Notes: Transform description is messed up lol. Also i shoudlve mentioned in gen 7 the non-imposter sets were more common because after gen 8 speed tiers got too high
You also forgot mew that can learn transform
@@Raphanobi not VGC legal
No Pokemon to trace it from.
@@MoxieBoostedWhat about transform Smeargle? It's new meta
0:57 Also you put the move description for Fling instead of Transform
I would put Pokémon Gimmick from gen 4 Cherrim as an honorable mention. Despite the unimpressive stats, he taught us that in meta Uber with Groudon next to him, it gives him that extra 1.5x boost in attack and special defense to both and be very tough to have against
Good point!
I'm still gonna use flamethrower
Fun fact:it actually won one tournament in gen 4 (i don’t remember which one tho)
@@DanixMRsworld in 2008 senior or junior
Im gonna run it with Koraidon if it's released in this gen.
I'm sure Mimikyu counts as a gimmick pokémon due to disguise, and it has been a VGC staple for 7 years at this point.
Definitely kind of a gimmick!
Remember when pre-nerf focus sash Mimikyu basically guaranteed Trick Room, especially with redirection. On its own, you need to hit it AT LEAST 3 times before it gets KO'ed and you only have two Pokémon at a time.
@@MoxieBoostedi don't see how araquanid is a gimmick but mimikyu isn't. It has a built in substitute!
Honorable mention to eiscue
@@marvalice3455I'm not sure how much eiscue is really accomplishing but true
Gimmickyu
A gimmick i like is Hawluchas flying press being the only dual type move
I think the idea is really cool but they picked the wrong types, flying press gets like no utility from having a dual typing
I hate it because it raises so many questions about why _other_ moves aren't dual-typed.
Like muddy water being a ground/water
I love seeing comments like these
@@craigstephenson7676speed runs think otherwise
Smeargle Baton Passing to Dondozo sounds absolutely horrifying
Sounds more horrifying if it’s one of the let’s kill Tatsugiri as quick as possible to let out Flamigo
@@rontheauraknight9606 Yeah, that’s why you run Toxic Orb Tatsugiri
Too bad the sheer threat of dondozo has led to haze being a common backup move, but dondozo being meta-defining still gives it points.
Unova zen mode darmanitan is a gimmick gone absolutely wrong. Smh such a cool mon but a terrible ability
Virgin unovan zen darmanitan vs THAD galarian zen darmanitan
at least they fix it with Galar Darmanitan xD
0:58 when you're describing Transform the video shows the description for Fling.
Oh also friendly reminder that if Smeargle comes back in the dlc, not only is it gonna gain access to Silk Trap, which it probably won't run since it works like King's Shield, but it's also gonna get DECORATE which is horrifying
Isn't decorate pretty middling?
@@chungaplea3323mo
@@chungaplea3323 definitely not, the ability to raise your allies Attack and Special Attack by 2 stages even through Protect is absolutely insane
@@cbuttyvgc I was under the misconception it gave bulk up boosts. Yeah that's busted.
Revival Blessing
It’s pretty funny how Shedinja is mostly used on Kyogre teams in VGC, yet in Smogon it’s mostly used to wall Kyogre
"This thing comes in two forms: Defensive and spicy."
I-
"Moody increases a stat by 2 stages while decreasing another by 1, except Accuracy and Evasion"
*_proceeds to say Smeargle can land a 75% accuracy move all the time_*
I know they nerfed Moody by preventing it from affecting accuracy and evasion in Gen 8 but it sounded funny
@@PorkSharkno ur correct idk why he said that
He also said dondozo and tatsugiri were the first gimmick pokemon with an ability that only activates when both are on the field, but plusle and minun also technically do that.
Update: Plusle and minun are in the thumbnail for the worst abilities in Pokémon 😢
@@randomizervidz5449 To be fair, Klinklang has access to both.
Omg it’s dawned on me how good tera water araquanid would be. Add rain and you have 5 different multipliers on liquidation including item, and three layers of fire resist with the natural resist from pure water type, plus losing all the bug types weaknesses
Even max bulk Palkia is getting 3HKOed. Contrastingly Modest Specs Chi Yu’s Overheat only does 27%, or 40% with Helping Hand, even against no-bulk Araquanid.
I never knew ditto could transform into YOUR OWN pokemon. That's so cool.
There is actually 1 more precedent to only Darkrai being able to use dark void starting SM, and that's that in ORAS only hoopa unbound could use Hyperspace Fury. I believe smeargle could sketch it but not use it in-battle (or in contests, funnily enough).
Wait, they banned a move IN CONTESTS? THAT IS OVERKILL.
