  • Geordie forward Peter Beardsley dribbled and shimmied his way to 175 games and 59 goals in a red shirt, winning two leagues and claiming an FA Cup along the way.
    Kenny Dalglish broke what was then the British transfer record by paying Newcastle £1.9m for Beardsley's services in July 1987.
    A unique talent in English football, Beardsley was a diminutive number 10 with a thunderous shot and great skill on the ball.

    I had the pleasure of watching Beardsley and Barnes at villa park as a youngster..... Then out of nowhere I bumped into Peter Beardsley and his daughter at alton Towers queuing for the thunderelooper, and gave me the time of day..... A legend

      @@chrismac2234 It's a misconception to say the pitches were "terrible" in the late 80's. They had gotten much better by then. The video clearly shows this. There were some that got a bit dodgy but for the most part, the pitches were actually quite good.

    Leeds here: I think Dalglish, as manager, created the best club team/squad I think I've ever seen. I was in my early 20's and was in awe of this team of mercurial talents. The players in that squad which Dalglish melded were unbelievable. They were almost psychic in knowing what to do at such speed without looking for each other. Phenomenal: Me and my mate, both Leeds followers said that the 5-0 caning of Forest in a league game (I think) said that was the best game we'd ever seen. I couldn't identify, or single out out, any individual because, as a team, they were mesmeric. Alex Ferguson knew who he had to beat, to emulate, to be the man who created the next generation, but to me, being a football 'fan', this topped everything.
    To you lucky scousers who were there, witnessing this poetry, history will be told of such genius talent and outright passion.
    Football now is full of cheats; falling and collapsing at being brushed or even breathed upon. I can't even watch games any more. I don't even recognise it as a viable sporting entertainment, and when we discuss England with their current incumbent manager...well, I'd rather remember that 5-0 demolition of football purity.

Work rate, bags of skill, seemed to be four passes ahead of everybody, Took the piss out of Scholes when we hammered man u 5-0. Scored over 200 goals in the top flight, not bad for an ugly midget from Newcastle.

    I have a feeling that Peter Beardsley had a perfectly good goal ruled out during Liverpool's 1988 FA Cup Final against Wimbledon.
    If I remember correctly, Beardsley managed to stay on his feet,inspite of a foul by the Wimbledon defender, Andy Thorn,I think, and then race away to score past Wimbledon goalie, Dave Beasant,only for that thick crud of a referee,Brian Hill, to disallow the goal, and bring back the play for a Liverpool free kick

    • @thenomad525
      @thenomad525 6 років тому +5

      And a fine goal it was too. Delicate deft chip over the advancing Beasant, reminiscent of Dalglish's winner vs Bruges ten years earlier. Referee Hill knew he cocked up.

    I found on a UA-cam video clip of Peter Beardsley that he was regarded as being England's answer to Lionel Messi. I can understand why.
    First of all, both players had a low centre of gravity, they both had great footwork and dribbling skills.
    Both were great passers of the ball, and when it came to shooting, both of them needed little back lift when it came to unleashing a shot at goal.
    Beardsley would, however, shade it for me, in that he was a better two footed player than Messi, whilst Messi was practically reliant on his left foot
