Then, they took him off Update for a brief time before firing him, and suddenly he did _several_ amazing impressions almost all at once -- dead-on Letterman, dead-on Larry King, and there was always the Burt Reynolds impression, which seemed effortless.

1:17 I just found Don Rickles from Norm mentioning him and have been watching his videos for like the past two weeks. I literally was just watching him before this video too. Fucking so happy Norm brought him up so much, I don't know if I ever would have heard of Rickles if he didn't. Both of them are absolute GOATS and its a damn privilege for the internet to exist allowing all of us to be able to witness them (and of course we can still see Norm live today, but that won't last forever either obviously)
This is why we love Norm. He's the smartest guy in the room, but he juxtaposes this fact with his shtick where he's the dumbest guy in the room, or, more accurately, that he's not necessarily dumb but that he's the most naive guy in the room. The effect is hysterically funny, and he deserves all the accolades he's received because of his genius. I mean, who else but Norm could drop a Nora Ephron reference but yet juxtapose this with being a naïf, and get such laughs?

These little overlooked pearls are the essence of this comic genius, he is so incredibly entertaining and funny and then you realize that the audience (yourself included) didn't even get caught perhaps half of the jokes, hidden meanings and wordplays.

Nah, Norm likes to fuck with late night show hosts. You can hear Conan talk about it a lot, when people ask him about Norm, as well as Norm talking about it himself. And of course you can watch Letterman and his hysterical laughter when Norm pulls a 180 at his setups.
@@leadnitrate2194 yeah that’s exactly it. It’s actually fascinating how well Norm would change his material and general approach depending on what show he was on (Letterman, Leno, Conan, etc). He only tends to go for the “steamroll” approach for the guys he doesn’t revere much at all, or sometimes on Leno just because Leno’s so laid-back and hands-off anyway that it works.
I love how Norm ignores all his questions and gets straight to the funny jokes.

Fucking so happy Norm brought him up so much, I don't know if I ever would have heard of Rickles if he didn't. Both of them are absolute GOATS and its a damn privilege for the internet to exist allowing all of us to be able to witness them (and of course we can still see Norm live today, but that won't last forever either obviously)

Norm slays as usual. The best.
This is why we love Norm. He's the smartest guy in the room, but he juxtaposes this fact with his shtick where he's the dumbest guy in the room, or, more accurately, that he's not necessarily dumb but that he's the most naive guy in the room. The effect is hysterically funny, and he deserves all the accolades he's received because of his genius. I mean, who else but Norm could drop a Nora Ephron reference but yet juxtapose this with being a naïf, and get such laughs?

Nah, Norm likes to fuck with late night show hosts. You can hear Conan talk about it a lot, when people ask him about Norm, as well as Norm talking about it himself. And of course you can watch Letterman and his hysterical laughter when Norm pulls a 180 at his setups.
That Super Dave impression was spot on. I almost thought it was dubbed -- Norm says he can't do impressions, but the few he does, he nails.

@@leadnitrate2194 yeah that’s exactly it. It’s actually fascinating how well Norm would change his material and general approach depending on what show he was on (Letterman, Leno, Conan, etc). He only tends to go for the “steamroll” approach for the guys he doesn’t revere much at all, or sometimes on Leno just because Leno’s so laid-back and hands-off anyway that it works.
