I picked up Persona 1 on a whim back in the late 90s; I liked playing RPGs and Persona 1 in particular stood out for me. Persona 2 is still my favorite game to this day but I've played all of them and they haven't disappointed.
Seriously good stuff. It's about time someone took the Persona stories and looked at them beyond skin-deep. I'm only sad it didn't start off with Shin Megami Tensei itself, but all in due time I guess. Also I'm reminded how the first SMT takes a looot out of old Dungeons & Dragons(the original 1974 edition), which also relied on the alignment of Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic, and where the modus operandi was, in fact, also to dungeon crawl and negotiate with monsters, convincing them to join your cause! It's honestly one of the truest simulations of oldschool D&D made into a video game.
I really love how you took the time to discuss Carl Jung's impact on the philosophy of these games. I'm really into his work so that's much appreciated mentioning that, really high quality stuff! Also here's to Persona 1, I love that game!
I actually want some of that stuff in SMT. It’s a extremely unexplained and unrepresented part of psychology that’s honestly fascinating to me. Maybe a social link that touches upon that. They aren’t afraid with getting uncomfortable with some of the subject matter in the games and SMT is probably one of the only series that Freudian Psychology could fit in.

These are the best videos I’ve ever seen explaining things about the megaten universe. I’ve Already seen all of them and I’m here commenting to encourage you to Keep on uploading them!
In Italy we have a writer that perfectly frame this mask theory called Pirandello, lived in the 20th century, at first I thought the concept was taken inspired from him... Still very fascinating, great video
How is this so incredibly underrated? I literally fell in love with this video. Thank you so much for creating this! I can't properly express how well done this video is.
The "localized" character redesigns STINK! I'm glad they went back to using the original character designs in part 2 & on 21:41 is it just me, or does the Deva System look a LOT like the Death Star Tractor Beam emitter?
Awesome work on this series, I'll be checking out each installment. You definitely deserve a sub. I got into Persona later than a lot of my friends but now that I'm a fan I really want to check out it's origins. Funny enough, it feels like I was always going to be a fan. I even share a birthday with the inspiration behind the series Carl Jung.
Dude..I'm just getting into this series and was considering making some videos about it but my god, I feel as though you've said it all. This video is incredible and I can't wait to watch more of your work. I don't know if I'll end up making any videos on this series but I do know that the passion on display in your work has inspired me. Thank you and keep it up!!
This is just a fantastic look at the series, I have been playing games for decades but somehow the Persona series escaped me until recently, now I have to play them.
Excited to see P3's analysis. P3 FES' the answer got me interested in the effects of desire and human condition how the human mind is keeping locked away a primal evil. The game had made me change the way I thought about myself and how I think.
It is they who said "Persona 5 is the best persona, the storyline was (blah99x overprouding the game)." Ofc cuz it is released on PS4. I wanna remake the 1st two so badly
Am i going to hear some folk talking about Persona 1 for almost two hours? The answer is hell yeah. It was a pretty good take on how the series begun and how much it took for Megaten to come to the west, and the analisis on themes of the game and psichology were pretty joyful to hear, a really good video all around. If i have to take something to grasp it would be the ending and this is my personal take on it, like you say in the bad ending of the game your character doesn´t learn nothing and for that he can´t release his full potential but here is the kicker not everyone made it to that ending, Maki or Mary is nowhere to be seen and it´s implied that she died(full especulation on that part) but even if she lives trough her sickness, you destroy her multiples selfs and killed her mother what turns you... well into a monster. So in my opinion you´re not the same person at the end of boths endings. now to part 2
Thank fuck somebody acknowledges the existence of Shin Megami Tensei If.... I've just about grown really tired of telling people it's the 1st actual Persona game that isn't a Persona game. I wish it would get localized or fan translated so i could play it. This video is a godsend, thank you so freaking much, i can't accurately express the ammount of gratitude i am feeling towards you right now. For the longest time i was actually angry that Persona 1 and 2:IS and 2:EP have gone overlooked , despite of Persona 5's popularity. Like, i love P3, 4 and 5, but i want Persona 1 and 2IS and 2EP to be recognized as the great games they really are. Maybe they're dated today, but their writing is honestly impressive for their time period. Especially Persona 2 and ESPECIALLY Innocent Sin. I'm still surprised at the balls that game had.
25:14 something about the manga I wish you’d mentioned was Kandori saying he took measures to ensure maki was safe until his death, minor as it is, that alone shows how he had capacity for kindness that he never even noticed before he became apathetic and realized the error of his ways
Damm.. i wish the tracks from Revelation was in Original Persona PSP. I'm glad i got to play the original game. But im not a fan of the j-pop. Some of the tracks were catchy. But i feel like they don't match the theme of the game. Overall good video!
