Alfy & Devlin. ps. also fun to see that our sticker is still there after so many years!

Taking your little home to explore the unknown is quite the experience. So many days you wake up to a new backyard. I love how you don’t just pass by with your beautiful cinematography but do the research and actually learn and pass that knowledge forward. Ok you will definitely have to do some cooking series. Luckily you have some calm waters to produce the exceptional meals. Keep a spare ramen package just in case! Love the loons, love you guys ❤❤❤
I am reliving my cruising days, when Central Coast was our regular hangout. Love, love, love your videos! Your production values are off the charts and both of you are so great at the presentation. You do your research and you are so natural in front and behind the camera. Thank you for sharing your adventures with the world.
One of the things I love most about y’all is seeing places not many (if any!) channels are going to. I don’t mind seeing Greece or Nuku Hiva again for the 318th time because everyone has a different take on the experience but it’s really great to see you two doing it a little differently. The subs are growing quickly, I see…Currently closing in on 16,000 subs!
Thanks so much for that! Really happy to hear folks are enjoying what we're creating and it's been exciting to see the number of folks grow. Cheers mate!
My uncle, Colin, from Alert Bay recommended watching your videos....I'm based in Europe although I spent a lot of time out that way since I was a kid and it's real pleasure watching your channel. Thanks! :)
Awh, that’s so awesome! We know a couple of Colin’s around town💫 Love that you’re enjoying the videos! Maybe a little nostalgic?! Thank you for writing us, cheers!!!
A groovy and informative episode, with some new, special history of that part of Canada. Super boating adventure, rad tour guide, and killer pizza. You two rock. P.S., Canada in the outback is so naturally gorgeous. Stay groovy, stay safe, and stay healthy.

