With the plastic wrap , if you leave the wrap on overnight for the paint to dry , and then remove when dry , you will retain all the interesting pockets , lines and structures , instead of all the paint just flowing back in together while it’s wet - 😊
HUGE revelation with the tablespoon of salt ADDED to the WATER--instead of After! Thank you soooooooo much for sharing this! I can foresee some really pretty watercolour journal pages in my near future! WOW! What a cool result!!!!!
Love the quick & clear explanation. Suggestion: would have been helpful to have a shot at the end (so we could grab a screen shot as a reminder) showing all 3 results side by side. I like to grab a screen shot, then add text with all the deets placed on each result (wet-on-wet, 1.5 C water, 1/2 T salt, etc). Thanks for your consideration. Loved & will be using the techniques in my card making !
I have always loved watercolor pictures. I have been trying coloring with them for a few years. Thank you SO MUCH for showing me how to use them in 3 different ways. I just subscribed to you channel.....happy...happy...happy
Lots of thanks for your video and tutorial. The techniques with the salty water and the bleach I've found wonderful, and I'll use them . In the third trick you have to let the saran wrap for 20 - 30 min to dry the water. I 'm sure the effect will be much more beautiful ! I make this one also with the acrylic .
Thankyou so much for showing us all these fantastic tricks. I have been trying to make backgrounds that looked like trick 3 without any success, to the point of giving up. Your tutorial is so easy to follow.. I am over the moon. Again.. a huge HUGE Thankyou...
Using borax salt in place of table salt makes the paint crystalize when it sets so you get colourful flecks of salt crystals throughout the painting :D
Have you done a watercolor wash (a couple of dark colors work well), put plastic wrap over it, scrunch the wrap up and let it dry? When you take the wrap off it looks like frost on the window pane the way it creates lines within the wash. Dropping salt onto the wash is also fun and comparing table salt to sea salt to kosher salt is great because each gives a different result.
You can get strong veins of color contrast by first wetting the paper and putting the color done. Then, wrinkle up the plastic kitchen wrap and placing in down. Let it dry, which can take some time because it is wet under the plastic wrap. But you can place it in the Sun out side and over about 4 hours it will dry up on a Sunny day. Watch out for the wind that might blow of your paper and the plastic wrap. You can weight it down with some rocks or bricks. This makes it look like under water ripples.
That is try. I have some of my student do this and I take the out. It can loosen up the glue holding the hairs in. I am sure she took them out after the video. I keep taking out the brushes from the water as I walk around looking at the students paintings. But some of them just keep putting the back in. Since my classes are only 2 hours long, I get them out of the water and clean them off.
Love this! I've used the trick of putting salt on my paper but I've never seen anyone use salt water! Turned out so cool! These would be great backgrounds for Christmas cards! TFS!
Such a good video ! Quite amazing , the effects , yet simple . Thanks so much 🙏. Clear instructions , no music suddenly blasting my ears . Love it . ❤💞
I am wondering if you could keep those lines on the saran wrap technique more if you left the saran wrap on while it dried and placed it on a screen to let it dry from below. They seemed to largely disappear when it was removed.
I don't know if this has been discussed already, but I wouldn't count on the salt or bleach water producing archival work. I know that sprinkling salt has a negative effect on the lasting properties of watercolor paintings. Still, very cool effects and a lot of fun to experiment with! Thank you! (I'd be interested to compare the saltwater with oxgall, which can have a similar effect....)
Lovely blooming.I will try the Saran Wrap technique with my Spectrum Noir Aqua Watercolor markers and see what happens. I just purchased them and have not used them yet. TFS with us.
The saltwater technique just went work for me at all. I did everything exactly the way you said, but nowhere near close to the results you got. What am I doing wrong?
The Saran Wrap is definitely my favorite. I have some art project ideas and that technique is so perfect for the look I want to achieve. Thankyou for the share!!
Pretty neat! With trick #3 - Saran Wrap - once you pull off the Saran Wrap you can ball it up and touch it to your wet paint to get cool shapes! As the paint is drying you can dab the pigment with the Saran Wrap to get more interesting shapes and things. The paint on the Saran Wrap will stay wet longer than the paint on the paper. Just a suggestion! Thank you for sharing!!! God Bless!!! 😋
Great ideas. One other thing I have used is to blot wet paint with a paper towel. Depending on the texture on the towel you can create a variety of textural patterns. You can get a fine overall texture with a flat folded sheet or use a crumbled towel for a less-even texture. Results also depend on the pressure you apply. The high parts of the towel’s texture pick up the paint, making it lighter, while the indentations leave more paint.
Hi Teela, have you tried leaving the cling film on the paper overnight until it is completely dry before removing, you can get some interesting lines where the paint settles around it.
Yes, I wondered that too, I'll give it a try and see. I would like to keep those intense lines where the folds in the plastic were. Maybe just set it aside for a week before removing the plastic so it dries that way?
These are beautiful. Thank you for sharing your tips and lessons. Just a question please, I'm a newbie to the craft sorry, can I apply these tricks on stretched canvas? please
when you use these materials, does it affect the light fastness of artist-quality paint and the durability of the high-quality paper i.e. Arches? Would you use these techniques mainly for things like cards that are temporary in nature, rather than for W/C shows/jurying, etc.? Thanks!
Thanks for these awesome tricks! I wonder if you've ever left the plastic wrap on the card until it's totally dry so that the texture shows up? I'm wondering if it works like it does without wrapping it? Thx!
The salt effect is really cool. I am not convinced about the bleach. With your "regular water colour effect" you don't just dab paint on, you make broad strokes, so of course the effect is different. It's not an adequate copmparison. I find that if you dab on watercolours on normal water-soaked paper it does look petty much like your bleach effect.
That was so interesting an inspiring as a base for making pictures. Your kindness and calm makes it relaxing, easy and enjoyable to learn. Bless you for that xo
Cool!! I've used course salt with dye on silk and bleach by itself with ink from pads but never used these with watercolor. I want to play and experiment with these techniques!!
Awesome! i had to gave it a try, my fav. is the one with Bleach on the water & salt, Thank You so much for sharing these great Demos of giving textures to my pictures, love your Fantastic tutorial Teela, and i'm so Glad having click on your page, i have subscribes and can't wait to see all of your tutorials, xx
Thank you so much for the 3rd trick!!! You do not know how much I needed some quick splash art even though I had no background whatsoever in anything art-related!!!
this is so cool! as a total newbie to watercolour, is it possible to layer these techniques at all? like if you wanted to get the salt/bleach explosion look over a background with the saran wrap, can you wait for the background layer to dry and then add little explosions? or would that not work? thanks!
Always try out all of your ideas! That's what makes us artists, no fear only fun. Of course you want to experiment on 'experiment priced' scrap paper. Tell us or show us how they turn out. 😎😃 & yes, bone dry between layers unless you want bleeding or blending...
Caroline Honse , you can also drop paint onto the paper first (wet the paper slightly with a clear wash of water), drop on color, take a rectangle of saran wrap, crumple it a bit , place on top of the water color, press slightly and let it dry. Lovely effects.
Great, this is the first video where Salt and Bleach Solutions are used for good dispersion of pigment. Also the use of plastic wrap is inverted here with advantage. Other demos simply paint and put the plastic wrap on the top. Great going. Thanks
Your video was AMAZING!!!!! I just picked up my paint brush since August and I am so excited to try these!!!!!! You seem extremely experienced and I can't wait to see if you have more videos on painting tricks and tips!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the interesting tips. I suggest letting the paint under the plastic wrap dry. That way you retain the interesting shapes made by the plastic.
Interesting textures, thank you! Just a note, though -- the long-term effects of household bleach on paper is quite destructive. So if you are wanting to keep your work around a long time, and especially if you sell to others, keep this in mind. I've read salt is not as bad for paper over time, but YMMV.
I LIKE THE SALTWATER TRICK, THIS LOOKS LIKE MORNING GLORIES AND THE BLEACH TRICK IS COOL, TOO....IF YOU DO THE WRAP USUALLY YOU LET IT DRY AND YOU GET A REAL NICE EFFECT, TOO.....TFS

