- When you own a movie, you’re a custodian of that movie for life. In this video, we’re chatting about the importance of physical media and how the streaming wars and studio mergers led to certain movies disappearing (forever?). Bonus feature: a show and tell of my movie collection.

Physical media will always be important because once you have an original copy of something it won’t be edited. It won’t be censored. And you can watch it anytime you want you don’t have to worry about some streaming services taking it down and when will it be back. Physical media all the way.
Plus it looks great on a shelf lol. But yes, once you have the copy, it’s yours and no company can take it from you. It won’t disappear, it won’t be edited, and you get to do whatever you want with it

I never got rid of cds and DVDs. I am 53, I grew up to see the birth of vhs and DVDs, the rise and fall of video/dvd rental, and sadly the slow decline over the decades as people purged their collections in pursuit of the 'perfect' looking home. Even back then, I couldn't see the point of paying a subscription to watch what I already own. When the prices went up, I wasn't surprised. I spent a ton of money buying DVDs, and while the minimal lifestyle is tempting, nothing is more satisfying when the internet goes offline (and it does sometimes) than being able to watch a movie you love because you own the disc. I kept all mine too others just got rid of all their physical stuff.
I'm 63 and still have my collection of dvds,vinyl and even VHS, can't beat a nice solid collection .
@@xenontouchstone ... I've recently gathered up over a thousand DVD's and nearly 500 CD's, after a divorce five years ago, took away a lifetimes collection due to a lack of storage at the time. I now have three free standing shelves dedicated, all of them bought for pennies from people getting rid of their collections. I'm so glad that I saw the writing on the wall before the rot set in ...
My vcr and vhs tapes still work perfectly( should get one of those red camero rewinders) I live in a weird dead zone and tried to mirror from my phone to my TV but even that tech is obsolete and my phone won't download the app anymore. I'll never give up my vhs and d v d
thats also why i still have the odd thing on VHS not everything made the jump to DVD let alone blu-ray
Amen sister! You are preaching to the choir. I am an old movie buff and am rebuilding my DVD collection. Let's talk about how there is now "editing" to rewrite bits and pieces of movies and shows trying to correct "wrong" thinking. How can we ever learn how we have become who we are as a culture if we have everything sanitized? That alone is a good reason to reclaim the originals. I am sure we are not the only ones who feel this way. Keep up the good work.
This is especially prominent with books where they are re-written to agree with someone's view of how things should be.
Well said! I was about to say the same thing. This re-editing of films for various reasons is absolutely appalling and the thing is, there's not much publicity about this. You'd think directors and writers would be screaming their heads off, but they're not. It's like a bunch of Victorians being exposed to 80s comedies.
Technically you are still living by the Marie Kondo Method because these DVDs/Blu-rays are giving you joy. So keep the collection going!

This 100%. I used to buy quite alot of dvds of movies I wanted to see, especially when cheap. Now before I go to buy one, I think "am I going to rewatch this or do I just want to see this". Still have dvds but they are way more currated.
Yes, ironically, she did NOT follow Marie Kondo way, because she sold off her DVDs for a huge loss and now has to re-buy them.....
People thought I was weird for having so many physical copies, but now I feel justified in owning 731 movies on blu-ray or 4k, plus about 40 seasons of TV shows.
Wow. I got about 350 but nothing close to your collection. Are they all single copies or do you have multiple versions of some movies? It is nice knowing that when you want to watch an old favorite, it is right at your fingertips and you don't have to hunt all over the streaming services hoping one of them have it.

I have 805 =) I use the app Movie Buddy to keep track of them all, as would accidentally buy multiple copies of the same movie. It took me four days to catalogue them all lol
My sister keeps telling me I should stop buying books and switch to using things like Kindle. I told her that she needs to pay attention to all of these book bans.
Absolutely. You only have to look at the sheer amount of books that are getting the hell edited out of them. Unless you own an old physical copy, you soon won’t be able to read a lot of them in their original form. Road Dahl books are being tampered with at the moment but it’s been going on for decades with other authors.
@@GrilloTheFlightlessA good book will almost without a doubt offend someone somewhere even classics like the Laura Ingalls Wilder series. It’s part of life. I homeschooled my two kids for a year when we lived I a school district that neither of my kids liked. One of the assignments for my son was to read a particular book that took place in the 1950s which had racial and homophobic slurs in it. He complained the entire time about them but I told him that 1)I was proud of him for being offended and 2) a lot of things in life will make you uncomfortable so you need to learn now how to deal with it.
Too True!! My husband and I LOVE books, I love physical books he reads almost everything on his Kindle. I love physical books because they are always there when you need them and there is just something about a physical book. I love libraries and have numerous library cards, libraries are my happy place. ❤

So glad that many people outside the 'collector's bubble' are starting to realise the importance of physical media. Whether it's movies, music or books, the only way to ensure you have access to media in the future is to buy a physical copy of it.
But the secret to that is owning copies of the files. No need for discs.

