    It’s amazing how you can pretty much look up anything on UA-cam and find the guy that really knows his shit… Brother I got a 2015 dodge that the DEF gauge hasn’t moved in two or three months… But I don’t drive it a lot either I think in that three months I put maybe 1000 miles on and I was starting to really freak out this morning as I was driving it because it still hadn’t moved off the full gauge, so I will keep watching it. Thanks for the wealth of info… You probably just save me a pile load at the dealership of checking and getting a bill for it…😊

    I always wondered why it showed full for so long, thanks for the info! The only "simple" fixes would be to change the overall height of the pump and sensor to match the height of the tank, or change the tank profile to bring the top close to the top of the pump. But for me I'm happy that it works as is.

    I just picked up a 14' and have never dealt with DEF in a pick up. I was questioning if the gauge worked.
    The trucks at work have the 15L Cummins ISX and we are 160,000 lbs (fully loaded). We get 3.5-4 mpg of fuel. They have a 15 gal Def tank and that will last just over 2,000 miles

    David it would be great to learn about the DIC code "Bad DEF Detected" and how the technician would test the DEF and determine if the DEF is actually bad. It is a big concern for Cummins owners to ensure they are getting "fresh" DEF since I understand it is very expensive to resolve one of these Bad DEF problems. Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • @Ltngdrvr
    @Ltngdrvr 6 років тому +1

    Don't know if the gauge and tank have changed, but my 2015 RAM 2500 has almost two gallons of space above the sensor apparently, not just a half gallon. But, at least I know now that the pump and sensor is in the bottom of the tank, not the top like my old f250. Interesting to finally see an example.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 років тому

      I have seen many that go alot more miles than I mentioned in the video before it starts coming off of Full. May be affected by the load of the vehicle and if anything is being pulled. None the less they all behaved the same as in the video...once it reached the level unit.....it started moving. It certainly causes customers to worry the first time they notice it even though its normal operation. Thanks for the comment and make sure to subscribe

    • @Ltngdrvr
      @Ltngdrvr 6 років тому +1

      My understanding is that DEF usage runs around 2-3% of fuel usage, so 2-3 gallons of DEF per 100 gallons of fuel used. So, for an unladen truck running down the highway, getting 20 MPG, would go 2000 miles on 100 gallons of fuel, and use 2-3 gallons of DEF. So, if it was like my truck, it could go as much as 2000 miles before the DEF gauge starts to drop. And, for mine, when towing a large 5th wheel travel trailer, getting 10 MPG, it could go 1000 miles before the gauge drops.

  • @Ltngdrvr
    @Ltngdrvr 8 років тому

    Well, from personal experience with my 2015 2500 RAM Mega Cab CTD, I can tell you that as soon as you see the gauge start to drop, it will take about 2 gallons of DEF to fill it back up, not just 1/2 a gallon. And DEF usage depends on load, higher load, lower fuel economy, results in much higher DEF usage. I have seen as high as a gallon of DEF used in 250 miles when pulling a heavy trailer.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 років тому

      Thanks for the personal experience. The 9 gallon tank can be found in more then just the cab and chassis so you may have the 9 instead of the 5. Just depends. But none the less as you stated.....the load on the vehicle surely has an affect on the DEF mpg. Thanks for including that info for other viewers to see and take in as well. Much appreciated!

    • @Ltngdrvr
      @Ltngdrvr 8 років тому

      Well, no RAM pickup has anything bigger than the 5.5 gallon DEF tank. I wish it did have the larger tank, but it won't fit a pickup chassis.
      I did appreciate seeing the DEF pump and level sensor, though. The only other one I've had apart was on my old ferd f250, totally different setup.

    • @kscumminsdriver
      @kscumminsdriver 8 років тому +1

      Exactly. On my 2013 2500 MC, I'm averaging 1470 MPG on DEF lifetime (I don't tow)... when I fill up with DEF I expect to go around 3000 miles before the gauge moves a noticeable amount... on my last fillup, I had gone almost 8300 miles on my tank of DEF.

    My 2013 RAM stuck on full until the codes popped up….
    I don’t know how long, my truck never shut down or told me it would…
    It did give me a Nitrous code ???? Don’t rdmember but I looked it up and it indicated the DEF system.
    I didn’t remember filling the death tank in quite a while.
    So I took some new DEF fluid and filled the tank. The code went away. The day is still stuck on Pool, but I have no more issues. I simply have to check more often to see that it is actually using the DEF fluid.
    My fear was that had run out and screwed up my entire exhaust. This did not happen.
    I suppose the only thing wrong is that that gauge is not properly is this not or should it not be a covered item for Warranty?

