Wow, this was the best explanation of this concept I've ever heard! I've called Denon, Polk and SVS. None of them were able to come close to this. In fact, I was more confused after I called. SVS suggested setting it to LFE while Denon suggested LFE+Main, but I didn't know WHY. I didn't know that setting it to LFE+Main negates the Small/Large and Crossover settings. Thank you!

SVS was right. For 99% of users LFE with small speakers selected and a crossover on each channel is the ideal setting.

Good video and you're doing a great job of demystifying home theatre. I have Tannoy Revolution DC6T's for fronts and for ages was never very happy with them. They weren't producing much sound and seemed insipid and struggled to cope. I have a budget Denon AVR and thought I needed an upgrade. Recently I changed my speaker setting from Small to Large, going against what most 'experts' recommend. Holy smoke: this changed everything! I'm getting much better imaging and sound stage and starting to enjoy movies all over again! I am using LFE+Main, but my advice to anyone is - experiment. Sound is a personal thing and it depends on the room and the equipment. So don't take anyone's word for it, pick a dynamic scene you're familiar with and watch it over again at different settings (Large vs small speaker and LFE + Main vs LFE).

Thanks K., Yamaha receiver set to LFE...Front (main) speakers set to small. Crossover set at 60hz. Polk Speaker set (7) + 1 sub = 7.1 setup. I then ran the Ypao to calibrate and balance the speakers placement. OMG - this changed the ratio of bass and highs because the center channel is standing out like I wanted. The surround backs are playing louder for more of the effect in certain settings. Even listening to the radio sounds totally different (better). Excellent tutorial, you helped change my listening experience. I had my system set too loud for the space. Most appreciated - I now have better control over the bass output because of the sub volume...🤔😊

Good explanation, but to be clear, when I set my receiver to "subwoofer+" it does NOT send the same signal to the subwoofers as it does to the mains. It actually sends the LFE signal and the LOW frequencies of the left and right channels below whatever I set the low pass filter to regardless of whether I set the mains to large or small.

The AVR info is quite clear. What is still a little confusing is which input of the sub to use, the LFE or the “Sub” input. Most higher end subs give you the option, but the suggestions are not always clear, and sometimes contradictory between brands. For example I have both old and current RELS and it is suggested that both the low level and the LFE can be used at the same time. This always seems weird and seems to add gain. Suggestions to this detail of the chain? BTW also using Denon on one of the systems.

It's a bit confusing when you say that with the LFE+Main setting, the subwoofer will play all the frequencies that the main speakers are playing. That makes it sound as if the subs will play up to 20,000Hz or whatever. Surely you mean that the subs will play the main sound, but only whatever falls below the crossover, with some overlap of course?

    • @Kpaceguy
      @Kpaceguy  2 роки тому

Well the sub itself has its own frequency cut off built in to the amp. That's the only thing stopping it from playing very high. So the sub will play as high as it's capable of which typically is 200-250hz with overlap every single frequency in lfe+main regardless the crossover. The crossover only works on the speakers themselves in lfe + main

Hey man, great vid! Refresing to hear someone say that setting it to LFE + Main can be the way to go. Most sound people always say to just put it on LFE, 120hz and that's it.
I would love to know what's your opinion on setting the LPF for LFE at 80hz instead of 120hz. Many sound experts say to put it on 120hz, but I once saw this vid on Audioholics and they had Anthony Grimani as a guest and he said (and I saw that more other experts said it as well) that they didn't agree with that and that they always set the setting to 80 or 90hz. Because it's not a hard cut-off and setting it too high can introduce problems in your bass. And also he said that LFE rarely goes over 80hz anyway. Personalty, I'm split. Sometimes 120hz sounds better, but 80 also sounds great a lot of times and fixes a lot of issues.
The vid he said it in was called: ''Get the Best Bass for Your Home Theater'' (I can't remember what part it was).

You don't need to set 80hz crossover with good speakers that's an old way of thinking. It's more immersive when you let those towers go down to what they are capable of. you are wrong at the aend - if you have small satellites you want #lfe only so you domn t get distorsiom 0 if you have huge speaker satelites you have both options available fdepending how you like you basse - also every speaker has a resonace frecvency tranfered to the room so no speaker sounds the same in every room hence you can select wahat sounds nicer to you - if it s a big room i m thinking less bass more mid and tweet so you don t get reverb and go more power in sattelites so lft only etc,,,, it s more complex that you explained here

LFE + Main is really only great for Pure Direct music, because pure direct disables bass management and there's no way to get bass out of the subs in stereo music. LFE + Main allows this to happen in direct and pure direct, but it will not be accurate.
After fully calibrating my system, LFE + Main actually loses bass, it cancels certain frequencies out, I've found, even after time alignment. I use a crossover of 60hz, all speakers small, and that's the smoothest bass response I have gotten. 80hz was not as good.
TLDR: LFE is best, the crossover is based on your speakers and room, LFE + Main is only good for pure direct IMO.

Love your videos, and I'm a faithful subscriber but your understanding of this topic is a bit off. For most users, especially those with smaller speakers, LFE with small speaker settings will be the optimal setting with a 80-100hz crossover. Below is a detailed explanation given by Ed Mullen of SVS.
“Here is the best way to understand Small/Large , LFE/LFE+Main and the LPF for LFE.
Small applies a 12 dB/octave high pass to the speaker at the selected crossover frequency.
Small sends a duplicate signal to the subwoofer and applies a 24 dB/octave low pass to the subwoofer at the selected crossover frequency.
LFE means the subwoofer gets the LFE channel and redirected bass from any channels set to Small.
Large sends that channel a full-range signal. This is also known as ‘Full Band’.
LFE+Main sends a duplicate signal to the subwoofer for any channel set to Large and applies a 24 dB/octave low pass to the subwoofer at the selected ‘crossover’ frequency1.
When set to LFE+Main, the subwoofer still gets the LFE channel and redirected bass from any other channels still set to Small.
1 Note if the mains are set to Large and the subwoofer mode is set to LFE, there is no crossover selection available for the mains. If the mains are set to Large and LFE+Main is selected, then the ‘crossover’ selection becomes available for the mains. This really isn’t a true ‘crossover’ at all, because the mains are still being sent a full-range signal. What the ‘crossover’ becomes when LFE+Main is selected is the low pass filter setting for the duplicate signal being sent to the subwoofer. In this sense, the user can select the amount of ‘overlap’ between the mains and the subwoofer.
This distinction is not well understood by most enthusiasts, nor is it well communicated by the AVR GUI menu. It suggests or implies a crossover is still being applied to the mains when they are set to Large, when in reality that is not the case.
The LPF for LFE is the low pass filter setting for the LFE channel. Normally this is set to 120 Hz, since that is typically the upper limit used by DVD mixing engineers.”

So no one talks about what the Sub crossover should be set at? so if you have your setup set to small speakers and crossovers set to 80hz everything below 80hz goto the sub but wouldnt your sub need its crossover set to 80hz to receive the higher hz base freq. Most subs inc mine is set to like 45hz wouldnt 80hz make the sub muffled??

    • @Kpaceguy

I have tons of videos about crossover. Yes you still need your sub crossover to at least match the speakers otherwise that information gets sent, but not reproduced
