Watching someone have problems with their vehicle isn't why I watch, seeing how they handle the problem and correct it is why I watch. Years ago I backed myself into a corner at work and it would have cost the company a lot of money to correct it. My boss simply walked over and said that if I could find myself into the problem he was sure that I could find my way out of it. I did and my motto in life became that if you found your way into a problem, stay calm and find your way out of it. It's worked for the better part of sixty years. Wonderful video. Thank you.

The mechanical fan could be the problem too!
    If not then
    Either an electric water pump
Or different alternator pulley, different alternator position and mounting and other crankshaft pulley should maybe do it.

im wondering if that fan might be actually out of balance enough to cause his issue during the rev? May be just better off going back to a good oem fan if he can fit it in?

I'd go with electric fans. The shaft is connected to the fan and as you increase speed the fan gives more resistance on that water pump

Randy, have you tried a billet water pump pulley? March Performa # 4032. Also, since you ordered the incorrect fuel lines for MTBE concentrations, double check. Plus, you have an aluminum carb on top of an aluminum intake = fuel boiling after shut off then restart 30 minutes later, or long idling. Add an Edelbrock # 8723 heat resistant carb spacer. Then add a return carb fuel filter with return to the tank.

Go with the advice from Santa's workshop. With the old style belts, overtightening the belts would cause excessive wear and tear on the water pump. Tighten just enough for it not to slip.

  • @MrClutch440T4

Randy, since your fuel pump doesn't have a return to the fuel tank to keep the fuel cool and a relief when you shut off the vehicle. Add, GM part # GF423 with a 5/16" return line back to the fuel tank...with MTBE concentrations limits.

i agree with most ppl here in the comments try it with an electric fan before you replace everything. the mechanical fans are heavy and puts a lot of twist on the shaft in high power and torque builds the fan clutch also will lockup suddenly under a dig and shock the water pump shaft because of the shear amount torque i had that same problem before because i wanted to be oem just like you. after i went to a electric fan i had no more issues

Hey Randy if you if you don't want to add a full serpentine belt setup..like someone mentioned in the comments section..add a electric water pump and electric fan setup..however you will need to upgrade your alternator with more amperage and that should take care of your water pump issues..and ultimately you won't be needing extra water pumps and belts..just my opinion.

The OEM pumps are built to certain specs, now when you drop a heavily modded built performance engine in, you cant expect the stock OEM parts to stay together for very long. Hopefully this is a learning experience and you can now do it up right with parts that will hold up with whatever you want to throw at it.

It's true. Out of my 50 plus years of being a mechanic I have never seen a water pump bend like that. There's got to be some kind of manufacturer's flaw I remember all the manufacturers saying do not over tighten because of unnecessary wear of the bearings. Never the shaft for peace of mind in the future, if it does go again I would try it an aftermarket water pump just to see if it does the same thing. It is weird though. Sorry to say I mean if it was me and it kept happening I would just switch over to an electric water pump and fan system..p.s. and no, I don't want to rub it in LOL. I wish that 40 Chevy was back in the barn at AAR headquarters for this year's event

Randy here goes....the proper way to adjust a t.v. cable is to have someone sit in the car and hold the throttle all the way
down. then hold the adjust button in and pull the cable housing as far as you can toward the rear of the car! this is the only correct way to adjust the cable on ANY gm car!!!!!

Ya know right about 1987/1988 GM went to a reverse rotation water pump for the serpentine set up on the small block like in a GMT400 lets say.. By some chance are you getting the wrong pump.. you have a serpentine belt but you DO NOT have a reverse rotation set up..
GM also make a serpentine kit all inclusive the part # is 19418818 if i recall its been a few years simce i have gotten one of these kits. It comes with all the accessories water pump alt, ac comp. P/s pump brackets pulleys belts the whole deal it use to cost 1200. Bucks or so.. good luck hope some or this info helps

For the belt that is too tight for the AC you could try to go up one size on the length of the belt to ease the tension a bit. It seems there has to be a place to adjust anyway, how did you get it on otherwise? You need to balance the tension to avoid bending the water-pump again.

That fan, does it turn all the time? If it is a mechanical fan it is big and it takes a lot to turn that thing, so when you are giving it the beans you are putting a lot of torque on it to turn, and then the pump shaft lets go, and gets bent. Take it off and try it, meaning give her the beans, I know you need the fan to help cool the engine, but just a short run before things get hot, maybe close to the shop. Personally, I would have electric fans on it, get rid of the mechanical one.

What size pulley is on this water pump, is it for the V8? Had a power steering pump one time blowout my hose and found it had too small of pulley for the pump, What a mess that was, could’ve aired up tires with that set up. just a ideal for you,
