Aye the Soulo was class mate. It’s great in bad weather but the most impressive thing about it is the amount of space and head height inside and it’s still good in bad weather. Mike was really unfortunate with the timing of the pole snapping. He had to spend most the night dealing with his tent. On a plus he did get a new tent which looks like it would do the job in bad weather👍 ATB Gaz.
Absolutely awesome video! I love hearing the weather and the rain on the tent, which looks to be a really great tent. When I used to backpack in the Lakes in the early seventies the tents were so heavy we has to split the weight between two of us, one had the poles and the other the tent and they always leaked. Great times though and a great experience to sleep wet and cold.
I always enjoy hearing the wind and rain on the tent as well. My Hilleberg tent is around 2.3KG which is one of my heavier tents I own. It’s a great wee tent though and reliable for camping on the summits. Thanks for watching ATB Gaz
I was surprised by the Vango Nevis 100 performance. I’ve camped in similar weather with my Nevis last year and it done well. Thankfully mine and Monty’s stayed up though it would’ve been worse if more tents started to struggle. You got much trips planned mate? @@GazTheExplorer maybe just unlucky with the direction of the wind and took the brunt side on or something? Nothing planned at the moment, unless a good weather window comes around, moving down to level 2 next week, so that's a bonus. Some of the Western Pentlands in West Lothian? 🤔
@@WalkWithWallace Thinking of doing some hills near Linlithgow so I don’t have to drive anywhere. I was going to do a woodland camp tonight but the weather is rubbish. Hilleberg do produce some great tents. The weather was wild that night but I always felt fine inside the Soulo. Plenty of room as well so I was quite comfortable inside👍 ATB Gaz.
Haha decided to watch this again. Mike’s tent at around the 16 min mark was a reminder of me a couple of weeks go camped on meall a choire leith in my scarp. 30 mph with 40 mph gusts. The windward side guys kept getting pulled out so the hoop was turning inside out. Didn’t get a wink of sleep. Lessons learned; make sure I take the crossing poles when wind is forecast and also I’ve treated myself to some msr cyclone pegs. Great video mate.
Cheers Richard👍 I think we have all had a bad experience in the wind at some point. I camped in similar weather in the Helm 1 and the tent nearly collapsed. Meall a’Choire Leith is a Munro I’m hoping to revisit for a camp. I remember the summit being flat and plenty of room for three or four tents👍
I think that wild camp was probably one of favourites from last year along with my Loch Grannoch trip. Mike done well to repair his tent to a standard that got him through that night. Me and my other mate Monty are looking forward to more camps similar this camp when the winter comes back. I do laugh at some of the comments I’ve received when people compare this or my storm Ciara camp to their camp at a Loch in 30mph winds😂 Storms on hills are much more eventful. Thanks mate, ATB👍
The Hilleberg doing what it was built for, Have you shared this video to the Hilleberg Owners Group on Facebook? I’m sure it would go down well. The Soulo is a stunning tent. I considered getting one but went for the Allak 2 because the Soulo was a notch to compact for me and my dog.
Not been very active recently on social media so I’ve not shared this video on Facebook. I’m sure the Hilleberg Group would be interested in watching this video. The video definitely shows the tents worth👍 The Allak 2 looks like an absolutely fantastic tent but as a solo camper the Soulo will serve me well. ATB Gaz.
Definitely worth a visit mate and plenty of hills that are flat enough for a good pitch. I’ve camped on all the main hills in the Pentlands and Bells Hill (the hill in this video) is by far my favourite. Cheers for watching👍 ATB
I took my Soulo on its shakedown camp up the Pentlands last December just before Hogmanay. I pitched up in the saddle between the Kips and wow was it a breezy night. Soulo survived of course, but it's a bloomin' noisy tent in a storm. I've still got my North Face Mountain 24 which is a fab tent for these conditions... Of you don't mind a tent you have to pitch inner first.
