The 2019 Nissan Qashqai comes with a 2.0L direct injected 4 cylinder engine and a CVT transmission. The model shown here is the AWD model. In this video, we take a look at the air intake, fuel delivery, engine layout, valve train, drivetrain, transmission, driveline, suspension, frame, brakes, steering and cooling systems on the Nissan Qashqai. We also take a look at how easy it would be to maintain this vehicle if you were to purchase one down the road.
Overall the Qashqai is an average entry into the small cross-over segment. From a mechanical perspective, the engine and transmission accessibility could be improved, as well as the aging underlying architecture underneath the body.

I'd love a diesel mechanical review!
The Cmf platform is not old
"dip stick sold separately" lol
Lmao ain't that the truth
What were they thinking? That is some cheap shot
I suspect the dip stick is a dealer only item, too.
They don’t want you checking the transmission oil, so it fails even earlier and you have to either get a new vehicle or bring it in for expensive repairs
@@bosccoh considering their backlog of their CVTs I think I will take my chances working on it
7:02 Dipstick sold separately! Strike 3.
Strike 1: air filter is buried in "secret" location (not a big deal, but still...)
Strike 2: changing the alternator requires more of the car to be disassembled than changing the AC pump.
3 strikes that put another car in our junk yards as fast possible.
Yeah I'm not really liking the under hood layout
Well, Nissan been doing that since the early 2000, ppl still buying it as long as they are cheaper ( than other better cars)
I love my Nissan rouge sport 2020 ! I drive Uber with it and put 5000miles per month . No issues and I definitely change oil every month !
Strike 4: Rusts fast
Based on that under hood layout it looks like Renault had a little too much influence in the design of this platform and power train.
Yep. The way the ECU is bolted to the battery tray, the air filter location, the way the brake master cylinder is buried behind the air filter (albeit Nissan have extended the brake fluid reservoir cap upwards which is a bit more sensible), the single piece undertray... It's all pure Renault! :) The expansion tank cap seems to be identical to Renault, and the crossflow radiator seems typical Renault too.
it is a Renault. the engine is the same as the kaptur and koleos
i just wanna say your videos are amazing and you provide so much knowledge with each of them. thanks for making all of these
Sir, you deserve a lot more subscribers. Your strong knowledge of cars, simple and effective presentation is perfect. Even the toothbrush is endearing!
Thoroughly enjoyable and detailed fun review.
Thank you so much for your mechanical reviews! You point out not only the strong and weak points of a car, but also how hard/easy it is to replace components when they wear down. Some people may say "ilL jUsT hAvE mY meChaNic dO iT" but little do they realize it will take much more time to repair something if a component is hard to work on, thus a much more expensive bill at the end of the day. Cheers from the West Coast of Canada, Sir!
What I love about these videos is they are going to have a whole 2nd life once these vehicles are 10-20 yrs old** and people who like wrenching on cars themselves can check here to see if that's a used vehicle they want to deal with.
**j/k there will be no 20 yr old Nissan CVT vehicles.
They won't be around in that time frame based on the terrible design and manufacturing,
Mines is
I have qashqai since 2010 model 2009 , i still keep this car very strong and reliable and never have issues with CVT its great in fuel consumption, it lives long time especially i change its fluid regularly as in its manual

Very informative as usual. Well done paz y salud
Thanks
I rented a Qashqai and the engine was not under powered. The backup camera was all but useless at night! Excellent review.
Thanks. I found it very slow. But I'm used to V6 cars.
Damn man! You sure are unique! All that knowledge!
It is started to rust in factory...
Very excited to hear your reviews. Better than Pro. Please maintain your style and neutral.
Thanks I'm glad you appreciate my work
Direct Injection and only 141HP? How did they manage that 😂
Ikr the Corolla SE/XSE make 170hp out of their 2.0L.
@@trent7080 Honda R20A3's are also detuned, and have balancers. Still puts out 160, with port injection and SOHC. Renault just builds crap engines.
141 is the output of a SOHC 1.8L Honda engine that has PI.

