28:12 A bit late to the party, but... To me, the Augustus Tree seems like a representation of a parental figure. More specifically, a mother. The tree is big, meaning probably old, and old is often associated with wisdom. The tree shows up less and less over time, with appearing only once at the beginning of the final dungeon, similar to how children require a lot of support before being able to stand on their own two feet in the real world. Hell, it's pink, is supportive and literally calls you its children. Sounds very simple compared to everything else, but sometimes life is simple, you know?
I started watching this series because I was thinking about playing Persona games just because everyone says they’re great but now I want to play at least this game because of how insanely convoluted the mechanics are. Peeks my interest
Yeah it´s a shame that the mechanichs aren´t... ideal, not even in it´s PSP remaster and that the game doesn´t encourage you to explore. One of the biggest critizism that this game afront is the fact that a lot of people mark the protagonits of this game as "unidimentional characters" something that it isn´t true. You say that Yukino is a delinquent( being reformed) and a lot of people would miss that because it´s a little side story in a store and the game told them to go to the hospital, and like that a lot of details. I would talk about some mechanichs but you did a really good job covering them, so here is a little advise... people, heal, and heal a lot that is crazy broken. So next stop is the PSP remaster. The version i personally recomend because A) It has the whole story of the game and B) It reduce by a little or speed up the griding towards the end. Of course i have my share of critizism for that remaster but let´s wait to get there, for now i´m curious on how you´re gonna end your perspective on my favorite Persona game. And las bit. Isthe manga out of the question? It has some really neat ideas even if they´re not executed that well and also has some neat art.
I could not care less for the social links (The persona 2 duology games are amazing storywise) but I could literally not care less about any character from persona 1 sans Maki since she's the only one given any depth. With all the others it's only surface deep, Maki's the only one given room to actually develop as a character only because the game is all about her. The game just gives me no reason to care about any of the others and I really don't see what people see in the game outside of if you're a fan of classic SMT dungeon crawling. I'm mostly just saying this out of frustration cus I don't understand and I want to, what in Persona 1 is better than anything that comes after it, in any way?
@@KisekiFox Persona 1 is the most classic SMT-like of the Persona sub-series games, and it's the only one that combines the darker, edgier atmosphere of the three PS1 Personas with the insanely grindy and even gruelling gameplay. This is even truer for the Japanese original ps1 game. The encounter rate in the Japanese Persona 1 is literally every 3-5 steps, and AFAIK this was reduced quite a bit in Revelations Persona (which I haven't played). Add to that a 2 hour slog through a hell-like maze from the last save point to a boss fight that might very well kill you. Now I know a lot of people dislike Persona 1 for this reason, but I actually think it's one of its strengths in retrospect. There was a tension in that last dungeon, and a sense of relief after killing the last boss, that for me well exceeded how I felt beating Shin Megami Tensei 1. While I definitely love the Persona 2 duology more for its much better narrative and characters, Persona 2 Innocent Sin in particular is almost too casualized and streamlined in comparison, though neither is exactly balanced. So there's an argument for Persona 1: it has the most punishing and rewarding difficulty.
