Luciano Pavarotti vs David Phelps - High Notes Battle - Part II (Bb4-D5)

- First of all, it's not a true battle. It was just the way that I found to put together one of best singers in the popular music and one of the best opera singers. I hope you like!
Part I: • David Phelps vs Lucian...
Good grief ppl! The dude just posted a video featuring their range! He said in the description, it is not a true battle. Regardless of their different style and skill, it is still impressive. Yes, David slides into his notes a lot, but that could be part of his style too. Of course Pavarotti is one of the very best!!! Goes without saying! Nevertheless, they both sang Nessun Dorma. Did anyone catch that? ;-)
Jessica Vierra this deserves all the likes.
Jessica Vierra Thank you!!!!💁🏽♂️💁🏽♂️💁🏽♂️
Jesus! Not a lot seem to have understood that.
BassoProfundo20 its about comparing the clarity and purity of the notes not the styles in which they're sang. David Phelps might not be an opera singer like Pavarotti was but he is an excellent pop voice Tenor just as the likes of Freddie Mercury and Roy Orbison sang in the tenor register but where popular / contemporary style singers.
He violated the song.
Only at 5:17 phelps impressed me.
I am fortunate enough to say that I have seen both of these men sing live. I will forever be a David Phelps fan, but seeing Pavarotti live was a once in a lifetime experience that will likely never be matched.
Both have excellent techniques
Both can support those notes
Both have AMAZING resonances
What a treasure to hear both of these magnificent voices in the same video!!! Thank you for posting. Love both of their voices!
I agree, the power Pavarotti has is mind-blowing
Guys,
Both can reach the notes.
The difference is:
- *Pavarotti would not sing like David Phelps.*
- *David Phelps does not sing like Pavarotti.*
- *One sings with a microphone.*
- *Another can sing without.*
one has more control tho
Yeah Pavarotti definitely has more control.
really? i once saw david phelps mix C5 very softly to loud
a crescendo c5 basically
I've seen him do this with a Bb. However, in Rigoletto Pavarotti does this same Mesa de Voci technique at a High D5.
Pavarotti is still overall the better technician IMO (especially considering the lower ranges), which is unsurprising since we use western classical as the standard for analyzing vocal technique, and Pavarotti is one of the best classical vocalists ever (regardless of fach). But Phelps is also exceptionally skilled technically (especially for a non-classical vocalist) and as I had said in the previous video, his use of dynamics (crescendo/decrescendo, changing the weight of his mix to emote) is something that sets him apart from classical tenors like Pavarotti who're sometimes bound in the confines of the score.
In the end it's mostly personal preference, whether you prefer a low or a neutral larynx, massive projection or better dynamic control, a heavier tone or a slightly lighter one, etc.
P.S. Excellent job on compiling the clips, Rafael 😊
About the lows, Pavarotti never sang below C#3, I'm pretty sure I've saw David "supporting" this note and even lower. So we will never know. Their "supported" range are pretty equal.
Thanks :) I'm always trying to bring different clips.
Rafael Araújo Interestingly enough I was having a discussion about David's low notes with someone just a few days ago. I could vaguely recall him supporting a C#3, but I could only find Eb3+ supported notes for him. He sometimes goes a bit airy below E3-F3. Whilr Pavarotti stays in the 4th octave most of the time, he is still a bit more consistent in the 3rd octave compared to David.
Projection does not negate control of dynamics. Pavarotti was not known for his wonderful control of dyamics, (which is not to say that he lacked control of dynamics, just that he could've, should've been better, and I guess in his youth, he was) but every classical vocalist worth their salt are experts at controlling dynamics. I've even seen this in action. In my choir/chorus, the tenors had to sing an Ab for 7 measures. Most people could barely hit the note, let alone sustain it that long, on top of that, the score had marked that section as pianissimo. All of us resorted to falsetto, except the one conservatory tenor ( a spinto if you're wondering), who took the note very soft and sweet, with wonderful control. He could be heard over the whole choir, but it was also the softest, floatiest Ab you'd ever heard. Just because you could hear him over all of us, doesn't mean he was loudly belting it out. It's hard to explain, but he just floated the note on top of all the accompaniment and everyone. So, no, the right technique is not 'personal preference', it's the right technique.