looks very different to my 2019 Qashqai for the NZ/AUS market. quite amazed at the difference they have for different markets.
Love these mechanical overviews! Definitely some sketchy engineering and materials choices here, especially whatever pot metal they apparently make the exhaust out of. Makes me question just how long one of these would last before it either rusts out or the CVT fails and the vehicle just gets scrapped.
Yeah the exhaust looks sad... imagine in 5 years
ah you just automatically got my like. i thought you will never review old nissan line up. Would love to see a review for qasqhai older brother, xtrail t31. tia
Can I ask where the fuel filter is? Is it inside the fuel pump? This car looks to have a good framework with a full metal subframes and metal radiator support.
Love to watch your review. Can you review mercedes and bmw next time compare with Japanese vehicles thx
good job bro
I'd love to see you do some installs as well
I've done repair /install videos

My cars don't need repairs anymore so I work on other stuff haha
well i have qashqai 2009 made by UK 2.0L and still working very well without any CVT problems its now cut 122k kilo meters i like too mush , i planning to buy the new xtrial 2021
Two questions.
Why does the Qashqai take so long to heat up?
Why do the windows fog up?
Nissan CVT making me think twice on buying one
Sad
Why bother to think about that? Waste of brain cell
Darn, i have the Nissan Xtrail from Japan. I hope the CVT transmission last.
i had one of them paired with renault dci 1.6 diesel 130 hp.that jatco brand cvt is the worst cvt tranmission compared to others sold in our country, the car goes like 90-100 hp car including some failures.fyi ,i drove the same car with manual transmission ,it flies like a rocket!
how does the air get to the intake tube if when the hood is closed it is blocking it ??
I like the ending
Thanks
I have the 2017 US version. It'll be 7yrs old. No major issues. Only 50k miles. Although I'm not too worried about changing s-plugs only because they'll only be changed a few times during the life of it, I have noticed the rust issue underneath with the suspension. Has a good amount of rot in some spots :( I think Mitsubishis also have this issue. Other than that, the car's been great for me. The cvt felt jolty within the first 20k, but it feels more smoothed out as it's aged. I hope it keeps up.
My brothers 2011 Nissan Versa has a 4-Speed automatic transmission and its really reliable even after 300K Kilometers even though things are staring to fall apart. Still runs
Um, you sure it's not a CVT?
Versa have a lower failure rate, as most 2.5 CVT are the problems are.
Apparently the Versa "automatic" is a CVT, but maybe the lower torque of the Versa puts less stress on it.
@@JoeUrbanYYC I guess, but other than that, it still a very poor quality car.
He's on the ball the first Canadian Versa was available with both 4-speed (lower trim) and CVT (upper trims.)
Wow, most basic maintenance require first remove a bunch of covers and shields... I am glad drivers of this vehicle are not required to enter the vehicle from the tailgate... 😁
Yeah I hate that. Plus those clips go missing and break
What’ are your final thoughts on the rogue sport? Reliable or not?
If you change the CVT fluid every 30,000
First time I witnessed him dropping his tooth brush