@@KisekiFox Well this may come off as harsh, but if you felt only Maki got any substance and development then you just weren't paying attention during cutscenes or ignored talking to your party in places like stores or treasure/rest rooms where everyone is spread out and can be communicated with. You get their reactions to everything going on, for the optional characters hints at their personal struggles and theme within the game and even then it's made obvious throughout the story for characters like Nanjo and Reiji, the latter of whom you understandably probably didn't have in the party first time because he's more a hidden reward character. And I'm just talking about SEBEC, there's also the stuff for the characters available in snow queen too. I'm sorry for coming off harsh, I'm just tired from years of ppl constantly going "these characters are 1 dimensional, no depth" because there isn't a forced gameplay mechanic that makes you hang out with them and there's no flashy voiced cutscenes for the ppl too lazy to read what's being said. Even when I personally thought P1 was lame at first when I started with 4, I knew there was depth to the cast when watching cutscenes. As for why ppl love it, for me personally it's now my favorite game in the franchise. The biggest thing is, I just find it the most fun to play, at least PSP, (I know it has qol additions compared to PSX which I'm unable to play myself so I won't rank them the same). Without writing a whole essay and since I have to go to bed soon while typing this lol, I'll just summarize main factors: 1) It's the most enjoyable in terms of pacing and replayability to me. Starts off quick and let's you familiarize with the school and city on your own time early on, whereas later games, mostly 4&5 feel like a slog to start with the feature length films going on before they let you really do anything. 2) Overall vibes. Mostly in regards to PSX which I know I said I didn't play, but you can patch some of it's OST into PSP through emulation and it's such an improvement to the game's atmosphere and tone. And it's not even all of PSX ost and little visual/audio charm. It's so nostalgic and dreamlike while having an urban kinda thriller ominous tone as well, in a way even p2 doesn't really have but I understand every persona goes for different vibes. 3) Dungeons. Aside from 5 and some of 2, after this P1 the series is seriously slacking on the interesting dungeon department especially compared to other RPGS. P1 might seem like a bunch of hallways on the surface but all are designed with a few puzzles that can consist of dungeon layout itself and in snow queen quest, specific challenges to said dungeon. Where with 3&4 THAT'S where it's all just hallways and battles, I think only a couple in 4 change it up a little. 4) Im not the biggest fan of the calendar system. It's just limiting in a way that loses the appeal of "manage yourself" after a while cause it's like... I can already do that in RPGS without this time limit lol. I don't hate it, but if it and social links go away, I wouldn't miss it lol. All this being said, I generally enjoy all the main games in the series, just explaining why someone might love the first the most to answer your question. This still ended up long... Sorry lol TL;DR: You definitely didn't pay attention to it experience all the characters, and there's just stuff only this game really has the later games don't that make me love it, even with no real huge attachment to the rest of SMT myself
I agree with this. Persona 1 has a different approach to its storytelling and characters. If you’re used to more conventional storytelling and character development you won’t find it here. I suggest if you plan to play the game again especially since it’s currently going through a retranslation patch for the PSX version try talking to the characters and npcs; You just might be surprised. Also I don’t think the gameplay of the Original Persona is nearly as bad people make it out to be. If you enjoy Old First Person Dungeon Crawlers you’ll feel right at home although I do agree with some things people say. There are some questionable design choices such as the leveling system and having persona levels. Combine that with the poor balancing such as the Grid System not really mattering that much since you can one shot pretty much everything once you get your hands on Megidola. I think if they tweaked magic, adjusted the grid system so that it actually matters, and streamlined stuff like the fusion mechanics and the numerous status ailments I think everyone could enjoy Persona 1. The dungeon design is excellent imo with Kama Palace being my personal favorite. Persona 1 is a great game and everyone should play it!
Protip to anyone crazy enough to play this on PS1. You can set up Auto battle so your characters will perform the move you set them to. The auto option to make everyone attack with melee is already available, so use the custom auto feature to have everyone attack with guns.
Gotta say, man, this video was amazing! The level of detail and information you gave me about pretty much EVERYTHING related to the gameplay is astounding. I loved every second of it and as someone who is not as familiar with the OG Ps1 version of Persona, I learned A LOT from you. Great video, I can't wait to see your analysis of the PSP version!
Wow.Excellent analysis. I love that you mention the strategy guide too. I remember playing this as a kid, I got as far as the Karma Palace by myself. After that, it got too hard and those maps were the only things that helped me get to the end. All before I had internet access, lol. Thanks, really brought back memories for me.
I love this series of games. I love the whole MegaTen multiverse. Persona is my fave part of the series tbh! And I’m happy to see the Japanese stuff covered now somewhat via the gameplay. I can’t wait to see the fully Japanese story covered lol.
These 2 of 3 videos are really strong! Good amount of info, of this game, and SMT in general. You made me interested in a Persona game, The newer ones never jive with me. All around really well made video. Love to see what you continue to make
Just a wee sidenote; The Snow Queen Quest wasn't cut from the PlayStation release entirely; only the North American release of the game due to two reasons; 1) ATLUS USA wanted to realease the game before Christmas and were 2) Running into trouble translating it, which would've delayed the release further into '97 had they continued to try.
The whole initials thing they do make sense when you look at the type of creatures under them, they're not randomized. It has to do with what WE consider them, ie mythical beast, angel etc. It's tied to that logic though I couldn't name them all right now.
This is so ridiculously well done. Thank you for all your hard work in putting this series together. So entertaining and informative - I also so appreciate your speech being classy, lacking unnecessary profanity.
