Im very glad I found this channel in regards to 4K Bluray reviews. Very big factor in whether I buy a new movie that comes out. Thanks for the quick and honest reviews here!
I saw this film in theatres back when it came out. I really enjoyed this film. And when you said that the live action real world scenes were soft and grainy, where as the OASIS scenes were basically reference quality, I think that may have been intended. Spielberg had wanted the real world to look dull and boring to emphasize what was happening in the real world. So the fact that it sounds they left the real world bits fairly soft I feel was a neat and pretty cool thing to do if it was indeed intended
I think it was an intentional choice to make the real world scenes more filmic and grainy to show the way the characters felt about it and that the Oasis is a better place.
This is now my second favourite goto film for 4k+HDR, and boy OH boy that bass when that bomb goes off holy crap :) , but my favourite Disc is still blade runner 2049.
I do wonder if the difference in video quality was on purpose, like you state it would make sense. As a previous poster said it reminds him of the wizard of Oz and I always thought that the black and white to colour was the magic of Oz....maybe the sharpness in image quality is to represent the magic of the oasis? Great review as always, think this will defo be a day 1 pick up 😉
I can’t be the only one watching this review who has an Atmos 7.1.4 setup at home.. The film is certainly a demo for everyone with some great effects throughout
This is the first atmos movie I watched . The first race scene in chapter 2, is my go to scene when showing off atmos. We have rewatched the movie several times. The whole family loves it!
i watched on iTunes. the dolby atmos track is one of the best i've heard. I loved the clarity in the audio. The bass also wasn't overpowering or too much. for that reason i'd give it a 10 for audio.
I find it funny people find grain such a turn off, i find the insane clarity of digital to be more off putting. I saw Ready Player One and Avengers IW in the same week, thought the photography of IW was distracting because there was too much clarity, where as the film parts of Ready Player One had a really organic blend of the background/focus, although they did tend to have some soft focus which is inherent on anamorphic 35mm. Of course this is coming from someone who prefers the look of film, even though I do like digital too.
I just saw your comment. I thought the same thing. Maybe they intentionally did the live action shots his way. Gives it that 80s feel. Looking forward to purchasing this when it comes out in the United States.
I have the lg sk9y with the spk8-s you review and had a very please experience with the sound watching Ready Player One. I really liked it. For me it was even better that what I got from blade runner 2049.
I just picked up this UHD Blu Ray after watching this review, was excited to watch only for my player to tell me "disc doesn't meet specifications", I bought it used as it was £12 as opposed to £25 new, going to take it back for a new copy and hopefully it'll work.
Just watched it. The grain is definitely intentional. Spielberg usually has a reason to do such things. Like taking out 40% of the color in Saving Private Ryan. Munich looks like it was filmed in the late 70's or early 80's. The little girl's red dress in Schindler's List.
Hey can u review the 4k player of Samsung bdu m9700. I saw it at best buy and didn't know it existed. I tried to look up on UA-cam and Google but oddly there is barely anything of it. Especially Samsung's own UA-cam channel
Every time I'm at best buy looking for 4k movies to buy I always pass on this film, since i Love 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray i think I'm finally gonna buy this movie in 4k and check it out 👍👍👍
Do you think that maybe the choice of a more grainy real world was intentional. It seemed like it was supposed to be very bleak and gritty to me that's what I took out of it at least.
SpareChange Shane great review as usual, i am telling you 3D was not worth it a huge disappointment + minus Dolby Atmos track on 3D so i am going for UHD
What happens when. you view a Dolby vision movie on an HDR 10 tv, do you basically get a non HDR color at all, or Is there some just not as pronounced as watching on a Dolby vision tv?
there are several HDR formats being used on 4K UHD discs. Dolby Vision is just one of them. HDR10 is NOT the same as Dolby Vision. in order to see Dolby Vision you need a Dolby Vision Movie, a Dolby Vision compatible BD player and a Dolby Vision compatible Display. The same goes for watching 3D movies. you need the entire chain... disc-player-display
4k does not exist to make the original cinematography turn into a super sharp game - its exists to best preserve and show the directors and DPs original intentions from lense choice to stock choices.. Its obvious the style was deliberately chosen and it looked exactly like this in the cinema.. Why do youtube reveiwers seem to think every film should look like a pixar release.
I don't get it either. They expect movies shot on film to look digital for some reason. And I think reviews like that spoil the movie for people that don't know any better.
Why does IMDb say this has a 4K DI ??? I know being user edited ppl think it's not accurate but I'm pretty sure that's a myth and you need some evidence to submit shit 🤷♂️
Is it just me or is the movie extreme dark? I have no issues with any other 4k disk when it Comes to brightness, but this one.....when i compare it to movies like John wick 2 or even ghostbusters, there is no match in HDR and bright Picture. It is a pity, because i had such high expectations.
*If you guys watch the extras they explain the live action scenes was meant to be intentionally gritty looking*

I've never enjoyed a movie as thoroughly as I enjoyed this one and I'm 53.... and seen a few movies, lol

Jack Mosley thats exactly what i was thinking when i saw it in dolby cinema
Definitely intentional. Spielberg knows what he's doing.
Jack Mosley on point sir, agreed!
good point
This is now my second favourite goto film for 4k+HDR, and boy OH boy that bass when that bomb goes off holy crap :) , but my favourite Disc is still blade runner 2049.
Average O.B can’t wait to try this one out! 2049 is also my go to disc, so if you say it’s good I trust you!
the first Pacific Rim 4k movie is my goto for showing off. Haven't seen a Blu ray (4k or otherwise) come close to that kind of clarity on a disc.
I do wonder if the difference in video quality was on purpose, like you state it would make sense. It was. It's explained in the behind the scenes.

