Same. I can’t even watch videos about “how close to done is winds of winter” that are more than 5 years old. Or winds predictions videos from 7-8 years ago

This is basically what I've said. George has been working on this story since 1991 and he just turned 76 this week. If Winds gets finished, he should be able to find that renewed motivation for Dream when the finish line is in sight. That is, if he cares enough about cementing his legacy.
He does, it's just that the books are incredibly complicated and he has a high standard of quality for his writing, so it takes him a lot of writing and rewriting to achieve what he wants to achieve
@@kangarooMonkee typo you say 🤔 might be worth seeing how much that dusty old copy is worth in that case. Shame it aint a typo on the cover but the publisher page is the next best thing
My cope is that in order to write winds of winter he actually does have to plan out a lot of a dream of spring. To the point where in order to write the penultimate book, he has to mostly plan out the final book.
He said that his mayor regret regarding ASOIAF is not being wealthy enough to wait until he had every book written to publish them, now he is wealthy enough, I think he will not publish TWOW until he is finishing with ADOS, thats the only thing that make sense, so I think he will take an extra 5 or 10 years but the time between TWOW and ADOS will be a lot shorter
I’ve been hoping that’s why it’s taking so long. I’d imagine it would probably make writing the ending a lot easier if he had the ability to go back and change things in the previous book, so it would make a lot of sense for him to do this.
I don't think people are filled with hopelessness or dread when thinking about Dream. The community has pretty much accepted the reality we will never get this book, it is what it is. The dread is whether or not Winds at least will come out or not. And yeah, Dreams won't be as hard to write, this is typical of all stories. Usually it's the beginning and the end that are the easiest to write, just filling the middle is what's tough, and the transitions between the middle and the beginning/end is what's hard.
Good video. I agree that a dream of spring will be easier to write than winds, but another factor in this puzzle is that Martin intends to write a dunk novel and Blood and fire before a dream.
The good thing is, those are easy projects for George to write, he's said before that he doesn't have to think too hard about the context of those stories, especially Fire & Blood since that is mostly annotations from previous works
George already said that he regrets not writing all of them at once. If he regrets that, then he is most certainly keeping both books in the tuck until the ending is finished
Really? So instead of publishing one book, relieving him of a lot of pressure and stress, reigniting joy and adulation in and from the fandom, he keeps the books to himself, after already publishing 5? I doubt it.
He means his pause, not the publishing. He stopped writing to focus on other projects and afterwards he couldn't continue on the same pace. Publishing a finished book isn't a problem if he just continues with the next, but he didn't do that.
I think… probably pretty controversially… that George plans on releasing winds and then dying with maybe a little bit of spring done and having that be the legacy. He won’t disappoint anyone with a bad ending, it will be the fault of whoever picks it up or just his final unfinished work before he tragically died. Either way he isn’t risking his legacy with fucking up the ending.
He's not good with endings if you read his other works. George RR Martin doesn't know when to tell himself no. Like with Feast and Dance he just kept adding new characters. I genuinely don't think he knows how to untagle it.
He might want to rewrite a lot for the final book though. I would imagine he'd want to get every ending and every major death or surprise exactly right and by the right viewpoing character, plus we know he has a hard time deciding from who's perspective he would write chapters when some of them meet (like with the Meereeneese knot) so the final two books will be difficult in that sense: a lot of rewriting, trial and error; which is what has kept him stuck with Winds all this time.
Yeah basically. Since he doesnt want others finishing his story but feels an ending must be there, I think he does have a short story in his will about how things get to a certain point and then end to at least make an end to it
Good video. But in my opinion, there is no way GRRM wraps up this story in 2 books. The pacing of the plot has drastically slowed down since ASOS and I doubt that changes in winds. Just look at the pacing for the winds sample chapters
He is not writing like a machine, you can’t predict 5% per year. George is stuck on something since 2015, once he figures it out it would be a year till the book is out, but it doesn’t look good. He probably sits down to think about it, then gets mad at everything and proceeds to take a break for a month. It’s also possible he just rewrote the book in 2016 and is stuck on this thing since 2018 but still, writing yourself into a corner is pain in the ass.
I think part of why Winds is taking so long is because he basically has to write Dream simultaneously. Or at least, get his plan all ironed out. Each decision he makes, he kind of has to follow it through logically to the end of the story. So his “gardening” is taking much longer, because every time he writes something new, he can’t ignore its implications, and probably has to go rewrite things to make it all work together. So, hopefully, Dream is much more fleshed out in his mind already by the time Winds is done, similar to how Clash of Kings was pretty quick to write, because it was just a bunch of fleshed out ideas that didn’t fit into AGOT.
The thing is that George works very slowly. Not because he doesn't know what to write but a mixture of work ethic and interest. He will never get to dream of spring since he will take a loooong hiatus after winds.
