Great technique to overcome fear of the blank paper. Thank you for addressing the distortion in photo references
I always wonder about people's techniques. Thank you for sharing this. I got so excited once I realised what it was.
Thanks :-)
Very strange coincidence today. I watched this video in the morning. Completely new to me. Then went to what was basically an estate sale an hour after watching and found a foil print of this castle. The owner let me take it for free. I don't think it is worth anything but I couldn't not take it, especially for free. I just find the odds really strange so I had to let everyone know.
I love the layers this seems to add to the sketch. I'm looking forward to trying it. Thanks for the tutorial and inspiration!
I can't wait to try this technique. Actually, it combines several techniques, giving the watercolorist many options. Thank You! We all need challenges to grow as artists.
Love this technique and found a painting I wanted to work on but couldn’t figure out how they did they background and you did a beautiful job of showing me how it is done. Thank you!!!!
Thanks! I tried and like the results. As a beginner, it helps to learn to loosen up and play.
Teo you are one of the best artist on UA-cam, I enjoy watching your videos. Have got got a lot of good ideas from you.
+Gary McGuire Thanks 😀

I love this type of drawing thanks.👍
I did four washes before a good one. The relaxed wash does not soak the paper as much, allowing for more water. Remember to leave white areas, everybody!
Definitely gonna try this! Thanks, Mr. Teoh!
I just finished my first flawed sketch and wash, but working with new real brush markers oversaturated fast even tough to thin down! I will watch out with them more next sketch. Beautiful sketchbook, the backgrounds appeal to my style right now. Good demo.
What a wonderful video! Great tutorial, beautiful sketching and such vibrant colour choices and skilful execution.
These both came out very well for you. It’s another good technique to have in our watercolor endeavors. Thank you!!
Love the splatter technique!!! I favor the orange castle. Thank you for your wonderful tutorial!!!
Having painting as a hobby from my childhood, I have been come across many paintings and painting style. And after the birth of UA-cam , I started enjoying learning painting through good tutorial videos here. But this is a wonderful video, which introduced a wonderful and different technique to me, actually which I never came across and studied all these years. Simple and lucid teaching. Thank you.
+kishor vivian Thanks for your comment. 😊
This is a really cool sketch you've done Teoh. It looks great. Can't wait to try the technique for myself. 🙂🎨
Thanks! :-) It's an easy technique to try. Just don't make the initial wash too dark since it's just supposed to be a background wash.
They're alot of technique's that can be combined with this one. Thank's for sharing this really is relaxing and this is one of the simplest one to do.
Wonderful demonstration encouraging to hold brush & start painting right away. Thank you from India for sharing the technique.
You make it look so simple!

+Stephen Harpster (Harptoons) Thank you 😁
Thank you so much. I can't believe you did this technique. I have been thinking about learning it and was going to try to experiment. I love both pieces you did. Almost like the castle is in different seasons.
+Crystal Korzep It's seems the colour does not matter as much
This technique is so interesting and creates almost a surprising result when finished. I think it's beautiful. Thank you for the demonstration.
Oh - what brush did you use to apply your color? Your brush seemed to have the perfect ratio of water to paint. Could you also add water first then paint over the water? Or would that make the paint too transparent?
The brush I used is the Nevskaya Palitra brush. It's a sable brush. Other brands will perform similarly. I did not use too much water so as not to make the surface too wet.
Yes, you can wet the paper first. It will create a softer look and none of the hard edges.

Thank you so much. Im just a beginner and I was wondering how can I fill out large spaces with colours but this technique is really cool.
Well done. I was looking for help with this idea of a wash first then the line-art. Thanks.
I am a beginner at sketching. this video is really helpful. Would sure try this technique.
Great result! Thanks for the tutorial!
That is beautiful! And cool. I just had to subscribe!
new technique is really beautiful
I fibbed, this was the video that I watched first, then the Manchester ones. Regardless they are all wonderful, thanks again!
Big Hugs!!
Reeah.

I will try ! I love your job !
Thank u very very much.
A simple but very helpful tutorial...
Thanx again
I loved it! Gonna have to try.
Very nice technique! thank you so much!
Hi Teoh! I like this technique very much! I have watched this video various times, and will be trying it soon. My favorite painting is the lighter one because of the awesome shadow contrasts. My favorite part of that painting is the back tower to the right. The contrast there is wonderful, and really makes it appear to be cast in strong sunlight against shadow. Very nice! 😊💐
P.S. Please let me know if that book is ever back in print. It looks amazing! I will check out Book 2.
Love seeing your work; today I am enjoying the artist who does splashes before inking. This practice really looks like a fun mystery of how the painting is going to unfold. I am going to try it !!
I like the first version better ;) love this style I shall try it in my sketchbook today. Thanks for tutorial
Oh my god. She's part of the Urban Sketching Singapore. I've seen that book 😍

Thanks :-)
I really like this technique.
great work..
Hi Teoh yours videos always very useful..thank you...i have some question ,how you decided the colors of the splash..for background
This technique would be great using ink first, like the inktense palette, as you then wouldn't need to worry about reactivating the wash :)
Thanks for the tutorial. I love this process and would love to incorporate it.
+amidesigns Thanks :-)
