    • @stevenfarrington2361
      @stevenfarrington2361 6 років тому +17

      The pop culture references are a red herring. What the book/film said about future society avoiding reality by immersing itself in VR both fascinated and frightened me. The key to the Oasis is the fact that players can earn money there which can be transferred to the real world. If this becomes a reality the Oasis will consume entire generations of humans for real.
      My son showed me a livestream of the #1 ranked Fortnite player and how he attracts celebs and serious income through his livestreams. Turning this from content creation to the Oasis business model is the missing link that will make some genius a billionaire just like the fictitious Halliday.

      The concepts are amazing and prophetic to be sure. The actual story of the film in terms of character development, emotional engagement... was bland and forgettable to me. Was that better done in the book?

    • @Nick-jb4xi
      @Nick-jb4xi 3 роки тому +2

      @@vincer7824 - Absolutely! The film didn't even properly develop the SETTING. The characters were badly butchered, if they were developed at all.
      The book was also far more exciting in my view, with much higher stakes and more danger at almost every turn.
      It is my absolute favorite book. I gave it out as presents and every single person told me later that it was great. The movie is an instantly forgettable 'spectacle'...

      not really, the reason why it was genius was because that in one of Spielberg's interviews about Kubrick he told Spielberg that when he's making a future film he wanted him to re-make a scene from 'The Shining' to *entertain* people and make 'The Shining' more popular

  • @orgixvi3
    @orgixvi3 6 років тому +224

    I honestly feel like you're being too lenient on this movie. While visually spectacular, using the limits of CGI to enforce the uncanny valley to its benefit, the story is really lacking, and the characters honestly fall flat imo. I can't tell you a single thing I really remember about any of the main characters besides H, and I only saw it last night as of writing this comment.
    The moment that movie really fell apart (in my opinion anyway), was the moment Parzival told Artemis he loves her in that dance club. They'd only known each other a grand total of something like 5 hours, maximum, in-universe. At least in the book they actually dated for something like 6 months. The time compression that the movie underwent really did nothing to help the story. 5 years of build-up, solved in like a week.
    I feel like overall, the movie is really bittersweet. Visually stunning, but boring.

    • @12ealDealOfficial
      @12ealDealOfficial 6 років тому +18

      I agree, though I would say the film is the annoying, polar extreme opposite of boring- it's frantic; too much is going on in the action scenes, and anything that isn't action gets way too much camera movement or is cut too tightly. The characters get flung together into a space where there's no room to breathe, almost as if someone was in the editing room shaving off individual frames to move every scene along as quickly as possible.

    • @orgixvi3
      @orgixvi3 6 років тому +8

      Oh, no, I agree. The pacing is unrelenting, and the real life sets are cramped. But I think the cramped irl sets were done intentionally, to make the Oasis feel that much more freeing than the drab of everyday life. Hell, even the grey filter over the non-Oasis scenes makes it more obvious.

    • @orgixvi3
      @orgixvi3 6 років тому +10

      However, what I was calling boring was the story itself. It was bland and pretty uninteresting.

      i can agree , they foreshadowed his paparazzi infatuation for Artemis duirng the race. The book did a much better job of showing how wade was a fanatic follower of hers before they ever met. He had posters of artemis in H's basement. So in the movie it wasnt explained that he was a fan of hers for years.

  • @LavenderLydia

    I love how deep the analysis was, but you were really robotic. Part of the reason I watch you and other UA-cam reviewers is to hear the passion and drive in the review as opposed to a more dry critique like we can get elsewhere. It was very well put together, but I felt like you were reading an essay you were assigned to complete.

    Honestly, I prefer seeing you when you're reviewing a movie. Facial expressions help a lot in understanding your experience. This format is fine as well, but only for listening. As I often try to avoid watching too many trailers for a movie, this makes me look away whenever someone is using footage in their review as I can never be sure they will only use shots from the first trailer.

