  • Ep. 194 STARTING MY PERSONAL LANDSCAPE MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
0:07 Introduction to my personal project based on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic that I have just finished.
0:33 I start with some thumbnail layouts and right away I pick the top option that has 5 trunks, three trees and three bushes. I sketch it with pencil on the paper and then trace over it with Sharpie so I can see it better. I try to keep my arm loose and flowing.
2:11 I place carbon tracing paper under my design and trace it onto the substrate. Then I go over the lines with Sharpie again, and I use a ruler to make straight trunks on the trees.
2:42 It looks so small! I might add three yellow sunrays in the sky. I will be trading my project with Jennifer's and doing all the glasswork while she does all the ceramic bits.
3:50 I have selected the colors for the fused parts. I will have to make more fused foliage, so these really depend upon whether I have the glass leftover. I really do not want to buy more fusable glass just for these personal projects. The rounds
4:11 I start loading my kiln shelf by layering the base color. Then I add big frit with tweezers. Next, I add a second color of big frit. Then I show the whole load!
4:49 It's the next day and I open the kiln to see an excellent load! I have the new pieces, so its time to stick them on the mosaic. First I dry lay them to make sure they fit, then I glue them all down with GE Silicone. When I run out of pieces, I know it is time to load the kiln again.
6:36 Another load goes in the kiln.
6:41 12 hours later we see how they fired. Nice! Next, I fit the new pieces on the mosaic.
7:40 I show how I cut an existing piece to fit and then I fuse it again to get the fire-polished edge instead of the cut edge.
8:25 A look at how far I got this week. I almost finished all the foliage. I still need to work on the transition swath and make some more little rounds. Then I'll trade with Jennifer and work on her glass parts.
That's Putting It Together Ep. 194. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

I love that you and Jennifer are collaborating on your personal pieces as well! I have really enjoyed watching you process for the public work, and now your personal piece, and can’t wait to see the public piece installed.

Thank you so much! We've found an excellent way to collaborate on the big mosaic so may as well continue with these two smaller pieces.

Your drawing skills are as great as your mosaic skills. Another masterpiece in the making.

I can do pretty sweeping lines and not much detail!