Always do at the end the video
NB: His brothers toothbrush
i think nissan cvt are made by jacto, rigth?...i´d like to know what do you think about subaru cvt
personally, i dont like at all whats nissan have done since union with renault...but before that they used to make good cars.
Can you do the Honda 1.5 and 2.0 turbo cars?
I love my 2020 sports rouge!!!
Any issues?
@@speedkar99 Nothing so far !! I drive for Uber and I put like 5000 miles per month . I do change oil every month !
Sports?
I own a Nissan X-Trail T30 which uses QR20DE (predecessor of MR20DD in this video) and it's so much easier to work on! Every sort of essential things like changing spark plugs and air filter is very accessible unlike this car.
I hope they use good old QR20DE layout for air intakes.
Did they fix the Tailgate/boot lid handle issue? Had a Dualis so maybe four or so years difference from this model. The tailgate handle is secured by clips. These break after a bit of force and are hard to replace. Solution is to never actually use the handle and let the boot open by itself. Nissan never backed down from claiming it wasn't a design fault in Australia. Some other territories got cheap replacements eg less than $250 USD.
I didn't realize that was an isshe, seems like an oversight there
Hw does this compare to other manufacturer's (Japanese and non Japanese)? Is Nissan really sub par?
Yeah I'd say it's average build wearing. Same as a Hyundai or something
Damn, so much rust already.
And only a year on the road
Winter climates + salt on roads = that
Galvanized ?
its self recycling
Pay full price at the touchless gas bar wash and get bottom blaster.
I have one of these cars, and its not too bad. Car is relatively reliable. Change the cvt fluid every 30k miles or less and you should be fine. You should be able to fill it through the dipstick tube and I've heard they have a plug on the side of the trans where you can fill it like a differential.
It was.easy , they even have a transmission drain plug, Just drain out the and fill the same amount. It was easier than changing the oil.No dipstick is retarded though
I love these walkthroughs. It really helps makes me glad that I gave up being a full time mechanic. What a lot of piss farting around to get to stuff for maintenance. Then again, the old 300ZX was a nightmare to get to the v6 spark plugs. Give me an old style v8 any day. rear wheel drive.
At least the 300zx was a cool car, that level of effort for an econo car though? No thanks.
Can you fill cvt oil from the dip stic not from down the car?
Perhaps
Yes
My Sentra has same engine from 2007 but wants 5w30 and comes with a dipstick. Only one engine mount and traditional intake design. No vvti I'm pretty sure. At 150k I change the cvt atf every 30k and added a oil cooler and running strong
Great info.
Why does it take so long* to heat up in the winter.
I had a Ford Escape previously and you had to take your coat off.
Why do the windows fog up so easily in this car.
They also want $500.00 for a DEFA block heater.
Anything special about these.
My mom's 2013 Nissan Altima's CVT failed after 50K miles (after the warranty expired)
Typical
Strange, I done 150000 and still good. I change CVT oil every 60000 as they said in book.
7:14 how does it shift gears when there are no gears?
It changes the ratio
I meant it shifts what mode you are in, park, reverse, neutral etc