I have wondered for a while, considering how much everyone hated Season 8, if the pressure to write a better ending is so great, that he is just too afraid to actually release anything at this point. Like, even though we know he will get to the ending differently, maybe his ending is still similar to the show. Releasing this finale, and having everyone hate it, would probably be such a blow to him in his mind.
No. His issues regarding the writing process started much earlier, and George never sticks to his original plan. The show's issues also didn't start with season 8, but rather 5.
Greetings... I have worked with "Gardener" type writers in my past career. "Gardeners" have a tough time continuing a story line that they've walked away from, regardless of the reason. Add to this the note "Bram is King". Giving a "Gardener" a 'locked in' ending gives them fits. "Gardeners" by nature (pun intended) let the story grow along its own lines. They cannot easily guide it. With that being said I believe (based on my professional experience as an author and creative consultant) if George finishes WoW, ADoS will be the hardest book for him to finish. Unlike Jo Rowling, who is an "Architect" type, finishing his work while other jobs are swirling around is nearly impossible. George needs to step away from everything else to even have a chance to finish such an immense saga.
Didn’t he say like 5-6 years ago that he solved the Meereenese knot and that it would be smooth sailing? I used to follow this daily. I’ve come to the point where I just accepted that we’re not getting the books.
It's going to take more than 2 books to finish the story. I'm thinking 4. We MAY get 1 100% written by GRRM. After that the next will be around half george, then less than a third. The final will likely just be a raw outline of how the story ends from grrm. Maybe some quotes from George. The gaps will be from ghost writers.
The story has only ever expanded and George can't figure out how to untangle it. So much still has to happen, Danny isn't close to even getting close to westeros. I don't think he can finish the story in 2 books. Also George isn't the peak of fitness. We may get winds but I seriously doubt we get dream sadly
the most optimistic take on the lengthy time he’s taken for releasing winds is that he’s doing writings for both (which he’s not). Then he’s probably been battling another meeranes knot/5 year gap in winds. The only hope is that the way HotD has been treated will give him some tremendous motivation to finish his book. Edit. GRRM has talked about how he struggles to write beats he already knows than completely new territory.
One thing you’re not accounting for is the fact that George has referred to himself as a gardener, and so there may be more plots and characters popping up throughout the last two books which will impact his ability to resolve story lines. Perhaps that is one of his big struggles with Winds and why it’s taken so long, eg he is going back and forth with his editors and himself cutting out newly sprouted ideas from his garden as opposed to letting them grow and then having to manage them with all the rest.
This is basically cope, lol. George can't finish it in 2 books unless somehow The Winds of Winter wraps up the White Walker war. He’s always writing expansionist content, not writing in a way that leads to a conclusion.
GRRM the day he finishes Winds of Winter “whew, well now that that’s done, I’m going to take a nice long break from writing anything for a year at least”…. Flash forward 5 years later “I admit I haven’t got much writing done on Dream. I have about 1/4 of the book done, all of those chapters being leftovers from Winds of Winter 🤓”….. paaaaain
To make a big point about the unfinished books in ASOIAF, I think the final season as a whole is the prime example of something (outside of problematic writing, etc) falling under the weight of it's own complexities and ideas. Also probably why Martin is having issues with the final two books, because he's going to have squeeze everything left into those, but also make it clear what the story is truly about and saying
I say this to everyone. with the panel ultimate book out of the way, all that’s left is to tie up everything and close the story. Which should be pretty easy.
Let’s just hope that George RR Martin is alive to publish the seventh and final book and that this story is a lot better than the Game of Thrones Series Finale.
I always used to think that once the penultimate chapter was done he'd be able to write the final one much faster. But considering how long it's been, I'm just not sure anymore.
What I don’t like is George criticize the shows for not adapting everything to the exact degree, but if they had the whole story, then they wouldn’t have to cut out parts they don’t know aren’t important yet.
I honestly don't think he's been working on the book 5% per year. It's more likely that he's not been working on the book at all. Think about that massive project you were super excited when you started but at some point it became less interesting and too complicated to finish, so you put it aside indefinitely and it gets harder and harder to restart working on it. And in the meantime you even forgot what you did already for that work and are less used to actually do the daily grind needed to work on that project, which makes it even harder go back to work on it again. Add to this that the guy is old, rich and probably not hungry for more glory and fame now that there are TV shows made on hi work without said work even be completed. Kentaro Miura died without finishing berserk. I don't have great hopes for a song of ice and fire...
There won’t be a mori for song of Ice and fire either leaving the tv show as the finale which is upsetting. Though shouldn’t speak things into existence as people did with Miura.