>"Guns in this town can only hurt demons." So what about the Men in Black you fight in SEBEC? Or Kandori himself? I can MAYBE buy Kandori, if the party was aiming exclusively at his Persona to attack, but the Men in Black are definitely human. Not to mention the zombie enemies. They're demons, techinically, but they were still people. What makes them different?
Wouldn't that be even worse? Like OH GOD MARY BEHIND YOU *fuck aiming just shoot through her cos lol bullets only hurt demons* I know I'm way overthinking this shit. Great video man. But damn, that Revelations localization, though.
About Levelling up, once Nate's Starting Persona get's ACUup(Suku Kaja), or better still MAGup(Maka Kaja), you can have him spam those and he'll gain even more EXP than MC and Mary even early on, once Mark get's GravityAll(Maha/Ma Gryva), you won't have to worry about him either as long as he gets his turn in.
I come back to these videos at least once a year, even though I only ever played mainline SMT games and never once a Persona game. If I ever do play a Persona, it would probably be 3. Nevertheless I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your excellent research and dedication to the convoluted mechanics of the PSX games. Listening to your chilled analysis while looking at the esoteric visuals is as comfy of an experience as a YT video can be for me.
Watching gameplay footage of Persona 1, I always found it satisfying that the archer was in the back of the formation. Now I know that it's a gameplay aspect. I also find it really, really cool that when ambushed your formation is reversed. Persona 5 has the reverse ambush too. Although it's not that bad. Honestly I only ever was ambushed 3 or 4 times in my whole playthrough. There should have been some mandatory/scripted reverse ambush battles. Oh well.
Very well done...excellent channel ! Just bought a mini ps1 with Revelations on it. Loving it so far, showing the attack grids would have been lovely like the psp version
This is so well laid out. Honestly, I’ve done like 5 playthroughs of Revelations:Persona and I didn’t know half of this stuff because as you said their is so much you just don’t need to complete the game. I loved learning all this though. Great work!
I'm a huge SMT fan, but I always skipped it. I knew it was a somewhat grindy and slow game, high encounter rate (really surprised you never mentioned encounter rate), and slow animations. This look into story and gameplay is INCREDIBLY VALUABLE to someone like me. I love seeing how the early mechanics later transitioned into the great core combat system we know now. I thank you for this, and have subscribed.
I didn't forget about the encounter rate. It's something that will be a big aspect in part 3 since it ties into how the US version was changed compared to the Japanese. And you are a welcome :D
Oh I apologize I didn't realize there was going to be a part 3. Your analysis has been so complete I find it hard to believe you have enough to fill another video but I'm sure you'll prove me wrong.
A talking purple tree? When are teens gonna say no to drugs? Great video! It's very informative! It's cool to see all the design decisions from the OG Persona. How far we've come!
Sorry for this rather late comment,(since I just started watching your videos, which are awesome by the way!), but as for your question at 23:48, I think I might have an idea for the two examples you showed. Maybe MA could stand for Magical Animals(since I saw a kitsune, a cat thing, alongside others) and DD could maybe be Demonic Dwarves or something?
I'm just watching this now. and I'm just 5 minutes in, but I feel obligated to point out that the "worst-bad-good-best" affinity system is explained in the manual(in the PSP version). the manual is actually pretty good.
I played about 2 hours of this game just as a curiosity. Definitely too old-school for me but really dig the presentation (besides city map) and the music is siiiiiiiiick - everyone should check out the soundtrack if not the game. Anyway these videos are fantastic!
Great work here, as well as in first one! Every mechanic is explained in a detailed, but easy to understand way. Plus you skipped all the parts that are really not interesting. I have to tell you that I'm impressed with the level of preparation and professionalism in this one. Keep it up!
dude, no one is gonna fucking believe me... but I have a classmate who have a axe in his backpack all the time (he know the series only because of joker in smash)
I'm glad that later Persona games made the character level and the Persona level the same. and that all your stats come from the Persona you have equipped. and that they streamlined the magic system. EDIT: Should clarify that I mean that they made the levels the same for your party members. The protagonist, necessarily, has separate levels for themselves and their Personas. The stats still come from the Personas, though.