What's your brother's weekly usage on toothbrushes? Seems you have plenty of them....
One per video
And I post once a week
My brother has one and him and his family love it. He keeps it well maintained. However, I wouldn't volunteer to do work on it as I do on his other cars. I may do brakes, oils and such but suspension? That seems too complicated for a DIY.
I would never buy one but still find these videos entertaining

It's average. Like a Hyundai
Can’t u just fill the CVt transmission through the dipstick?
I wish, but you still have to pull the plug to drain excess

Thanks for modifying ...
Too much RUST for only 1 year old vehicle ...
Watching this video reminded me of why I’d never buy a Nissan!
Sad
So i was thinking of a 2017 price Qashqai, ford kuga or seat ateca, this vid rules out the Qashqai, ateca is winning at the moment.
Good ole Nissan 😏
I live in the northeastern U.S., so corrosion is a major concern of mine with regard to vehicles. Interestingly, there is so much on the Interwebs about how auto manufacturers use blah, blah, blah processes and zinc coatings that are, "so much better than autos of the past, woo, woo." Yet, this Nissan is a year or two old and is starting to rust. I have watched similar videos about 1 or 2 year old Jeep Wrangler frames starting to rust. I see A LOT of late model Ford, GM, and Chrysler trucks with spots. At $20, $30, $40, $50,000+ that is criminal!
That being typed, I have a 2007 Nissan Altima with CVT transmission that has 165,000 trouble-free miles on it. Zero rust on the body (don't know what the undercarriage looks like), and the engine hums like an old German sewing machine. Also, have a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder, which is THE best of the 6 vehicles I've owned in my life.
Not an engineer, however, it's starting to look to me like the overwhelming majority of vehicles made since about 2015 (with the exception of most Toyotas and Hondas) are sub-par (especially relative to their price points). I do NOT give a damn about the diameter of the cupholders, the size of the "infotainment" screen, heated steering wheels, or the number of USB ports. I am only interested in trucks that are built rock solid, can be worked on easily, use metal engine components (where it's smart...............like high heat areas), and have well proven engine and transmission designs and a minimum of computers. This philosophy (and diligent preventative maintenance) have served me very well. Zero engine or transmission issues in 30+ years of driving.
I used to own a 2006 Ford Mondeo that had a simple Mazda-designed 2.0 DOHC I4 engine without variable timing or direct injection and it had 145 hp which is 4 hp more than this crap. Unbelievable
Lol😂😂😂😂
Yeah this car is slow!
Using yr brothers tooth brush gives +10 skills
Pls do a Suzuki
These are very much focused to the European market that's why it has a more complex design than the regular Rogue. I'm not sure why they do that.
Yeah they were an international vehicle since 2013 and Nissan brought it to north America
@@speedkar99 Just finished the video and in my country we get the UK made one and it does have an electronic parking brake and wheel bolts instead of nuts.
"reveals a couple of relays but there's no fuses in here" as he's pointing at 4 or 5 fuse links...
I have wanted to know the pronunciation of this Nissan for years. Cash-Kay, not quash-chi like squash-chi. This has been driving me nuts for years. Thank you
And that's why they called it the Rogue Sport in the US
It's Cash-keye, as in "eye".
I was working in the UK confused for 6 months😁... Thanks for the lesson.
Its handle in the UK is "cash-cow".
Was this car in a flood?
I had this vehicle for two years with 41,000 km and its was the worst vehicle i have ever had... was in the shop for warranty work way more times then i can count on two hands and at 17,000 km both front struts needed replacement under warranty and to cut right to the chase washout a entire laundry list of all the warranty work i had.. the CVT was on its way out on year almost 3 of having it as my last straw. I have since traded it in as it was turning into a nightmare as it was right from the start even at 8,000 km I was having a long crank over issue with a stalling issue. Never EVER ANOTHER NISSAN!
Wow! Good to hear from someone who owned one. I guess Nissan has some cleaning up to do
We also own one from 2017 with over 60k miles on it, althogh I have never had any issues with it, has never needed a service besides the anual ones and oil changes, so I am really happy with it.
@@claudiubucholzer4103 you just got Luckey.. 🤷

I don't like it compared to the past cars your reviewed. It seems a little bit more complicated without any befit for it being that way.
The air intake setup is a bit funky. The rest of it is the same as many other new cars.
@@speedkar99 Yeah I don't like that intake. If it was that complicated but came with a turbo I would be less picky. Thank you for your video.
“Discard if dropped” the Nissan way!
One 2016 sentra with 110k miles, 1 2018 altima with just over 40k miles and one 2014 altima with 118k miles were traded in bkoz of Nissan marvelous CVT , with heavy loses and two corollas and one civic was welcomed in the family. RIP nissan...we are done with you.
Sorry to hear that but I guess the CVTs are really bad
I think its the quality issue bkoz toyota is using it since their fist gen of prius ... and even in bigger models of nissan CVTs hold themselves pretty good but in their entry level vehicles they just cheap out on quality and materials.Love your videos man ... esp this new flavore of reviewing new models ....👏🏽✨👍👊🏼... keep it up 👍
Absolutely hate the air intake design with it blocking everything below and how long of a path it is. How do you jump the car? Electronics under the hood aren’t a big deal. Most electronics are potted or conformal coated so they could be underwater if you want. Also the electronics are in a cast aluminum case so you will likely be dead if the module gets crushed.
It is Japanese, but the Renault inspiration is visible.
This is a Nissan platform though. Renault uses it not the other way around. Nissan uses the Clio for the Micra.
@@SDav21 Nissan does all the works Renault gains the laurels for it. That was the intent.
And all paired with Renault "reliability"...