Yeah Monty said he could hear my tent throughout the night and it was loud. I’d rather have a noisy tent than a broken tent😃 I’ve camped up the Kips once and I plan on going back again probably next month at some point. Good to hear your Soulo got you through the night too. You need a reliable tent up the hills for this sort of weather I’ve had to bail out of a camp before because of the weather. I’ve heard a lot about North Face tents but I’ve never owned one. Thanks for watching ATB Gaz

Hey Gaz - just wondering with the flapping of the inner tent in high winds - does the inner ever touch the outer on windward side of the tent? If so do you think additional guy lines attached to the middle of the tent panels of the fly would prevent this or it's the inner tent that's the problem and that wouldn't be solved via keeping the fly taught on the outside?? Thanks mate and all the best. Mark
Hey Mark the Inner and the Outer never touched during the night. The inner does a fair bit of flapping but there is a reasonable space between the fly and inner. For me the Soulo is fine the way it is but I do understand why people add additional guy lines to the tent panels. I personally have issues with my Enan and the inner and fly do touch in the wind but the Soulo is fine.
Another great video! Keep em coming when the Covid 19 restrictions are lifted. And what an eventful night you all had in that strong wind! Regards Matthew👍
Got it off Amazon Mandy. Think it costs around £15 but its great for lower level camps. Would personally not take it up a hill like the one on this camp. ATB Gaz
A wee bit windy up there but it made some good viewing at least you all survived and nobody was blown off the hill bet when you got home you had 40 winks
The pegs went into the ground really well which helped. It was good that we all made it through the night at one point I thought we would need to possibly bail out. When I got home I went straight to editing the trip👍 The walk back from the hill to the car woke me up😃 Thanks for watching ATB Gaz

Do you have any idea what the windspeed was? Looked and sounded pretty mental though. The Soulo seems to be a pretty sturdy tent from all the reviews I've seen of it.
We all reckon between 50-60mph was the worse it got. Unfortunately I could not get an accurate speed when I tried to measure it that night. The Soulo stood up to the wind really well as I expected it would. The night was mental👍 I was due a windy camp though. ATB Gaz

Really enjoying your videos :) Thank you for not using the annoying camera shot where you set up the camera on a tripod and film yourself walking away or towards the camera while still on route to the camp site. No idea why it's so popular with other UA-camrs.
I sometimes do use the walking past the camera shots for my videos, but I focus most on filming the camp rather than the walk since it’s a wild camping video. Thanks for watching👍 ATB Gaz.
Both tents are red labels so I would expect the Akto to handle similar conditions. I own the Enan which is similar to the Akto and I’m impressed with it.
@@GazTheExplorer Do you think the Enan would have held up? I guess in the end, I can't imagine that kind of wind in Canada during the summer. After watching so many hilliberg reviews, I now have no choice but to buy at least one of their tents. lol
@@colwild If you're looking for a lightweight tent for the summer from Hilleberg then the Enan will do a job for you. I personally would carry the extra poles and weight because the Soulo is a lot stronger than both tents. I would not take either the Enan or Akto out in weather that is this bad intentionally but if the weather did get bad both the Enan and Akto should get you through it. I was in the same situation as you 2 years ago between getting the Soulo or Akto but I choose the Soulo simply for It's reputation in bad weather.

it feels good when you take on mother natures storms in a tent and survive the night lol .pity about your mates nevis .😢 if i was in the nevis .and hearing the weather forecast was saying 50+ mph winds later. that would of told me to move to a sheltered spot .or go home .because those tents are only good for around 40mph winds . but hats off to him for staying put . .atb kev
Yeah I’ll give Mike credit for staying where he was throughout the night👍 He recently got a new tent and he camped in it last night so I’ll try find out how he got on with it and I’ll mention it on my next trip. I was unsure what tent to take but I’m glad I took the Soulo in the end. His tent pole snapped just before 11pm so it was a long night for him. Thanks for watching. ATB Gaz.