@@Omar_Little True -- yes, one of these says I'll put all my DVDs on a hard disk. You do bring up a good point it's either having the files somewhere -- whether on a hard disk or on physical media .
Yes, but often the only way to get a DRM free copy of the files is to rip them from a disc. So you may as well keep the disc as well.

I collect DVDs. It is so much easier for me to look through my collection than wander streaming services looking for what I want to watch. Plus, I have the original theatre versions of Star Wars on DVD. Disney can't reach through my internet connection and take those back.
The original theatre version of Star Wars are rare now. Hold onto them with your dear life! My husband only had them on VHS.

Search around for the “Despecialized” editions of the Star Wars Trilogy. The finest available versions of the trio.
Yeah, there is 2disc releases of original trilogy movies, the original versions wereon bonus discs... picture/audio quality is guite bad though.

@@DVDhoarder Yes! The Harmy editions, are actually quite nice! It was a really special time, watching them exactly the way I saw them in the theater.
I don't remember what specifically gave me the desire to start, but 4 months ago I started gathering my favorite films and TV shows from all 31 years of my life. I have spent $2,000+ but now own over 300 films almost entirely on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray, the majority purchased used on eBay with an average cost of $6 a film. I absolutely love knowing I own them forever, that I can watch them in the best quality and that they can't be taken away from me.
I even started hosting movie nights with my friends, and they're loving the films I'm showing them so far. It fills me with joy seeing so many amazing movies at my finger tips. And I will always have them. 😁
I also have Anastasia! Love that movie. But why not Hercules? 😂 I have that too with the slipcover and just watched it the other day. Such gorgeous animation. I'm watching many of these movies again for the first time in decades and on Blu-ray it's stunning how absolutely beautiful the images are. Couldn't be happier!
Should have just invested in a NAS and created your own Plex server, you would still own them forever and you could have so much more with way easier access to your library.
This is why I collect old VHS tapes that never made it to DVD let alone streaming services.
I used to have VHS and miss it but now it’s so hard to come by and when you can find it, it’s EXPENSIVE.
@@BloodyHorrorLover not sure where you live but here in Texas it's not too expensive. I bought 5 VCRs for $15 at a thrift store. My local Movie Trading Company sells tapes for 99 cents up to $3.
I'm sure I can still find the majority of those tapes in digital format somewhere.

Lots of those are getting released on bluray probably every month. Vhs exclusive content will only be home videos one day
I prefer physical media over streaming because I actually spend less time staring at a screen and when I do watch something I actually make the time to WATCH it (not half ass stare at it while scrolling through my phone) because the act of physically getting up, selecting a disk and putting it in the player is almost like a commitment I'm making to give what I'm watching my undivided attention. As such it's a more enjoyable "fullfilling" experience.

About 4 months ago I just cancelled all of my streaming services and just went back to my physical media collection of VHS (yes I still have them), DVDs, and Blu Rays (I don't have any 4ks). Streaming services have become very anti-consumer and I'd rather be able to watch what I want when I want.

I still have some of my old vhs tapes too! And occasionally I find them in good condition at Goodwill. The video quality tends to degrade over time though.
VHS can be copied to digital. I have a VHS player connected to the computer. You need the software and a USB video capture dongle or device. Then edit and convert to MP4.

First off, mad respect for having Blues Brothers in your stack, classic! The physical media situation is affecting books, video games, music, movies and I think the boiled frog analogy is spot on. The other issue is the devices that we need to play them becoming discontinued. CD,DVD players are going away too, so you might want a backup plan.
So happy to see more and more people embracing dvds an cds again.

As a 60+ baby boomer, I'm not into streaming services so we kept all of our DVDs (some blue ray) which now is close to 800+ in zippered cases by categories! My hubby & I love different types (he's sci-fi, action, Westerns & WWII - I'm old classics, some dramas, comedies, documentaries & cartoons) we will never be bored & can watch to our hearts content!
I'm pushing 40 and I never made the transition to streaming either. My thought always was, "well if I can't actually have it then why am I paying for it?"
Like maybe if I only plan to ever watch it once, and even then I usually just pirate it. And if I actually end up enjoying it enough to want to watch it more than once, then I usually _do_ end up buying it!
That's what I have as well. I didn't want to get rid of them but needed to decrease their footprint

Something I love about physical media, is all the bonus and behinds the scenes content they include. I've learned so much more about my favorite movies by watching a commentary, or listening to a special effects feature.

The Shrek DVDs were absolute treasures of games and activities! Fairy Tale Idol was a masterpiece.
Agreed! Lord of the Rings has almost a half dozen commentary tracks PER movie, and the bonus documentaries are great.

