  • How to pull 5.9 Cummins without a lift and without pulling the cab off. I found the problem with the common rail after I pupped the engine and then pulled the head
    Is this truck restoration?

You have to make a video showing how you remove the crossmember. That would be awesome.

@@CVcustoms has been hot and dry here in the Northeast and the crops are getting ripe so it is a slow time of year for me to find anything really interesting. I'm hoping once the fields are harvested I'll be able to make a few interesting discoveries. My latest findings though are a couple of old Wheelhorse tractors, I love going through these and restoring them mechanically but letting them keep their old crappy patina look. I own 7 of these tractors and just got another one yesterday mainly for parts. So I work mechanically on a much smaller scale than you do, but I love the complexities of big equipment, especially diesels.

So here's my .02 cents I'd like to pass along from my RnR of a 2005 CR engine just so it could help anyone possible.
    1) I am fortunate enough to have a 2 post in my shop so I just lifted the cab all the way off. Yes, that means breaking apart power steering lines and brake system but it really wasn't that bad. Power steering lines were an extra 10-15 mins and brake system was 2 nuts to split the master cylinder from power booster (bolts are pressed in and all you have to do is loosen the nuts, ask me how I know LOL) so I didn't even have to break open brake lines/fluid. Steering shaft is disconnected also but one 13mm bolt is easy.
    2) I couldn't imagine working on a lot of the stuff with cab and front end the way. Another key note is: apparently the front cross member in front of the rad/intercooler stack is not friendly to remove and must be cut and re-welded at re-install. I cannot confirm this as I removed the whole front end attached to the cab to avoid this issue. Overall, it was SSOOO much better to have everything out in the open and more accessible because cab was removed. I watched as many videos as I could before I started mine and I was up in the air as far as doing it cab-on or cab-off. I would 110% recommend cab-OFF no doubt about it. I can understand a shop that needs quick turn around times and time savings is key but the cab-off is the only way to go if possible and you're not in a rush. Especially when it comes time to re-torque everything to proper torque specs. There are a lot of places torque wrenches don't fit and don't giver proper torque at weird angles.
    3) I actually used an 06 "junkyard" 5.9 engine not knowing if it was even going to work or not but I tied into it anyways Lol. Literally the only difference as far as the long block from 05 to 06 is the driver side motor mount and the "riser box" injector wiring harness which all you have to is replace the riser box with wiring ran thru in it and the actual valve cover. It's all plug-and-play the 05 riser box/valve cover parts will swap over to the 06 engine in no time flat. (Must replace riser box valve cover gaskets. They look "re-usable" but it def did not work for me. Spend $50-$100 and get a new gasket set for both. Very easy to do). Injectors are exactly the same 03-07 so no need to swap them either - simple 2 wire hook up at the injectors via two 8mm nuts per injector. I re-used the 05 wiring harness/ECM on the 06 engine long block. EVERY SINGLE SENSOR on the 06 engine is the same and every single thing on the 05 harness plugged right in to the 06 engine sensors. Not a single sensor was swapped over. Another side note: Do not try and use an 06+ ECM with 03-05 engines as the are very different. They are completely different software systems even tho they look very similar (You can find more about this online in the forums as far as technical stuff). You can not use the 06 wiring harness on the 05 truck as there are multiple pins that are different at the motor-to-cab connectors AND the motor-to-trans connector (Even tho they are both 48Re trans, Literally one or two pins off). The entire wiring harness must be switched over from an 06 motor ( I got mine from junkyard with harness still intact) to work in the 05 truck. If you are swapping motors from the same year-to-year truck, the wiring harness shouldn't be an issue and can be re-used.
Hopefully this helps anyone looking to do this as I could not find hardly any info online when I was searching to do this. Side note: 03-early04 engines can be used as well but pistons/injection tables are slightly different and may require special tuning to run properly. Also Ive seen 2007 5.9 junkyard CR engines out of old scrapped UPS/FedEx trucks that I'm very certain I'm sure would have worked as well, but I didnt want to take that chance with unknown miles haha

On my 2006 5.9L Cummins the 1 left motor mount bolt that is that holds the arm to the motor mount its way loose. I think Ill have to loosen the motor mount bolts, lift the engine a little and try to screw that 16mm bolt back in. Any other recomendations?

  • @wheyez1

My first thought was is he going to pressure wash everything before he starts the job? Now the question is will he be cleaning everything before he puts it back together? I hate doing the underside and getting dirt in my eyes. I’m thinking testing the blower system would be good before too. That way if the after cooler is leaking you could send it out for repair while everything is being assembled.
    1. What upgrades are you planning? 2. Are you going for a diagnostically designed build? 3. How much money did you plan on spending on the project?