As an opera singer, i have to say it, they are both great, what a nice surprise David, he is amazing, still, my hearts stands with Pavarotti.
Placidly Domingo said that Pavarotti had one of the most beautiful instruments in an acoustic setting in all of operatic history. But on a recording David has an advantage to those who never heard Pavarotti on an operatic stage. But if we are talking vocal technique it's Pavarotti hands down ,without hesitation ,no question. But David is one the greatest pop singers ever. He should be on the rolling stone hall of fame. Bravo David!!!!!!
Love it ~ thanks for putting this together; makes my skin tingle. Very creative.
David Phelps has chosen to bring glory to the One who gifted him with this talent.
No, he worked hard. It's not a gift. Or a years of hard freaking work.
He work hard but its also a gift
@@jingledalingas7954 Only for very few people and even they work extremely hard. It's 90% work for even those who are naturally good.
His vocal coaches
Love Pavarotti but David Phelps just leaves me wanting more and more. What a tone man!!
Incredible, I love them both, but David Phelps when he sings with the anointing of God, it truly brings goosebumps, like at 9:10
I’m sure David feels privileged to be compared to the greatest male vocalist of all time. Great comparison btw. They’re both special specimen not found very often in our human history at all.
Who cares who's better! It's pointless arguing over little things... It's pretty much debating over Vanilla Vs Chocolate ice cream. Piano Vs Guitar, it's two different instruments but they're both precious. It's just a matter of taste. They're both great and very talented singers with different qualities but what most important is whom do they/we worship? Let's try to see the good intentions in ppl, see positive character traits that trigger your increase of happiness. I hope my msg won't make you angry))
Thanks for understanding.
Dima Kushnir This isn't a video about world peace; it's just comparing two great vocalists' technique, resonance etc. David Phelps is a phenomenal vocalist but Luciano has more resonance and a better technique...
See, no one died from this.
Sing in the way David Phelps does it, it's my goal. His support and mix are great! I wish I could belt like him.
Pavarotti is one of thr best tenor in the world and nobody could deny it.
TWO GREAT TENORS WITH THRILLING TENOR HIGH RINGING NOTES !!
GREAT COMPARISONS BUT LET'S NOT FORGET THAT PAVAROTTI IS A SELF AMPLIFIED SINGER WHILE PHELPS IS A MICROPHONE SINGER , AND TO SING WITHOUT A MICROPHONE AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE NEEDS NOT ONLY POWER BUT PROJECTION ! ON THE OTHER HAND THE MIC TENOR CAN HAVE MORE FREEDOM OF TECHNICAL AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSION . IT IS INDEED THE AMPLITUDE THAT OPERA SINGERS USE THAT HAS ALSO BEEN
THE LOSS OF THEIR HIGH NOTES AND THEIR VOICES FOR NOT EVERYONE
POSSESSES A NATURAL BIG SINGING VOICE !!

Not Really A Singer
That's a nice goal!
David is one of the best and most beautiful voices out there.
But just don't focus on things like mix.
there really isn't such a thing
not in the sense, that theres an actual mixed voice register.
it's either m1 or m2.
u can mix resonance/sounds but not those two registers.
Raffael W. If there isnt mix than what is there?
Uhm.... m1 or m2.
I just wrote that..
Both are blessed with quality singing voices!
Ahhh man. David has had better singing moments than some of most of these clips lol I wish you put those up lol
lol I just saw you comment now. I don't like to repeat clips. So the videos used for Phelps in the High Notes Battles, he vs SoHyang, Christmas battles and here are all different (except for the Eb5 and F5)
Well the recording back then was not as good
Pavarotti sings without any effort, David has an incredible voice, but from this video you can easily see how Pavarotti technique is based on the breath in an incredible way. Anyway, two different techniques, two amazing singers. It s more the style you prefer
Both exceptional in their own genre! Good listen!
GREAT JOB RAFAEL
Pavarotti is epic, and only one man comes close, that's David Phelps. Christians that hear you sing are blessed with the spirit he holds. Pavarotti can give me chills.
The fact that you have to compare David Phelps to Pavarotti speaks volumes for David. To make a comparison you have to find a world class master.
AMEN!
4:23 is one of the most unique combination of voices I've ever heard
That is David Phelps and his daughter singing "Water".
Thanks for doing this. It really shows how GOOD David Phelps is. If he wasn't isolating most of his music to the religious side, he could be world renowned performer.
