LFE+Main Subwoofer Mode Explained

  • I find there is quite a bit of confusion regarding the LFE+Main setting in Denon and Marantz AV receivers. Some think it duplicates LFE from the subwoofer into the towers - but it doesn't do that. So, what exactly does LFE+Main do, and should you use it? Let's discuss.

Thank you for this!! I've just got into a high end AVR system. Currently running a Marantz Cinema 50, with Polk Reserve R700/R400 front and centre, and two SVS SB-1000 Pro subs. When listening to stereo music I was wondering why I was not getting any "extra" bass as the towers seemed to be doing most of the work. But this explanation made it all clear to me, thank you! Now I can go back and tinker some more!

Lucky you getting a set of R700's.
Im hoping i see them in stock in the near future as id really like to upgrade from my 30+ year old Klipsch KG 5.2s.
Every review ive seen on the R700's have been nothing short of stellar. Though id really like to hear them in person. Unfortunately I live in northern Maine and to my knowledge, no place in Maine has a listening room set up with them.

@@markvogeler7564 I have to admit that I hadn't realised how in demand these speakers are, even I ordered them back in December. It did, however, take a month for them to be ordered in from Sound United and then delivered. You're right, the reviews are all nothing but positive, and the sound, to me also, fully justified the cost. I am hoping to improve upon what the Marantz can give them by eventually getting two monoblocks to power them.

@PIPERBOYWILLIAMS you can go to the option=2 channel. And set it for 2 channel listening, main+Lfe, change fronts to large, that'll automatically be set for u when you choose 2 channel playback. Have it set definitely in the area he showed so it's back to small when listening to anything other then 2 channel playback.

    Thank you for explaining this.
Ive been recently setting up a system in my new home using some new and some older components.
    Marantz 6006 reciever
    Marantz 7055 amp
    Klipsch KG 5.2 main towers
    Klipsch R-120SW sub.
Though the KG's are very dated and still look and sound like new (new bass drivers several years back after one voice coil smoked) ive struggled to get the sound I had hoped. Being very new to Marantz products, ive been trying to learn the settings with very little information available as that reciever is a bit dated as well.
I did speak with a tech at Marantz and they told me to set it to LFE and the main speakers to small. Which I did. Prior to the new amp i received last week. Though with the added power of the new amp, i believe i set the mains to large and have since struggled to get low frequencies to not sound mushy.
I suspect this having my KG's set to large and them playing full range is why its mushy.
Ive also had to turn my sub power way way down in order to not have a huge peak between 40 and 100hz.
Again, now this is all starting to make sense now so tonight ill have a far better direction on what to change and most importantly - why.
    Thank you again.
    Mark

I am a newbie trying to learn. My current set up is 2.0, but I want to change to 2.1.
My receiver (Yamaha R-N602) does not have a bass management menu). The spec says the subwoofer pre out cuts off at 90Hz. The Yamaha website confirms that the speaker terminals get the full signal. Can you explain how this is different from the LFE plus main situation you describe in your video? In other words, why are my bookshelf speakers not crapping their pants?
Also, what do you think of the idea of connecting a subwoofer to the speaker terminals in preference to the subwoofer pre out (as advocated by the likes of Paul McGowan PS Audio)?

Great video. Very informative. Appreciate the detailed explanation.
Quick question, what's the rationale of setting the LPF for LFE at 120 Hz and how would varying this impact the sound output of the Sub and/or speakers.
I am using a Denon AVR with Definitive Technology Prosub 600 (5.1 set up).
    Thanks in advance.

    • @steadychaosproductions3376
      @steadychaosproductions3376  Рік тому +2

The dedicated low frequency effects in a movie (the .1 in a 5.1 audio configuration) maxes out at 120Hz - that how its encoded.
Such is why the LPF for your sub should be at 120Hz or below. There is literally no encoded LFE information above 120Hz for your subwoofer to play. Also, if you set your subs LFF above 120Hz, youre adding unintended bass and risk localizing your sub.