Yeah I don’t really like how in later persona games only the protagonist can wield multiple personas because he has the power of the Wild Card. It makes the main character seem like this super special ultra important someone who was chosen. In the first two persona games, every person in the main cast is on a even playing field. Everyone can use more than one persona making each person as viable as the MC. Not to mention letting your main character have the wild card just limits player expression and team composition. Persona would be way more fun if you can customize party members to your liking such as choosing which persona can be equipped by a party member and experimenting with different builds.
@@OldEnemy1 ehh you can also argue that it would make everyone feel the same if they were able to all wield any persona, with how it is in the modern persona games certain characters have their strengths and weaknesses which make it interesting for the player to choose and strategize. also I don't get your point about the main characters, they literally are chosen and really important super special ultra important someones (lol) in their respective games for a reason.
What's the track playing in the speed up dungeon segment? Also, nice to see some proper analysts of the older games. The newer games just steal all the spotlight.
While I'm playing this vid, I'm simultaneously playing Persona 3. Fact. Current game date is 8/4*Tu Daytime For what it's worth, I shared Pt.1 of this video to my Facebook page. Any other Persona fans should definitely scope this!
Gave me a flashback to grinding for bossdamage on the final floor of avidia world and not saving and then the game freaking crashed when pandora did the phase change I was upset
While I can’t believe that their guns can only hurt demons, I can believe that they are using bullets that are effective against them, as normal bullets may not be.
I recommend the original game over the psp remake. They changed the music, which removed a lot of the atmosphere. It gives off a 80's thriller and horror movie vibe, which suits this game well. It's a heavily flawed game, but also a game with massive artistic substance, and a huge part of it was lost when they replaced the music. This is the kind of game that you play for its upsides, so the PS1 version is the way to go. The most important improvement on the PSP is the battle speed, but on an emulator, you can fastforward the battles. That's what I did, and I actually think it added more immersion, because I spent less time in battles and more time running around and listening to that amazing and captivating dungeon music.

I have a lot to say on the soundtrack in the next part.
The whole initials thing they do make sense when you look at the type of creatures under them, they're not randomized. It has to do with what WE consider them, ie mythical beast, angel etc. It's tied to that logic though I couldn't name them all right now.
not gonna lie. I would LOVE to see Persona and the Persona 2 duology get the same remake treatment as final fantasy VII!
This is so ridiculously well done. Thank you for all your hard work in putting this series together. So entertaining and informative - I also so appreciate your speech being classy, lacking unnecessary profanity.
>"Guns in this town can only hurt demons."
So what about the Men in Black you fight in SEBEC? Or Kandori himself? I can MAYBE buy Kandori, if the party was aiming exclusively at his Persona to attack, but the Men in Black are definitely human. Not to mention the zombie enemies. They're demons, techinically, but they were still people. What makes them different?
lol maybe Kei/Nate was bullshitting so the party would feel better about carrying around uzis.
Wouldn't that be even worse? Like OH GOD MARY BEHIND YOU *fuck aiming just shoot through her cos lol bullets only hurt demons*
I know I'm way overthinking this shit. Great video man. But damn, that Revelations localization, though.
Cyborb demon humans
zombieplasticclock funny you say that, zombies in this game are immune to guns
Satan The Arbiter Huh. I totally forgot about that. Yeah good job Nanjo, the guns hurt only demons except when it doesn't
Been feelin' bit nostalgic...
I had an itch to scratch, and those Vids of yours are just godsend.
Thank ya man, much love & respecc 🌺🔆🌺
Amazing
The search work
The accent
Pure art this video.
funny24686 god i hate the accent lol
I love the Mozart that played in the beginning. I've sung the entire Requiem Mass and it was amazing
I just realized how much change were applied for the psp version
Love this series of persona videos!
Subscribed because your small commentary about this setting in the us makes it more believable and Mark with an axe just made the cut for me. 😂😂😂😃
This video was so perfect, Hope part3 comes early.
Oh well.
Just found this series! Really enjoying it!
The Persona remake is one of my favourite psp games; can't wait for the 3rd part!
Very well done...excellent channel ! Just bought a mini ps1 with Revelations on it. Loving it so far, showing the attack grids would have been lovely like the psp version
I have to say, this video series really has some masterful editing
This is so well laid out. Honestly, I’ve done like 5 playthroughs of Revelations:Persona and I didn’t know half of this stuff because as you said their is so much you just don’t need to complete the game. I loved learning all this though. Great work!
Thanks!
You are one of the most insightful review channels I found 🥰🥰
Yes! I've been waiting for this!