Yes he would be! But he is to God’s glory not to man’s
both are great. Different genres make them different
*Luciano is belting the same notes with more resonance and without a mic; David Phelps is a phenomenal vocalist but there are levels to this...*
GarageStudio David doesn't need to make that resonance because his style of music is totally different. If he chose to be an opera singer I assure he is absolutely able to make that resonance. And you know what even an opera singer can't make that resonance if they don't sing in an auditorium for Opera. All of classical concerts which perform in a stadium must use mike and amplifier for singers and orchestra.
Because the concerts are for a great mass of people, thats the reason because the concerts of opera have microphones
ELIAS.A.B.C_YT you were right but not enough. It is also because of the structure of the stadium or concert hall can't make the echo as in the Opera house, so that the resonance opera singers make themselve can help enough without mikes.
The places the contemporary singers like Phelp perform are usually bigger than an normal Opera house and the structure of them aren't for making echo, not to mention the audiences of Opera always keep quiet while contemporary music audiences usually acclaim, yell, scream during the performances. The volume of a electric guitar/bass can bigger than dozens of strings, one drumkit can be as big as the whole percussion... So I think people shouldn't underestimate the singers who have good technique as Phelp. Opera singers like Pavarotti are so great but it doesn't mean that he can sing well with other genre, and making good resonance isn't everything. There are things that you can't nail if you sing with an Opera sound.
how i say in another comment, he doesnt have a bad techniche but Pavarotti have the best techniche
lovestoryim,
You again are misinformed. Opera houses are made to be acoustical friendly, however, the Opera singer must sing against other voices and an orchestra. Another thing you leave out is that Opera is not just simply "OPERA" there are different types of Opera for different sizes of voice. For example, a leggerio tenor sings lighter material, and against much less orchestration. Most trained singers can sing at this level of volume. Pavarotti, go into the larger pieces of Opera and even still he didn't do the largest pieces like Otello. Most modern singers who sing with Microphones are relying on "MONITORS" to help them sing against other guitars and drums and it makes it a lot easier. In Opera, you have no "MONITOR" and in the heavier Opera it becomes quite difficult and tiring. That is why Opera singers who engage in Heavy pieces have a much shorter term and their singing careers last shorter. Also you are repeating things that I have already proved wrong. Opera singers have sung "other styles" effectively. Just because YOU don't think so is YOUR opinion. Vitorrio Grigolo sold PLATINUM as a POP SINGER and he proves your point wrong. Also, Pavarotti himself sang with a Pop voice on his recording of Caruso. Do you know that Pavarotti sang Caruso 2 days after listening to the Song? Did you know that? He sang with a Pop voice because his daughter asked him to. Now, Pavarotti's version of Caruso is the GOLD STANDARD by which all other versions of this POP song are judged.
very fun to listen to :) Overall Pavarotti is much more free and relaxed up there. David Phelps is extremely skilled there too. The difficult thing here is we are comparing two different styles of singing that strive for two very different qualities of sound.
Wow is beautiful.
obrigada pelo Pavarotti!!!!! imbatível
David Phelps is has the best voice I've ever heard.
They are 2 totally different singers. So would almost be impossible to compare them properly. They are both tenors, yes. They both have an outstanding upper register, yes. However they sing completely different styles of music. Pavarotti was an opera singer, and Phelps is a contemporary singer. 2 totally different genres. They are both the top of their field in their respective genres in my opinion.
9:02-10:02 Can't stop looping these ones!!!
I miss Pavarotti...
I love them both but I will never compare a gospel tenor vocalist with an opera tenor vocalist.
I enjoy those tenor high B flats so much.
Bravo 👏
Very cool that these guys are put in the same class. I am a huge David Phelps fan.
Well, someone has taken it upon themselves to insert them into the same class and while Phelps is astonishing . . . .
I personally think opera is the hardest form of music to sing and I also think Luciano has a naturally higher voice than David (tho I do love my main man David) so I think Luciano wins but I'm really surprised at how smooth David's D5 was so bravo with that.
Since when does naturally higher mean better?
Rosannasfriend, you are correct, naturally higher doesn't equal better, but Opera singers have a lot more
pressure on them to perform correctly and when they do foul up, its a catatastrophe in some cases. The phrasing,
and being at the mercy of a conductor in a live settting without the aid of any amplification makes it quite difficult.
