- This video is about RAM CUMMINS P20E8 DEF CODE ALMOST COST ME $3K!! I had trouble with my truck driving down the road the other day. The check engine line came on along with service def system. Then a message appeared max speed 5 mph starting in 150 mi. I took the truck in to get scanned and the code was P20E8 reductant flow low. The dealer said def fluid was good but the pump and def injector needed replaced. I declined the work brought the truck home cleaned the crystallized def fluid from the injector re installed it and all is working fine now.

Mine did this 1700 miles from home in Nebraska while pulling a camper with family. Local dealer said they were too busy and wouldn’t even reset the countdown till limp mode to get me to the next dealer. Truck was still under warranty. Found a local guy that deleted it for 1500 bucks the same day and threw the crap in the garbage. Best money I ever spent.
I had code p203f reductant level too low in 2022 ram 3500 with 40k miles I watched this video and cleaned the injector and light never came back. Dealer kept the truck for 2 weeks never checked it so I went and got my truck back to fix it after watching this video. Thank you so much!
Aye, 17 year old here. My mom has a 2013 2500 crew cab with the 6.7l turbo cummins. She bought the truck like half a year ago with moderate mileage stacked on the odometer. Its currently having this service def system message pop up. today is the first time its ever happened so im crossing my fingers and hoping this is the issue. Im pretty ignorant when it comes to the computerized stuff. My dad was a heavy equipment mechanic and could tackle pretty much anything given the proper tools and space to handle whatever project it may have been. Unfortunately he passed away october of 2019, so im stepping up to the plate and embracing mechanics. Never worked on a diesel in my life. I understand what makes them run. My specialty is small block chevy, I just had a set of 1.94 camelhump heads rebuilt for a small block im building up. Really would like to save mom the 3k if I can. People like you make life easy for people like me. Thanks for the video and pointing me in the direction of the other channel. I will say this, if I ever buy a dodge, im getting a 93 extended cab 4x4 2500 with the Allison 5 speed and the 5.9 turbo cummins. My dad had one and it was the coolest truck ever. The shifter knob was an old glass door knob and sometimes it would turn like a purple color. Stay safe and keep truckin.
My husband and I want to thank you for making this video. You explained it very well. I have a 2014 Ram 2500, and over a week ago, I was in town when the DEF message came on with the 150-mile warning. I got it home, looked it up on UA-cam, found your video, and had a hard time finding the pump, but I finally found one and ordered an injector. I ordered the pump tool from your Amazon link (thank you so much for that). My husband put it in no problems. When I started the truck, the DEF message went away. We drove it a short distance a few times. Then I took it to town, which is 45 miles. To get my check engine light to go off, we did not have a code reader. So found out if you turn the key two clicks before it starts 4 times, let all the dash lights finish before you go on to the next, then one more time but when all the dash lights go out, start the truck. So you do it five times, and on the 5th time, you start the vehicle. Check Engine Light went out right away. The first time I did it, I went too fast, and it did not work. Thank you again. It saved us half what they were going to charge to fix.
How many miles were on your truck when this went out
Light came on first of June at 180 some thousand miles. I cleaned the injector and cleaned out the hose and that got me by till about the end of September and then the pump quit altogether.
@@trucksandrecreation a little over 128,000 mile
I got a 2021 ram 3500 w/ 135,000 miles on it and my def system is going out
Ty Sir, you are superman!!
I don't dread that message cause my DEF system was lost in a boating accident.
Be careful what you say in public. You don't own the computer on your vehicle. The federal government does. You kinda own it but not allowed to do anything to it. Read up on it. I didn't believe it either when I was told.
@@Bryan-Hensley come and take it.
@@cynicaltexan9639 it's not about that, it's about the thousands in fines and loss of the right to tag it. Since we have a green left leaning president, they'll crack down on this. The big problem with all the pollution controls on the diesels is the parts are all aftermarket. The engine manufacturers dont make the parts. The makers dont have any incentive to fix the defective parts just minimal warranty on them. We all should be pushing for legislation to mandate 10yr parts and labour warranty on all parts related to the pollution controls from the date of sale regardless of how many times the vehicle changes hands
I just took my truck to dodge dealership with same issue. I found out if you overfill the DEF tank your pump will not pump. Plus the level gauge is slow to react so you need to be patient when filling. They drained about a gallon out of tank and pump started pumping. Just a issue I had for your viewers.
Would you mind providing more detail? This is exactly what I am dealing with and my mpg has dropped to 11 with an empty trailer. Doesn’t make sense, I had a feeling the dpf wasn’t getting cleaned. Do you drain from the filler or the tank itself?
@@cartmenkillsyou Delete the system and fuel mileage will go up !
That's strange because when the guage says it's down to 1/4 tank, I always refill then. I usually go to truck stops while towing or 5th wheel and able to fill both my fuel & def tanks from there pumps and pay for both. But as I'm filling after about 2 gallons it registered full but traveling cross the country I try to to off both tanks. After guage read full I've continued & out in atleast another 2-3 halls of def until it actually over file it once but my 2013 6.7 Cummins didn't have any problem you mentioned about being overfilled!!!
And it did continue to pump def as the guage always registers it as going down as i drive!!! This was continued from previous reply by me.
@@mikemason9438 thank you
At 27K miles my DEF injector went bad. Covered under warranty. The next time it goes bad I won't need DEF anymore.
Thank you for posting this! I was driving from the LA area to Las Vegas on a Friday and near the Nevada/California state line I got the dreaded "limp mode" message. Of course I freaked because I was 240 miles from home! The next day I took my 2016 2500 to local Ram dealer in Vegas. I asked them to run the code so maybe they could narrow the issue to a sensor, pump or sensor. The folks at Chapman Ram were great but unfortunately the code was very generic. They told me since I was from out of town, they could squeeze me in and have their diesel tech take a look at it more deeply for a fee but they couldn't do any actual work on it for days. I had this issue before, a few months after I bought the truck new. I got the injector replaced under warranty back in 2016, so I figured it may be the injector again and maybe if I just clean it like you mentioned, I would be good. So before I agreed to have the diesel tech look at, I went to an auto parts store, bought a small metric ratchet set, found a shady spot in 108 degree Vegas and went to work. Sure enough, the injector was all crystalized. I cleaned it and after 2 restarts, the message cleared! Drove home the next day and the message hasn't returned since! BIG THANKS again for posting this and saving me from a nightmare!
Glad you got it working. Try running peak blue def platinum. I’ve been having far less build up running that.
The small plastic clips located around the electric connection is just a simple pinching them together to release. Don't need to pull or separate from around the electrical connector. Also to check the def flow make sure the electrical component is connected with the def line disconnected. Simple start and press the pedal....it will flow out instantly. Also stated by other's just a quick rinse of hit water ( not boiling hot just tab water hot) washes away very quickly so soaking isn't needed. Small screw driver or old stuff bristle brush helps. Thanks for the video 👍
Dealers are the worst. I have had so many arguments with dealers about their practices and gouging customers over simple fixes. Wish there was some kind of regulation for them to be held accountable.
I went back to gas trucks but thanks for your helping everyone out. I’ll pass it on if I hear of a diesel owner with similar problem.
I had a shop foreman years ago, totally lost it in the shop at all of the mechanics--- " I hired mechanics in this shop, not replacement jockies!!! You make damned sure a part is bad & not guess it`s bad !!!" In todays dealerships, they call themselves "technicians" but are replacement jockies !!! If they can`t dazzle you with brilliance, they baffle you with bullsh--t !!
And that ain't no shi it !
ALWAYS tell them you want the parts back that they took out (when they replaced something). It helps a BIT to keep them honest.
You own those parts, your have a right to get them back.
Couldn’t be more true
I deleted mine on my 19-2500. With deleting and programming it was $1500. Now it sounds better, pulls better, and gets around 2-3 more mpg. And has a lot more power.
I have a 16 and this just happened with 30K miles. I have a good diesel mech, but will he know this? I'm in CA where emissions are crazy - any negatives when I get it smogged?
@@kenle3419 I think in CA you wouldn't do it.