One thing that just occurred to me is that once we begin collecting these DVDs, we're not obligated to put them on display in the living room like we used to. We can easily keep them neatly organized in a closet, in a drawer, on a shelf in lesser-used room, garage, etc... That way we can keep our living spaces decluttered, but still have the movies we want.
Set up plex, rip em. Put em in disk binders in a closet somewhere.
I recycle the cases and keep the discs in CD/DVD Wallets. 40 Discs now takes up less space than 3 DVD boxes.
Avoid the garage. Extreme hot/cold and humidity will actually kill the discs over time
DO NOT use a garage. Keep them in a relatively climate controlled/clean area. This excludes a nasty hot attic as well

We've recently started borrowing movies from our local public library. They have tons of movies available through inter library loan, multiple format options. Far more than streaming offers! And it's free!
Also library book sales sell DVDs for cheap or affordable prices that were donated or not getting checked out.
That's what we do!
Go to goodwill or St Vincent DePaul or half price books tons of CDs DVDs

I love seeing people realizing that physical media has certain advantages after now almost two decades of me saying it and having people look at me like I'm from Mars. And nowadays, if you have physical media, you can digitize/upload it too, and have the best of both worlds. Yes, even vinyl albums or old reel to reel tapes - it can all be stored in the cloud if you want.

I did the same thing and gave away most of my DVD collection to family and friends thinking I would just stream from now on.. However I have found the quality of the audio and video can be hit and miss. This is why I own a nice TV and Theater system, to enjoy the sound and a high quality image. I have now started to buy back the movies I love. This is the first time watching your content Thanks for the video. 😀

And then it's a rainy windy day, great day for hanging out under a blanket with a favorite movie. Then your internet goes out. No streaming. I'll always keep my DVDs and DVD player.
When the Internet went down for a few weeks where I live (a telecom node burned) my brother came begging me for a few DVDs to have something for the family to watch.
And you can get chargeable portable dvd players. So if the power goes out, you should be right for a movie or two before needing to charge again
If u have a 4K tv you should try and upgrade to a blu-ray player and blu-ray discs.. you’ll see the quality is incredible and you can also still play your DVDs on it(;

My husband and I got sick with Covid-19 back in November last year. It was then that we realized that the streaming selection on older movies was lacking in taste. All the movies we wanted to rewatch weren't on the streaming services we had. We also have started buying dvs; our local Thriftstore sells them for as little as .25cents each! I've started building a collection of all the thriller and action movies we enjoy rewatching!
Kept all my DVDs, CDs, vinyl, cassette, VHS.
Go to thrift stores and book store's.
Don't forget those old Black & White classics. There is a lot of great old Movies, and TV shows that were never put online. The old monster movies, "Frankenstein's Monster", "Dracula", "The Mummy" & "The Invisible Man". Heck, "Hitchcock Presents" "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" both the movie and the TV Series. All the old Shirly Temple movies. There's just so much great old stuff out there.

Very entertaining video! It's great to see these pop up in my feed, which tells me more and more people are getting back into physical media. I've downsized quite a bit of my movie collection, but over the last couple years in particular I have started picking up titles again, mainly the ones I know I will want to watch again, or obscure one-offs I am recommended by other UA-cam channels. I think I am going to need a bigger shelf though, I am running out of space. 🤔
I used to just rely on Netflix, but then one day a couple of my nightly shows I would fall asleep to, like the Twilight Zone, were taken off the service. Even recently that happened--I wanted to watch Jaws in January of this year, and apparently it was pulled from Netflix late December. Thankfully my Mom had a DVD version of it so I was able to borrow it from her without having to pay for it (yet another perk of having physical media!).

I’ve always been a physical collector, though I’ve started to dip toes into buying movies digitally due to lack of space, though I’ll always buy my favorites on physical, including a sizable Disney collection….meanwhile I’ve recently gotten into collecting laserdiscs last year. I’ve recently completed my collection of every available home video cut of Star Wars.
-OG “theatrical” cuts on the 2006 dvd bonus discs, I also have the laserdiscs
-1997 Special Edition on laserdisc and vhs
-2004 DVD set (this is the one that introduced Hayden in as a ghost)
-2011 Blu Ray set
-2019 set (these are the current on Disney+, and likely the last revision)
Never got rid of my collection. But its all on one bookcase, where i can prune it to perfection like a zen gardener...
I’ve been contemplating getting rid of my dvds because my partner doesn’t see why I need them. We don’t even have a dvd player any more! But this has convinced me exactly why I shouldn’t! Thank you!
Basic DVD players are like £20-£30 here in Britain, so perhaps worth getting one again in case they become more scarce in the future.
I had to size down my apartment from 4 rooms to one, so I took all my DVD‘s out of their cases and put them into a DinA5 folder with just the paper….now I have all of the discs and don‘t have all the plastic cases that cluttered up my book case which I had to get rid off in the move.