When you hear a pop or rock singer off microphone, the sound will be much thinner, when you hear a good opera singer
off microphone, the sound is much richer and fuller with noticeable squillo /resonance. It takes years of study to achieve that.
I would say David has the higher voice. Pavarotti really puts a great deal of energy and spin to produce those high C's whereas David can sing them softly and crescendo into forte. Also, David does a lot of straight tone which is harder to accomplish. We can still appreciate, however, their unique colors and power.
Pavarotti can sing softly as well. Mezza Voce. Listen to Pavarotti singing in the part Offertorio in Verdi's Requiem. Pavarotti's part comes in about 4 minutes 50 seconds in, in the following ua-cam.com/video/z5_dwWfe97g/v-deo.html
Beautiful full resonance, much less wasted breath, as Phelps wastes breath and sounds more breathy in the soft tones, and also a much rounder fuller sound that is required for the theater not for the microphones.
Legend vs legend... Who's the winner then? Of course the audience!
2 incredibly talented men.
can you make a video with corelli and del monaco? this looks cool. nice work!
I WOULD'T BOTHER, DEL MONACO LIKE DOMINGO NEVER HAD HIGH C5'S
TRY FRNCO CORELLI AND JUSSIE BJORLING !
Tony Silva Del monaco's C were not great, but his b's were absolutely gorgeous!
SINCE ART OF ANY KIND IS IN THE REALM OF SUBJECTIVITY, EVERYONE'S OPINION IS AS GOOD AS ANYONE'S ELSES. SO HERE'S WHAT I SAY. A TENOR WITHOUT A HIGH C5 to HIGH E5 IS NOT A TENOR BUT A BARITONE WITH HIGH NOTES, THAT IS IN GRAND OPERA ! IN 1831 A TENOR BY THE NAME OF GILBERT LOUIES-DUPREZ CHANGED THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF HOW TENORS SING THEIR HEAD NOTES AND WE'RE IN THAT MODE STILL TODAY. @@tonysilva9458 WHY DO YOU USE CAPS ALWAYS LOOOL?
David Phelps took classical vocal training at Baylor University. In all fairness let's celebrate the beauty of each voice and be thankful we can enjoy their music. It's not important to be critical or fight over this anteddavidphelps.com/about/
In all fairness to be a performer. At the age of 18, while earning his degree in vocal performance from Baylor University, David began what would be a life-long passion of traveling around the world to share music, inspiration and good news.
No offense, but when Phelps hits these high notes he sounds like he’s whining.
i love it like the others
David, With all the ear pieces, the loud drums, the microphone into his mouth, vs Pavarotti all natural, there is no justice there. David Phelps is great, he's one of my favorites but Pavarotti is exceptional.
Otimos tenores. Cada um com sua particularidade.
I think they are both amazing
Luciano Pavarotti is a best tennor in the world but I love David phelp voice in every way he sings a song
Pavarotti sings - I said "wow". David sings - my hair stands
It’s all a matter of taste. Like comparing the sound of a US muscle car vs a F1 car. David’s runs is in a different league. 2 WIDELY different singing tecniques. Respect to both of’em 🎙
David Phelps amazing
Wow. This is so amazing. Christian rock RULES man!!!!
Who is next? Justin Bieber vs. Franco Corelli??!!!!!
Do you have the link for this video
5:42
both are incredible singers, but two completely different styles and I don't understand why anyone would compare?
One is a formally trained, truly exceptional Master of his craft that's perhaps second to none. Whereas the voice of another; although least in mans measurement, is somehow the Greater of the two as it's not from here, it's a gift that touches the heart like The Voice of an Angel.
Anybody know what is the title of the same song on that B4 around the last minute of the 3rd and the beginning of 4th ? Thanks
Nessun Dorma
Que voces maravillosas
😂😂😂 yeah! One with mic and the other one just with his powerful voice. No comparison.
David’s C5 is sounds so effortless 7:24
Through an amplifier 🤣
Where is the video of Che Gelida manina from?
Please do a video about John Schlitt’s high notes.
How could you compare anyone with Pavarotti? Crazy.
David's voice sounds better to me but I'm not a fan of opera music,
What Battle!