Saw this video quite a long time ago. I searched for it again because I was just asked to do art workshops in my community center. Thanks for the tips! Will be using these!
Those all look amazing, and I really liked the looks and effects that the salt water and bleach gave the artwork, but it did not work for me. The last one with the plastic wrap worked well. Do you have any suggestions that would help for the other two methods??
Teela.... This was great... I didn't know about putting SALT in the water first.... "So Cool" .... I have one for you.... Put normal water down first (like you're doing a water line, next to a shore and you're going to do the reflexion in the water... Put the normal water where you'd do the reflection, then put Gum Arabic over that (it is clear) ... then gently put your Watercolor color on that... the effects are Beautiful... it crystal out... or like a spider effect... ;)
Gum arabic is basically a glue that your watercolor paints are made from: gum arabic + pigments. But you can buy it separately as a liquid or powder (to add in the water you use while painting). It makes blending and colour lifting much easier. Experiment!
Thank you! I like this plastic wet technique. If I let the plastic dry on the paper there is a different effect. It is good to have different techniques. I enjoy collaging and art journaling.
That was nice, the only thing I would have been curious about was the saran wrap and if you would have let it set overnight, then those lovely dark lines would have remained and dried wonderfully, thanks, nice video.
I tried the vodka technique for doing a painting. While I really, truly enjoyed using my watercolors, I'm reluctant to report my painting ended up looking like a Picasso (hiccup), which wasn't the look I was after. Also, upon waking 3 hours later, my watercolor painting had a strange imprint of a nose, mouth & chin. Next time I'll mix the vodka into the paint! (*grin*) All kidding aside---thanks for posting your 3 great techniques!
I used bleach, I also used bleach and even then I didn't get this "explosion" result I was very frustrated because I was delighted with the effect in the video ☹️
Wow this looks such fun, I must experiment with these brilliant ideas. I wonder if you can get different results with different types of salts. Perfect for fun art during school holidays. Thanks so much x🌸
With the plastic wrap , if you leave the wrap on overnight for the paint to dry , and then remove when dry , you will retain all the interesting pockets , lines and structures , instead of all the paint just flowing back in together while it’s wet - 😊
I use a Pierce of glass instead.