The animated show the Boondocks is one of my all time favorites. It has two episodes banned from future broadcast because it spoofed Tyler perry and Black Entertainment Television Entertainment and they threatened to sue. I have the complete seasons uncut on DVD. That is the only way these episodes wont be lost to history. I can watch them whenever i want
I am a child of the VHS boom, but I am old enough to remember when you could only see movies in the cinema or broadcast TV and so the palpable excitement of being able to own a movie is a very real thing to me, and it's never gone away. I saw people get Netflix and discard their dvd collections, often, I noted, a guys dvd collection being junked after endless nagging from his wife, and I couldn't get on board, I love my movie collection and it benefitted no end from my pals discarding theirs. I am lucky enough to live in a house with a room that I designated The Library, and in it are all my books and movies on VHS to blu ray. It is a genuine source of joy to me to just look at them all (although, I'll admit that it is sometimes a bit of a physical doomscroll...)
This week I've watched episodes of Deadwood, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Sargossa Manuscript, all brilliant in their own way, and none of them on streaming (as far as I know)

Vhs or bust! I used to burn (yes back when creating your own cd or dvd was called burning and cold take HOURS) my own dvds with my favorite anime that you couldn't obtain stateside. I truly miss those days.

I have acquired over 2,000 movie DVD’s. I have always felt that having an original was extremely important. It cannot be edited, cancelled, minimally available, etc. I salute your reinvigorated commitment to physical media!

Yeah I feel like all of us misunderstood the "intentional living" aspect of minimalism, and over idolised all those youtube thumbnails of people sitting on floors.
I have a very similar story, an obsession with watching minimalism videos slowly turned into an obsession with decluttering. Thankfully instead of getting rid of everything, I did keep my all-time favourite DVDs, or a couple that were rare and irreplaceable. Now that I'm rebuilding the collection (for all the same reasons you mention, plus special features!) I'm following the same principal, and just getting the cream of the crop. I'm much happier with my DVD collection now than when it was random and unfocussed before. But it's taken more time and money than it needed to, compared to if I'd just kept things in the first place. I would still consider myself a "minimalist" in the sense that I only own what I need. But boy, do I need DVDs!

Agree, I think all minimalist have had to go through some kind of decluttering obsession fase. I know I did many times. Really decluttering is not the hardest part of being a minimalist, it is learning to "add" to your life and life it. :)
I have been focusing on adding movies, music and games back in my life. Going physical is both a fun, stressful and expensive journey, but it is nice knowing V for vendetta is there when I need it ;)
@@donovanmedieval Mari Kondo did not tell people to discard everything. She taught them to keep what made them happy. A lot of people dispensed of their physical media to save space, under the impression that they could just watch everything on a streaming service, which made them happy at the time. They weren't evaluating whether the items actually made them happy- they just assumed the pleasure would be replicable with a streaming service. But these media corporations have proven untrustworthy in terms of quality and availability and as such, people know they need the physical content.
I learned this lesson early, when Disney re-edited the German version of my favorite childhood movie „The little Mermaid“ („Arielle“ in German). They changed all voice actors and even the lyrics of the songs. And it just felt so wrong to me and ruined my watching experience. I didn’t have a copy at that time and I had to dig deep and it was hard to get an OLD copy (which they stopped selling immediately).
This was all when Netflix just began to get popular. But I learned my lesson and keep hard copies of my favorite shows and movies.

Hold on to your precious physical media books CDs DVDs Blu-rays they're going to become more and more important down the line. Also who wants to keep renting paying and paying and paying for your favorite media and a place to store it month after month sounds like a racket from hell. When you have your own physical media you can watch it when you want and without it watching you.

I had Robocop, Nightmare on Elm Street, Commando, Dirty Dancing, Weird Science, Officer and Gentlemen, Wild West and a couple more great movies.

The Princess Bride was one my defining childhood movies: "You killed my Father, prepare to die" is such a great quote, but the one off joke lines stick with my family and are repeated nearly on a monthly to weekly basis. When the large HD flatscreen tv's started coming out, I thought my dvd collection was made obsolete because of the lack of picture quality. But when I found out about being able to "upscale" the picture quality from my existing dvd player to my 50" tv, yeah, thank god I didn't have to get rid of them. If anything, I just keep them in thick binders and save on shelf space. Nothing will come between me and my twelve Lord of the Rings discs, lol, especially their bonus material!
Around twenty years ago, I bought an insanely huge The Matrix boxed set, on DVD. It has about nine discs and probably a couple of days worth of video. I kept it ready for when I bought myself a big wide-screen TV. I finally bought one of those in 2010, but I still haven't watched any of the movies since I saw them at the cinema, all those years ago. I've never really been back in the mood to watch them. @@SheilaEnglish2 It's been so long I hope I'm remembering correctly... it's the cable out from the dvd player that goes to an HDMI connection at the back of the hdtv. It was either that or that I was playing the dvd on my laptop, and again, a mini-HDMI port from the laptop connecting to the tv... the picture quality goes up to 1080p.