@@anthonybenci9035 it's because of the animation for the move. The animation includes hoopa in it, so it would look wierd
I really hope Araquanid gets added in the DLC for Gen 9. It playing around with Terra just sounds fun
True.
@@lucifermorningstar8562just imagine how much stab it could give it’s water type moves
Araquanid is in the DLC
@@prestonhayes6810 source?
@@bluebaron6811homie was right.
When you were talking about ditto when you said “bigger fish to fry,” I was hoping you’d transition over to Dondozo
Missed opportunity
Looks like a donedozo moment 😂
@@solunaescutcheon5428 stu lmao
I love making gimmicky teams. I’m trying to build one around the new wind based gimmicks that belong to Brambleghast and Killowattrel. I think they have the potential for incredible synergy.
I know killowattrel works well with any weather team because of Weather Ball...try rain Dance team with brambleghast,killowattrel,kyogre/pellipper...
@@prestonhayes6810 my current lineup is kilowattrel, Brambleghast, and pelipper. That new duraludon evo archaludon, I think, will also join the team. I’ve got 2 more spaces to fill tho
@@dominiclombardiPlusle and Minun 😂😂
Tatsugir:Ok dondozo, you see no murkrow in their teams so you know what tô do
Lol
I was running clear smog amoongus just for doze in series 1
2:49 No, DARKRAI got tried for Smeargle's crimes if anything LOL
well, in defense, Darkai used to rule entire meta with the Dark Void, 125 base speed and the move itself is 80% accuracy and target 2 pokemon at once
If there is ever a pokemon that's designed similarly to shuckle (extremely high defense but extremely low hp) but viable, I wonder if copying it with ditto would be strong since you'd basically be getting a tankier version of it instead of frailer. That sounds funny
Physical Pex
Eviolite Dusclops?
@@machinat3636 nah it (and the previous one) don't have nearly as extreme a stat distribution as shuckle does, the whole point is to have stats so extreme that ditto having more base health would become a significant boost to survivability.
Although even for the meme, realistically ditto's stats are a bit too low for that to really work, even with shuckle going from 20 to 48 base health isn't that exciting.
Though I guess that would mean you could invest all EV's in defense with your target pokemon and then all EV's in HP for your ditto, so the gain in defenses would be ridiculous in that sense. (but you'd sacrifice efficient EV's for your transform target)
@@Laezar1 Okay I gotcha, I do like the idea of a transform Mon where EVs are the main idea behind using it, almost like a baton pass boost but built into one pokemon
Perhaps Shedinja?
Have Ditto (or even a Smeargle with Transform) turn into a Shedinja for a mildly bulkier Shedinja.
You could even go for maximum gimmick with Shedinja, Ditto, and Smeargle all on the same team.
Would regigias and weezing count?
Technically neither are gimmicks on their own, but together they sort of function like tatsu dozo
They’re were by far my favorite duo I’ve ever used in competitive
I considered it! But I ended up not including it because it wasn't designed as a gimmick
Id considercthat a gimmick strat and not a gimmick pokemon
@@kurocon6235its not a gimmick its literary better without ability
@@MoxieBoosted Disagree on the regigigas (and slaking) part, them being super strong but weighed down by their ability definitely puts them in solid gimmick territory
One of my favorite gimmick strats a friend got me to try was this: any lead plus Tatsugiri holding flame/toxic orb with the move endure. Turn two switch in Dondozo and watch as Tatsugiri faints inside its mouth and you send in Flamigo to get that free boost. I did it one time and laughed at how busted it was. 😂
Displaying the Smogon Logo when you meantioned stall at 11:48 is hilarious
I'd say Alcremie toes the line of being a good gimmick Pokemon, along with Stonjourner. Decorate is an insane move allowing a free Weakness Policy without having to get smacked(and can be repeated), and Power Spot is a free Life Orb boost while they're on the field. Both of these mons just need to find the right format and team to be used. During early Gen 8 VGC, I used a Sun Stonjourner team that included Eject Pack Ninetales that speed crept Charizard by one point. Ninetales would hard switch or Overheat into Stonjourner while Charizard clicked Max Wildfire, which was a guaranteed OHKO on ALL Dusclops, the bulkiest boy at the time.
don't forget battery charjabug.
Losing to Shedenjia always feels like it's your fault, because you should have known better
12:03 Dondozo: These doughnuts are great! Jelly filled are my favourite! Nothing beats a jelly filled doughnut!
Loving all the big edited content coming out man!
