    Fair play for seeing how far you can push a 3 season budget tent like that. Your friend took it well, i'd have been rather pissed off hahahaha. His reaction when it snapped was priceless haha. It's situations like these that make me happy about my Hilleberg purchase. Great stuff.

    • @MontyOutdoors

      Yeah, there was no chance the Nevis was surviving that, but it's a great wee tent in calmer conditions. The Phoxx is so small and low it was always going to be fine. The Soulo? Tent for life and indestructible. One of the best tents on the market in my opinion. Thanks for the commenting and watching though, Ryan. Appreciated.

    Yikes! This video is a great demonstration of how important the height and shape of a tent is when strong winds come to play. (We'll ignore the Hilleberg, because it's basically a house)

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, low profile tents are very effective in the wind and the OEX was actually pitched into the wind, rather than the bag end into the wind, so would have performed even better if pitched better. Hilleberg is still better for these conditions however!

    Really cool video, what an experience it must've been! Great to see that budget Phoxx do so well, it's always a blast seeing budget gear giving premium performance. That Nevis kinda does have its shape against it in those conditions though, I guess, there are much better angles to deflect the wind on the Phoxx.

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  3 роки тому +3

      The Nevis is a single hoop and the Phoxx has 2. The Phoxx' real advantage here, is the lack of surface area: the wind can't hit it! And it's very well designed and is easy taut.

I have got a Bobcat 1 which I highly recommend, but as it is a bit high-sided I wouldn't recommend it for on top of an open hillside. @@MontyOutdoors In some cases maybe but there are single pole designs such as the Wild Country Zephyros that cope very well. I own a Starlight 1 which uses a singular pole but does have short poles at the end which seems to stabilize the tent well - and it can take very strong winds indeed (Gaz owns one of these too).
      The Vango Nevis has always been highly recommended so I am still surprised. Hopefully, your mate will be supplied with a new pole for free. I really like videos with extreme wind tests - thanks for uploading.

      @@peesua Low lying, streamlined tents with a little arch at the bottom would do the trick, but I think the Nevis having a single pole in the middle and being quite big, there was so much surface area being hit by the wind. I've heard Banshee's coping with the wind with modest ease. Without a doubt the Zephyros and Starlight would have coped significantly better. I just think the position of the pole and the size of the Nevis left it vulnerable in these conditions. I think Gaz used his Starlight in stormy conditions and it kicked it out the park. In the Pentlands as well, just another hill.

    That brings back memories of camping for the BTCC just out side croft, We were just moving items into the tent and my dad was pegging the ropes and adjusting, when there was an all mighty gust, that blew the side of the tent in. We managed to pop it back out again, we suspected that the wind had damaged the pole. My dad had to move the car, to shield the tent. The wind didn't let up at all, we had only 3 hours of sleep all night, and what a long night it was. The wind still blew hard right till 7 pm the next night when it calmed down. The site owner got on his high horse at my dad, for parking the car on the grass. My dad practically told him to fuck off, as we had been battered to hell by the wind. The rain i don't mind at all, as long as the tent is a good one. The wind though, that's a different story. Anyway when we took the tent down, it was confirmed that the wind had split a pole, but what didn't help matters was how my dad had it adjusted.

    I’d take lots of vegetables with stock and some meat and make a delicious slow cooked stew on a fire. 2 hours cooking. With big chunks of bread 🍞
    Better than all the ready meal stuff.

    Vango was a serious let down, glad I never bought one, that's one weak centre pole.

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  4 роки тому +4

      Vango tents may be reliable in these conditions, but certainly not a tent with a weak centre pole as you said. I wouldn't take a Banshee out in that either. I'd be interested to see how my Mirage would cope with the semi geodesic design. What do you think?

      @@MontyOutdoors have you tried it yet? I reckon it's stronger than my helm 2, which is allegedly bomb proof. The nevis is the from the cheaper range (like the scafell) so aren't designed for exposed wild camping.

    Is it just me or is gaz a bit of a gear snob now?? Lol theres no need for big flashy hilleberg tents or rab ascent sleeping bags. Although u get what u pay for. A lot of people will relate to you more as you use affordable quality gear.

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace 3 роки тому +4

      Surely you're only a gear snob if you slag off or look down your nose at cheaper gear? Gaz has got loads of different tents from Lanshans to Soulos, enjoys going out in varied weather, so cut him a bit of slack. 😎

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  3 роки тому +2

      You're bang on the money, sir. You get what you pay for. Gaz has been in storm like conditions and in exposed spots like this and his tent handled it the best. My Phoxx did well, but there was superficial damage to the poles. Gaz is also a big fan of Vango and OEX tents, especially the Phoxx. He just likes to stay warm and safe, me? I like it a bit more, say... lively 😂
      I'll maybe get the 1 expensive tent for the rare occasion of being on top of a mountain while adverse weather conditions roll in, but I love the cheap quality equipment that generally does the job. It also assists the average joe - just like myself - with making cost effective purchases. Appreciate the comment mate.

      Do you think it's poor throughout or at stages? I did a test before I did my first lengthy speech and it was fine. Then I did that clip and it's muffled and it pissed me off big time when I was editing it. I only use a samsung S20. Do you know of any modestly priced mics that would do the job? Apart from that, I was satisfied with the sound. It was just the 1st 2 mins that is shocking and can't affect the channels growth.
      I'll check it out shortly mate. Cheers.