      Alan Lamprecht I agree, that's a good point. And I don't think it gets in the way, Chris's reviews are usually well structured and insightful. It's just a bonus. Seeing him speaking is like listening to a friend when discussing a movie. Also, to restate what I said before, more Chris=less trailer footage that I don't want to see, but that is my case. Perhaps, the majority actually wants to see it, then it would be smart to follow that approach.

    Spoilers: This is the first review I’ve watched of yours. For me, this review is not reflective of the movie. The narrative is lost in favour of tension created through chases; copper key chase, IOI/rebellion chase, Mailvan/IOI chase. Many key elements of the book were neglected to the detriment of the movie. The obsession with 80s culture was almost entirely replaced with generic pop culture references. The addictive elements of the books, the puzzles, were absent. The gates weren’t even in the film. The climax to the players meeting in real life was haphazardly thrown in half way. Thing is, the book was an adult 80s obsessed power fantasy written at barely a young adult level. I really thought the film would redeem the flaws in the novel. It didn’t. I watched the movie and felt nostalgic for the book. Spielberg, not your best effort by a long, long shot.

    • @DigitalPsyche
      @DigitalPsyche 6 років тому +15

      Crispman 777 Yes, it’s bad, but only in terms of a lack of sophistication. It’s an easy read for the young reader, although the subject matter can be adult. The idea is kind of fun, the puzzles, etc. The characters are meh at best, but you get a better sense of connection and dynamic than in the movie. The book also has a little bit of SJW in it that the movie leaves out. It’s a good fan fic, essentially. Parzival is certainly a Gary Stu. Knowing what I know now, I’d watch the movie then read the book, if I had any interest in the concept.

    I had never heard of the movie and watched it without much expectations because I watch any SF-movie on TV. Gradually I started to think this was by far the best part of the whole fall day which had been dark, gloomy and windy. Later I discovered this was from Spielberg and this explained a lot. I even didn't notice it was so long. It's best seen in theatre I guess. 3D is probably great but also very exhausting.

      Darklightau I mean, it’s called having any opinion tbh...if you don’t agree with him, then you can just always watch another movie critic that falls in line with your own viewpoints and expectations. Doesn’t make much sense to watch one that doesn’t.
      And he did criticize Pacific Rim Uprising and give it a C-, which was his review before this one. He also criticized that recent horror movie with the masked killers (honestly can’t remember the name) and gave it a D.
      Also, he gave The Last Jedi an A-, which I honestly agree with since besides the Finn+Rose side plot essentially being filler and giving the movie awful pacing, I honestly wholeheartedly enjoyed it.

      My reviews are in this format. For me it takes about 2-3 hours to edit the video (depending on the complexity of any jokes or rarity of footage and having to cut around things). Writing the review takes 1-2 hours, recording the voiceover takes around 20-40 minutes and exporting takes around 30 minutes. So all in all I'd say this process (at least for me, I can't imagine Chris' is much different) takes around 6-8 hours.

    I spend a lot of time playing VR games and games such as VRChat. I basically called it VRChat: the Movie. Because... my experience in that game is this. Meeting people and becoming best friends when I've never seen their face, meeting a girl in game then in real life, being surrounded by characters from every bit of entertainment you can imagine, the interactions. They nailed it all. Instead of going through the movie noticing the references, I noticed the feelings instead. I found myself saying "that's so true" to so many different interactions and that's what made me love this movie. They really did their homework on this one, and because I relate to it so well its easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

    • @MelMelodyWerner
      @MelMelodyWerner 6 років тому +6

      Mundy. Medics Would probably be nostalgic in the future world that RP1 is set in (then again, RP1 was all about specifically 80's nostalgia, so let's be honest: Tracer, Iron Giant, etc. don't fit at all).

    • @MundyMedics
      @MundyMedics 6 років тому +1

      That's a good point! It just feels very manipulative and cashgrabby for such a recent character to be shoved in there so last second. But like you said, not everone fits.