    Hello how are you! I introduce myself my name is Eduardo and I have seen your videos on youtube and are very professional. I buy a ram 2500 laramie 6.7 2015 and always felt that sometimes the engine sounded weird, it was near the turbo as if a hose blowing somewhere and the engine sounded stronger and ugly, then 5 months rekindled check engine with error sensor turbo and was remplacado new one, eight months after the EGR valve will get dirty, 6 months after the same and now I came out the dpf is 100% full but was cleaned and regenerated, but the sound near the turbo back and loses power and consumption is greater. When I go to 60 mph loose the accelerator the truck is like walking braking and turbo bar are at 0

    • @nicolearaneda4746
      @nicolearaneda4746 7 років тому

      - the sound is similar to when the engine is cold
      - the strange thing is that when you open the door the sound is removed
      - Also the sound is removed when in parking mode
      - Fuel consumption is higher (diesel)

    • @nicolearaneda4746
      @nicolearaneda4746 7 років тому

      I want to point out that when it has that sound the turbo drops to 0 bar
      - the dpf was checked and clean
      - the egr valve was checked and was clean
      (Because of that sound the dpf has been saturated but regenerates automatically)
      (I also regenerated manually by accelerating to 1900 rpm in N or P mode for 6 minutes)

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 років тому

      The main way to check all this is looking for codes and also monitoring the data. The data will tell if there is a turbo issue and also tell you the status of the DPF. Not sure how you have having the DPF checked......The data gives the soot load which tells you the over all health of the DPF. Otherwise we have alot of symptoms but it needs to be checked further using a scanner to look over the readings.

Numerous times the DEF gauge on my 2021 RAM 3500 stays around 1/4 to 1/2 full for extended period of time, the suddenly drops to 0 & I get the dreaded limp mode in 200 mile warning. When I add a 2.5 gallon container of deaf it reads 3/4 to full. Any ideas on what might be causing that?

    Hope this isn't a repeat question. So because the top of that sensor is a bit above a 3/4 full tank, is it calibrated to indicate 3/4 full on the gauge when air hits it? Or is the top of the sensor calibrated to indicate full ( even though the tank is not full ) as air just begins to hit it? Learned a lot watching your videos. Thanks

  • @anthonystrother9117
    @anthonystrother9117 2 роки тому

    Holy Crap! This was awesome, thanks man! My 2015 3500 has this same issue, twice now. The first time the dealership replaced the sensor. This time I am on the fence about whether or not to take it back in. I have driven it enough to get the tank level down to about half, so 2 1/2 gallons approx remaining. I know this because I topped it off, to be sure where the level in the tank was. Is there a separate sensor for this or is it all just that module in the DEF tank that you show in your video? Any idea how many miles vs DEF the 6.7ltr Cummins uses? Thanks again! Tony

  • @aharleyguy
    @aharleyguy 3 роки тому +1

    Dave, i got a DEF Gauge stuck on 1/4 left in the tank. Just above the Red Zone. Also started to get a code P203E. Research is telling me the sending unit mounted in the tank is gone bad. This sensor is molded into the side of the tank and if it goes bad you have to replace the complete DEF tank. ? Crazy right.
    Now you just showed the level gauge is in the fuel pump. (air has to contact it so it can read ) So who is correct? The dealer replaced the tank, did not fix the gauge problem, now they are going to replace the pump? I am not sure this will fix the gauge problem, still waiting on the dealer to complete the work. I thought if the pump was bad i would get another code?
    Your thoughts on this please.

      It may take running the prime and pump test on the DEF pump to make it pass and allow you to clear the code. Depends on what the original code was and it the issue has been fixed.

    Hey David! So, thanks so much for explaining the gauge in the DEF system... I always imagined it was a float switch, so I thought the fluid calcified around the lever, freezing it up...
    That being said, My DEF gauge was pegged at the 50% mark for a long time (not sure of the mileage, but it was a while). I was getting worried about it, so I added 2.5 gallons yesterday. I started my truck up (Ram Ecodiesel 2014), and the gauge went to just above 75% full. Can you explain why my gauge would peg at 50%?

      Morning Jared. About the only thing that I could think would cause this is a possible level unit. I would have it checked for codes and also see if it happens again before going to far into it. Thanks for checking out the channel and make sure to subscribe

      Like I said....I would wait to see if you see it happen again. That would also be the best time to take it to the dealer so that its happening when they check it. Drive it until you dont see a change for a long period of time first. Otherwise they may just guess then again they may guess either way. Best to have it happening either way. Thanks again for having subscribed.