  • @KingMierda
    @KingMierda Рік тому

Very good clarifying explanation! I also have my speakers set to Large because they look large to me, I didn’t know it messed them up like this.
My 5.1 Bose system I have them setup as small of course because they are small but my B&W are Large so that’s why I set them up as large.
Frankly the manual doesn’t really explain this at all and this is a very confusing subject and a lot of trial and error.
This is the reason most people nowadays just buy a soundbar, it’s fast and simple and sounds good.
The whole industry needs to simplify the system.

Yes, with LFE+Main, your subs will play low frequencies from your speakers set to small below the crossover. If set you set your speakers to large with a crossover, then all the speakers would play every frequency and your subs would also duplicate said frequencies below the set crossover.

I have Klipsch Cornwall II Speakers for my Front Land R. I bought a Marantz SR5015 last year and as I love it for 5.2 movie watching I have played with it for HOURS trying to get a great sound for 2 channel audio listening with not much luck. I eventually bought an amp switch and when I want to listen to music (which is most of the time) I just switch back to my old Pioneer SX 1050. The Marantz doesn't sound bad but its night and day as far as lacking that punch and deep bass and fullness from the speakers that my old 2 channel receiver gives them. I tried LFE+Main and just LFE. Ive messed with crossovers and its a little better but I wish I could just find a way to get the Marantz to just send full range to them and the ability to play with the bass and treble like the old receiver. Ive tried direct and puredirect but theres just not much low end when I do this. Are the newer receivers just not the same when it comes to music or am I just not setting it up correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, My menu looks just like the Denon in this video or at least very close I think. Just as a side note I don't even run a sub when using the old receiver and it walks all over the newer Marantz even without one. Im so lost :)

That may be the case with Marantz and Denon but with the Yamaha Advantage AVR's & AVP's that's not the case in my 2 systems ( both Yamaha's). For those of you who have one, and want your large speakers to still play bass here's what you can do:
    1. In the Speaker settings select Small then change the hz to the minimum you want your speakers to be. ex. 40hz
    2. Then go back and switch the speaker size to large. This way the 40hz is locked in.
    3. Yamaha has an eight band PEQ for all speakers and 4 for the subs. The subs can be peq'd down to 15hz provided yours can play that low. You can then go to "manual" and set your frequencies there to your liking. Btw, don't over look the "Q" settings to make sure the timing is properly set or else you'll get some phase issues. Have fun 👍🏼
Hope that helped some of you. Yamaha doesn't get enough credit among reviewers but I stand by the product. Great reliability, sound and build quality.

It’s not that speaker are not capable it’s more that the speakers sound more full/warm for listening + the subs for doing the low, I know the speakers then do the low in large but I never hear distortion iv had the speakers set to small and played 5-6 movies with big sense and they just don’t sound full/warm like when set them to large. Yes your right speakers don’t do the same as subs will but setting them to full range and also with the lfe channel helps the rich fullness and kick.
So if I set my speakers to 80hz at small and life channel to 120 the gun shots sound okay but when I set it to large with the speakers sets to 80/60 the gun shots and exposition’s go right throw the seats and this is within a marantz 5014 and svs subs with mini dsp with bowsers 603s htm61 centre. I think I'll go with the recommendation from Paul from PS Audio where he explained where if you want the crossover to sound good, at least with music, you should use subs with high level inputs. What those are, from what I gather anyway, are any subwoofers that route the speakers line inputs to the subwoofers to then go to the reciever so that the high level frequencies are, to paraphrase Paul, necked down to something useable and use the subwoofer's crossover settings. And I believe LFE is mostly for home theater setups.

with lfe + main, those speakers set to large are no longer using a traditional crossover, as they are full range. The number just represents the level of bass duplication by the subs for those speakers set to large.
So, fronts set to large, then the 60Hz number (just an example) is not a crossover, its a bass duplication number. Meaning, everything at 60hz and below will be played by BOTH the large speaker and the sub.

Well, you also should explain that low frecuencies need amazing amount of power, so when you main speakers reproduce 20-30-40Hz, they need too much energy, taking that energy from the AVR, and even when the AVR is sold as 7x100w, actually that amount of power is only for 2 channels at the same time, when a film use all the speakers, the real max power is mch lower (maybe 7x50w). Making you speakers free of the low frecuencies, you are able of raising your volume much more if you only have an AVR and not and extra amplifier for you main speakers.