A video about most hated pokemon in VGC sounds amazing! Love your channel, it's helping me learn about competitive play
The Frog Type Beat in your videos goes hard
I think Houndstone deserves a mention thanks to it's signature move, Last Respects. It is a physical ghost move with 50 base power, but gains an additional 50 power for every allied pokemon that faints, even if it is subsequently revived. In a normal match, it's expected that this will be the last pokemon on the team, swinging a 300 power physical ghost attack each turn.
While cumbersome to do and absolutely overkill, the move can go up to 5050 power after 100 allied faints, where it caps.
Basculegion also has it.
This was very well explained! Take my sub.
Araquanid is my favorite mon ever. So happy to see it on here
great, high-quality video as usual Mox, keep it up! :D
Can you imagine if Ditto had the same base stat total, but 10-40 each were taken out of Attack and Special Attack and put into Speed and HP? It'd actually be kinda good if it could reliably Transform quicker and had more HP than most mons it transforms into in exchange for always being a turn late.
11:07 there are more Pokemon with habilites that only activates when other pokemon is in, like plus and minus
Araquanid is a gimmick? I wouldve guessed Mimikyu was more of a gimmick lol
Or oricorio or minior. Theres plenty of gen 7 Mon that are more gimmicks than araquanid
@@JacobPDeIiNoNi i love minior because its "shell" form actually protects itself from sleep/para/poison/burn iirc
I like that the move transform has the description from the move fling in the Video ❤
great vid thanks for the knowledge
Loving the edited comtent - also would love to see the video on generally disliked VGC pkmn 😊
hope you 'fling' off that sickness and feel better =)
excellent video, Mr. Boosted
0:55 showing fling description is really funny to me
Masterful gambit, Mr. Boosted
the music in these videos is a vibe
4:25 Speaking of Shedinja, Game Freak knew that Shedinja would become a nightmare with Terastalizing around which is likely why it didn't make it into the latest generation, basically tera electric shedinja with the air balloon equipped = immovable wall
Ah, Ally switch. Useless in casual, obnoxious in competitive.
Transform description being description of fling was a nice start for the video lol
the most overpowered gimmick would be an electric type with wonderguard and an air baloon (or whatever the item for avoiding ground moves is)
NDAG
I’d love to see a video of gimmicks that don’t work, and what they would need to work
Lmao you putting fling instead of Transform definition is hilarious
sableye has one gimmick that no other pokemon has:
prankster+skill swap.
you can give prankster to your amoonguss and give it priority spore.
if you get lucky you can put the entire enemy team to sleep, if you are not your pokemon will faint and get next to nothing done.
usually you are not lucky.
not to mention that the prankster sleep does not work on grass types and dark types(dark types are immune to prankster.).
prankster spore so meowscarada is double immune
Anyone remember those unique Z-moves or Z-status moves.
Z-Stockpile Araquanid (one shot healing on a bulky Pokémon that normally doesn't get those + def and spdef boost)
Z-Conversion Porygon-Z (omni boost + type change to electric or dark)
Extreme Evoboost Eevee (DOUBLE omni boost on a Pokémon that can use baton pass)
People don't love Z-moves but i love how wild it effects status moves.
Also, remember when Psych up was relevant enough that Kyogres were running it.
11:06 plusle and minun just dont exist anymore
i love these videos, i have 0 knowledge of competitive pokémon outside of them pretty much. you’re straight to the goods and the rhythm and writing is concise and clear. keep it up mf
if shedinja comes back in this gen, Tera + wonder guard + ally switch sounds like the most annoying thing in the universe.
I'd say that neutralizing gas weezing also counts as a gimmick pokemon, since the ability is entirely dependant on interacting with the abilities of others (which you can't control), or interacting with your own team (which you can control, but the there's only 2 which is worth interacting with in this manner, both which are gimmick pokemon in their own rights)
You forgot something important with tatsudozo, if tatsugiri fainted in dondozos mouth (a super niche self destruct strat) dondozo would keep the stat boots next to another pokemon, usually co-star flamigo
What do you mean "they are the first"? 11:05
Plusle and Minun and the other mons with that ability activate with another mon
I feel like there's one more ability like that as well, but might be wrong
I love how smeargle is being eaten by the bug fish in the thumbnail. Looks lovely!
SMEARGLE IS MY FAVORITE! I LOVE SMEARGLE!
It’s really telling how annoying can Psychic spam be when smeargle wasn’t in the thumbnail of most hated competitive pokemons.
I once had a match where Shedinja had just enough turns to stall out a Life Orb Yveltal leaving them with no outs
Transform having the description of fling us a true tranaformation
gimmick Pokemon builds are my favorite i use mimikyu and ditto as cores and brain storm ideas😂
The thumbnail is so genius 😂
No mention to Cofigrugus’s Mummy ability?