Your journey is awe inspiring, your willingness to share is motivating, and your persistent pursuit of richer storytelling is fucking difficult and so well done. Thank you! Already looking forward to seeing your next one!
I've paddled the inside passage twice, a 10 week trip and a 14 week trip, from Seattle to Skagway via kayak. The primitive camping and wildlife was unforgettable. I've also sailed it from Prince Rupert to Seattle. I lived aboard a Chatham 33 steel pilothouse cutter and did a singlehanded circumnavigated in the high latitudes, north and south. I've also visited Milford Sound while bicycle touring in New Zealand. Your video was a nice reminisce for me. Thanks!
Thank you for another great video of B.C’s inside passage and abandoned towns. Lots of interesting history and breath taking scenery. Alison, you are magic in the galley - it always looks so delicious ! Fair winds.
Really interesting seeing the old fish cannery. I love your positivity on the journey. Keep up the terrific filming. Enjoy the autopilot cruising and see you next video!
Some really interesting places like this along the coast! Thanks for nothing the positivity. Looking forward to sharing more of the journey with you, cheers!
I literally just tripped over your channel, I'm so glad I did! Your filming, editing, story, music just fantastic!! Now I can't wait to start at the beginning and binge watch to catch up to where you are now! Also seeing Magic Carpet comment just sealed the deal !!! Take care and be safe! Love the scenery and the waterfalls, wow!
Bishop hot spring was a high point when we traveled from Port Townsend to Sitka on our new to me Bristol 35. After several days without a shower the warm water was enjoyed. No one else around and a beautiful place. I will enjoy the rest of your videos.
Gosh, such a treat isn't?! We had the same deep appreciation for the warm bath after days in the cold wet! Thanks for checking out our vids! Hope you enjoy the others, cheers!
When I paddled the Inside passage some years ago I met Corey, the Caretaker. A great guy , a passionate photographer and artefact collector. He lived there for years with his dog and a cat. Corey took pictures of the Kermode(spirit) bear., the birds and his island. He was very helpful , a great host. I hope he is doing well after leaving Butedale. You should have made it up to the beautiful lake. There is a nice trail. Safe travels!
Cool! We we're expecting to see a caretaker as well and have heard a great deal about Lou, (the most recent caretaker)? Would have loved to see a Kermode bear, maybe next time. Thank for watching, cheers!
Good stuff! I have memories of cruising past Butedale in the evening around 1986 - all the lights were on in the many abandoned buildings. They kept the lights on to keep a load on the generator! There were still quite a few buildings at that time. Two years ago it looked the same as what you have seen, but there was a kermode bear spotted on the beach just prior to our arrival... we missed it :(
Awesome you've gotten to experience this place first hand! We read that about the lights, pretty interesting stuff! A spirit bear on the beach would've been a pretty incredible sight! We heard tale of sightings in the coves around Butedale as well but we also didn't get so lucky. Maybe next time! Thanks for writing, cheers!
Love this video and the beautiful coastline it depicts. I’ve had the pleasure of sailing in B.C. for almost 40 years, mostly in the Salish Sea as far north as Sonora Island, plus exploring the northern fjords from Bella Bella to Prince Rupert aboard a work boat, and have experienced first hand the beauty (and rain!) of the north coast. It’s beautiful even in the rain and fog but on a sunny day, few places on earth can rival it. Visiting a place like this, with such vast, almost untouched wilderness, is balm for the soul and a welcome antidote to city living, where once might be forgiven for thinking the world is getting overrun with development, traffic, noise and people. Yes there are a few crumbling monuments like Butedale, plus a few widely scattered First Nations communities that still thrive in the area, from Bella Bella and Shearwater to Klemtu, Hartley Bay, Kitkatla and others, that mostly live in harmony with the coast, but the sense of wildness and majestic isolation remain. Long may this coast preserve its wildness as a refuge from the developed world and a welcome reminder of what once the entire planet was like.
Allison and James, your video of the inland waterway up the northern B.C. was a real treat. The beauty of the region was spectacular but that had to do with your talent as videographers to capture the scenery in all of its glory and there were some shots that made me wonder how you manage to get that shot without the help of a third person camera operator. The hot spring pool looked fantastic. It must have been just the right temperature for you to be able to sit in the water for two hours. I remember sitting in the hot springs of several pools at the Royal Swazi Hotel in Swaziland which were perfect in terms of the temperature of the water. Watching you guys enjoy the hot springs took me right back to my time as a volunteer working Swaziland. P.S. That pizza was to die for. It's 2:00 a.m. and you've given me a bad case of the munchies.
2nd to none, tremendous video all around absolutely stunning cinematography, loved the history and tour of the ghost town, and could almost taste the soup and the pizza hope they were as good as they looked on video. Cheers guys ❤
This is wonderful!. I spent many years, 1988 to 2002 engineering and surveying in that area. Docked our boat often at Butedale and one other long abandoned pulp town you may have missed: Swanson Bay, where legends of gold laden quartz veins in the forest are said to be found. Many times, we'd have our float plane to Bishop Bay Lovely! .... At the north end of Gill Island (where the BC Ferry Queen of the North crashed and sank in 2006) there is a place called Turtle Point, it is an Indian Reserve with ancient burial sites and the local indigenous legend that it was the place where their ancestors landed on the beach after the great flood, to be greeted by giant turtles and many screehing monkeys. Yes, that's the legend the elders of Hartley Bat told me. Your video makes me very nostalgic
Amazing! So glad you’ve gotten to experience the magic here first hand. We’ll have to check out Swanson Bay. Love hearing local stories about this coast, there’s such a rich history here! Thanks so much for sharing, hope you enjoy the rest of the videos! cheers!
I have sailed this coast, visited Butedale, stopped in Hartley Bay and then cruised north through the beauty of Grenville Channel. My daughter and I pulled a crab trap completely filled with crabs as we prepared to leave our anchorage tucked in behind a little island along the east side of Grenville Channel. Wonderful place to cruise, weather and all! When I was last in Butedale (in 1998) one man was still living there, trying to single handedly save the buildings from ruin. The lights were still on night, I guess he is gone now.
Fantastic! Glad you’ve gotten to experience the magic of this place first hand! And jealous you found crabs! We’ve heard interesting stories of a caretaker in Butedale but he’s no longer there.
Good call protecting the tiller autopilot from rain. I had mine fail this summer after a full day, some 55 nm, sailing in 20 knots wind and a very wet rain. The next morning it just beeped in agony and didn't work. After two hours in the sun it dried up enough to work again, but long term it probably causes corrosion on the circuit boards. My new boat had another ST2000+ tiller pilot, so now I have two. I sail mainly singlehanded, and the autopilot really helps a lot. Excellent episode again.
That sounds like a real nice sail, we find that most of the good wind here in the PNW is accompanied by cold fronts, is it the same on the other side of the pond? Our tillage pilot held up for the full trip and we’re really glad that we had it for the long motoring days!! Thanks for watching Peter!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Cold fronts give wind, but generally there is even otherwise good wind in the Baltic Sea, with the exception of some rare stationary unusually warm high pressure systems. The sea breeze, while being strongest in the spring when the water is cold, is quite reliable.
I've been up and down the Inland Passage several times but always on the "poor man's cruise ship" namely the ferry from Bellingham to Ketchikan. I loved it, the scenery can't be beat and civilizations are far and few between. Good luck!
Haha respect for the poor man’s cruise ship! The scenery looks the same no matter what ship you’re on hey?! Arguably one of the best cruises in the world. So glad you’ve gotten to experience the magic first hand! Cheers!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing I have a lot of photos and slides of this time of my life. One memory that stands out is the winter in Cornwall Inlet(1983). We were breaking ice one day on a scouting trip. We were very close to shore, rounded a point and came across a pack of wolves eating a deer right on the shore. I never got a picture as my camera was down in the galley and I didn't want to miss anything.
Just found your channel, WOW! What a breath of fresh air, well done guys- subscribed and rang the bell, looking forward to catching up on the story. -Jim

