Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

Don't knock the American dream. Some of these people gave up on the dream! But more sad than that they cashed out on THEMSELVES. there are programs, you just have to want to change and even then getting clean is HARD. I know plenty of people in recovery!! I thank God I was always too scared of drugs. I didn't want to die...or like these people, end up a walking corpse...this is the land of the living dead. I thought seeing people hooked up to machines in the hospital with family not letting them go was just that...nope! this is it...tragic

I looked at these locations on Google Earth and it shows a very different picture, there is no trash on the ground and very few people on sidewalks. I wonder if Google have Photoshoped the images, if so l don't understand why.
I think it’s a small area. I have rode through there twice on a Uber and you’ll see some trash and someone here or there. All of a sudden trash gets bad and you’ll see people using for a couple blocks and than things shape up again. Honestly there are a few people I truly feel for that are disabled or hurt and hooked on the shit. The rest look like college drop outs. A lot of the people I felt looked to come from a privilege world that think their addiction is glamorous.

@@mikewood7597 I really hope it stays that way. Where I live we had a raft of zero-tolerance schemes that worked well until the authorities slowly lost enthusiasm and it all drifted back like it was before.

It is a vibrant, thriving community. It is the City of Brotherly Love. The people have lots of money and do not need to work. They have cars and cell phones and a seemingly endless supply of cigarettes. They are free to litter as they please and are very peaceful.

There is something inherently missing in all these sad lives. It's much more than being addicted to drugs and being unable to quit. What really pisses me off is seeing billionaires rocketing into space for the thrill when just a fraction of that money could save LOTS of lives on earth. WTF is wrong with everybody?
It’s like the people who have money doesn’t give a crap about anyone but themselves. The majority of these people didn’t ask for that life: they all had dreams of a successful life. It takes one accident to become hooked on drugs. Some of them didn’t stand a chance to begin with- Drug addict parents who let people rape their children for drugs constantly, constant physical & sexually abuse. Parents who get their kids addicted, etc. By the time they are adults- it’s too late. The unseen scars they hold can only vanish by the next needle pop.

What is scary is that some/most of these individuals have no one meaning family/friends to help them out and maybe some of them did yell out for help saying I have a problem and please help me. They are left on their own. There are resources out there to help. Hopefully, They are wanting to get the help and recognize they have a problem and work it out and willing to put in the work/steps for a better life. It's out there, they have to see it, recognize it, work for it in a positive and a positive clean. It's not gonna be handed to them. They need to work for it 100% recognize and come to reality that they have a problem.
There was a lot of garbage there today. Some days there is more rubbish on the streets than others. How often do the city cleaners come in?

Those street cleaners in the neon shirts and blue reflective vest are the real MVP. They’re out there almost daily. The amount of trash these junkies throw around is horrendous. I see interviews where they say “other ppl treat us like trash, but we’re human, be nicer to us”..yet look at the trash piles around them, they live like animals, no dignity or respect for people around them whatsoever. I’d be pissed if junkies were lining my streets with used needles and garbage too.

There’s trash collectors all throughout this video..they are there almost daily. There’s even videos of locals cleaning up area outside their stores. What you see is a daily mess, all that trash is probably 4 hours old. They are that gross.

What's so incredibly sad is that there are so many disposable, throw away souls there who are someone's child, mother, father, brother, sister...it breaks my heart that they are so entirely lost. And so many people are so desensitized to the reality of the addicted that they walk by as though these poor people are invisible. Just devastating.