I know that The Matrix dvd set. It’s a cool set but you shouldn’t watch The Matrix on a big screen tv on dvd, that takes away all its visual splendor. I’ve seen it on 4k and imo they are still amazing.

I did a purge a while back and regret it. I was running out of space and decided to put a bunch of my movies in a case and threw all the boxes away. Many of the CDs, even though I barely watched some of them, ended up getting damaged in the case and so I started the hunt to buy some of them again just to find out many were out of print and hard to find. I mean, I love Carnosaur 1 and 2 as goofy B-movie dinosaur shlock, but when I saw how much some of them were going for on eBay, I said 'nope'. But I did eventually find the out-of-print ones on eBay for decent prices, and I've learned my lesson of not throwing cases away.
They're also worth next to nothing without their cases and original inserts.
If you're the only one watching them why does it matter what they're worth?
I had a similar experience when I moved cross-country. And then I ended up getting a job at a spot that sold used media, so my shelf started to regain titles again. Now, 10+ years later, I'm at nearly 3000 pieces in an entire room dedicated to the collection. (Also, yeah, those damn binder sleeves scratched the hell out of the ones I'd initially kept.)
Bad enough to get rid of them, but to throw them away instead of donate or sell them? That’s just criminal. And pollutes the environment.
You should back them up on a drive or server so they can take up less space in your room
Just finished getting rid of 95% of my VHS tapes and replaced most with DVD’s . Have since added over 600 more at 50 cents to a dollar each. Most recently was Flash Gordon from 1940…6 episodes. Now I lend them back and forth with friends. What a great hobby.
My boyfriend & I just started converting our (almost 1500 movie) DvD collection to a digital copy to stream on Jellyfin. So we still own all the physical media but with the convenience of a personalized streaming service. Amazing for shows & collections. If you have a pc with a dvd burner (or can buy one for like $30) and have 10TB of data storage you can totally cut the cord on streaming services. When we merged our collections we discovered that we have duplicates we can trade in for dvds we both want at the local used media store.
TLDR: get as much TB hard drives as you can afford, digitize your collection with a dvd burner, get Jellyfin, & start watching your own collection easier. Also it's portable for traveling.

I’ve done the same! I bought a new DVD player last year and bought all my favorite movies on DVD second hand. It’s actually a relief knowing I can watch all my favorite things whenever I want again💗
At the time of writing I have 1,888 titels on DVD/BD, discs amount to 2,000+. I used to run a DVD store and had about 300 titles. Now I always check bargain bins etc, most people in Sweden have gone from physical media to purely running streaming so many titles I have picked up used for about 20cent to 2 dollars. I still buy some limited movies that may cost 30-40usd simply because they do not exist.
I do not have a large dwelling so I made boxes and bought these paper cases (the one that you often get driver discs for PC on and write on them, they can hold 1-3 discs) and I made boxes out of thin MDF to hold them. I guess everything fit in two standard IKEA movers boxes.

It's good you're doing a video discussing this issue. This is all about the "You will own nothing and be happy" state of consumerism. I've been warning people around me for years that this push to streaming will be the death of any content you "own". The various corporations have now been successful to get people to accept this scam of streaming. Not only do you not have any control over content you are interested in, the quality of the streams are also not the same as physical media due to compression. Every movie I like, I have always bought on physical media.
But having your favorite content on physical media isn't the end of the problem. The optical media the movies are stored on have a finite shelf life and can go bad. I had this happen with a Disney DVD. The disc looks somewhat fine until you really look at it. A haze started to form on part of the disc which looks to be oxidation of the reflective layer that holds the pits that the laser reads. This can happen from the separation of the plastic casing that allows air to penetrate the disc. I couldn't get Disney to respond back to me on getting a replacement so I ended up having to buy another copy.
So this brings up what everyone should do which is to rip the movies to files that you can store on a hard drive. But the MPAA has made this difficult by putting DRM onto many of the discs where you have to jump through hoops to make a digital copy of a disc you bought. In the case of 4k discs, you also have to have a specific 4k drive that has firmware which doesn't lock you out from reading a 4k disc for the purposes of ripping it to a digital file.
And because the brain washed masses have accepted the "You will own nothing and be happy" world, getting new movie releases on physical media is going to start to go away as the distribution model post theatrical showing will only be via some streaming service.
Cancelled all our streaming services and even let Amazon Prime expire. I started buying Blu Rays again for the first time in years. There's a used record store near me that has a ton of cheap blu rays and DVDs.
We hit Bookman's and Zia in Phoenix on a monthly basis and are ALWAYS amazed at the selection and VERY cheap prices of DVDs - and we rarely leave empty handed!