Sontos, thank you...love this idea, and info, I will try this for sure!
How much borax do you add to the 1 1/2 cup?
Is borax salt the same thing as 20 Muleteam Borax?
sea salt also works like that :)
What is borax salt? I've never heard of it

Very interesting ideas, thank you! Just one note: you shouldn't leave your brushes in the water like that since it might get damaged.
Yes! Def agree, and those babies left those cups as soon as the tut was over - limited space and time when recording :)

Such a good video ! Quite amazing , the effects , yet simple . Thanks so much 🙏. Clear instructions , no music suddenly blasting my ears . Love it . ❤💞
These ideas were awesome especially live the Saran Wrap one.. I could concentrate on what you were saying and doing without music distracting me.
The cling wrap turns out so cool!

Have u tried wax paper? pretty cool effect there too same as the sarran...no need for watering the area...Thank you just love it

I absolutely agree with Maria Walker.

Sprinkling salt is cool too but saltwater is so neat

Hi

One more idea. Let the Saran wrap stay on the paper till the paint is dry then lift off for more distinct shapes.
I was inspired to try then I decided to see what eyeglass cleaner does. It worked awesome as an additive for guick drying smooth base wash.
Great ideas.

Cally Lawson yes or putting the paint on the paper and then adding the wrap.

That's a more commonly known technique - wanted to share another spin on it :)

do you have to use watercolors on certain types of paper?
watercolor paper will always be best for watercolors, so that's what I recommend, though you can always experiment with whatever you have on hand!
Thank you for the interesting tips. I suggest letting the paint under the plastic wrap dry. That way you retain the interesting shapes made by the plastic.

I've heard that once the chlorine gas off vents/evaporates all that is left is water.
im an older person going back to some watercolor thanks looks like fun

Ooh yeah
Really love the plastic wrap idea! Giving that a go! Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if you experience any brush damage using bleach? I like the salt water idea.
Julia Walsh
just in case, I'd use an old brush that doesn't matter to much.
What is "bleach" ?