Great video mate! A few questions on the gear if you don't mind! What's the down jacket you're wearing inside of the tent? Also do you find you get too warm in that sleeping bag? I was considering getting a Rab 900 or more but was afraid of going too high and getting boiling Keep up the great content mate 👍 Love from Wales 🏴
Rab Electron is my down Jacket I only wear inside the tent. I usually wear my waterproofs outside the tent or when I’m walking👍 The Rab sleeping bag does a great job keeping me warm and even if the temperatures are above freezing I still use this sleeping bag. I’ve never been in a situation where I’m too hot inside the bag, but I’d rather be too hot than too cold inside a tent during the winter👍 Much easier to cool down rather than trying to heat yourself up if you’re too cold. There are other options for the Rab Ascent range you could look at👍 ATB Gaz.
Both Monty and Mike said the same thing. It was them that picked this spot not me. When I camp on the hills I always prefer summit camping with good views which does mean I’m more exposed to the weather. ATB👍

Hopefully be back out camping by the beginning of May👍 Don’t think I’ll be back before May though even if lockdown restrictions allow it. Hope you enjoyed your camp up the Pentlands. I did notice it was a foggy night last night. ATB Gaz.
The storm chasers lol , Mike had a bit of a rough night but no worries with the Soulo mate. Good stuff Gaz ..cheers Stevie
Love following you guys in the wind rain and snow / from my armchair 😃 cheers Rob
Good to hear you enjoy our content👍 ATB Gaz.
Nice one lads. The Vango Nevis took a bit of a kicking, the other two tents look up to the task though. 😁
I was surprised by the Vango Nevis 100 performance. I’ve camped in similar weather with my Nevis last year and it done well. Thankfully mine and Monty’s stayed up though it would’ve been worse if more tents started to struggle. You got much trips planned mate? I’m in tier 4 so no camping from me unless I do a couple of local hills. The weather is rubbish so I’m missing this week anyway. Look forward to camping with you again👍 ATB
I think the Nevis 100 took too much pressure on one side of the tent. I think Monty’s tent showed a better view of the Nevis 100. The wind just kept blowing relentlessly in the same direction. At least you’re going down to tier 2 and you’ll get to drive somewhere mate👍 That place you and Kevin camped lately looked stunning. I’d definitely consider camping there in the future.
@@GazTheExplorer aye his door is taking a battering, probably faced you guys to be socialable. Just unlucky I reckon. I've been studying the local map for new places to camp as travelling up to the Highlands with limited day light can be a drag.
Oh forgot to ask, could you ping me a link to the firepit please?
Wow. Those were like Hurricane winds. I cant believe those tents were still standing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What pegs were you using with the Soulo? The standard Hilleberg V pegs that come with it?
Just standard MSR hooked tent pegs. I only ever use these for my wild camps👍 ATB
Cracking video! Two questions, what water proof jacket are you rocking, and what camera do you use? cracking footage and sound quality!
Mountain Equipment Garwhal is the waterproof jacket I use which you can get from Go Outdoors. The camera I use is the GoPro Hero 8 and the sound is from the Rode Wireless Go microphone. Glad to hear you like the footage👍 ATB
@@GazTheExplorer nice one thank you, really looking forward to your next outing mate, glad I found you channel!
Nice vib bro! :) It's why Hilleberg is the best tent on the market, Fjällräven 2nd. :)
Wow 🤩 that’s an impressive camp. Well done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
One of my most memorable camps. Always prefer the winter camps because it’s much more exciting and unpredictable👍 ATB
Up there I would double pole, even with a Hilleberg, and perhaps back up the guy lines with extra staking.
Another great video Gaz.
Its good to see two different sides to the same camp via Monty.
Poor Mike had a hell of a night 👀
Atb Mike.
Yeah Mike had a nightmare that night. Me and Monty done well filming this trip and it was a memorable experience👍 ATB Gaz😀🌧
If I was Mike I would have been bricking it 😂 Great video mate, a true 'storm' video unlike 99% of them on here!
Good adventure. 👍 They were very exposed to the wind in that place.🌪 Greetings. 🖐
Yeah was a bit exposed that night👍 ATB
Amazing video my friend👍🏻
Thanks a lot👍 ATB
ATB Gaz.