My Notification popped up but then went away. I'm gonna go through this routine as a preemptive move anyway. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together to help people!
Your welcome glad I could help. Thanks for watching
Thank you young man, you just saved me 3600CAD!!!! God bless you son
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm out of state and this happened to me. 15 mins after it cooled down I had the injector cleaned and back in! It was exactly like you said! 🎉🎉🎉
Good deal! 👍🏼
Thank you. I had almost identical story as you did. I decided to take diagnosis in my own hands because the dealers explanation was not adding up that everything went bad at once.
You are a hero, the dealer stressed me out and starting talking ridiculous amounts of money. Thank you
Thats why they call them "Stealerships".
Thanks for the video! I have a '16 RAM 2500 and it threw a P207F code and was on the dreaded 5mph countdown. After watching your video thought I would take a shot in the dark and check the DEF injector. It was over 50% clogged from buildup. I cleaned it all up with a wet rag and put it back together and let the truck idle for ~10min and it cleared the permanent code. Back in business with a 10min job. I highly suggest spraying the bolts with WD-40 and letting them sit a while. My bolts came out no problem. Thanks again!!
Cool I’m glad it worked for you!! For sure on the wd. Don’t want those to break off. I used high temp copper anti-seize on the reinstall. Thanks for watching an commenting.
Thanks for the video. I have periodically had to change my def fluid because i figured it has gotten too old and been in very hot air temperatures that makes it deteriorate more quickly. Its pretty easy to do and I'm old. 😊 The intake line on the def tank has a fitting that disconnects. Then i just pump it out with a hand siphon that has a hand squeeze bulb on it. Takes a couple of minutes to pump the def out and reconnect the line. Now i only fill the def tank 1/2 way so it gets turned over before it gets old. The hotter the climate the more important this is.
Thanks for the info! You, sir, are a hero in a world of dealership villains. Take care Pard.
This is why I love UA-cam! Thank you sir!
Best video on this problem that I have seen yet! Well done!
Good for you man. These dealerships will take advantage of us in a minute. Thanks for your time and video!
No problem 👍
Thanks for the video! You’re right to ALWAYS question the dealer.
Yeah but I've been lied to many times from different dealers and know better because I'm a diesel mechanic and they do not know I'm am!!!
Thanks for your video. Very informative. Appreciate you going through the trouble of getting under the truck and pointing out the parts.
That’s why they call them Stealer- ships

