Do you own a boat? Do you remember your first time docking it? Docking was something that had me so nervous, especially because wind and current around here can get crazy. However, with a few tips from local boaters to take it slow, go when the conditions are flat, and ask for help from the dockhands, things turn out much better than expected.
Hope you enjoy this one! It feels like one we're going to look back at on in many years and relish in how far we've come as boaters.

Hi....you guys are doing great....BUT...as a commercial captain, I am going to give you some really good advice on docking. Since you aren't really doing much cruising yet, you should practice docking over and over again until you feel like you are in control. On a calm day like the one you had here, you should dock that boat 15 times in a row at the same dock. Maybe with an experienced captain. And you will see your confidence go right up and your skills as well. It is really important to get rid of the fear and build confidence. Love your boat...it's awesome!
Agree with the captain, practice at a dock in a empty part of the marina, many times in the same day. Coming in for water once a week will not really help build skills.

I was a sailing instructor in my teens, having learned how to sail in dinghies as a kid. You having a cruising instructor on board for a day at this point would give you confidence and perhaps help prevent you from having to unlearn some dangerous habits. The more you know the more you understand the dangers of doing anything on the water.

Sorry if this sounds weird, but I love that Dana is the one "driving" the boat... It really breaks the cliché of the men being the only ones good at driving and mechanical stuff, while the pretty girl sits in the back looking pretty... As a woman, I see this as very inspiring ! As a former sailor, of many years, I have to say I rarely steered my boats. I did consider myself the "captain" of my boat (and the engineering officer.) I was in the USN for for six years though. The captain doesn't steer. He "RUNS" the ship though.
The best part about watching your video's , that you guys look like kids discovering new abilities about your selves but mot importantly your discovering new strengths together for the first time together, which is so beautiful . I really want that type of relationship

You can use a vinegar solution cleaning spray to clean! It's all I use at home. 1 part vinegar (24%), 4 parts water, and a few drops of dish soap. Works wonders even on the most stubborn stains!
Highly recommend Dr. Bronner's soap. Biodegradable and eco friendly. You can dilute it for windows and mirrors etc. And shower with it.
And wash your hair with it!! I love that stuff I always get the lavender and haven't bought another soap ever since
I also bring it when I travel it comes in handle to wash dishes or flat wear (I always being a cutlery set when I travel to avoid using plastic) or just do a quick wash of your "unmentionables"
When my wife and I sailed together she always drove the yacht when docking and undocking and I ran around with warps and fenders. Worked a treat. Log books are essential so well done for getting them organised. I enjoy your videos so keep them coming.
Totally agree. The best thing you can do if you regularly sail in a partnership where one is a more developed sailor than the other is to bring the less developed partner on the the point where he or she can do the driving whilst the more experienced one does the strings and bumpers.

That was the right attitude, slow and easy, loop around if as skipper you don’t feel comfortable. Easy as she goes, beautiful job.....awesome. If I did not know you were a fist timer, would never have known. The most experienced sailors have difficulty docking in some circumstances. A fun thing to do, when nobody is around, practice doing it under sail. There will come a day when your motor fails and you will need to get to a dock. Good to know you can do it.....Once you get the hang of it, with just a small piece of sail or even under bare poles, you will love it.
When docking natural is your friend. You can still steer in neutral. You did a great job!
Bamboo & microfibres clothes are great for cleaning. I use the bamboo wet and then the microfibre to wipe dry. Especially good for dust ❤️

Just watched this with my four year old daughter, she was so fascinated, even though we are from sweden and she doesnt understand anything of what you say. But she said with a happy laud voice, "I love her, even though she has touseld hair!"

Nicely done with the docking! I feel that next time you could do everything bit more slowly. 35ft boat goes like a train so you can just float to where you want to go by giving it some gas now and then. Now when you use so much throttle you have less time to assess the situation =)

Hi guys, you’re doing a great job. Like others that have commented, if you take it slow and you do have a mishap it’s going to do a lot less damage and believe me there will be the odd whoops. Just one thing to note, when leaving the dock take it slow and try not to turn the bow away so sharply as it will swing your stern into the dock causing considerable damage. If possible push off and stay parallel until you are clear to swing away.
You guys are doing so well just take your time and keep practicing, all boaties learn something every time they use their boat. Enjoy

My wife and I agreed twenty years ago that when we go sailing there is a blanket forgiveness on anything that is said ten minutes before or after docking. These days that mostly means a great deal of shared, knowing smiles, and little being actually said apart from occasional stock phrases such as "oh well, and made it, man can fix it). It's worked very well for us and in truth no real disasters so far. And, most importantly, all limbs and digits still intact!
Didn't crash into the dock......is always a good thing. Cheer.

Natural acids such as vinegar and lemon juice with hot water were used years ago when windex or ammonia based products were not available.Also when mixed with baking soda, awesome from cleaning the sludge from sewage pipes. Thanks for your videos. Your energy is contagious.
That undock was completely Sports Car. Beautifully done. Loved it. Probably a bit Go,Go,Go and all at once, but .. lovely outcome. I am not a sailor, thumbs up, respect.