I live very close to the Pentlands and I've never camped on them. Maybe I should give them a try. Good video buddy
Definitely worth a visit mate and plenty of hills that are flat enough for a good pitch. I’ve camped on all the main hills in the Pentlands and Bells Hill (the hill in this video) is by far my favourite. Cheers for watching👍 ATB
Every time I watch your videos I miss Scotland more and more 😢
I live in Scotland and miss it🙁 Hope you’re well. ATB Gaz.

Good video mate. Just came across your channel. Fellow hiker/ wild camper from East Kilbride.
All the best mate,

Nice one mate. Enjoy your camps👍
Evening Gary, Hope your well. Just checking in to see your doing OK? Not seen you for a while. Hope your keeping occupied during this lockdown. Hopefully back out soon.
Take care mate.
Craig.
Evening Craig👍 Lockdown has been tough at times, but I’ve worked nearly everyday this year so it has went faster than the previous lockdown last year. I’ve no time at the moment to film so I don’t expect to be back on UA-cam until May at the earliest unfortunately. Hopefully by then lockdown will be over and camps will resume. Until then stay safe👍 ATB Gaz.
@@GazTheExplorer No worries at all, just checking haha. Enjoy work then mate. At least it's keeping you busy. Hopefully be back to a bit more normality soon. Stay safe and see you soon 😊
Oh priceless ! You guys deserve a medal for that ! Great viewing watching somebody ELSE being blowing to hell.. Especially the trauma look in morning .. thanks Gaz
Cheers Gordon I think we were just happy to get through the night when we got up in the morning. Yeah it’s always great watching camps in the wind and rain on UA-cam but it’s always a little scary when I experience myself. It was good to share the experience on UA-cam and glad you enjoyed👍 ATB
What kind of tent did Mike have?
Monty had the OEX Phoxx 1 and Mike had the Vango Nevis 100.
camping, wild rain
This is so good.ive done it in RV no fun.
Another great video! Keep em coming when the Covid 19 restrictions are lifted. And what an eventful night you all had in that strong wind!
Regards
Matthew👍
Thanks Matthew there will be more camping to come this year eventually👍 Until then stay safe. ATB Gaz.
That portable fire is awesome where did you get it hun x
Got it off Amazon Mandy. Think it costs around £15 but its great for lower level camps. Would personally not take it up a hill like the one on this camp. ATB Gaz
A wee bit windy up there but it made some good viewing at least you all survived and nobody was blown off the hill bet when you got home you had 40 winks
The pegs went into the ground really well which helped. It was good that we all made it through the night at one point I thought we would need to possibly bail out. When I got home I went straight to editing the trip👍 The walk back from the hill to the car woke me up😃 Thanks for watching ATB Gaz
The OEX phoxx 1 is such a solid tent. I've had it in strong winds and rain. I see your mate has the new version.
Yeah it’s a strong wee tent and definitely worth the price tag👍 It’s the first time I’ve seen the Phoxx 1 in strong winds and I was impressed by it👍💪 ATB
Good calm video lol gaz
HAHA Cheers Terry. Probably the most exciting camp I've had on the hills.
Yeah looked gd gaz
Hi i have followed your camps and always ment to ask did you have to get a permit to camp at loch venachar?
You only need a permit for Loch Venachar between March and September. I camped there in December when no permit is required. If you go on the Loch Lomond & Trossachs website and go to camping permits you’ll get all the info you need there. ATB Gaz
Wild 👍🏻🏕
Definitely wild for a small hill.
Get your ear plugs in . The pressure sometimes causes huge headaches in constant storm conditions , like bass inside a speaker , but yes brings back memories
I don’t go camping without earplugs. ATB Gaz.
Alright gaz lad. Obviously know u through monty vids. Im fudge been away to drunkie with the bhoy and had a chuckle... Will subscribe and surely meet up soon

Awwww! Was Loch Drunkie the 1st time you guys met?
Surprised to see the Nevis scraped through and Mike was still smiling. Is he saving for a Soulo 😀
He was going to buy the Hilleberg Soulo this week but it’s out of stock until next year. He got a Vango F10 as a replacement but he had to send it back.