Good for you on the smart fix and saving huge dollars for nothing!
I have personally just had my 2017 Ram 3500
Def/ egr deleted , no more issues!
More power, more fuel economy 👍
If you do delete the EGR , does that disable the whole DEF system without removing the rest of the parts ? TIA . . . .I've got a light on my dash right now throwing a P202C code. They say it is the upper heater but can't even order one until June 30th. , they looked at it April 28th. So, driving it hoping it doesn't throw the 150 mile warning before I can get something done . Im in a state that doesn't do inspections so I'm really leaning toward losing a few parts on a bumpy road .
Where do I take my truck to if I wanna delete
@@b10santaana98 you will have to go online snd dig around for a shop that will do deletes. Depends on your state . In my case , The egr was deleted by adding a EFI live tune ( 45 hp ) increase for fuel economy. The egr is left in the closed position snd the computer reprogrammed as not to notice it any more. The hard ware remains as it still looks operational but the wiring harness is disconnected and ends taped for water intrusion protection.
The def delete involves remove the entire exhaust and related hardware, the def tank remains and a new flow pro exhaust was installed.
The truck drives better, sounds better, breathes better, and 15-20% increase in fuel economy.

DEF is the worst thing the feds did to diesel trucks. More problems and money to fix your truck . fuel is expensive enough and we have to buy and keep full this pig piss that helps keep the black exhaust down . I Will keep my 05 ram 3500 with a 3rd gen 5.9. So far 231367 miles and still going strong . she is old but allot more reliable than some of the new diesels being sold today.
My 2017 3500 just did this today, cleaned the injector like you said. I took an ice pic to clean it out, it was blocked pretty good. Cleared codes and reset. Engine light off and no codes showing. Thanks for video👍🏻

That shop had the parts cannon fully loaded. Should be ashamed to call themselves mechanics. It's normally a dead give away they have no idea what's actually wrong when they say all parts in the system are faulty.
Nice video
Ah the mechanic at the dealership was actually just a parts salesman.
These dealership mechanics are scroundrels, my brother bought a ford edge but didnt get the key pad codes for the door locks with it and the dealer mech told him it would take an hour hooked up to a computer to retrieve the #'s and it was gonna cost $300. So I found a youtube vid and had him watch it cause it has the #code up under the dash on a sticker which he could look on his own and retrieve for free👍

My 2018 just had the DEF injector fail at 68K miles. A simple ohm check showed the coil open. I've always used the cheap Walmart DEF fluid but I do tow a lot so the injector was clean. Dealer charged me $340 for the new injector. Found it online cheaper but I did not have time to wait for shipment.
Sounds like the Diesel mechanics only come in to work when these “cake” jobs are available to work on.
Great video & information

I wish I could have found a reasonably priced low mile 5.9. I like my new truck but cheaper would have been better