@@kosmic100 To be fair I thought it was nice. They had most of the crew there to work on the remake. So the decision to change it was made by key members of the original team. I think the idea was to bring it more in line with the P3 and P4 soundtracks. In many ways it felt more natural to me.
@@kosmic100 We often see things out of place when we grew up with something different. I heard some people complain about the writing in the remake despite the fact that what we got was a butchered version of the Original game on PS1.

love the video, but I'm surprised you didn't talk about threat escalation, wherein most RPG and stores the great threat would be an evil newborn god seeking to rewrite the world, (most every JRPG final boss) Person doesn't stop there and it argues the worse threat comes from within having the final battle be about helping a friend discover her true self. because this is what the story is realy about.
Awesome video dude! My first game I played in the series was persona 5, but I like to go look at gameplay of the older persona and some smt games. Future research reveled that it contain cognitive data in form of dreamlike reality. He start exploring this "Expanse" using volunteers from occult, until one day teleportation accident summon the demon into real world. He was crimpled and his higher ups attempted to usurp technology for malicious reasons. As such he destroy the data and hide himself in Expanse, leaking program what could activate system remotely. Corporation owning system attempt to take control with security AI, but it was destroyed by random teenagers transposing Expanse (post-apocalyptic Tokyo). These are the best videos I’ve ever seen explaining things about the megaten universe. I’ve Already seen all of them and I’m here commenting to encourage you to Keep on uploading them!
Dude this kept me up, I wanna watch all of your videos now and I don’t even want to play persona 1, but the psychoanalysis aspect is fascinating.
In Italy we have a writer that perfectly frame this mask theory called Pirandello, lived in the 20th century, at first I thought the concept was taken inspired from him... Still very fascinating, great video
The fact Nyarlathotep appears in Persona 1 is absolutely brilliant. It's set up so incredibly well.
So much research and material to the point that it feels like a professional documentary, +1 like and sub
How is this so incredibly underrated? I literally fell in love with this video. Thank you so much for creating this! I can't properly express how well done this video is.
The "localized" character redesigns STINK! I'm glad they went back to using the original character designs in part 2 & on
21:41 is it just me, or does the Deva System look a LOT like the Death Star Tractor Beam emitter?
How you gonna bash mark like that
Awesome work on this series, I'll be checking out each installment.
I always come back to these videos, Snickety did a great job making them
I’m so glad you talked about what inspired Persona because I am so tired of Jojotards saying Persona is a Jojo reference or how Jojo inspired Persona.
if you tell them persona is better written as well they flip their shit lol
*has Joseph joestar as profile*
@@soliipsiism Hahaha it makes me wonder what happened.
@@soliipsiism 7 months ago and after watching it, yea I can see why lmao
@@tenaciouscreator5787 Well thinking some Jojo fans are big dum dums doesn't mean you can't also be a fan of the series yourself.
Great video! this must have taken a while to put together!
I want to see Philemon again in the next Persona game.
this video really is a work of art.
This is just a fantastic look at the series, I have been playing games for decades but somehow the Persona series escaped me until recently, now I have to play them.
This series is amazing and so are you ❤️
Excited to see P3's analysis. P3 FES' the answer got me interested in the effects of desire and human condition how the human mind is keeping locked away a primal evil. The game had made me change the way I thought about myself and how I think.
Newer persona fans be like "What's a Persona 1, 2 Innocent Sin, and 2 Eternal Punishment?"
flapjackxl Or, more realisticly, "Wait, there's TWO Persona games?"
Wait there is Three persona games before P3?
"I thought the series started at Persona 3, like how Final Fantasy started with 7." I assume it's like Ocean's 11, but what would I know.
*"Persona 1 and Persona 2? are those f a n g a m e s ? ?"*
It is they who said "Persona 5 is the best persona, the storyline was (blah99x overprouding the game)." Ofc cuz it is released on PS4.
I wanna remake the 1st two so badly
i can see this video on the discovery channel in like 20 years lol its soo good and the direction and editing are godly.
WOW, this is such a good video... damn. I gotta watch the other parts now holy shit
Thanks for the vid, amazing explanation of all the themes and characters. I might play it myself after I have finished P5!
you really should, they're great
This video is awesome it reminded me why i love persona and smt so much! thanks a lot!!
I really like the editing.
I'm still surprised at the balls that game had.
omg. the american version of P1. it burns.
Yo dawg! We up here in da mean streets of Chicago summonin' personas & shieeeet.
This is an amazing analysis please continue to make these!
This is so well done! I was immediately absorbed. I'm going to watch part 2 right away
Loved this so much, watched it twice to compare with my notes from my first playthrough. Keep it up.
At 10:50 when Monochrome / School theme 2 started playing, it was then I realized that you have good taste in Persona music.