I’ll be back out camping with him next weekend so we will find out what tent he has in my next video👍 ATB Gaz.
@@GazTheExplorer I got one from NordicOutdoor on 6th of November. They've had stock in a couple of times recently so worth checking regularly if he does want one. Got a sand one too.
ATB Gaz
That was wild. What's the name and make of the fire pit? Cheers 👍
Plenty of companies sell these fire pits on Amazon suchdeco is probably the most popular👍 ATB Gaz.
GazTheExplorer Cheers will look it up. 👍
Evening mate, ya I know that feeling lol. Went camping on the hills, an was hit by 50 60 mph winds an rain. Me an wild Camping Pembrokeshire, had it all night. It was madness. Lol but I did sleep very well 😁👍. Nice one lads. Cheers for sharing. Atb Andy
Always crazy how long the bad weather can last. Apparently the wind went on until around 4AM so it lasted around 9 hours for us. I’d say the wind speeds was around the same for us possibly gusts of around 70mph. It’s good that we all got through the night safely👍 ATB Gaz.
Whow that was brutal mate. I think that was worst weather in a wild camping vid i have ever seen. Hats off to you and the lads. Thanks for sharing a brutally wild camp. Atb Sconja 👍
It’s definitely the worst weather we have all experienced while camping. I always enjoy the windy camping videos on UA-cam so it’s good to have a couple of videos of the wind myself👍 A brutal wild camp is definitely a good way of describing this trip. ATB👍⛺️
Use an elastic band on the zips to make it quieter in windy conditions
Might give it a go the next time I camp in similar conditions with this tent. ATB Gaz
What kind of tent did Monty have?
Enjoyed that one mate 👍 Tent's bomber eh?
Glad you enjoyed mate👍 Yeah the tent is a bomber👍 Could do with some calm weather for the temperatures to drop and get a icy camp next❄️ ATB Gaz.
Wow, one would be in a world of discomfort out there without a tent.
Good video Gary. Did you get much sleep 🤣. 👍
Cheers Steve. I don’t know how but I managed 7 hours. Poor Mike was up most the night though. Earplugs done the job👍😂 ATB Gaz.
Yes I felt sorry for Mike but he got through it in the end. One to remember.
Roll on round 2 mate. We need a hurricane bawbag 😂
Next month at some point me, you and Mike will have to try another wild camp in similar conditions👍
His tent went down. Should have gotten a Hilleberg.
He has two now I think.
good channel this
Thanks James👍 ATB Gaz.
Could the Akto takes this kind of beating? Soulo seems amazing, but it's heavy.
Hi Gaz,
Very enjoyable video what a night would have loved to have been there, Out here in Ottawa Canada with 2.5 feet of snow can't get much walking or camping till the spring but your clips are tying me over during lockdown, keep up the video's star ***** What L is your Ospreys backpack?
The Osprey backpack used for this trip is the Kestrel 68. Great backpack for the winter months when I’m taking more stuff. I personally enjoy camping in the weather like this and I’m looking forward to doing it again in the summer. We’ve not seen much snow although I’m sure the Cairngorms has had it bad recently. ATB Gaz.
Not a good night to go.did you check the weather first?
Camped on that exact spot
Wild night bud
Probably my best wild camp last year. I’ll be back there again this winter👍
I can’t believe he got through the night in that Nevis. It was flat in the last clip you showed!! 😂
It was bad enough in the Hilleberg Soulo never mind being stuck in the Nevis after it collapsed so fair play to him for getting through the night. Wind calmed down after 4AM so around 9 hours of strong winds. ATB Gaz
That was crazy wind id have been crying like a baby lol
I just put headphones in and listened to music. It got me through most the evening. Of course got some footage of the night too👍 I think all three of us enjoyed the night even though we had problems with Mikes tent. ATB Gaz
Do u have a kayak?