I know Philemon is voiced by Travis Willingham, but holy cow he sounds like Phil Hartman so much in this role.
I don't think Willingham played him in the PS1 version. I do really like his PS1 voice though.
A talking purple tree? When are teens gonna say no to drugs? Great video! It's very informative! It's cool to see all the design decisions from the OG Persona. How far we've come!
It's the talking purple tree from Courage the Cowardly dog you twat. Axe yourself
Romantic Innkeeper of Gran Soren Lol, how could I overlook that. It all makes sense now!
I was never interested in playing Persona 1 because it seems so archaic but now I must play it .
34:03 actually, its gained by using attack *and* your persona. The persona level can be raised only by persona.
Philemon is an OP dude but has really little quality art of him lol.
Getting all 3 fool arcana personae in one playthrough, is priceless.
I played about 2 hours of this game just as a curiosity. Definitely too old-school for me but really dig the presentation (besides city map) and the music is siiiiiiiiick - everyone should check out the soundtrack if not the game. Anyway these videos are fantastic!
Boy was I sold when you mentioned archetypes
WOOOT PART 2 BOI!
Sweet! Been looking forward to this since the last one!
Just found these. So watching all of them. Great stuff.
Damn, I never knew those secret powers worked only on best affinities. I thought they just activate from time to time when you were low hp lmao.
I believe the "birdatack" skills maybe a poor translation for ranged atacks. Like the gun in smt or strange journey.
these are super cool and informative videos!
I've been waiting for this.
TAKE THIS, DIO! GO, HIEROPHANT *thor*
the intro was effing epic brrooo! lets go part 2!!!!
Even the fusion system is streamlined and easier to understand
@@stonalisa3729 Mhm, aye.
@@stonalisa3729 Mhm, agreed :D
Don't let this video or other comments distract you from the fact that Deva Yuga is the most bomb ass track in all of persona
39:00 loving the rave show here... KANASHIMIIIIII
What’s the song in the background at 1:03
Can't wait for the next entry.
“Small visual effects”… like I get what he means but the Hinokagutsuchi go brrr with like 50 f*ck off explosions
You rock dude. Keep it up!
I actually prefer the way Personas are handled in this game compared to Persona 3 onwards
Jesus, I forgot how ridiculously complex this game was. I can't believe I played through it as a 13 year old.
As soon as I heard that your items can fucking miss, I was like nah fam, I'll just stick to the PSP re-release.
Pretty sure its the same with the psp version
What's the track playing in the speed up dungeon segment?
Also, nice to see some proper analysts of the older games. The newer games just steal all the spotlight.

Thanks.
i love this game and think it's very underrated, but boy is it's gameplay stressful.
Wow. these videos are amazing
is there any place where we can find scans of the Persona strategy guide? i cant find it anywhere :
While I'm playing this vid, I'm simultaneously playing Persona 3. Fact.
Current game date is 8/4*Tu Daytime
For what it's worth, I shared Pt.1 of this video to my Facebook page. Any other Persona fans should definitely scope this!
Gave me a flashback to grinding for bossdamage on the final floor of avidia world and not saving and then the game freaking crashed when pandora did the phase change
I was upset
While I can’t believe that their guns can only hurt demons, I can believe that they are using bullets that are effective against them, as normal bullets may not be.
As a newcomer starting with P5 its interestng to know that Atlus refused to explain mechanics even 20 years later lol
P5 explained a lot more than these games ever did
Oh man, it's a Snikety video!
hey Mark ide like to ax you a question......... ill see myself out now.......... *PERSOOOOOONNAAAAAA*
5:15 Thats lie. If you are charmed, you can use gun on your teammates, and it will deal damage.
There's also plenty of non-demon enemies you can hurt with your guns too.
@@SnicketySlice Yeah, like the agents. Also, love your stuff!
I'd really like to see a short video of Snickety trying to figure out the lore of the Augustus Tree, I googled it and I'm even more confused. lol
That's an interesting idea. I'll have to look into it.
So you prefer the shittier localization?
I really hope you'll cover all games
Great vid man. Keep it up

5:18 nate: the guns can only hurt demons; also the guns when fighting the sebec agents oh yeah damage given to le enemy
Who wants to see bird attacks come back? No one? Alright cool.
fighterxaos watch it be brought back in a 5 spin off