Brilliant, I'm loving binge watching your stuff
25:14 something about the manga I wish you’d mentioned was Kandori saying he took measures to ensure maki was safe until his death, minor as it is, that alone shows how he had capacity for kindness that he never even noticed before he became apathetic and realized the error of his ways
Damm.. i wish the tracks from Revelation was in Original Persona PSP. I'm glad i got to play the original game. But im not a fan of the j-pop. Some of the tracks were catchy. But i feel like they don't match the theme of the game. Overall good video!

I love the psp soundtrack, but it did seem out of place at some places
@@kosmic100 To be fair I thought it was nice. They had most of the crew there to work on the remake. So the decision to change it was made by key members of the original team. I think the idea was to bring it more in line with the P3 and P4 soundtracks. In many ways it felt more natural to me.
@@kosmic100 We often see things out of place when we grew up with something different. I heard some people complain about the writing in the remake despite the fact that what we got was a butchered version of the Original game on PS1.

One of my favorite series on UA-cam always come back to it once in awhile
I am really upset with myself for not having seen these a year ago! These have to be the best SMT videos out there. Currently watching Part 2 and just subscribed, figured I would leave a comment here. Thanks for all the content and good luck with your future projects, will keep an eye out!
Just found this series/channel, having no knowledge of persona pre 3 this is fascinating to me it's clear a lot of time and effort went into this.
Omg I’m finally about to get persona 1 and 2 innocent sin (I’m currently playing eternal punishment) thanks to this compendium...this is my 3rd time watching the compendium and it solidified my choice to play persona 1 and 2
Holy shit, it’s happening. A new upload! I’ve been meaning yo learn more about persona since playing 5
Good timing then!
This was awesome! I wish you the best, you've got the potential to get big.
this video always get me, everytime i pass by it i have to rewatch it and everytime someone asks me abt p1 i have to send this video to'em.
All your videos abt p1 are a delight to watch! I'm looking foward to a next entry on the ultimate persona compendium
Great job! This was amazing!
love the video, but I'm surprised you didn't talk about threat escalation, wherein most RPG and stores the great threat would be an evil newborn god seeking to rewrite the world, (most every JRPG final boss) Person doesn't stop there and it argues the worse threat comes from within having the final battle be about helping a friend discover her true self. because this is what the story is realy about.
Awesome video dude! My first game I played in the series was persona 5, but I like to go look at gameplay of the older persona and some smt games. I've never played the old games but there is a sense of nostalgia in my heart, I bet these games are full of childhood memories for many people. Also I love how in-depth your video was on Jungian psychology. Thank you for the videos dude! p.s does anyone kinow the song playing at 6:55?
It's this song: ua-cam.com/video/XycavGYpdgM/v-deo.html
@@SnicketySlice Thank you!
Jesus! You have really outdone yourself. The intro alone gave me so much joy; and felt like an actual full production documentary. I can already tell this series is gonna skyrocket your channel. Great job, my dude! Can't wait for part 2.
Thanks!
I did used to produce documentaries so that was very much my intention :D
Glad you enjoyed.
How do you not have more subs these videos are so good!!!! I love deep dives on series
I want to play more than p5 and strikers but some of the series entries I would rather have explained like this so videos like this are perfect
ngl, when you called Maki, Mary, it hurted my brain and soul. carry on.
Awesome video! I cannot wait for more!
Really enjoy the video it has been a long time since i was looking for an analysis of a shin megami tensei game. I really wonder why there is not much analysis about those game, it's popular enough and a lot can be said about those game. Any i'm looking forward for your next video.
Thanks! I would guess because it's still a pretty niche series.
@@SnicketySlice Minor correction. SMT: If isn't actually alternative... reality? Title come from movie what was inspiration for this game. Actually profesor Otsuki, who most likely was behind whole event, mention that he did take inspiration from protagonist of first game. As we do know from mainline SMT, Stephen who work on teleportation discovered expanding data cluster after the proces. Same happen also when alternative copies of Expanse were created (SMTIII, DDS). After incident where whole school was teleported into expanse, company SEBEC start researching Demon Summoning Program and create own version known as Deva System, what later was developed by Nanjo (P2) and Kirio Groups (P3), alongside who ever is behind Junes (P4). From Persona V it is implied that Persona System could be reintegrated into main research.
Love these videos! They really make me want to try persona 1 :)
Amazing video! Thank you!
Very well done. Subbed and looking forward to part 2
Thanks. It'll be up in a couple weeks :)
Nice to see a vid on Persona 1. No one ever talks about 1 or 2.
Wow Izanami was in the first game I though she was just the final boss in persona 4
Geez. I came here to try and figure out what happens in Persona 1 without playing it, and I ended up learning about a study on human consciousness.
Not that I’m complaining. It’s all really interesting.
Philemon making the T-pose to impose respect ._.xD
Incredible video! I have loved Persona for years. Sadly P3 and up just became dating sims/less demons/no more demon contracts.
