the Altima.
Yes I'd like to see the new 2020 versa
If this car had the GTR R35's power plant this basically would be a four door GTR. Due to the way it looks side by side with a GTR you'll get the picture.
