Extreme Prejudice Is The Best 80s Action Movie You Never Saw

  • Extreme Prejudice is an 80s action classic that not a ton of people have seen. I don’t think modern audiences realize what a big star, Nick Nolte was in his prime. The older, more grizzled guy we know now isn’t who he was when he first started making movies in the 70s. He first burs onto the scene with an acclaimed mini-series (one of the first of its kind) called Rich Man, Poor Man, and had a smash hit with The Deep, which is mostly remembered now for Jacqueline Bisset’s wet t-shirt scenes. Other movies like North Dallas Forty proved he was more than just a blond-pretty boy, which is how he was considered back then, and 48 hrs brought him to another level. But, Nolte always had a taste for more cerebral fare, and when he went commercial, his movies tended to flop, as he only really caught on to the zeitgeist again during his middle-aged period in the 90s, with Cape Fear and The Prince of Tides. One such attempt to mould him into a bigger star was this movie, which re-teamed him with his 48 Hours director, Walter Hill. It’s been called Hill’s homage to his mentor Sam Peckinpah, and sure enough, it does feel like a kinda-sorta remake of THE WILD BUNCH. It's this week's Best Movie You Never Saw and a movie I hope folks check out!

Dammit this film needs recognition, it's one of the most violent badass films of the eighties.
And the cast is incredible, a slimmed down Nick Nolte, Micheal freaking Ironside, Clancey Brown, Powers Boothe and William Forsythe. It's one of Walter Hill's best, with a bloodbath of an ending. It's fantastic!

Nolte looked great in it. A rare look at what he might have been like as an action hero.

@@JoBloOriginals He lost 50lbs for the role, and he looked in superb shape, especially if you compare how he looks in 48 Hours. But slim or not, he's an underrated action star that should have done more action films.

This movie was on constant rotation for me in the '90s. It is a shame that it is never received a true high definition version and getting good copies of it is extremely hard. I think I waited 10 years for a non-standard definition to be available on Google. Thanks for introducing this to new audiences and taking me down memory lane with it. Thanks for this synopsis. I always liked this film but I can't remember the last time I saw it aired anywhere. There was another Nolte movie that's underrated but I loved: Q&A. His turn as a corrupt, brutal, murdering NYPD detective could give Denzel's Alonso of "Training Day" a run for the most dirty movie detective. As for Walter Hill, a movie I always loved but gets a "meh" treatment: Last Man Standing starring the deadpan-portraying lone hired gunman by Bruce Willis.

Walter Hills great quote about storytelling was "character must be ruthlessly rooted in action". Take the opposite of that, the great gatsby...he was in a machine gun platoon in WWI at the Argonne, he was a bigtime bootlegger, as a kid he was the 1st mate for an old guy who'd struck it rich in the Klondike......all "offscreen". Hill said don't tell people, show them. The less talk and more action you know more about the character. Having spent time down in the Big Bend and being a fan of .45 autos....I loved Nolte's gun rig. In South Texas to the border this is referred to as a "Pachanga" gun. A dressy rig for a special ranching type BBQ, Tequila, & target Shooting contests.

Extreme Prejudice is an amazing film that is a must-see for fans of hardcore thrillers. It feels like a Peckinpah film; the similarities between it and The Wild Bunch are numerous. Nolte's character is based on a real-life Texas Ranger and he fit the role well. He could have had more action roles. Boothe and the rest of the cast are great too. And Walter Hill deserves more recognition.

I read One Ranger 🤠 too. The book seems hacky & tacked together at points. 1 of the "I'm so great" 🤩 story. Jackson sued Nick Nolte over a $$$ deal-offer. Nolte totes a 1911a1 Cdr type .45 because of Jackson. In the 1960s 1970s 1980s many rough Rangers packed SAO 1911a1 models.

But I did see it and I love Nick Nolte.

When it came to reviving the western, guys like Walter hill, John Carpenter, Peter hyams, and now Taylor Sheridan knew what the audience wanted and still does to this day.

It’s been very interesting the revived interest I’ve seen online for '80s and '90s Action Movies and their Directors, maybe because those type of films are going extinct in the mainstream and being replaced by newer action movies that aren’t as intense as these old school stuff?

I have loved this film ever since I saw it in the 80's. I even got the 'special edition' Blu ray last year. I would really like to know the reasons why Walter Hill is not recognized by Hollywood as the genius he truly is.