It’s kind of unfortunate there was no mention of the tatsugiri/dondozo double gimmick where you get a toxic endure tatsugiri enter into commander, faint, then have an omniboosted Dondozo WITH an ally. Gimmick on top of a gimmick.
I remember using transform with smergle back in xy 4v2 kanga
Another notable gimmick is Bad Dreams from Darkrai. In early generations, it basically allows the inflicting of sleep via Dark Void to be a way to apply chip damage since you are causing passive damage. From breaking Focus Sash, to revealing speeds on opposing Pokemon to allowing you to scout Lum Berry this gimmick just made Darkrai go from a powerful Pokemon to being extremely punishing to switch into before sleep clause activates. Even with the Dark Void nerf, this is still potent enough that it contributes to Darkrai being far too strong for OU in case its amazing stats wasn't enough.
Nothing about araquanid seems like a gimmick to me. Just a strong ability.
Zoroark from Gen 5: Am I a JOKE to you?
Yes it is
predicted it correctly lets go
There is also a Dondozo cheese that makes this 2v1 boss fight into a double boss fight with just a Tatsugiri, Dondozo, Flamigo, and Drifblim.
0:59 TIL that transform is actually fling
I didn't know that water bubble doubled the power of arquanid's water moves. That sounds really fun in the rain.
4:07 except accuracy and evasion as said 2 seconds ago
Top tier thumbail
My favorite gimmick was Palossand with Water Compaction and Weakness Policy. Run it with a Water Shuriken Greninja and your Palossand will be a monster wall in just one turn (then use Shore Up to recover HP)
11:05 Lies. Plusle and Minun are saddened by being forgotten
(Plus and Minus abilities are more general nowadays, but i think they used to be exclusive to this pair of pikaclones, if i remember correctly)
11:11 actually minus and plus are the first abilities that work like that :B
Smeargle is coming back in SV dlc!
Shidinja my beloved
I had no idea Araquanid was used in VGC at all.
It's one of my favorite mons, but I've only used it a lot in draft leagues.
"Generation 9 is the first time where the ability activates when both the pokemons are on the field."
*Forgets about pokemon's failed attempt at making plus and minus pokemons gimmicks successful*
As a mono bug player, I LOVE araquanid!
Gimmick Pokémon that have had results alongside niche choices as a metagame call will always be my favorite mons in VGC history. Bonus points if they use a strategy that would only work in doubles to begin with.
As a 2016 player though, Smeargle deserved the punishment for Dark Void crimes.
Everytime I see Aegilash I'm reminded Zamazenta doesn't get King's Shield... Like if there was ever a signature move only 2 Pokemon should learn, it's King's Shield.
Oh yes my favorite gen 7 mon aegislash from the alola region
Gimmick pokemon are my favorite kinds to use, along with underrated pokemon that aren't superb in stats, movepool, etc
...this is also why I would probably suck in competitive LOL
0:59 the transform description is describing fling
Welp
Here's one heck of a gimmick. Shedinja + Electric Terra + Air Balloon. It's not exactly gonna work on anyone good but it's funny to check a salty teen who is spamming legendaries.
12:12 Oblivious is not Unaware 😢
5:30 I Don’t know if it’s changed later on but in Gen 3 when I found this Pokémon by accident and saw only 1HP I was confused and didn’t understand it’s ability at the time. Was a lot younger. But you could use an HP up and I actually rose it’s HP to 2 because for some reason I thought it could take at least one hit that way
10:41 needs some mention of surf weavile. Was nice to be able to activate steam engine without doing major damage and you still had a solid mon on your team really.
Tatsugiri could die due to stuff like poison, which would cause the battle to turn into a 2v2 with buffed dondozo
1:02 strange definition for the move transform
Wait, wouldnt choice scarf ditto go right to struggle? As if it went for transform first thats what would be locked in?
Did you know you can make a Pokémon only take damage from hazards and sandstorm in doubles by using Shedinja, a mon that knows ability swap and a Arcanine(or any pure fire type) with burn up.
Zoroark is one of my favourite Pokemon for its ability alone. Illusion is just so fun to pull off, and I wish that it is more viable in competitive play
Moxie, just out of curiosity what do you classify as a gimmick? Reason I ask is that I never would have considered Palafin a gimmick initially but after thinking it makes sense.
Their is no clear definition for gimmick Pokémon. If I had to make one it would be Pokémon designed to be played in unusual ways to be their most effective in battle.
Ditto designed to use another Pokémons features
Smeargal designed to have access to any move but weak power
Shedeninga designed to take no damage from most moves but fold to any move that can hit it
I can go on.