Dreamy! My daughter and I watched your adventure this morning before school. We added it to our bucket list...but we're gonna need to upgrade from our NACRA 17, which I use to teach my kids how to sail, over on Lake Michigan. Keep going! (Ohhhh....I LOVED Milford Sound too...lived and worked in New Zealand for two years).
It is already about 35 years ago when I discovered the west coast and Haida Gwaii with my backpack, seaplanes, kayaks and on a shooner. Your videos bring back so many wonderful memories and I hope to be back in this great part of the world as soon as I find my own sailing yacht. Who knows, maybe I'll see you there, too, would be great. It will be a long way from Europe to the Canadian West Coast with the sailing yacht, but I'm looking forward to it. Best wishes from Germany, Juegen
Awe, amazing! Love to hear that our videos are taking you back and so glad you’ve gotten to experience the magic of this place first hand! Hope to run into you one day out here, cheers!
Hahah! We’re big fans of their trousers but agree some back pockets would come in handy! Glad you found us, hope you stick around to see where these pants end up 😂
Sam on "Sam Holmes Sailing" had the same issue with his auto-pilot. Water/moisture would get in. As I recommended to him there is a spray called Electro-Seal which you spray on the electronics. It is a clear rubber film and it protects them from any water that may seep into the auto-pilot. Spray both sides of the circuit board and any connections. I use it on all my outside DIY electronics projects and for years I have not had any issues.
We have had a simrad tiller pilot for 18 years out in the rain and blistering heat, the only issue we had was with the deck connection where the pins are… if these get wet they corrode. Mike has clean carefully. We also have a remote for our tiller pilot which they don’t make anymore., the wires broke and we couldn’t get a replacement so we took it to a cel phone repair place and they re soldered the wires… it works great. We bought or Simrad TP22 back in 2006, 18 years ago and has served us faithfully all this time…still use it today.
@@AllisonandJamesSailing thanks hope your holds up as well as ours, we love your episodes and we were hoping to meet up with you in Alaska but we ended up with engine problems and had to turn back. Oh well next time
The water usually gets in around the seal where the shaft comes out or the seal around the periphery of the device. I take mine apart at the end of each season and lubricate the seals & screws with dielectric grease. When it starts raining under way, I just wrap the device with saran wrap from the galley. No problems yet. Fingers crossed. Ha!
We’ve been using a ziplock bag! Glad we’re not the only ones keeping the look janky. Good call on servicing it at the end of the szn, something we’d ideally like to do! Thanks for writing, cheers!
I loved that thumb nail!!! Pretty bad a**. And Allison, those adventure pants... they look so tough and are such a great color. Okay, now to watch the video :-)
Hahah thank you for the thumbnail compliment, we rarely receive one of those! Maybe we should ask @fjallraven to sponsor us 😅 Hope you enjoyed the video!
This is exactly where I would sail if I had a sail boat.... going south is so overdone .. beaches are nice, but you can't top this for atmosphere . Live it when sailors go north. 😊..
In 2018 I did the Inside Passage on a Kawasaki jetski. Tented overnight in Butedale and had a much needed soak in the Bishop Bay hot spring. Great to see these places in your video. Enjoy your content. Now it’s time to make a pizza in a cast iron pan.
No way, that's quite the trip! Glad you've gotten to experience these places first hand. We met some kayakers in Butedale who were very grateful to take shelter, camping out in the old cannery building. Respect for folks doing the journey in smaller craft! Awesome to hear you're enjoying our content, enjoy the pizza haha cheers!
Just found your channel, cool I like it, guess I'll now have to backtrack all your other vlogs. Long been fascinated by the inside passage, thanks for taking me along for the ride.
This is great- I'm planning a trip to sail this route in the very near future. Thanks for your reflections! As a wilderness guide in the Tongass National Forest, I had always understood that it was the largest temperate rainforest in the world. Funny that they'd disambiguate though, considering the Tongass and Great Bear run right into each other in everything but maps.
Amazing, glad you've gotten to experience the magic first hand! Tongass and Great Bear are very much the same forest, guess the different countries on either side are having a different go at marketing it. All the best planning your trip, feel free to reach out if you have any questions, cheers!
Oh! For your Autopilot cover you might consider using a Fat Bike tube? They're +4 inches / +10 cm in diameter. If you chop up a section of the tube you'd have a nice, very waterproof, cover!
@@AllisonandJamesSailingdefinitely did! thanks for sharing this beautiful route, I'm looking forward to the day I can sail the inside passage to those hot springs😅although maybe not on the R20, maybe the 26 though 😂 Ray Richard's and my grandpa Ken Wheeler designed and built the Ranger 20, 26, and the original Ranger tugs, so I gotta keep it in the fam💯 I grew up learning the ropes with my grandpa on hull #1 and still have "ichi ban" 😃 probably will do the r2ak first, anyway, enjoy your adventures!!!