About 10 years ago I started making the switch to digital as a means of lightening the load and decluttering my life and sold all my dvds/blurays/etc. I had a friend say I should because the companies you "buy" digital media from can and will remove things from your library without notice or compensation and I was like stop with all the doomsaying! He was right and things have started vanishing from my games and media libraries and the companies have told me to kick dirt basically when Ive contacted them about this. Over the past year Ive been rebuying physical discs again and I will never go down that road again of getting rid of all my movies and games.
Yep. I saw this coming a long time ago, and I have owned my 'comfort watches' for some time. When the WEF said 'You will own nothing and you will be happy' they really meant it. I store NOTHING on a 'cloud' either. Thank you for making this video.

I so loved this video! Your fun to watch. It is so true to be careful of decluttering hype. I do live with a lot less than I did 5 years ago. But, I decluttered all my craft supplies and yes I had to much, but dang I miss it and now I have moved to a much smaller place and could not contain it all but I hate I got rid of it all because I do carve out time now to do something crafty. So, I am bullet Journaling and I will keep my supplies no matter what. I will declutter anything I need to, just to keep my space for bujo supplies.😊 I know a lot of people need to see this video!
I once imported the entire David Suchet Hercule Poirot [ITV] series on DVD from the UK. It cost me an arm and a leg and I've ripped it onto my server in order to watch as it's region 2 (I have a region 2 dvd player but it's much more convenient for me to play it from my network.) I swear it's one of the best purchases I've made. My physical media collection grows slowly but surely. It's the only way to go.

I own that same Les Miserables In Concert : The Dream Cast DVD. I first saw the concert when it was in heavy rotation on PBS in the late 1990s. I got a job at my local PBS station in 2003. I gave info to viewers about purchasing programs that aired on the channel. VHS tapes were all the rage but DVDs starting to get some attention. Because of my job, I learned that distributors could decide to no longer manufacture physical media at will. One day I ordered that Les Miserables DVD because I had a feeling it would go away forever. I received my DVD and within a year, it was no longer available for purchase. That version of Les Miserables : In Concert The Dream Cast is an irreplaceable treasure. I feel so lucky to own it.

I'm in the midst of decluttering... ran across my DVD sets, including all Mary Tyler Moore, Odd Couple, and Honeymooners DVD sets... was saying to myself, "Pass these on to someone who hasn't seen them... you can always buy them again, stream them again the next time you want to watch them..." and so on. Great points! I also love physical media due to the extras (bonus features) that you cannot find on streaming. Also, the audio and video of physical media will generally be of higher quality than streaming especially if you have a 4k disc and invested in a high quality TV and speakers. It can definitely elevate your home viewing experience.
I have over 45,000 VHSs and DVDs. I regret nothing. I love being able to watch Pinball Summer or Bigfoot and Wildboy episodes whenever I want.

I have over a thousand dvds/blu-rays in my collection, but I decided to get rid of all the cases/inserts and just keep the discs in album sleeves bought on Amazon Basics. No regrets and still decluttered! You brought up a very valid point why physicals are important, but another reason is the priceless "Special Features" on these discs that you cannot find anywhere else!!!

I used to collect DVDs and few Blu-Rays back in 2013 but got into a hard stop around 2016 to pay my car and other things. By the end of 2020, working from home and everything, restarted the collecting and curating. I have around 300 movies now. Mostly Blu-Rays and 4Ks and just like 20 DVDs.
While streaming is convenient sometimes, it’s becoming a bad habit to first Google where any movie is or if it’s even on streaming. And with all the platforms, you need to have 2 or at least 3 subscriptions to feel kind of covered in having a good experience and catalog available. But then they have their damn price increases, ad tiers, catalog rotation of their own IPs, and it’s just a nightmare.
Having hit a wall of frustration with the streaming wars, over the last year I've gone from a collection of a couple dozen lingering DVDs to [checks spreadsheet] over 178. The neat thing is how, like you say, it's been a really cheap indulgence, mostly two or three bucks at a time at thrift shops, even for what used to be prestige boxed sets. I've got an excellent tin case of the original King Kong with ooddles of extras, the complete I Claudius, another tin of Band of Brothers ...