Great review, was hoping for a crystal clear image throughout but.. Will for sure pick this one up anyway.
Picking this up! Great review once again Shane! 👍
Thanks!

the race scene is a breathtaking sequence only to be best experienced in dolby atmos
Ahhh shane, why do you always make me wait 4 your 3D review??😂😂❤

0:55 definitely sounds like an artistic choice to me.
Man you got me excited for this one great job as always
I watched this in 3D AVX when it came out and it was GLORIOUS.
First to the key...first to the egg!
Thanks Shane another great video but I will wait for your 3D review before I decide .
This movie reminds me so much of The Wizard (1989), lol. 😀
yes, an awsome atmos track.
I just saw your comment. I thought the same thing. Maybe they intentionally did the live action shots his way. Gives it that 80s feel. Looking forward to purchasing this when it comes out in the United States.
Good review! I was worried about this movie.
Another great review Shane!!!
The Atmos track on this movie is too good. I always end up coming back to this movie.
I have the lg sk9y with the spk8-s you review and had a very please experience with the sound watching Ready Player One. I really liked it. For me it was even better that what I got from blade runner 2049.
Awesome Shane.

Nice done Shane thanks!
I love the all the Easter eggs in the movie, and I thought the sound was fantastic 👍🏼
I didn't hear the height speakers at all. But I was sitting far from the sweetspot. I might have to give these scenes another go.
This is already out? My target exclusive pre order says it’s not coming until July 24th
27th

Shane, did you get the US copy of Ready Player One? Did it come with a 3D Blu-ray disc like WB claimed?
Yes pls do a 3d review, lets know if there is any pop up or depth on it we will apretiate it 😃
Is this worth the upgrade from the regular blu ray?
thanks for the review.
Can't wait to enjoy this one .
Hey can u review the 4k player of Samsung bdu m9700. I saw it at best buy and didn't know it existed. I tried to look up on UA-cam and Google but oddly there is barely anything of it. Especially Samsung's own UA-cam channel
John Arevalo just buy a Xbox one s....
What's the background music??! It was so catchy and distracting from Shane's review. In a good way..
Chris Hernandez joking?
should i take as 3D-Fan only the 3D Version or the 4K too?
Every time I'm at best buy looking for 4k movies to buy I always pass on this film, since i Love 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray i think I'm finally gonna buy this movie in 4k and check it out 👍👍👍
This movie was a lot of fun
Looks like a fun movie
Do you think that maybe the choice of a more grainy real world was intentional. It seemed like it was supposed to be very bleak and gritty to me that's what I took out of it at least.
I believe I mentioned that in the review.
i love ready player one im deff copying this
Johnnyboy33 copying?

You get regular HDR.
I hate seeing the 4k review, looking at the amazon release date and find out i have to wait at least 1-1.5 month
I'm confused, is this movie in HDR or Dolby Vision? My tv goes to HDR when i'm playing my disk version of the movie. Or are they the same?
there are several HDR formats being used on 4K UHD discs. Dolby Vision is just one of them. I don't get why people don't actually listen to the review.
so if only half the movie is 4K, shouldn't the disc be half price ???
I read the book and loved it but not the movie so much, I think it kind of sucks
Seen this in Hollywood in 70mm film😉 was waiting for this in 4K to see the difference good review😃👍
It's not refence for audio for me.
QUESTION:
Has anyone experienced the 4K version to be much DARKER than the blu rat counterpart??
Why does IMDb say this has a 4K DI ???
I know being user edited ppl think it's not accurate but I'm pretty sure that's a myth and you need some evidence to submit shit 🤷♂️
4K crisp....4K crisp
?
It's starting to appear that 4k bluray consistency is just as unreliable and random as standard bluray...disappointing really
4k crisp you say...ummm 2k DI...ok do tell...?
I’m getting the feeling you hate film and grain? Honestly every single frame of this movie looks crisp on my OLED. ...Atmos is demo material too.
Everything looks good on a small tv.
@@therealshanelee LOL yeah tell that to my old 17” tube, projectors are nice but quality is better on a tv.
@@MrNiceKnife depends who you ask.
I'm not surprised. When I saw this in the AMC Dolby theater, the live action scenes didn't really blow me away in the visual department.
I loved this movie I thought the atmos track on this was better than power rangers
Is it just me or is the movie extreme dark? I have no issues with any other 4k disk when it Comes to brightness, but this one.....when i compare it to movies like John wick 2 or even ghostbusters, there is no match in HDR and bright Picture. It is a pity, because i had such high expectations.
Yeah same I pirated this movie and not sure if it's just the pirated copy or if the physical copy is the same as the pirated one.
The real life shots are unwatchable. The grain is real and it is just so frustrating to watch while you bought a 4k bluray =/
First yayayaya