I can’t swim so I don’t own a Kayak. Monty and Mike are planning a kayaking trip next year at some point👍
@@GazTheExplorer yeah he had said thinking about doing Eilean gorm at loch ard
it feels good when you take on mother natures storms in a tent and survive the night lol .pity about your mates nevis .😢 if i was in the nevis .and hearing the weather forecast was saying 50+ mph winds later. that would of told me to move to a sheltered spot .or go home .because those tents are only good for around 40mph winds . but hats off to him for staying put .
ATB Gaz.
I'm surprised you guys leave your door open during that.
As Tony would say ‘It’s grim.’
15:10 ... and then he knew he f**ked up. Good to have friends around.
Having my mates with me really helped me get through the night. His pole snapped in two places that night I think that was the second snap.
THE UK SHOULD PLANT SOME HARDWOOD FOREST.
There are a surprising number of videos of Scottish people camping in storms.
We do get some bad weather up here considering all the Munro’s and Corbetts we have. 👍
Great video mate!
A few questions on the gear if you don't mind!
What's the down jacket you're wearing inside of the tent?
Also do you find you get too warm in that sleeping bag? I was considering getting a Rab 900 or more but was afraid of going too high and getting boiling
Keep up the great content mate 👍 Love from Wales 🏴
Rab Electron is my down Jacket I only wear inside the tent. I usually wear my waterproofs outside the tent or when I’m walking👍 The Rab sleeping bag does a great job keeping me warm and even if the temperatures are above freezing I still use this sleeping bag. I’ve never been in a situation where I’m too hot inside the bag, but I’d rather be too hot than too cold inside a tent during the winter👍 Much easier to cool down rather than trying to heat yourself up if you’re too cold. There are other options for the Rab Ascent range you could look at👍 ATB Gaz.
Poor Mike. One only has to look at the absence of guying points on his tent to see where that night was headed 😂
I've seen this tent struggle in the wind many times. I'm sure he learned a lot from that night. ATB Gaz.
The Soulo is his next tent 😝
Wasn't it better to camp in a more protected area?
Nice views from the top, no question about that.
Both Monty and Mike said the same thing. It was them that picked this spot not me. When I camp on the hills I always prefer summit camping with good views which does mean I’m more exposed to the weather. ATB👍
The Hilly is Black or Red Label?
The Hilleberg Soulo used in this trip is Red
Would you camp 2 days in those conditions again? Or a mountain summit snow storm?
I'd definitely camp for 2 days in those conditions again and I would also do a camp on the summit during a snow storm. I've never camped in snow yet so I'm keen to do it. ATB
@@GazTheExplorer especially in that hilleberg soulo great strong tent maybe flapping bit noisy but at least your safe. @@GazTheExplorer great tent though, I wanted to camping in Scotland but FFS these harsh lockdowns are getting a bit tiresome, hopefully u guys will get travel restrictions lifted or as u say do a local camp , 🌨️🌪️❄️
For such weather, a two-person, two-layer expedition tent by Hilleberg Staika would be more suitable!!! Unfortunately, this tent does not have a skirt and the wind can blow into it from below!!! In such weather, a skirt would not be superfluous!! But this tent weighs 4 kg!!!
Speaking of bikepacking. Have you tried any bikepacking yet?
Not yet unfortunately and I’ll probably not get a chance to do it until next summer. I wanted to do it this year but choose to bag some Munro’s instead. I own three bikes so I’ll hopefully get a shot at doing it next year👍 ATB.
Before another one asks I don’t go camping without earplugs and wore them most the night!
In such weather, light walkers with an ultralight tent may very much regret that they did not bring an expedition tent with them!!!
Have you used your Robens Starlight in bad weather yet, you could let Mike try it out 😂
That’s the next tent I’ll be putting to the test the next time I get similar weather conditions. Due to lockdown restrictions the 3 of us can’t meet up for a camp until probably mid December. I’ll be doing a few solo camps next weekend and the following weekend so I might try the Starlight 1 then👍 ATB
Jeez I think I’d have the blindfold out and the ear plugs in - not much shelter out in those exposed hills
If you took a portable windmill up there, you'd have limitless power.