After I canceled cable a few years ago, I think I had Netflix for about a year but I never really got into streaming for some reason. I have a ton of books and about 50 DVD’s - (Jaws is in my collection too, love that movie lol)
Oh and I have a cheap-ish but good indoor antenna that pulls in some decent channels. 😊 Idk, with all the mergers, private equity investors, etc.. the prices just keep getting higher because it’s never enough for these people. They always, always want more & I got sick of playing into their greed.
I have a large collection myself. I will admit it’s easier just to stream everything ,but there is something about having your own copy in your hands that you can watch anytime you want. Even when the WiFi goes down. My favorite movie os all time is Star Trek , the wrath of khan. I own so many different versions of it and have watched it over and over and never get tired of it. It’s a masterpiece of pacing, directing and the musical score and the way its used is among the best I’ve ever seen.
I got rid of all streaming services, when I was watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Netflix removed the end scene where Janet, Brad and Dr Scott are crawling around in the dirt. I was outraged that they edited the movie. I canceled my subscription right there and then and I have never looked back. I’m tired of my social media behind full of people complaining about a show/movie being taken off streaming. If you own it physically no one can take it from you, no one can edit the content. It is yours. Physical media always, I currently have 804 in my collection. I work in a second hand store and physical media is one of our best sellers, I love talking to the collectors that come in and adore when I see kids choosing movies. They walk out with stacks of physical media. There’s no better self care, I reckon than going through your collection that you have worked hard to make and own and choosing a movie that means a lot to you and then going through the ritual of putting it on. Streaming is cold and sterile.

I’m really going to show my age here, but this comes down to a question of “what is the original version” of a film. I saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show in theaters at midnight countless times in the late 1970s and 1980s. That brief scene in the dirt at the end was not part of the mainstream theatrical release of RHPS. It was filmed but edited out for length prior to the movie’s wide release. I first saw that scene in a special edition sort of screening at the 8th St Playhouse in NYC in the early 80s (the film was released in 1975). They had got ahold of the trimmed footage and you could tell where they spliced it back in because the film quality was different. I imagine it was cleaned up to match better when home media, and later streaming, happened.
I don't have an exact count but i guarantee i just crossed over 2000 movies. Last i counted was 1900 and some odd. Dvds/blue rays combined. I own less than ten 4k's. Was not impressed "upgrade from blue ray to 4k as i was going from dvds to bluerays.

You are welcome! Before movies get a wide release they are often previewed for audience reaction and small edits are sometimes made to improve pacing. I believe that was the case with the little scene you refer to after the castle takes off in RHPS. It was put back in years later, after the movie gained a huge cult following and there was so much interest in it. So I would imagine rather than Netflix having edited the scene out they were streaming from the wide release theatrical cut that never had it to begin with.
Also, before the age of any type of home media (wow I just sound so old!) I have seen slightly different end credit sequences for RHPS. Just different ways the film was presented when it was on film. For example at one college screening where they rented a 16mm print, after the narrator turns out the light the credits appeared in darkness next to the glowing globe but pictures of the cast did not. You remember little differences like that when you waste your teenage years seeing the same movie in theaters over 100 times, lol!!!
I went through a very similar journey with physical media. Purged everything only for years later to discover these issues as well. I started rebuying DVDs when I realized two of my favorite movies - Dogma and Spice World - weren't streaming anywhere. Spice World really floored me, considering what a cultural phenomena they were. I buy them cheap, mostly from thrift stores or garage sales, eBay if it's a must have that I can't find elsewhere... But I set a rule that it has to be a movie I love, that I would be sad if it weren't available streaming any more (like Spice World and Dogma). I *want* to collect vhs tapes, but I just can't justify that to myself lol. I do not have the space
There's a legend surrounding Dogma... it's the rarest of the DVDs as it's virtually vanished. You own a unicorn!
I'm getting back into this. For a while, the only physical stuff i had was books (e-books just don't do it for me). I'm getting back into collecting DVDs and Blurays for all the reasons you outlined here. Heck, I'll even pick up a VHS from a flea market or used book store if it's just a couple dollars. My goal is to have all my absolute favorite films in some form I see as definitive, but otherwise i just pick up anything I can. It just feels necessary with movies now.
Edit: I'm gonna check out The Proposition now. I don't think I've heard of it before, but I love Nick Cave.

I'm still a huge physical media collector. Nowadays more and more boutique distributors are releasing incredible collector's editions. You should look at the catalogue from Arrow Video, Vinegar Syndrome, Second Sight, Eureka, and Umbrella.

I was super into decluttering back in 2016 too. Marie Kondo everything! And my husband is really into collecting physical DVDs, blue rays and now Ultra HD! I used to be , "well you only need Streaming services and have a digital library instead." Now... I see the logic in obtaining physical media because there are so many streaming services, it is as bad as cable when you add them all up. 🤑
Streaming services are slowly transforming into cable now that there's ads slipped within movies. Ads made sense on free platforms. But when you are paying a monthly fee and still getting ads... 🤔 Well, at least I have my copy of Jaws and Anastasia 🤣
It also keeps you less dependent on having an internet connection. All you need is a DVD player and something to plug it into like your house or car.

