I have only ordered directly from arrow twice, both times being limited editions. Both boxes were damaged with no care given to how they were packed. They wouldn't discuss replacements, but did knock a little off the price. I'm done with them. Orbit, on the other hand, has amazed me , as well. They're the best. Helpful video, Tim. Thanks.
Kino is horrible at buying and shipping. Firstly, they immediately cancelled three orders I placed with them. When I contacted them by email, they were apologetic and said they would get the order ready for shipping. It was close to three weeks before I heard from them again and when I did, it was only to discover they had mixed up a title. But I was told it was too late to change it. Yet, because I had had to order via email quoting an order number they had immediately cancelled, I had no idea there would be a mixup in titles. They tried to tell me that I may like this other title. I replied that I know I would because I had previously ordered from them. Then the response became that I could send it back and request the one I had wanted, completely overloooking the fact it was a sale title. The next surprise was finding they had mailed an item with a Canadian address to Tennessee. How you get Canada mixed up with Tennessee, I will never know. I could tell by the tracking updates that there was a problem. I immediately emailed. It was a week and a half before I heard back due to the Christmas holidays. I was then asked if I still wanted the order. I said yes, but could we change the one title I had previously raised. No, they couldn’t because ‘it is ready to ship.’ Yet, it was a week and a half before it actually shipped. All in all, it was two months after placing the order before I got it. At that point I wasn’t going to even try replacing the title in question because heavens knows how long this would take or how much more it would cost me in finances and time. But I learned something important: never order directly from Kino ever again! As for “order from the place that made the disc,” I’m not sure how you achieve that when the bulk of the boutique labels contract the making of the disc out to others.
I’m sorry that happened to you with Kino. As for the place that “makes the disc” I’m talking the label who actually makes everything that entails what the disc is and promotes it. Even since the beginning of DVD 3rd party companies such as Cinram would do actual production, but it doesn’t change that a Criterion movie is a Criterion movie. They did the transfer, the special features, menu, they do promotion, and set it up for distribution. That’s what I mean by the ones who make the disc….the ones responsible for everything about what that disc actually entails.

Have people lost their minds? Records? They scratch and are horrible sounding that’s why they went out in the first place but people are buying them again it’s crazy. But the latest technology of 4K discs are out. It’s like we’re going backwards
Wish there was a place to get hard copy of Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, and other streaming platforms movies exclusively to them… I like that Disney is doing it a little bit..
Thanks for the great info, Tim. I wasn't aware of a couple of the sites, especially Hamilton Book. You're right about Arrow shipping. I ordered one blu-ray from them and was surprised that it came in a simple plastic envelope w/o any padding to protect a new issue disk. Also, those Criterion flash sales are great but their shipping disappointed me. I pigged out and ordered 3 blu-rays but they shipped them in those cardboard envelopes that are glued together. When it arrived via USPS, the cardboard had torn and was crudely taped together. The disks were okay but one case had a small chip taken out of it. I contacted Criterion and they said that they'll ship the blu-rays in a better box if you order 4 or more. The moral of the story is if you order more than one blu-ray, you'd best order 4 to get the premium packaging! Lol Thanks again for the informative video.
Gruv is extremely overrated and I'll never buy from them again. I purchased from them once and only bc as a new buyer I got 20% off. The 2 movies I got from them were essentially returned items rewrapped in that shrinkwrap stuff you see at Best Buy Black Friday sales, flimsily packaged, no slipcovers and generally not NICE quality. On top of that, the store itself is very limited in their selection. If it isn't first-run Hollywood, they essentially don't carry it.
Gruv is especially Universal Studios direct to consumer so their selection is based off their library. If it’s an in print Universal title it should be on their site, but yeah not a whole lot passed that. I’ve ordered a bunch from them and never experienced getting anything different than the same stuff I would get from anywhere else so that’s disappointing about your experience. Did you contact them? Their customer service is quite good.
I would never buy direct from shout studios. They are awful and treat customers poorly. They also don’t honor their own terms of service which nothing to the other insane things they haven’t been fined or had legal actions brought against them. Walmart takes care of their products better & on release date more than they do 😂

Almost everything comes in bubble mailers with damage. I try to buy as little from Walmart as I possibly can movie wise. No care is given in the shipping process. A substantial amount of these stores ship internationally. In fact a couple mentioned weren’t even US based stores such as Arrow and Powerhouse. It’s rare to run across online storefronts that don’t offer international shipping.