Both singers are really excellent!!
and legends
But for me, David gets better
I have sang with an operatic technique for a long time then switched to musical theatre and within opera the high notes are incouraged to be out in the same placement that any other not would be which isn't realistic if you listen to even the amazing Luciano Pavarotti it sometimes doesn't sound open in the back it sounds like they are slammed together and have an air leak when David mixes the note and is able to have more cord connect due to him using mix
Does anyone know what song comes out at 7:53?
I respect both singers,
David's voice tone is soft, flat but I find it has smooth vibes
Pavarotti's is rich, bold and vibrant and strong
Its like comparing a V6 Toyota camry vs V12 Ferrari.
Most people will still drive V6 and will have
enough power for most everyday use.
Overall I enjoy listening it to both of them.
David has a heavenly gift
David Phelps is my favorite. The opera singer, however, is the original voice of voices!
you can't compare Opera to contemporary singing. you just cannot. Opera singers are on a league of their own, second to none.
Can you imagine them together in a duet or a singoff?
Folks! This is just a matter of taste...2 equal skilled singers on 2 different planets. Respect to both 🎙
You cannot even compare the two.. Pavarotti's voice can fill an opera house with Volume and Power with no microphone. Big big difference.. let's see David hit a high C or D from fortissimo to pianissimo like Pavarotti can do..
Not only that. The person that created the video didn't put the best examples for Pavarotti for all of them. For example, they put one of his not so stunning Nessun Dorma. His peak one was in the 1998 Three Tenors concert.
Where can I find that version of behold the lamb?
It was available on UA-cam "back then", easily the best version.
Have been searching it for the last 3 months. 😢😅
4:21 When he hits the B4, is she doing the same note and the sound of both fuses together, or is she singing a B5 and I can't quite hear it?
She is doing a B5
I thought so since she's singing the whole melody already an octave higher than him. Makes sense.
Two angelic voices both fucking amazing....David just makes the hairs stand up though....wish I could understand what pav was saying man x love them both ......
could anyone tell me where 9:02 is from?
Just As I Am
Rafael Araújo Thank you!
Estilos diferentes.
Pavarotti did it without amplification, and with straight attack (ie, no portamento).
Does anyone know the name of the song that Pavarotti sings at 6:20?
O soave fanciulla
Just listen to the overall sound of Luciano Pavarotti and David Phelps voices......Pavarotti has such a crisp clear voice, when David Phelps voice is not clear. He can sing high notes,...so what whipty ding, so can I and lot's of Opera singing friends of mine can also,..,... but not one of them is Pavarotti....Never will be,........David Phelps went out on his own thinking he would take the world by storm.....He did not make it big, so back to the Gaither Vocal Band he came....Pavarotti, on the other hand is world renowned, with such an amazing voice I actually get goose bumps....He will, forever be #1... Bellissimo Papa Pavarotti , Bellissimo !!!!
Angelina Gigi Williams: There are classical tenors who would smoke Pavarotti.
SKMRify,
Opera singers or just classical singers? Pavarotti is one of the greatest lyric tenors of all time. There is of course Jussi Bjorling and others, but Pavarotti in his peak was quite good.
babystinky: Opera is a branch of classical music/singing (of course). And Pavarotti's quite overrated.
Yeah, but there are classical trained singers who don't sing Opera. Also, who says Pavarotti is overrated? ? What makes him overrated?
Can you name some good Operatic Lyric Tenors?
Fame doesn’t determine success:)
Really? Against Pavarotti really? Phelps is incredibly talented but Pavarotti was and will always be the master incomparable!
YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN!!!
David would agree with you!
Ese C del 4:55 es otro nivel.
Totalmente!
I thought this video was deleted for some reason
Two of the great talents of all-time; I prefer David Phelps.
Luciano Pavarotti. Exclamation point! Period! I am a HUGE David Phelps fan, but I gotta say, Mr. Pavarotti has it over Mr. Phelps. Pavarotti seems effortless and breathes throughout the entire note beginning to end every time. Mr. Phelps is fantastic, but he does not breath throughout the entire note every time.
Apples and oranges - both decent singers in their respective genres. Yet Lauritz Melchior, the great Danish helden-tenor of mid-twentieth century, and who also sang opera, sacred, and popular music - has them both beat by a country mile.
I adore David, but no one even comes close to Pavarotti..especially in his younger days...