I too have begun re-acquiring and going through my old DVD/Blu Ray collection to verify if old discs are scratch free. So much so I now need a small room in my house to store them all. All began one day when I was locked out of my amazon account. All that money on digital media spent, and amazon wouldn't let me access my own stuff.... So I dug out my then medium pile of dvds, ordered a new blu ray player as I couldn't find my old one, and began collecting my new favorites on blu ray (or dvd if not available) via ebay. So far out of 300+ discs tested/played only 2 would not play properly. I still have hundreds upon hundreds still to test, but most are in fairly new condition so chances are they too are all fine. Discs hold up so much better than we assume they do even when they get scuffed up. They are (usually / rare exceptions) cheaper than the digital versions/licenses too which blows my mind when you ignore the 480p vs HD aspect of the visual quality (with regular dvd).
Im no minimalist, so i dont mind collecting movies I'll never watch - but having an actual product to hold in your hands is oddly much more satisfying when I want to watch something. Pullin it off the shelf, reading the cover is just more engaging than scrolling a webpage. Then there is the added fact if money is ever tight I can resell them.... I eventually got access to my prime library back but i have since not purchases another digital license since my return to the disc god, and my optical library is now large enough to open a mid 90's blockbuster. 'Netflix and chill' can f' off!

I've seen a few of these videos, on physical media recently...and no ones mentioned the commentary. Sure the bonus features are a good buying point but I really enjoy listening to the commentary. Streamed movies will never have that. They'll also never have crisp audio regardless of your internet bandwidth.

I became a minimalist when I got laid off years ago and it took me years to get a job. I got rid of 80% of my stuff in the process. I missed my hard-to-find collection of independent movies -- my one regret as streaming companies don't even stream some of them anymore or are not available to stream in my country -- or charge for me to rewatch it.
Great collection you have there. As for my top 3 movies of all time. Oh, that's a tough one. Ok, Back to the Future, Life is Beautiful and The Lion King.

I loved this video. I'm an ardent supporter of physical media as well, and I always will be. I'm with you. It's definitely more prevalent nowadays how much streaming is taking a stranglehold over us movie lovers. They expect us to pay for multiple services, and sometimes, as with your Jaws reference, you can have 5 or more of them and you still can't find the movie you actually want to watch! It's insanity.
I'm so glad I never retired my blu-ray and DVD collection. It takes pride of place in my home's cinema room and I love it. I never have to rent or worry about ads to rewatch my favourite films (or also have the worry of my net dropping out and the movie lower in quality or buffer into oblivion!).
As someone who also enjoys film and the process of how movies are made, I love watching making of's and behind the scenes featurettes, too. Something that is also totally lost to time, if not for physical media. Not a single streaming service have any special features at all! You literally get the movie and that's it. Some films I own have hours upon hours of additional content, and with these streaming services, you lose that entirely. And I don't want to lose that.

I’m almost 60 so i remember when cable tv launched in the 80s and into the 90s when it got so expensive! We would bundle phone, internet and cable but now it’s just as expensive w all the paid streaming subscriptions and way more complicated than it used to be. It’s so much more fun to hunt down those dvds now and always have your favs! I own one dvd (mean girls) but that’s because my husband was in the service for 34 years and I got tired of moving dvds every couple years. I love ❤️ that you watched jaws on vhs w commercials! That’s such a throwback! Happy dvd collecting! I think it’s such a needed hobby! And yes you are a custodian of the dvds you purchase! ❤

The straw that broke the camel's back for me was when Disney+ removed both seasons of The Mysterious Benedict Society after only a year. My family was in the middle of watching it, and then it just disappeared--poof! 😢
Recent DVD and Blu-ray releases of Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers have different songs from the original, because of music licensing deals. So the old VHS copy is the only way to watch the "correct" version. 😢
I agree! I flirted with the idea of tossing my DVDs for about a day but then I realized I'd be losing the director commentaries, the special features, and yes, the theatrical versions! These companies, they just take. More and more. And now they're burying original versions and focus grouping new movies to death. A few smaller prestige films will get to live as they are as will your Transformers-level blockbusters because they were statistically designed to be that way. Where are the middle movies? And what happens to the ones that were already made? Will I not be able to watch Murder in the First, Running Scared (the Billy Crystal, Jeremy Hines one), Narrow Margin or A Few Good Men because burying their IP rights to claim as a tax credit could put an extra dollar in some investor's pocket? What will happen to our legacy of great American filmmaking?
I've been slowly (truly slowly, because finances) reacquiring DVD's and CD's and also trying to be more methodical in how I expand my book collection for several years. I told people this was going to be important about two decades ago but didn't have the space or means to really do much about it. Trying to explain this was met with laughter or worry (implications that I'm paranoid) depending on the individual, until literally last year. Suddenly it's not as weird anymore. 🤷♀️

My grandparents loved the epic films and mafia movies, so they had all these VHS boxes with 2,3 tapes in them.
For me it would be SFF films and animation.