Might as well delete it at that point it costs the same to pay someone to delete it and never deal with it again that it does to fix it
Way cheaper to delete. You can buy a tuner and delete kit for under $1000.
I know some one that had almost the same truck put def in the fuel tank and it was 24k to replace every thing I’d just delete!!!
But does it run loud? After it’s been deleted?
@@MrTrda nope. Put a straight through muffler on it. Mine runs as quiet as stock.
Yep plugging in is not always a definitive diagnosis. Weather the dealer knew the actual problem or not and was going to replace the parts or do whatever you did in the way of cleaning them and charge you for new parts you'll never know. Where I live California 1997 is pre diesel emissions so I just stick with the old ones.
Yeah, same here. These trucks are good, but the def is terrible. All the BS all for nothing.
You should have named the dealer! Warning others of another lying or unqualified dealer!
Thanks for this video. Think I am having the same issue. Will be working on my truck this weekend. First thing I am checking is my injector

Hey brother, thank you so much for this video! I have the same issue. I am going to try this weekend!

Ya, first time I had that happen, DEF delete, straight pipe and tune. Best part is the massive mpg jump.
Screw DEF, my mpg return with current fuel prices will cover the cost of the kit.
I love that my 7.3 idi don’t have a display that could make it say that terrible message.
I miss mine, the IDI was a great runner
Thanks, super helpful. Anything that keeps me away from the dealer will save me thousands of dollars.

Why are all car dealerships damn shady? Good for you brother! I don't trust any dealerships, and your situation is a prime example
Thanks for the video bro I did end up paying $3200 to the dealer to replace the def pump.
Great info, my buddy just installed a def delete on his truck. Eliminates the b.s.
Cost him like $2000 at the shop.
Costs a lot less in my own garage. But I do have a lift that makes things a bit easier!
Walked into the dealership with every intention on buying a brand new 2021 ram 2500. Left with a 2006 Ram 3500 5.9 Cummins. None of that emissions crap under the hood.
Nothing wrong with a 5.9
Great video. I just got this message this morning. Going to start troubleshooting from the injector and supply line. Thank you.
I am so glad I got the banks idash and pedal monster. The idash monitors all of the temps including the transmission ( 68rfe) piece of crap. Would like to install the intake horn and boost tubes .
yeah, we had the same thing on a new Ram diesel back in 2018, and the dealer replaced injector, pump, tank, AND filler hose with cap! Shotgun approach!! Would have been around $3,000., but since we have a fleet of these, we got a HUGE discount! GREAT job on fixing that yourself! Saved yourself a TON of money AND time!! Yeah, probably old DEF caused the crystals to form.. Common problem, since DEF is mostly distilled water, and evaporates quickly, leaving just the urea, and that stuff gets like rocksalt!
Yeah they wanted 3k just for pump an injector only. I couldn’t afford to maintain a fleet of them it would be costly. Unfortunately the pump went out finally a few weeks ago but I fixed it myself. I did at least make it a few months long by cleaning the injector. Thanks for watch the video and leaving a comment.
The age of the DEF does not matter as far as crystallization is concerned, old DEF or new DEF both will crystallize. Peak has developed BlueDEF Platinum that is supposed to help keep the DEF from crystallizing.
Ram dealerships employ $100k+ techs and they make that much because to just throw parts and labor at failures instead of troubleshooting! Great job fixing this issue
Yeah it’s crazy like most places are like that now. Forget troubleshooting just Throw parts at it no matter cost.
It's criminal what they charge for parts nowadays, there's no way they can tell me it cost that much for a pump.
Yup! That’s why it’s called the Stealership… goto a good aftermarket shop that works on hourly pay. Not flat rate. So they will fix the problem and not bring out the parts cannon and hope for the best… I would never work for a dealership again!! Rip everyone off!
Dealer told me pump and tank are a sealed unit so thanks for the information
The pump is a sealed unit but you can definitely remove the pump from the tank.
this happened on my 2016 ram last winter, the warning gave me 240 kilometers to limp mode, problem was I was about 300 kilometers from home. I just kept driving thinking the tow bill would be less the closer to home I was. Low and behold it got me home anyway but the warning on the cluster said limp mode on the next start, the next morning when I started the truck it decided to give me another 80 kilometers to limp mode, took it straight to the dealer and they said the def injector failed and replaced it under warranty. Have not had a problem since then.
That sucks but I’m glad you got it fixed. Plus it was under warranty so that’s good!
semi i drive at work is 2016 Western Star w/ the newer model 15 liter Detroit Diesel. The company deleted the factory DEF system. Truck runs better, gets higher MPG, more power, its tuned to pull hills... it pulls hills bleve me.