    Great Video !! If you get a RAM into the shop that needs the DEF changed out (BAD DEF - SEE DEALER message) would you do a video on that process. I understand that the DEF tanks needs to be emptied and cleaned and a new DEF pump installed. Would be interested in how that process is completed. Also what is your experience in seeing these trucks with this message ? Is it widespread ?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 років тому

      I worked on a DEF pump replacement and when done....found out I had not recorded any audio! I mean what the heck. Not a good day that day. The fluid needs to be tested first to see if that fluid is the issue or if there is another issue such as the catalyst. There are test strips on the market for DEF and also a specific gravity tester will work as well that you can use for antifreeze or battery acid. All this depends on the code you have. Curious if you know the specific code. Then I could tell you the most common cause and if its a widespread/common issue.

    david tank is full 5mph notice appears downloaded solution is to fill the def tank but def tank is full. it takes a while for the unit to recognize that its full 300,000 miles on truck. thanks for the great videos do you know what the problem might be?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 років тому

      If that message comes up then most likely there will be an issue/code present so having the vehicle control modules scanned is the next step. That requires a special scanner that can access all the modules. Then with that info we will have a direction to go in....otherwise its just a guess at this point.

    Question about def in2015 ram 2500 .
    My def gauge will not move and sit on the half tank for about two weeks or about 2500 miles of use. Then all of a sudden will drop to the empty mark on next start. Could this be caused by the minus 30 degree weather I use the truck in.
    ???

      Typically that means that the pump needs replacing because the sound board (def level sensor) is acting up. I havent seen temp affect it. With things possibly warming up you could keep an eye on it and see if you noticed any patterns of when it happens such as temp like you mentioned. Thanks for asking and for watching.

    Have you done a video on changing the level sensor/ DEF pump on a 2016 Ram 2500? I have a new one here in New Zealand that's right hand drive and only done 4700km and the level sensor started reading all over the place till finally it started the countdown and now it will only do 8kmh even though the DEF tank is full, it's back at the dealers and a new sensor is on order from the states.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 років тому +1

      I did do a video and the found out that half the footage didnt have audio! So the majority of it became useless. The pump mounts to the bottom of the tank. You could try to disconnect the tank filler neck loose at the tank and siphon the DEF fluid out or you could place a large catch container under the tank/pump.....large enought to hold all the DEF that will come out when you take the fuel pump lock ring off. I usually take it loose but let it stay in place until all the DEF comes out and into the catch container. Reinstall is the same way. Some times it take a scanner to actuator the "priming" feature of the pump so as to get all the air out. Sometimes its not needed. You will know because it will set a code for pump pressure if the air becomes an issue. The pump also has a metal insert/orifice in the outlet nipple.....just make sure you dont lose it. If you feel you might have issues......I am always open to flying there and showing you how....just need some plane tickets mailed to me haha.....always wanted to see New Zealand. Thanks again for the question and make sure to subscribe!

      Thanks for the offer, but it's in the hands of the local dealer, I just couldn't find anything online about changing out the sensor and it was more curiosity more than anything.
      I do see in the forums that this sensor has ongoing issues for some owners, in your experience have you found this to be true?
      I am considering bringing another new sensor into NZ myself and putting it up on the shelf until it does it again and then it's just a matter of getting it into the local dealer and they swapping it out again, and then the dealer giving me back the warranty supplied one again once they receive it from Dodge, as this way it won't be off the road for a week or more waiting on a new sensor from the states as long as they use DHL, otherwise its 3 weeks to ship it here.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 років тому

      SuperMrcat Now the sensor is part of the DEF pump and can't be replaced separately. It's not something I see often. Last one I replaced was about 6-8 months ago. I don't see ordering one as back up due to price and not being a very common issue.

    • @SuperMrcat
      @SuperMrcat 7 років тому +1

      Thanks David, your experience is much appreciated, I'll put this one down to just a faulty unit that once it's started getting used has simply failed as the truck is virtually new, if it happens again I will bring my own pump/ sensor in as it costs me a lot more money without my truck to tow my heavy gear for work than the cost of a new pump. I have seen a new one on Ebay for about $430NZ so that's not too bad if it gets my truck going in a few hours for them to fit it.

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      Most times its not the fluid....it still has to be checked. Typically its a sensor or SCR cat thats going bad that causes that false reading. It will require some further checking to be sure. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

    Hey, I'm working on a 2013 Peterbilt 379 with Cummins isl9 in it. Def gauge is at 99% but led on the gauge is flashing. This has caused the truck to go into a derate, only codes present are derate codes. I suspected a fualty def level sensor so I replaced it...did nothing for me, I can physically confirm that the tank is full. It performs and completes forced Regen, monitored live data all falls within range. Checked continuity from level sensor to ECM good, ECM to gauge good. Really stuck on this one. Any idea where to look? Thought with no actives codes leading to the fualt.
    Any help would be great, thanks.

      The first step is to check the codes and see what is present. Then testing of the DEF fluid may be next. The issue could be the fluid but it could be something else like the SCR catayst or a pump/injector issue.