    • @Slimshadow457
      @Slimshadow457 6 років тому +4

      Shoe horned? Isn't that a bit harsh? Shoe horned implies it's been contrived in the story and is forced in there, and sticks out like a sore thumb. Tracer is in 3 shots of this movie. She has an incredibly emotive design, so it must be fun for animators to work her in. It's not as if the plot revolved around her, the character model just shows up a few times.
      Also, she's not right in front of the crowded scene, if you want a slight spoiler, that scene has SEVERAL cut-aways, showing the different character models rushing into battle. One of those has Tracer. (and Chun Li!)
      Finally, in 2045, Tracer is a nostalgic, beloved character. Yes. I can totally believe that. She's not from the 80s, but neither is the Oasis. The fascination from the 80s only comes from the main characters, and the creator of the Oasis. Would make sense that in a virtual world, some kids might not care for old school stuff and might just prefer more modern heroes they grew up with?

      FuzzzWuzzz In the book, most people controlled their character's movements through their haptic gloves, like game controllers, so they could do everything they wanted in the oasis while still sitting on a chair. Some people could afford better rigs, and these included the omni-directional threadmills that let them walk and run, simulating a more rral experience, but they were strapped to harnesses in a secure room or area while doing so. The fact that people where just running around in real life in the movie was really stupid, "unrealistic" and honestly, even dangerous. It made no sense. But then again, most of the movie realy doesn't, sadly.

    Holy shit, this format is so much better. I love it. So many more solid points are made rather than you just repeating the plot and cast of the movie for half the review. It seems much more thought out and thorough. Hope you do more like this. 👌

    Really liked this format. You have a really good voice and with this format your delivery is more focused and less prone to repeating yourself.

    Finally some Akira recognition. Speaking of, Chris you should do a review of Akira. Seriously I know so many “fans” of anime that have never even heard of it or know of its impact. Get the word out and educate!

      it is the only anime where you can say "the manga was better" but the anime is worth watching.

      A lot of "fans" of anime only like the new stuff, they weren't around for Toonami and the Digimon vs. Pokemon days. One of the last clips in the review shows a Gundam, but disappointed by the lack of an Eva unit.

      Ochinpo movie is great, but the manga is still better for more development of characters and expansion on the story.

      lain iwakura to be fair though the movie is mostly about 80’s nostalgia, and Gundam is an influential classic much like EVA.

      to bad we won't get real life version, have to agree its movie can't be remade the original movie and manga are still the best, but get to see the bike was nice

    The 80's were the pinnacle of American culture, now we are in the Dark Ages.

    Watched it today and thought it was brilliant. Sure, there are some cringey scenes that could've been improved but the visuals, actions and the scene transitions between virtual and reality are top notch. There are a few flaws in the movie and with some unanswered q but for someone who hasn't read the book, it is a good watch.

    Chris i gotta say this is one of your best reviews. The language you use as well as your precise opinions are amazing. I hope you can do more reviews like this in the future!

    When I first saw the movie,I couldn't help but be reminded of the headline for Cinefantastique's review of "Tron"...."So what if it's dumb,it's a dazzling light show."

    Prefer seeing your face when you talk mixed in with clips. And actually, in this one, you can tell that you're reading. It doesn't sound as organic as your usual videos, where you're just talking naturally. I've always been impressed by how concise you are in your reviews without a script.

    Silvestri is a much better choice to score a "techy" film like this anyway.

      Silvestri is perfect for it, I think. Especially considering so many of the references are from films he composed for. He has a very distinctive sound, to be sure.

    This format might be good for the text to seem more articulated, but for someone like myself that likes to stay away from images of trailers and other stuff (that you often recomend, actually) it kind of sucks, because I have to only listen and I really like to have something visual accompanying the sound. Also, I prefer the other format because you seem more spontaneous so it feels like a real conversation, a real person, and that makes it way more compelling. Keep up the good work. You're my favorite movie reviewer on youtube. ;)

    I LOVED Ready Player One. It was so great seeing all the characters crossover, but I also really enjoyed the characters and story. The Oasis was so cool and the animation was stunning. Spielberg still has it!