I don't think the dealership ever had those parts. I think they knew what was wrong, but would never tell you that. As if they could charge you for the job, but without doing any work.
every time i get any work done i always check to make sure it looks like something had been done. i have heard people say they took their car in and where charged but no work was done.
That's the 1st thing I thought of also cause many people aren't mechanically inclined enough to get under the truck& look for there selves!!!
@@4MRanch Always tell the dealer when you book your truck in, that if they have to replace ANY parts, you want your old parts in a box so you can take them home.

I had the same message pop up. I removed the DEF injector and noticed the crystalized DEF almost blocking the hole into the SCR. I cleaned out the blockage and the injector using distilled water. Also used the Android "Alfa OBD" app to actuate the DEF injector with the test "DEF Reductant Doser Pump Override Test" after placing it into a container. It causes the DEF injector pump to run for approximately 6 1/2 minutes. After the time is up you make sure it pumped 85 ml to 115 ml (1/2 cup) of DEF. Mine tested good. I replaced the DEF injector gasket and reinstalled the injector to the SCR. I've been problem free now for 6 months. Part of my normal maintenance will be to remove the DEF doser injector annually and remove any crystalized DEF with distilled water. I find it to be an easily preventive service process to incorporate into my normal maintenance routine.

Love my 21 Ram 2500 but stuff like this makes me appreciate my old 2017 Tundra
Designed to fail, dealers are vultures.
They need to recall these. It isn't safe to leave you with only 150 miles. There are places in the west where it may be over 300 before you can find a place that can service it. All the while you are stranded in the desert at 114F. Driving at 5mph at those temps will probably over heat and damage the motor too.
You must be in Arizona as well.... I'm in Cochise county south on the 191. If you know the area you know there isn't SHIT around here with any real knowledge when it comes to this kind of thing. I've been thinking of deleting the truck, removed the exhaust system and the def system. Thinking more, I cleaned the hell out of everything including my "full exhaust filter" and I'm going to put it back together tonight. If it's still a problem, I'll keep looking for the delete tuner. if not, I'll wait to do it.

My first time ever commenting on something on the Internet but this def system really sucks but a little bit of information for you I was told by the dealer that as long as you don’t turn your truck off it will not go into limp mode so if you have 150 miles until limp mode and your 300 miles away from home you’re good as long as you don’t turn your truck off but that’s something I don’t want to try And everybody with the ram truck should check out motor city mechanic the guy seems to know his stuff and I thank him
Yes they do suck. It would be good if it didn’t put you in limp mode by not shutting the truck off. I don’t know if I trust any dealers at this point but if it happens again I’ll test it out
Do a full delete and tune and you’ll forget about any emissions related problems for about 1400$ in parts
If it gives me any more trouble I probably will end up doing it
You can drive an unlimited distance as long as you don't turn the truck off or put it in park. Set the parking brake and shift to neutral to refuel. 👍
Add a water methanol injection if you're out of warranty. It helps clean the DPF and will delay regeneration from about 110 miles to over 200 miles. Really helps with MPG. Diesel Power magazine did a study b4 they went under...

Glad I could help
He wasn’t going to replace nothing he was going to do just what you did and charge you for it all!
Hey man. Thanks for the video! I have the same problem. I'll clean my injector first!!!
Did it fix your problem
Had this exact thing happen to me with my previous 2015. Happened while loaded in Indiana and I live in WV scared me to death I wasn’t gonna make it home lol. Ended up unplugging one of the batteries and tried starting it to reset it and that worked long enough to get me home but mine started at 200 miles. I ended up spending about 5k though. Crazy how the prices were different for you and I lol.
5k on what exactly?
Thanks for doing this video. 😊
i got that dash msg as well and had to shut it down on the interstate, got towed to dealer and waited till mon opening, they jerry rigged it so I could make it home 3 states away while towing my rv, got home and filed a lemon law case and fca wrote me a check.... ALL DEF systems are bad from the the get go, it is just if yours acts up or not and they know it which is why they don't even argue the claim!!! poor cummins had to do it though otherwise those tree huggers in CA would have had them in court forever, sad sad sad
Got a son went to UTI and was working for a dealership when he finished school. He remembers how crooked the technician whether or not the vehicle is under warranty.
Same thing happened to me used a steamer and it just melted the crystallization away and the truck ran perfect