I fully switched from using paper towels and regular household cleaning products, to microfiber cloth rags and just water, even for my windows and stove top. No more streaks on glass at all, and no more nasty chemical smells.

You will never get the hang of it, sailing is ALWAYS learning, making mistakes getting better. Been sailing 50 year and am still learning lessons..

Dana just remember that when you dock the boat and leave the dock too, remember your speed, current, wind and tide. Its not a race. Many first time sailors forget when they move their boat, Your vessel has a stern. I thought you did well docking for your first time. Everyone makes a mistake. Have a good week.
The old saying goes... approach every point at the speed you want to hit it. You're doing great. When you are comfortable, or where you are comfortable, switch jobs; every job. There is a real benefit and peace of mind knowing either of you can do any job. Of course that will take time and practice but it is always time well spent. Fair winds.

Wonderful, you did really well! A total result. Your awareness is fantastic and slow is pro works.... just remember that when leaving and try and keep engine rpm below 2000rpm, particularly when cold, the engine will love you for it. Be aware od tide and winds for docking, they can be your friend and also your enemy. Great video.
Your doing great. Just take your time. Maybe a tip. Try work with little bits of giving gas. Just so much that you feel rudder and control. By giving full throttle you wil fast loose control. But you can practise that just near your mooring. So next time rent a spot in the marina for a day to practice docking in a narrow spot. Greetings from the netherlands Nico
I agree much less throttle when maneuvering near the docks, you literally need hardly any throttle and then it gives you loads more reaction time if things go pear shaped with wind etc. Great video though glad you having fun learning :)
Hey guys! Love the videos! But I do have some boating tips, I work on a boat and really the only cleaning supplies you need for inside and outside a boat is either Vinegar + Water solution, or a Alcohol + Water solution with a microfiber. It eases up on the harsh chemicals and it cleans just as good as any other chemical cleaner. Have fun on your adventure!
When you're docking (and pulling away) the spring lines are your best friends.

Very well done on your first docking! I know how stressful it can be. Slow is pro as you said. Pay attention to wind and current in advance. Have a plan and don't be afraid to bail if you don't get it right the first go round. Docking always seems to be a spectator event so it's a great life teacher in keeping your cool in the midst of chaos.

I remember the first time I took my Rv to get propane. I had to back into our spot all by myself and it was terrifying. But in the end I took it slow and did it great the first try! It was very fulfilling. Glad you shared!

Norwex microfibre cloths are AWESOME for cleaning mirrors. Just dampen with water - no Windex needed!

Always remember your boat is like a fork lift, it steers for the stern, so you cannot steer away from the dock like a car from the curb. Just go out in the bay and practice backing your boat as you would practice doing other boat stuff. Most boats back very well when using the rudder.
Good job. Nothing will be as scary as going through that bridge the 1st time. Never be afraid to ask for help, everyone has needed a hand at some point. Simple Green is a pretty decent natural cleaner also.

Best sailing course I ever took was called "Close Manouvering" and we did it on the Hamble estuary. We docked about 40 times stern too, bow too, along side and did it in different wind and tidal conditions. We learnt about prop walk and angle of attack etc. The best part of this course was it was someone else's boat :) Lots of practice will give you confidence. Top tip from that course was to do everything as slowly as you can while retaining control. You said it, slow is pro. You will come to love your LOG :)

Good job, suggestion, keep a boat hook in the cockpit, if a gust comes up you can always go to neutral and fend off from the helm.

Another excellent video. More unwanted are advice ..and yes another saying" Offer your Pinkie to the winch". That essentially means what it says : when you grab a line (rope) and wind it around the winch (or when doing anything rope and winch-wise), try and get into the habit of holding the line (rope) such that your pinkie is closest to the winch. I know it sounds counter intuitive but in the way of life, pinkies are easier to live without than thumbs!

Good video. Good to see your approach to learning and trying.
One suggestion would be to try swimming in your life jacket (disconnect the auto inflation first). I think you will find that you need it a lot tighter around your waist. At the moment your head will disappear into it when it inflates making breathing, looking, swimming very hard. Potentially dangerous for your neck too.
Really recommend a life jacket with crotch straps. Keeps jacket from going over your head. The PDFs really need to be snug.

I get the long hair everywhere! We bought a 45 ft sailboat and I had no experience...I just spent an evening practicing docking over and over again at an empty public dock. It is an extremely steep learning curve. Looks like you are nailing it. And so calmly, I have so much anxiety. Enjoyed the episode!

THERE ARE NO BATHROOMS on boats. You cleaned out "The Head'" or "The John " and if you cleaned where you ate, where did you clean Dana? You sure didn't clean out anyone's kitchen because that would be somewhere on land you cleaned out, sobsince it is your boat you cleaned out your galley !