I've been saying for a long time that I've made my peace with ASOIAF never being finished... but I'm rapidly moving toward true indifference. I've become more aware over the course of time of the subconscious racism and sexism in the story, and I no longer believe that the books would have an ending that's satisfying to me anyway. If GRRM had continued writing at his original pace and had finished the series in the aughts, I probably wouldn't have noticed the more subtle flaws. But since I have become aware of them, a certain disillusionment has set in. I mean, if the books come out, I'll read them, but it'll be out of intellectual curiosity alone. The series no long holds my heart.
I hope you're right, but unfortunately if asoiaf is considered as Goerge's project, then i know starting a project is always easier than finishing it. infarct, finishing is always the hardest part.
He has no idea how Daenerys is going to go from Dragonstone to King's Landing. These are the details he just fills in as he goes. He knows Daenerys is going to get there at some point and probably become the mad queen somehow because some bad things happened on the way there. I would almost bet you money that's exactly how his outline for her character arc reads.
Well done! Thanks for giving us hope. Btw I am convinced Dany is not dying and I can on and on about reasons why if you are interested. I have a lot of long Q&A’s on this topic on the Quora Space I run, A Theory of Ice & Fire. -Jeff H’ghar
My friend and I had a bet in 2014 where I said winds would drop in late 2014 and my friend said early 2015 so neither of us have that $20 nor will get it, if only we'd put that money in BTC escrow we'd be RICH if the book came out.
A Winds of Winter would have also be easy to write if GRRM did not try to put every idea that enter his head. It is not that he did not have ideas on how it would end- his desire to make it the goat grimdark fastasy novel outweight his desire to end it.
I just wish he could get whatever it is he needed to finish. Be it help from someone else, like someone to map out the story, help him cut/edit things that don’t need to be in the winds or dream, get real focused on moving the story ahead, someone to help him write, and he can go back and edit/change/rewrite to give it his flair, whatever. Thats the only way I see it getting finished (mainly dream. I think he can finish winds eventually on his own). Is he to stubborn to accept help? Is he overburdened by other projects? Well sorry but those other projects aren’t going to cement his legacy as an all time great. Only ASOIAF will. Screw the shows. I know he’s had a rough few years as well personally. I hope he can heal from that and find some hope and peace. I love the man and his work. It’s just a bummer that it’s not finished already. I get it, but at the same time it’s just like Jeeze, we may never get the books.

Nah no way he's just lying about it
There won’t be a mori for song of Ice and fire either leaving the tv show as the finale which is upsetting.
Oh for the love of god who cares about anything like that? It's a great series.
Mate, GET OVER IT!! It's not happening, not in this timeline, not now, not ever, you will never see these books. Good day sir.
we are all crazy coping by this point
Needs to finish chewing and swallowing for a few days and finish the books.
I hope you're right, but unfortunately if asoiaf is considered as Goerge's project, then i know starting a project is always easier than finishing it. infarct, finishing is always the hardest part.
Two steps ahead. He is always two steps ahead.
As he sits down in a race against time, without any signs of him standing up again.
I get it. I’m really taking my time reading ADWD. I’m 3/4 through and I almost don’t want to finish it because I don’t have the next book yet.
Just pick up a different book series. Who is Martin to have a monopoly over your attention?
@@MrBell-iq3sm- I’ll decide what I choose to read, thanks.
I say this out of the upmost respect, you should focus on other things in your life.
He’s already got so much of ADOS written than we realize
This would require the author to finish Winds of Winter, and he'll probably die before that, so, we're doomed.
He has no idea how Daenerys is going to go from Dragonstone to King's Landing. These are the details he just fills in as he goes. He knows Daenerys is going to get there at some point and probably become the mad queen somehow because some bad things happened on the way there. I would almost bet you money that's exactly how his outline for her character arc reads.
i love how Stephen Colbert pretended to give a shit about winds of winter
Im two steps ahead of you im waiting for materials after dream of spring
he will die (or at least his mind will go senile) before finishing Winds, then there will be like a million fanfic versions of Spring.
The TV show has already ruined the story, if George does not correct it by finishing the story. His life's work will be ruined
Sip on that hopeium, while I do believe winds of winter will release. I personally have given up on hope, this will ever release
bruh you are 2 steps ahead......., dream of spring will be a dream , i would like to think therewise but history has proven you cant be optimistic
The Winds Of Winter 2026
A Dream Of Spring 2035
Well done! Thanks for giving us hope. Btw I am convinced Dany is not dying and I can on and on about reasons why if you are interested. I have a lot of long Q&A’s on this topic on the Quora Space I run, A Theory of Ice & Fire.

"This'll be my last Winter" ahh video
I think the most difficult part of dream would be the epilogue to write
Coping in advance is crazy
he will never finish WoW even. lets be real.
It's super hard to tie up that many plotlines though. I speak from experience^^