I remember cruising with a friend of mine for a couple weeks south of there exploring. So much fun and the scenery was amazing!
Awesome trip! It really is a special spot for sure, it’s amazing how much there is to see up there! Thanks for sharing, cheers!
Cheers!
Brings back memories of the 10 years I spent on a logging float camp. From Steamer pass, north of Prince Rupert, to Rivers Inlet.
Wow I bet it does! Lots of time to spend out there, I bet you've seen some amazing things
So nicely done… I travel with you guys…. And loving every second… keep going
So nice to hear from you Ute, thank you for writing! You guys have been a big part of the journey and inspiration. Hope you are doing well, miss you!
Thank you so much…. So sweet of you to… yes doing well , traveling Argentina

We enjoy your videos so much! Great job!🥰
Yay! Thank you!
Awh, love hearing that!
So amazing they’re having the opportunity to learn sailing from you! Such a gift💫
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Thank you, cheers. ❤
the video was recommended for the sailing, clicked because of them Fjallraven trousers!👍 Stayed for the adventure. Great video!
BTW, Im wearing the same exact trousers right now. I love them, but I just wish they had back pockets. lol😉
Hahah! We’re big fans of their trousers but agree some back pockets would come in handy! Glad you found us, hope you stick around to see where these pants end up 😂
@@AllisonandJamesSailing For sure. I will be watching. Happy sailing
You two are such a delightful couple! I really enjoy watching your adventures! I wish I could go along for the ride too!
Awe, thank you so much! So glad you're enjoying. Miss you guys!
What a adventure have wanted to do it since high school in the seventies.. I will just have to follow along with you, thanks for the invite.
Awh, its a bucket list trip for sure. Thank you for following along on the adventure with us, cheers!
Thanks so much for the tip! We’ll look into that, cheers!
Great that it’s been serving you well! Ours is a Raymarine so I guess we’ll see how it holds up. Thanks for watching, cheers!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing thanks hope your holds up as well as ours, we love your episodes and we were hoping to meet up with you in Alaska but we ended up with engine problems and had to turn back. Oh well next time
Just found your channel! Can’t wait to look into it in more detail. Love this type of content ⛵️
Awesome! So stoked you found us, cheers!
Maybe we should ask @fjallraven to sponsor us 😅
Hope you enjoyed the video!
@AllisonandJamesSailing seems like an on brand channel for them to sponsor ;-)
Great Video, stunning content interesting narration. Keep Well & Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! See you in the next one, cheers!
This is exactly where I would sail if I had a sail boat.... going south is so overdone .. beaches are nice, but you can't top this for atmosphere . Live it when sailors go north. 😊..
It really is a special place up here! Glad you agree. We think you'll enjoy what's ahead, cheers!
Very cool video. I worked as a fishing guide in that area for a few years, you captured the beauty of it so well.
Awe, difficult to do it justice. Thank you!
A great video, thank you :)
Yes, reminded me of Fiordland too !
I bet you didn't want to leave those hot pools !!!
Kind regards, John.
Wellington, NZ.
Loved my time in New Zealand, very similar!
Glad you enjoyed the video John, cheers!

Stoked you found us! Thanks for coming along on the journey.. the Inside Passage is pretty incredible! Hope you enjoy the other vids, cheers!
New subscriber, enjoyed this episode of your travels to new places I’ve never seen. Looking forward to more!
Awesome you found us! Glad to have you along on the journey, cheers!

Glad you think so, cheers!
The last time that I saw this place featured on a sailing channel, a few years ago, 9 months later they had a new crew member !!😀
Not sure the baby-making potential of Butedale is that good?! haha
Very nice to see your adventure. Now I want to sail north next summer
Thanks! You should totally go for it, it’s a bucket list cruise
The Pizza looked delicious!
It definitely hit the spot! Thanks for watching, cheers!
great looking ....⛵
Thanks!
I emjoy your videos keep up the great work G
So good to hear, thank you so much!
Oh! For your Autopilot cover you might consider using a Fat Bike tube? They're +4 inches / +10 cm in diameter. If you chop up a section of the tube you'd have a nice, very waterproof, cover!
Great creative suggestion, thanks so much!
Nice start to the video.
Thanks!!
Cool 😊👍
Thanks for watching, cheers!
Awesome! Love it! R20' "Ichi Ban" Tacoma Wa.
Glad you enjoyed, cheers!
I loved how you made your pizza 🍕
